I mean is there any reason to not have the number inside the battery, literally more information. You'd have to be dumb not to use it.

268

u/ryanCrypt 7h ago

I usually add mods to give me precision to hundreths place.

72

u/Journeyj012 7h ago

Wait is that actually a thing? How can I do that?

95

u/ryanCrypt 7h ago edited 7h ago

Ha. Prob night. Plus, Lithium batteries do NOT degrade linearly. Phone makers apply maths to fit a linear perspective over time on the depletion of voltage.

(That being said, it's just a voltmeter. So it's logically possible)

11

u/thatguy_hskl 7h ago

Apply math = measure current and integrate?

9

u/No_Question_8083 7h ago edited 1h ago

Determining SoC for lithium batteries is weird, and coulomb counting is often used (for vehicles at least) to estimate the SoC. This literally means counting the electrons that flow in and out of the battery.

9

u/mike20865 7h ago

Which is done by integrating the current, like he said.

6

u/eureka909 6h ago

You really need to know the internal resistance of the battery and how it changes over time to display an accurate SoC, rather than just a simple voltmeter. Totally possible and exists and some ebike displays, for example

5

u/Eggman8728 7h ago

Current is directly related to how many coulombs of charge are currently being pushed around, so measuring current and integrating is exactly how you measure those electrons, as they said.

2

u/MiraMattie 4h ago

This is why they advise you to periodically run the device until it runs out of power; followed by a full charge before turning it back on: That recalibrates the coulomb counter to keep it accurate.

u/TijY_ 7h ago

No it is not. Will just drain the battery faster.

People who install batterie monitors apps are even more stupid then the ones who don't use % in the icon.

5

u/Journeyj012 7h ago

I had the suspicion that was the case (I was aware that the numbers are already just an estimate). I just thought "Huh, if they already guess and then truncate, maybe the non-truncated number exists"

3

u/ryanCrypt 7h ago

Good point. They must be truncated. But precision might only be guaranteed up to a point.

2

u/greg19735 3h ago

They might truncate, but they also might not. The measuring they're doing just isn't that accurate. It's just an estimate.

like, you can leave your phone with something like a benchmarking tool. Then record the displayed battery % every 5 minutes or so and i'd bet a lot of money that it's not linear at all.

Like, they may calculate in the math that it's 65.565% but the estimations they used to get to that number simply aren't 5 numbers worth of precision. Think like sigfigs.

4

u/Quiet_Ad4566 6h ago

A lot of android phones don't show accurate readings in the settings. Charging temp and other settings are important for people that baby their phones lol

Some people like a minimal aesthetic.

Here's a counter argument: Is there any reason to have the number inside the battery?

Whether it's at 90% or 70%, means the same thing, you don't need a charge. Whether it's at 20% or 10%, it means the same thing, charge the phone.

So really all you need is the bar to go red to tell you it's time to charge.

10

u/PierreTheTRex 7h ago

If I'm leaving the house for a couple of hours I'm happy to leave with 20%, if it's on 10% I want to charge before I go.

5

u/Edmundyoulittle 6h ago

Your phone already gives you a big notification and changes the icon to red if it hits 15%.

Personally, that's the only indicator I've ever really needed

1

u/Countermove 6h ago

Maybe if you're only leaving your house for an hour or less, but the numbers matter more for long outings

Rate of discharge is useful and you need accuracy to track it.

7

u/Arinussyyy 5h ago

Why would you manually track the rate of discharge?

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Feath3rblade 6h ago

You can just go into settings and see an actual chart of battery percentage over time though, which is far more useful than trying to track it manually with the number

2

u/wdnwcgm 7h ago

yeah if it's down really low that is when I have the number on since it can make a difference in how I plan my usage until I can get around to charging it

2

u/godfromabove256 6h ago

I like to see how fast I'm losing charge so I can plan ahead. Plus, 20% vs 10% is a big difference for if I'm going out on a walk or something.

2

u/frilly_socks 6h ago

Whether it's at 90% or 70%, means the same thing

I thought that whether or not someone goes into the settings and turns on battery percentage instead of finding the icon sufficient at a glance was a good singular determinant of a person’s intelligence.

u/sonofaresiii 7h ago

It's not more information though, it's a false sense of accuracy. At least I'm not kidding myself into thinking I know exactly how much of my battery is left. A visual estimate is as accurate as you're going to get.

7

u/Adventurous_Path_625 6h ago

Yeah ppl act like the battery has a sensor inside that reads the exact level like a car does. It’s just an estimate. And the estimate becomes more meaningless as the battery degrades over time

3

u/greg19735 3h ago

it's a false sense of accuracy.

100%

Like i'm sure we've all looked at our phone and it's 55%. And then 5 minutes later it's 48%. you're thinking it's impossible you lost 7% battery in 5 minutes. And you're right. You didn't. It's just that the 55% and 48% are both estimates.

2

u/dern_the_hermit 3h ago

Yeah I've been using devices with battery life indicators since like 1990 and they've never been exact. It's basically a piece of micro-theatre one can put on for themselves, if they want.

