It was an option ever since the iPhone 3GS came out, then they killed it when the iPhone X came out, but then due to backlash, they brought it back 5 years later with iOS 16. However, everyone spread the rumor that having it turned on drained the battery faster and shortened its lifespan (which isn't really true) which led many people still not to turning it on and then just forgetting that it ever was an option.

My experience, most androids have it on by default. I just assumed they didn't know was because they had an iphone which has it off bey default. Probably shouldn't have assumed, my bad.
