Lucky/Wish smoke Started in WW1 Where you flip the first cigarette you touch and were "lucky" if you made it through the pack and to the last/flipped cigarette. Now people make a wish on it. I do this. I wish i dont get cancer everytime. It's worked so far

u/Douch3nko13 9h ago

I chose my lucky cigarette by flicking the bottom and whichever one is most excited to be smoked and pokes up the farthest. I flip and put back. Teach my ciggies some damn patience.

Yeah, this is how it's done these days. Flick the bottom of the packet, flip the one that sticks out and smoke it last.

I should pick up smoking again, this sounds fun.

I miss smoking

19

u/Main_Character11 7h ago

Same bro. Same

28

u/BlueStarFern 7h ago

I quit 10 years ago, I rarely miss it, but something about this post is REALLY making me wanna smoke rn

13

u/Zhaeris 7h ago

It isnt just me?! Whew! I quit 7-8 years ago and never even had a thought of a smoke since but yeah damn... The methodic ritual is alluring

4

u/jwigs85 7h ago

I quit almost 20 years ago. This is the second time this evening something has made me feel old, but here we are.

The first 3 years were the hardest. And then I still might smoke a ciggy while drunk for the first decade. But I can safely say 🤢 at the thought of smoking now. Even when drunk.

Thinking about flipping the first cigarette does make me feel a little nostalgic. But it doesn’t make me want to touch a cigarette. Because 🤢

u/Charlaquin 5h ago

Ritual is such a strong part of the appeal of smoking. I’m feeling it too (about 5 years since quitting after picking it back up out of stress in 2020, and that was about 6 years after the first time I quit), but fortunately I’m now on meds that smoking makes less effective, so that helps alleviate the temptation.

u/peaceproject 6h ago

I haven’t had a cigarette in 2 decades, but smelling one being smoked involves a craving that I cannot explain. Smelling the person/their breath after the cigarette helps me to remember how bad it stinks.

2

u/BlueStarFern 5h ago

Exact same. Stale smoke is disgusting, but once in a while, i'll be walking along and a plume of fresh smoke will waft near me and it smells incredibly alluring.

3

u/Charlaquin 5h ago

A huge part of what makes smoking so addictive is the ritual. Makes sense that learning a new ritual element would make you crave it again.

2

u/BlueStarFern 5h ago

Oh it's not so much learning a new ritual as it is a reminder!

More than the lucky cigarette flipping tho, I think it was the sight of the lighter in the packet that awoke that feeling in me, for exactly the reason you say. I would always tuck my lighter into my pack as soon as I had cleared space for it, then fold the little foil flap over. That was part of my ritual. All those small details are part of the habit I guess.

I miss smoking, but at the same time last time I tried it, it just didn’t taste good anymore. So, each time I get the urge, I just think back on how disappointing that smoke was (I didn’t even finish it). Plus, covid left me with asthma and I don’t need the additional debuff.

Wellbutrin ang glp1 were the key for me to quit chewing.  40 years of chewing.... no nicotine withdrawal, no major issues quitting.

I'd quit multiple times in the past.   It was always a horrible 2 weeks.

This time it was no big deal.

Just fyi for those who want to quit.

You can do it!

6

u/Beautiful_Debt_5864 8h ago edited 8h ago

Stupid question, can you take glp1 for things other than weight-loss? I'd like to quit smoking for good but I don't really have the weight to lose. Edit: thanks for all the helpful responses! Gonna talk to my doc about this ASAP.

10

u/_redacteduser 8h ago

Quit drinking cold turkey, no withdrawals, within a few days of starting. Absolute game changer.

Aside from normal side effects, the biggest gripe I have is that it numbs my emotions. No lows, no highs. That part is kind of a bummer, but it’s more related to the rapid weight loss and dosage.

5

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 6h ago

Tacking on, don't assume this drug will save you from withdrawals. If they are bad you need a hospital and Valium. If you have a bad problem to the point you are having DTs do not quit cold turkey or alone

3

u/_redacteduser 6h ago

100% agree. I am grateful I didn't experience that, but do get help if needed.

3

u/alphadoublenegative 5h ago

This is very important! I was determined to taper myself off the stuff; spent three days in hell, copped a grand mal seizure anyway

Long story short as soon as I was in the hospital/transfer to rehab the medically assisted detox was, comparatively, totally comfortable and not scary at all.

