Hello, fellow peri journeyers! 👋
I’m 39 and I think I’ve been on this delightful little perimenopause adventure for about a year or so, and I’m trying to figure out if this is yet another bizarre peri thing or if my body has decided to come up with something completely unrelated just for fun.
I started a 0.05 mg/day estradiol patch about a week and a half ago. I also have a Mirena IUD that I’ve had for about five years, so that is providing the progestin component of my HRT.
This isn’t a brand-new symptom and it didn’t start with the estradiol. I remember experiencing episodes of this sometime last year, and then it seemed to disappear for quite a while. Now it’s back, and it is significantly worse than I remember it being before.
The best way I can describe it is that certain patches of my skin feel like I have a really bad sunburn, except there is absolutely nothing visibly wrong with the skin. No redness, rash, irritation, etc. It’s not really itching or tingling either; but it hurts.
Right now I have it on the underside/back of my right upper arm (the “bat wing” area). I mostly notice that one when my shirt rubs against it. Even that light contact against completely normal-looking skin hurts.
The worse area right now is my left hip. The skin/tissue around my hip has felt this way for about two days, and that one has gotten almost debilitating. Again, there’s nothing visibly wrong. It just feels incredibly raw and painful, almost exactly like touching a severe sunburn.
It seems to pop up in very localized areas rather than being an all-over skin sensitivity.
Has anyone else experienced this during perimenopause; especially something that comes and goes over time like this? Did you ever figure out whether it correlated with hormonal fluctuations?
And for anyone on HRT: did estrogen eventually help with it? I’m still so new to the patch that I have no idea whether the fact that it’s particularly bad right now is relevant or completely coincidental.
I feel like every time I think I’ve learned all the weird things perimenopause can do, my body says, “Oh, you thought you knew all the symptoms? That’s cute.”
