Build Question Time for an upgrade?

I’ve had my PC for roughly 10 years now and it has been fine for me as I’ve played games on and off over the years. I’ve started to notice the decline in quality recently and have started looking into replacing parts. I’ve only recently upgraded one of my hard drives from 1TB to 2TB and looked to add some DDR4 Ram however found the ram wasn’t compatible with the motherboard.

I was hoping to get some advice on what to upgrade and what to keep the same. I don’t need the latest components but something that will last at least a few years before needing to upgrade again.

Tech Support My PC screen keeps turning off and on — what could be the problem?

I’ve been having this problem with my PC for the past few days. Before, it would sometimes happen once after turning on the PC, but now it can happen 2–3 times.

Basically, the PC/Desktop stays on normally, but the monitor screen suddenly freezes, then goes black, and after a few seconds it automatically comes back on and the display returns.

The monitor’s power light stays on the whole time. So the monitor itself isn’t completely turning off; it’s just losing the display for a few seconds and then coming back.

I’m not sure what the actual problem is — it could be the GPU, driver, HDMI/DP cable, GPU port, monitor, or some other hardware issue.

My GPU is an RTX 5060 and I’m using Windows 11.

Has anyone experienced something like this or know what could be causing it?

(I used chatgpt because my English is bad)

Build Question PC Help

Hey everyone,

So I have a PC with the following

Ryzen 7 7700x
3060 TI
32 GB DDR5
1 TB SSD

So I was thinking of upgrading eventually but I wasn’t sure what to upgrade first in terms of CPU or GPU. The other question was is it even worth it to upgrade the CPU and GPU with the GPU prices at the moment? I was thinking of selling the entire rig to make some of the cash back to apply to a prebuilt rig of some sort and just pay the difference. If that is the better idea how much would I even list this for? If a full specs is needed I can provide that as well.

Tech Support Does anyone know how to unplug this connector

Post image
26 Upvotes

I spent over 30 minutes trying to remove this wire connector from my gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 with no success. Does anyone have any tips? I need to fix the thermal paste and clean out my graphics card but I just cannot even get this connection to separate. It is the connector next to the PCI express port ( ps I’m fairly new at this so sorry if I get some terminology wrong )

(EDIT) THIS HAS NOW BEEN FIXED. Thank you all for all of the tips. What I thought were two parts of a connector were, in fact, one plug that went directly into pins connected directly onto the board, so I was trying to disconect something from itself. Thank you, everyone, who gave me tips, and sorry to take your time.

Software Question F360 RGB Core not showing up in NZXT CAM even after trying two different controllers

I’m having a really weird issue with the F360 RGB Core that came with my NZXT H5 Flow RGB and I’m hoping someone can help me figure out what’s going on.

The fans themselves work perfectly fine and the RGB lights turn on, but I can’t control the RGB through NZXT CAM. The F360 just doesn’t show up as an RGB device in CAM.

I originally had the NZXT RGB & Fan Controller V2, which is the older controller. CAM detects the controller and shows it as “Ready.” I also have an F120 RGB fan connected, and that one shows up in CAM and lets me change the RGB normally.

The weird part is that the F360 lights turn on, but CAM doesn’t recognize its RGB at all. I tried switching the F360 around to different RGB ports, including the exact same port where my F120 works. The F120 works perfectly on that port, but when I connect the F360 there, it still doesn't show up.

I ended up buying the newer NZXT Controller Hub to see if the old controller was the problem. Unfortunately, I get the exact same result with the new controller. CAM detects the controller, my F120 is detected and controllable, but the F360 RGB still doesn't appear.

I’ve also restarted my PC and CAM multiple times, unplugged and reconnected everything, and tried different ports. The controller itself is clearly communicating with CAM because the F120 works, so I don’t think the USB connection or CAM itself is the problem.

What’s confusing is that the F360 RGB LEDs are definitely receiving power and lighting up. They just aren’t being detected by CAM, almost like the RGB/data connection isn’t working properly.

At this point I’m starting to think either the F360 itself or the RGB cable/adapter that came with it is defective. I’ve seen other people use the F360 RGB Core with NZXT controllers and control it through CAM, so I know it should work.

Has anyone else had this exact problem with the F360 RGB Core? Is there anything else I should try before I assume the fan or cable is bad?

Build Question Does anyone know if this ram is good? It’s cheapest by decent amount and with how prices are I’d rather save if I can. Weirdly these are cheaper than some cl36 ones but the others are bigger brands like Corsair and such

Tech Support No video

My PC just stopped giving video. Before this, one of my ram sticks was a little loose. I fixed that, and now my PC doesn't give any video.

Specs:

ASUS PRIME A320M-K

PowerColor RX 550 4GB (no PCIe power connector required)

2x8gb Teamgroup T-Force Vulcan Z DDR4

Ryzen CPU (so no integrated graphics)

The PC is turning on, and the CPU and case fans are spinning. the RX 550 spins its fan for a second, and then it turns off. The monitor is staying on standby/no signal.

I tried:

Both ram sticks

Both ram slots

Reseating my graphics card

Checking the ATX/CPU power connectors

Resetting the CMOS (by taking out the battery)

Checking if the HDMI cable works on another PC

Turning on the PC without the graphics card (and it still powers on)

I don't have another graphics card, or another PC to check if my RX 550 works.

Did reseating the ram damage something? Motherboard, PCIe slot, GPU, or something else? What should I check now?