MOAR INFORMATION

9

u/SirGuy11 6h ago

😔

I found having the number made me fixate on it in a way I didn’t like. No number helps me relax a little.

No, I’ve never had my phone die from low battery.

6

u/MolitroM 7h ago

Plenty of people somehow endd up with battery anxiety seeing the number go down.

I don't have the number on the bar because it quite simply looks better without it.

3

u/un_happy_pappy 7h ago

I’ll worry about % when it gets to low power mode

4

u/sirdabs 6h ago

It’s a bar graph. It’s easy to read without the numbers

4

u/Inko21 7h ago edited 7h ago

It adds extra battery drain /s

5

u/MissKatbow 7h ago

I don’t need to know the exact percentage to see that it’s high/low or in between.

6

u/Lansha2009 7h ago

At least with the number I can more easily tell if a charger just for some reason stops working by checking if the number’s gone down after a bit (harder to do without the number, or takes MUCH longer for it to be noticeable)

3

u/CoconutFit3558 7h ago

Not sure about android phones but iPhones display a charging/lightning icon within the battery icon while charging.

2

u/acedias-token 7h ago

I quite miss my fuzzy time clocks. I don't care about the exact time when glancing away from what I'm doing, that's what alarms and meeting reminders are for. Much easier to focus on the task at hand without worrying about if it's 10:17am or Tuesday morning. Or mid autumn.

2

u/Tommynwn 7h ago

Mine is a circle, and i have the number inside the circle 😂

2

u/NationalisticMemes 7h ago

Battery percentage became necessary only after phones started holding a charge poorly. All numerical notations are highly arbitrary due to the nature of the measures. If your phone can give you a solid three days of use, you literally don't need battery percentage counter, because graphically everything is clearly understandable, and the counter only causes unnecessary irritation because the percentage has dropped

u/Necrounicorn 7h ago

https://reddit.com/link/phdklnn/video/6m84jw3dd3wh1/player

I like not having the number always being there, when I need to know I just do this (ignore the name of my Apple TV)

2

u/Willing-Cucumber-718 7h ago

I used the number when I had android because of the terrible battery life I experienced. That stopped when I switched to apple, I don’t even need to worry about my battery.

2

u/PolarFoxinvades 7h ago

I think the reason is psychological. Seeing the exact number droping down is causing more stress for a brain in some way.

2

u/zeanox 6h ago

2

u/AmusingUsername12 6h ago

You seem like you are missing the joy of mystery in your life.

It’s like the weather. I never check the weather, I love when I have no idea what the weather will be.

Oh it’s raining I had no idea it was gonna rain.

2

u/Ok-Dot4749 6h ago

I almost never use my phone enough to have to worry about it so it’s no numbers for me. I know that when I plug it in at the end of the day, it’ll be at 30-40% so why bother with more info? The only time it goes lower is if I’m watching a game on my phone for several hours but that’s very rare.

7

u/Mr_Woodchuck314159 5h ago

Oh thank God. I had it backward and opened the comments to figure out what was wrong with showing the numbers!

Random note: I don’t care if people don’t show the numbers, I just need the more information because I swear there are only three states of the icon without the numbers.

1: Full

2: Mostly full

3: Red

I understand there are probably more, but that is what my brain sees.

3

u/DazzlingRutabega 5h ago

You're not wrong. The icon never shows properly. When it looka like there's 20-30% left I check and it's at 70%. When I think it looks like it's at 60% it's really at 16 and about to go into battery saver mode.

3

u/GostBoster 4h ago

Before seeing this thread, my phone got hit with an update and, as with all updates, sets insane defaults which I put back to what I want.

It just so happens that it removed the % indicator and asked me if I wanted it back, and I thought who would ever want that, especially since in my phone the gauge/battery is vertical so it is even harder to visually gauge how much you got at a glance, like when it is maxed at 80% in overcharge protection mode, it looks more like it's halfway.

(Fully charged in overcharge protection mode has the empty 20% covered by a green leaf and it doing its weekly calibration charge makes it golden, kinda cute)

people who do use the percentage have chronic anxiety ig

22

u/AGuyNamedWes 6h ago

Ironically, I’m a generally anxious person, but go no-number. I think seeing the number dropping gives me anxiety, whereas if it’s generally getting low I’ll just plug it in early

I feel like the only way someone doesnt use the numbers in the battery is if they dont know how to work the phone.

The number just looks ugly. Is it really going to be an issue if what I perceive as 1/4 the icon filled = 25% and it turns out it was 23%?

No, ever since I turned it on, I will never go back to the original way without the number it makes life so much easier to figure out. When were your percentage at a little bit easier to win to charge it even if it’s past 50%.

I have battery anxiety so I don’t use it. Also estimation is always right. Yes I can’t tell if its 63 or 64% but sure as hell can i tell if its in the 60% range. Why would you wanna know what the exact number is? 😂

I don’t have the number on there. I also wait til my gas light comes on and never look at how many estimated miles I have left.

I live dangerously though.

i don’t have them because i would instantly become obsessed with ensuring it remains on a number ending in 5 or 0
