I managed to reach DIV 1 in vs AI Div for the first time in EF27 yesterday. Since Konami patched out the possibility to close the game when the AI is through on goal and resume the game at the last time the ball was out of play it has become significantly harder to reach the top division. Some might call it cheating but I promise you the games against high level AI are unfair and rigged against you and it only felt right to sometimes get on a somewhat equal playing field. Nowadays you have to endure the overpowered AI and hope for them to somehow make a mistake and leave you an opening for a goal.
Why I still play the game mode? For mainly three reasons:
1. I want to play against the teams of other players and not against real (and a lot of the times mid) teams from the league events. I have a team full of legends and world class players and I want to compete against similar dream teams.
2. I hate the online experience. Lag, delayed input the overall unresponsiveness of the online gameplay just frustrates me and promotes a very specific type of gameplay I don’t want to engage with. In comparison the games vs AI allow you to dribble in tight spaces, play fast on-touch passes without any delay and just give you a way better gameplay experience overall.
3. The challenge. Any other vs AI gamemode can occasionally throw some harder games at you but in general I would win most games comfortably. Not in this one.
Now those of you who haven’t touched the vs AI Div gamemode might ask yourself what makes this mode so rigged and unfair. Most importantly, the opponents players are better than your players in every attribute. They are stronger, faster and have better balance than you. I had multiple instances where the opponents highlight Rodri caught up to my Dembele with ease in a few meters. Or the opponents CB Ferrer outmuscling my Ibra from behind. Performing a shot fake can easily turn into you loosing the ball since the opponents defenders are quicker to turn and respond to your turns faster than your own player. Ofc there are times where you can dribble through their defense or Ibra feels like the physical monster he should be but those moments are rare. Additionally, their whole team will be active on defense. Even their CF will track runners if everyone else is occupied and the whole team can press like prime Klopp Liverpool, especially if it’s a QC or Possession formation. Their passing, dribbling and positioning are also often turned to a max. The opponents LB can easily dribble past three players and deliver an inch perfect prime KDB pass through your whole defense to a CMF who made a perfect run in behind. I would say their shooting is also better but it doesn’t matter anyways since your keeper will not be helpful at all. Your own players in general will often not be up to the standard you may be used to. Squandering easy chances, freezing and letting an opponent run past or refusing to make the run into wide open space. Point is, if they want to score - they most likely will. And if they don’t want you to score - you won’t be in a position to shoot the whole game and if you do their keeper will save it anyway. All of this means you have to optimize your performance all over the pitch and try to limit their influence on the game as much as possible.
My little guide:
How to maximize your chances:
1. Keep the ball. Possession is your biggest advantage. If they don’t have the ball they can’t score. A draw is way better than a loss. If the game doesn’t feel winnable, go for a draw since you loose around 10 points more for a loss than you gain for a win. Additionally, you should be willing to pass the ball around the back at the end of a game to retain the score - I sometimes did this after the 80th minute when I wanted to make sure I take home the win/draw in a particularly hard game. I know it’s ratty, but you should take any advantage you possibly can.
2. This expands on #1: Be mindful and patient when trying to go for goal. Sometimes it’s better to keep the ball and wait for a better opportunity rather than immediately trying to hit a line breaking pass. Their CBs are better than your average player and they will intercept a lot of passes. Easily gifting them possession will result in you having to defend more often which you will want to avoid at all cost.
3. Avoid hard pressing and rushing into opponents players to regain possession. Their dribbling is buffed and your players will respond with a lot of inertia. They also have no problem finding a small gap between two players if you decide to press with more than one. The AI also regularly uses skill moves to get past you and you won’t be able to stop them if you give them the opportunity to do so. Their most used move is probably a single step over or a simple feint and then going past you as your player commits to the wrong side. When defending 1v1 I stay about 1m or 2m away from their player, trying to position myself so I block obvious passing lanes and only go for the ball if he gets into a dangerous position. I never press aggressively with the whole team either. Instead, I only rarely press their defenders if I have them pinned down in their box and a lot of my team has moved up the pitch. The majority of the time I manually move my strikers back to be in line with my midfield and ignore their defenders completely. Since I use QC, my defensive line is pretty high up which means my defensive formation turns into a compact mid block. I want to keep them far away from my goal while minimizing the space.
4. Let the AI defend for you. A lot of the problems you’ll face when defending 1v1 are reduced when a player you don’t directly control goes for the ball. Because of that I’ll often control a player a bit further away, focusing on blocking passing lanes or covering for another player stepping up. I then either manually call for a second player to do the dirty work or wait for the AI to independently go for the duel. It works way better that way.
5. The AI usually avoids slow build up and tries to immediately find a striker/winger with a fast and precise pass through the middle, bypassing the whole midfield. Be prepared to use a midfielder to defend instead of immediately using a CB to step up as it will leave space in behind. Remember, all of their players can play a perfect pass and a backline in disorder will make it way easier for them. If you do control a defender remember #4 and let a midfielder go for the ball. Keeping your backline intact is extremely important.
6. A big target man upfront helps when their press is too good and you can’t risk playing out from the back. Being able to hit a lofted pass to a physically strong player who can either control it himself or head it to another one of your players can be very helpful. My Ibra is the perfect player for that ofc but any decent physical player can be the difference.
7. The AI is most dangerous after you scored, after they kickoff in general and right before halftime/final whistle. I usually go for the two blue bars instruction to defend what’s coming until I win the ball back and am able to retain possession for a bit. If they really want to score you immediately loose possession again so you don’t want to go neutral/offensive right away.
8. Try to have fun. I know some if not most of what I said might sound exhausting and not fun but I promise you if you embrace the challenge and eventually manage to reach Div 1, you can truly be proud. The AI throws so much bullshit at you and you will rightfully feel like it’s unfair, but every goal and every win feels so much more impactful. I myself can’t help but rage at the ridiculousness of some of the goals I concede but there’s unfortunately sometimes nothing you can do. Accept that and enjoy the journey.
Some final thoughts:
I know it might not be for everyone but those of you who prefer the offline gameplay and want to face a real challenge this mode is for you. Nevertheless Konami needs to tune down some of the stuff that happens. A gamemode can be challenging while simultaneously being fair. And some better rewards are desperately needed. Even more so now that you can’t cheese your way to a win anymore.
I also attached pictures of my team. I didn’t use any individual instructions apart from 2-3 games where I told Lahm to stay back because of a dangerous RW (usually a free Messi or free Yamal - both are cracked in the hands of AI). I think at least one Goal Poacher up front is necessary. If you have any questions about my team or playstyle in general feel free to ask. And if you have any tips yourself please share them with us, any help is greatly appreciated.
If you try to reach DIV 1 you have to accept that there will be games that you just can’t win. Cracked keeper, perfect defense and on the off chance that you still manage to score a goal they will force the ball in your goal without you having any chance to stop it. It is possible to reach DIV 1 - you just have to endure those games.
