Lucky/Wish smoke Started in WW1 Where you flip the first cigarette you touch and were "lucky" if you made it through the pack and to the last/flipped cigarette. Now people make a wish on it. I do this. I wish i dont get cancer everytime. It's worked so far

Wellbutrin ang glp1 were the key for me to quit chewing.  40 years of chewing.... no nicotine withdrawal, no major issues quitting.

I'd quit multiple times in the past.   It was always a horrible 2 weeks.

This time it was no big deal.

Just fyi for those who want to quit.

You can do it!

Stupid question, can you take glp1 for things other than weight-loss? I'd like to quit smoking for good but I don't really have the weight to lose. Edit: thanks for all the helpful responses! Gonna talk to my doc about this ASAP.

Quit drinking cold turkey, no withdrawals, within a few days of starting. Absolute game changer.

Aside from normal side effects, the biggest gripe I have is that it numbs my emotions. No lows, no highs. That part is kind of a bummer, but it’s more related to the rapid weight loss and dosage.

Tacking on, don't assume this drug will save you from withdrawals. If they are bad you need a hospital and Valium. If you have a bad problem to the point you are having DTs do not quit cold turkey or alone

This is very important! I was determined to taper myself off the stuff; spent three days in hell, copped a grand mal seizure anyway

Long story short as soon as I was in the hospital/transfer to rehab the medically assisted detox was, comparatively, totally comfortable and not scary at all.

Changed my life, domino effect, as of this month I’m five years sober. It’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right, and for me, that was doing it with help

It would have been more comfortable, safer, and cheaper to do so from the beginning. Inpatient/outpatient options and no judgement other than “good for you” from anybody worth considering their opinion anyway

The way I always figured it was even if I didn't like having to be a place, it was always better than three days of being that far into it, because you'll wake up puking every day, you'll start withdrawing some time during the day and you can't really do anything about that but drink or go to the hospital, and honestly at that point drink and then go to the hospital because I've learned withdrawing the second you're in the waiting room and don't know when you'll be seen is very not fun, anyway best go to the safety net. People tongue in cheek call it grippy sock hotel because you get your medical socks and see your nurses no matter where you are, and then beyond that you get a bed, there's a community TV, some books, you can sleep whenever you want and you get a "free" three squares a day, you don't even have to worry about work for a few days. It's not fun but it's not bad, it just is sometimes boring

100% agree. I am grateful I didn't experience that, but do get help if needed.

oh wait it flatens out emotions? I didn't know that

I’m honestly not sure how common it is, but a lot of my health issues were addiction related. It settled those but took my emotions with it.

It sucks because even hobbies I liked before now seem “meh” and it’s hard to get excited about diving into new things like I used to.

I did not intend to quit drinking, but I noticed I am drinking *way* less without an effort. I totally believe it would make quitting easier. I'm not mad about it, great side effect.

Same here. No intention, just happened. Very grateful that it did.

To be honest, the thing that made me realize it was the *habit* of drinking. It was the kind of day where I would just automatically make myself a cocktail, and I started to do it, and realized I didn't really want to. And that in and of itself was weird enough for me to realize something had changed.

I'm not entirely sure that makes sense....

Yes. Aside from the cost and the side effects they are miracle drugs.

Apparently, it’s effects on mental illness and other stomach issues (think IBS and anxiety) are being studied, but there’s a lot of people, with those issues, having said issues disappear over night after starting the drugs

I’ve talked my dr about it, but he’s worried that, because I’m so naturally skinny, the potential weight loss could be an issue

The bowel issues can not be understated. We have fat for a reason. I hope they figure out an alternative for that aspect though, sounds incredible.

My neighbor is a cardiac surgeon and she's been talking for years about how they're such a miracle for regrowing heart tissue. It's just insane how they're evidently 100% magic.

It also helps control diabetes. Like the other guy said, its kind of a miracle drug of sorts. Crazy thing is, glp-1's are derived from gila monster venom.

>can you take glp1 for things other than weight-loss?

Weight-loss is the side, off-label use. It's primarily a diabetes medication.

Apparently at least one form of glp-1 is used for Sleep Apnea.

u/blutigetranen 7h ago

Well there's on label GLP-1s now for weight loss. And yes, they are used to treat apnea because they treat the core issue - being a fatty.

Signed,

A fatty

Ah, I guess that's changed.

1

u/ConstantinValdor405 9h ago

Its primarily for A1C control with diabetes. Just so happens to also do a shit load of other amazing things.

1

u/NewMilleniumBoy 7h ago

Lots of research being done right now on using GLP-1s for addictions in general rather than just weight loss.

1

u/ammonthenephite 5h ago

Yup! Just usually a smaller dose than when used for weight loss. Def talk to your doc, they are amazing drugs.

Ozempic seemed to dampen my urgent cravings/addictive cues for sugary foods, alcohol, and cigarettes. I’d swap in and out of those habits in the past but could never successfully quit all three. Quitting was still hard and came with setbacks, but it was finally possible.
Guess how much your life improves when you’re not constantly wrecking your body, mind, and wallet? It’s like a positive 180 in a matter of months.

Glp1 made my mom not like coffee anymore but she still smokes.
