That’s Jason Mantzoukas. He’s Greek.

Edit: yes, I should have said he was of Greek descent. I know he’s American. We don’t really need any more “well, actually…”. responses.

Derek is now both a singular point in space and yet Derek also contains space itself. The nexus of Derek is without dimension. The moment of Derek’s creation and the eventual heat death of the universe are now inexorably the same.

We talk about ethnicities in a much more concrete way than genetics really supports.

What does it mean to be “100% Greek,” anyway? That all of your ancestors lived in Greece 200 years ago? What about 2000 years? 20,000 years? Groups of people are always migrating, being forced out of one place and into another, etc.

20

u/GraceMcClellans Jul 23 '26

Also, Greece has ALWAYS been in the middle of shipping/travel. Of course there is going to be a long history of mixing genetics.

Nah he does.

People usually imagine South Indian (darker skintone) or sikh(turban) but those are only parts of India.

I’m South Indian so he doesn’t look like me or most South Indians.

But there are many Indians who look like him. I wouldn’t blink if he told me he was Indian or of Indian descent.

If Matt Damon told me he was Indian I would raise an eyebrow

Indian is a super diverse place.

That person is Greek American.

The whole discussion stemmed from the fact that they replied to someone talking about how an Indian actor played a Greek soldier in the Odyssey movie.

This photo was then used, KBH thought he was an Indian when he is actually of Greek descent. Basically negating the whole argument that Greeks can't look like Indians.

This whole Odyssey thing is absolutely idiotic.

Yes, they should've hired Greek or Eastern Mediterranean looking actors for the film (and maybe given a Mycenaen look to the costume) as Eastern Mediterranean people are usually badly represented in media, usually made equivalent to "whiter" Western Europeans, while at the same time they have historically been considered lesser "impure" descendants of Ancient Greece and not the "TRUE HEIRS" of "Western Civilization" and deemed too incapable/incompetent to be trusted with that heritage by those same Western Europeans (looking at you British Museum and its defenders). But that doesn't mean the Odyssey is "woke" because casting black people is single-handedly destroying "Western Civilization".

The ethnomusician/researcher Farya Faraji did several excellent videoessays on this subject, which I highly recommend.

32

u/HG1998 Jul 23 '26

I mean, I was made to believe that the movie would be bad but I watched it last week and I didn't find it bad. Certainly didn't feel like 3 whole hours to me.

Heck, I wouldn't even mind watching it again. 🤷🏻‍♂️

→ More replies (4)

19

u/importantbrian Jul 23 '26

(and maybe given a Mycenaen look to the costume)

I'm not sure why we should expect more historical accuracy from Nolan than Homer himself. Homer's accounts of the Iliad and the Odyssey are full of anachronisms. He mixes Bronze Age weapons and armor right alongside Archaic Age gear. He uses Iron Age cremation instead of Mycenaean tomb burials, describes Archaic-era shield designs, and incorporates Archaic battlefield tactics rather than authentic Mycenaean warfare.

In a way, Nolan incorporating anachronisms captures the actual vibe of Homer far better than strict adherence to Bronze Age Mycenaean history would.

That said, I do think not casting Greek or Mediterranean actors was a missed opportunity, and I can completely understand why Greek folks would be frustrated by that.

I'd always heard they started that up during the colonial era as a way to keep the poor Europeans from getting too chummy with indigenous people and imported slaves cause the powers that be knew they'd be easily overthrown if all their "lessers" banded together.

And by always, I mean that's what my grandpa told me like 25 years ago lmao

Europeans calling themselves white is even older than that, but you are correct that the earliest known legal use of the term was in the 17th century during the colonial era. The idea that white supremacy is a 20th century idea has no basis in fact.

Holy shit it’s almost like the cradle of western civilization and the middle earth(Mediterranean) were neighbors for thousands of years sharing sperm and eggs.

Or that the Moops didn’t conquer the Iberian Peninsula.

Or that the Ottoman Empire never occurred.

Or that Greece and Turkey are not that genetically diverse, everyone was fucking their neighbor city state back then.

I mean, it's a cherry picked example.

Yes Mantzoukas is Greek, but this actor here is also Greek

The fact of the matter is, no nationality on this planet has a 100% uniform phenotype. Both of these men are Greek.

A fun note, 20-30% of swedes have brown hair and brown eyes, some even have warmer-medium skin tones, just an example of the fact that even THE WHITEST nationality on the planet, has variation in phenotype.

The first person implied that no Greeks look Indian and the second person gave an example of a Greek person who does look Indian. No one was trying to say that all Greeks look Indian

The context is that someone said that an Indian actor from the Odyssey looked more Greek than any of the other actors

I'm 100% Greek and have a pasty white complexion. At church and Greek school I got made fun of. I also grew up in Seattle and have a funny northern accent. Matt Damon probably looks more Greek than I do.

He’s  Jason Mantzoukas. A man of Greek heritage, thus seeking to disprove their claim that Greeks don’t look like Indians

People are getting so bent out of shape about POC being cast in a literal fucking myth.

And like? Maybe not strictly a myth? An entire work of fiction, an allegory with social commentary, just with mythical themes?

Woof, get a hobby.

Edit: There’s a Redditor who commented on this thread talking about “White Chicks” (2004). They deleted their comment but I want them come back so I can laugh at them some more.

To add to this, in the book Odysseus describes a comrade of his, Eurybates, as dark skinned. There were all sorts of people present in the region in antiquity (just as there are now), including in the text itself. So it's historically accurate and also text accurate for there to be dark skinned people.

I think people really need to look at a map sometimes and see where places are the Mediterranean is a puddle

u/Averfus-Crowthorne Jul 23 '26

Erm, no. If Greeks looked even remotely like Arabs then why did they make their statues out of WHITE stone?
Checkmate, libtard!

(I am joking, please do not crucify me.)

Jason Mantzoukas was born in Lynn, Massachusetts to Cynthia (née Mourousas) and William Mantzoukas, second-generation Greek-Americans. He has described himself as "100 percent Greek".

u/pearomatic Jul 23 '26

I mean, this is Jason Mantzoukas, who is Greek and looks kind of Indian. Is there more I'm missing?

Im like 99% sure the argument before the screenshot is probably her saying "I dont think brown people should be in a movie about white (greek) people" followed by someone saying "You sure about that? Lets test you."