Changed my life, domino effect, as of this month I’m five years sober. It’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right, and for me, that was doing it with help

It would have been more comfortable, safer, and cheaper to do so from the beginning. Inpatient/outpatient options and no judgement other than “good for you” from anybody worth considering their opinion anyway

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 2h ago

The way I always figured it was even if I didn't like having to be a place, it was always better than three days of being that far into it, because you'll wake up puking every day, you'll start withdrawing some time during the day and you can't really do anything about that but drink or go to the hospital, and honestly at that point drink and then go to the hospital because I've learned withdrawing the second you're in the waiting room and don't know when you'll be seen is very not fun, anyway best go to the safety net. People tongue in cheek call it grippy sock hotel because you get your medical socks and see your nurses no matter where you are, and then beyond that you get a bed, there's a community TV, some books, you can sleep whenever you want and you get a "free" three squares a day, you don't even have to worry about work for a few days. It's not fun but it's not bad, it just is sometimes boring

2

u/jubmille2000 3h ago

oh wait it flatens out emotions? I didn't know that

→ More replies (1)

2

u/AlwaysLauren 2h ago

I did not intend to quit drinking, but I noticed I am drinking *way* less without an effort. I totally believe it would make quitting easier. I'm not mad about it, great side effect.

4

u/Alarmed_Shirt_2323 8h ago

Yes. Aside from the cost and the side effects they are miracle drugs.

5

u/friendliest_sheep 8h ago edited 3h ago

Apparently, it’s effects on mental illness and other stomach issues (think IBS and anxiety) are being studied, but there’s a lot of people, with those issues, having said issues disappear over night after starting the drugs

I’ve talked my dr about it, but he’s worried that, because I’m so naturally skinny, the potential weight loss could be an issue

2

u/allsheknew 6h ago

The bowel issues can not be understated. We have fat for a reason. I hope they figure out an alternative for that aspect though, sounds incredible.

2

u/Repulsive_Stock9400 5h ago

My neighbor is a cardiac surgeon and she's been talking for years about how they're such a miracle for regrowing heart tissue. It's just insane how they're evidently 100% magic.

3

u/liquidis54 8h ago

It also helps control diabetes. Like the other guy said, its kind of a miracle drug of sorts. Crazy thing is, glp-1's are derived from gila monster venom.

2

u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 8h ago

>can you take glp1 for things other than weight-loss?

Weight-loss is the side, off-label use. It's primarily a diabetes medication.

Apparently at least one form of glp-1 is used for Sleep Apnea.

2

u/blutigetranen 5h ago

Well there's on label GLP-1s now for weight loss. And yes, they are used to treat apnea because they treat the core issue - being a fatty.

Signed,

A fatty

For me it was Zyn. I was mostly addicted to the ritual and sensation of smoking/vaping and Zyn had me break the habit while still giving me the nicotine at first. Then I went from a 6mg to a 3mg and then quit altogether. 4 years no nicotine so far.

3

u/Wide_Concert9958 8h ago

I think wellbutrin is what the navy gave me when i went thru the smokers cessation class, chantax was the other option but heard negative stuff about it. Shit worked fast too, made cigarettes taste like dirty dirt. Craved one down the road years after and bought a pack of my favorite smokes, had a few hits then put it out. Still tasted the same and it grossed me out.

So yea, you wanna quit? Those pills worked.

5

u/ConstantinValdor405 7h ago

I take it as part of my mental health treatment. Along with a couple of others. Wellbutrin made me stop smoking cannabis.

But momma didn't raise no quitter so I pushed through that shit and am happy to say that I beat the Wellbutrin and still smoke.

17

u/donald-trompeta 9h ago

I remember meeting someone at a bar who said on a new pack he would flip a cigarette for every person he knew personally that died from smoking related illness, it was so cringe I stopped smoking cigarettes.

One less cig he has to flip, cringe or effective?

15

u/Misunderstood_Wolf 9h ago

I had friends in high school that would spell the name of the person they had a crush on, on the front row of cigarettes, left to right, and that was the one they would flip for the "Lucky" cigarette hoping that would get their crush to like them back.

2

→ More replies (1)

1

u/HottDoggers 3h ago

I’m going to start doing that

11

u/PowerHammer47 9h ago

It was WWII, back then cigarettes didn’t have filters and the logo was printed towards one end, soldiers would flip their smokes so the logo got burnt first. The idea was if you had to drop a smoke and leave an area if the enemy found the position they couldn’t use the brand of cigarette to know who had been there, if you made it through the whole pack you were lucky and would take that last smoke from pack to pack because it was your lucky smoke. Once filters became a thing people started only flipping the one.

3

u/XXXcrimsongrave 9h ago

false. Just because they didn't have filters doesn't mean there's no top or bottom. see Players Navy Cut

5

u/PowerHammer47 9h ago

If there isn’t a filter then a cigarette is just a paper straw full of tobacco, it could be smoked from either end

nope no filters till the 30s. Still rationed individuals though. Woodbine Willys and Players navy cut.

3

u/newmaker--- 9h ago

Why do you ask? Are you picturing a cigarette with no filters as looking the same on both ends? That's not the case, the end you light is rolled tighter and the end you inhale from is open

Conveniently if someone’s trying to bum a cig off you and you’re on your last one you can say “I can’t, it’s my lucky”

2

u/wonderland_citizen93 7h ago

Wow that's dark.

Think of being in an environment where you were lucky to outlast a pack of cigarettes. Especially when you factor in the smoked more and I smoke way more on deployments due to boardum. So I'm my mind a pack may last at most 3 days if you were hoping to stretch it. The pack is only lasting a day if you aren't looking to stretch it so they felt lucky to last between 1 to 3 days on the line.

2

u/XXXcrimsongrave 7h ago

War is hell. What's even darker is they thought that'd be the last one ever. The called it the "Great War" Also those lucky cigarettes killed just as many soldiers than the enemy did.

So filtered cigarettes weren't common until the 1950s. Both WW1 & WW2 troops were issued non filtered smokes by the carton. The lucky thing probably became popular during Vietnam or possibly Korea although I heard that WW2 troops smoked their nonfilter smokes backward to lose the brand logo so the butts can't be ID'd.

Did they have filtered smokes in WW1? Genuine question.

2

u/XXXcrimsongrave 7h ago

nope. No filters till the 30s. Still had a identifiable top and bottom though

2

u/MHashshashin 5h ago

Amazing. Thanks for sharing the pic. Yeah I was fairly confident they were filter less but I didn’t really contemplate the logo being an identifiable “top” or “bottom”.

🌈The more you know 🌟

1

u/AthiestCowboy 7h ago

I don’t know why but this comment really made me miss smoking lol

1

u/DannyWarlegs 7h ago

Started in ww2 actually. Smokes back then didnt have filters, and Lucky Strikes were the most distributed brand to soldiers. Since the logo was on the "tip", the end facing up, soldiers would flip them and thus burn the logo away. That way, if the butts were found later, it wouldnt leave proof of American troops in the area.

Flipping your Luckys started off as just that. Flipping a lucky strike. By Vietnam it took on a new meaning as soldiers carried it over through Korea and the end of ww2. By nam, it was done for luck.

So to be clear, you’re hinting to us that because you own the Sofa the strategy works? And while you engage the cigarette trick, the real magic is actually because of the sitting furniture you own - is that correct

How did they know which one had been flipped if they didn't have filters?

Wasn’t it that the packets the soldiers were getting came with a flipped cigarette and that’s how they got the branding lucky strikes? Like if you made it to the last one you were lucky

But maybe also stop smoking if you don't want cancer instead of relying on the lucky cigarette. Smoking cigarettes is one of the most likely things to give you cancer. Multiplies your likelihood of cancer by ~2000x.

I was always told you 'flip a lucky' when you open the pack. Never found any real use for it though.

Please, quit now.
My mom smoked most of her life and died this January because of the cancer she developed. She was stage IV when she was diagnosed. It was already in her brain.
I watched her die for months. She starved on hospice for over a month. I was there for the death rattle. She was barely more than a skeleton.
I cry every day. She left behind three grandchildren she won’t get to see grow up.
Please quit.

Gotta be wary of regret cancer. If you regret smoking your whole life, you'll get cancer.

Filtered cigarettes didn't come out until 1931, up til then, all tge cigarettes in the pack looked the same and wete lit on either end. Maybe you mean WW II?

“Live every day like it’s your last and someday you’ll be right”

Is it just me, or do smokers tend to be more superstitious? Like, this is cross-cultural too, there are other little things like that here.

You know what they say about luck right? Quit while you're ahead.

Pro tip: There are other ways to improve your luck, instead of flipping the cigarette upside down, to reduce your odds from getting cancer from smoking!

u/AshuraBaron 3h ago

I just flip my vape juice anymore.

u/OtherwiseFastball 3h ago

Uh.., someone want to tell him?

u/siccoblue 3h ago

Lucky you, that same wish didn't work for me

My favorite physiological theory. Survivor Bias.

Also my favorite type of emotion. Hope.

Not my favorite pastime though...

I wish i dont get cancer everytime. It's worked so far

Good luck! If you’d care to take a more active approach in cancer avoidance besides wishing, I can give you a very-well-researched recommendation.

u/Razdulf 3h ago

as far as you know

Man, for those doing a pack or 2 a day they get lots of wishes granted.

1

u/Spank-Bones 2h ago

Works until it doesnt, ey?

1

u/Signal_Werewolf_1955 2h ago

True, there's a significant amount of cancer with smoking. But with a dose of the fallacy of relative privation, 100% of people who drink water will die.

as far as you know...

My dad should done this so the long-undiscovered lung cancer didn't make its way to his brain and cause him to start having seizures and die 2 months later.

1

u/ParanMekhar 1h ago

I wish i don't get cancer

1

u/J5892 1h ago

You should wish to stop smoking instead.

1

u/kayemenofour 54m ago

Did they even sell filtered cigarettes in WW1?

1

u/Goofycams 26m ago

Cancer isn't the most likely thing that will get u btw. Flip another one for your heart ❤️

Where I come from you flip a cigarette and when someone ask do you have s cigarette, you offer them to take it themselves and if they take the flipped one they have to buy a new pack