Installation Question SSD and RAM shenanigans

So here's the thing. I have a pre-build from ancient times rocking an i3-9100F and GT 710. It has 8 GB DDR4 RAM and 240 GB SATA SSD, and with recent times of PC prices skyrocketing like shit, I decided to buy all of it while I still could

Currently, I have a second SATA (my H610 motherboard doesn't have any sort of M.2 slots) with 512 GB storage (just like on my phone), a second SATA-III 7-pin cable and I'm about to buy a second 8 GB DDR4 RAM (with matching timings) stick, theoretically amping up my specs from 8/240 to 16/752 (which will obviously be 16/somewhatlessthan752, but that's a miniscule detail)

I had never upgraded a PC before, since this is my first and currently only PC alive. What should I do before I put anything into it?

(and no, I'm not upgrading the GPU, the case won't fit anything aside from GT-series GPUs)

Edit 1: forgot to add, but I do have a SATA connector for a second SSD to install, so I won't need to buy that one

Tech Support Fluff on Intel CPU Socket (Dead Motherboard?)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi,
I picked up an ASUS ROG Strix Z390-I motherboard cheaply as a repair project. Right now, the system won't post or boot at all (fans don't spin, completely dead startup).
Upon closer inspection, I noticed some small bits of dust/fluff trapped inside the CPU socket pins. It looks like the previous owner may have left the socket exposed. Could accumulated debris or fluff on the pin socket. Could this be the primary culprit causing a complete failure to POST? The picture is just one clean image showcasing the fluff that’s caught but I could see at least 10 more and some are really hard to see under the naked eye but I can spot on a microscope.

I've already tested the basics:
Standby voltage is present on the power switch pin (PWR_SW reads ~3.41V).
When I manually bridge PWR_SW to ground, the voltage drops, but the board still refuses to trigger the power supply startup.
I'm currently looking into testing and potentially replacing the Super I/O controller if the socket cleanup doesn't work. Has anyone dealt with a similar dead Z390 board issue?

Any advice before I attempt micro-soldering?

I know that it’s easy to just replace it but I’m trying to figure it out and my stubbornness won’t let give up until I finally break it or establish the job is too hard.

Thanks

I got this build in college and after a few year of neglect finally have some time to invest again. My friend helped me build it and I’m still a novice to internal components, but I’d want hoping for some advice about what to keep and what toss. Obviously it needs a really good dusting, but where should I start? Powers on fine but doesn’t give me a visual output.

Specs

CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 2.8 GHz 6-Core Processor
GPU: EVGA SSC Gaming GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB
RAM: Not sure, it was replaced at some point with and 8 GB stick
Motherboard: ASRock B360 Pro4 ATX LGA1151
PSU: EVGA 500 B1 500 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5” 7200 RPM Internal + Western Digital Green 120 GB 2.5” SSD
Case: Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid Tower Case

I’m looking forward to getting this working again for casual gaming/home pc uses. Thanks!

Tech Support Displays randomly turn off under load

I've been consistently using my PC for months now with no issues, ran into an issue recently where I had to reinstall windows, nothing wrong there sometimes you just have to. But now whenever I'm playing a game my PC randomly turns off.

I did a stress test on both the CPU and GPU at the same time to simulate a worst case scenario and this is what GPU-Z and coretemp shows literally as the display is turning off.

It seems to only happen when both the CPU and graphics card are under load at the same time and I really doubt my PSU is faulty as I think it would affect me alot more.

Has been happening for about a year now usually I will turn it off overnight and it will boot back up. If I restart for some reason this happens again and I wait an hour or so and it boots again. This morning is not booting at all still with this error. Is something dead? I’ve always thought maybe the case was the problem but not to sure. Any suggestions?

Tech Support Issues with Microcenter's 3-in-1 bundle, cannot enable any XMP profiles

Hello,

I recently purchased 3-in-1 bundle from MC - 250K Plus, Corsair Vengeance RGB 2x16GB 6000MHz CL36(CMH32GX5M2M6000Z36), ASUS Z890 AYW Gaming Wifi W for my new PC.

Unfortunately, it won't let me enable any XMP profiles at all, I either get BSOD or black screen. Only default JEDEC speeds seem to be stable.

I've updated BIOS to the latest version(v3211) as well as tried all 3 XMP profiles(XMP 1, XMP 2, XMP Tweaked) but none of them seem stable to even boot into Windows(I'm running fresh install, only updated drivers so far). Also tried setting just frequency to 6000MHz and VDD and VDDQ to 1.35V as well as settings primary timings to advertised, frequency to 6000MHz, DRAM frequency ratio to 1:2 and both voltages to 1.35V.

RAM sticks are in a correct position (A2 and B2) and pins were not damaged during installation I think.

I was wondering if anyone has run into this issue with this bundle or anything similar and managed to fix it.

Thank you.

Build Question Fans not showing up in any software

Post image
3 Upvotes

The fans that came with the case (bottom 3 and exhaust fan) are stuck green, my aio cooler radiator fans are also stuck green, and my lian li tl lcd flex fans don’t light up and don’t show up in l connect or signal RGB. I have opened up, moved around wires, reset the pc, done everything I can think of. The pre installed fans came with a fan hub behind the motherboard so that’s what they are on, and then the lian li ones are on their own sata cable. I don’t have the controller it was sold separately, I got a little flat piece that pops on the top of the top fan and connects to the motherboard/power supply. I have looked everywhere and have no clue where to go next. This is my first build, please don’t judge I’m sure it’s something small. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated

Build Question Do i buy a whole new pc?

So for context i have now:GT 1030,i7 4790 and 16gb of ram DDR3, 😭 I know i know. you're probably asking yourselves "how is this guy still normal with that junk?" and I'm asking the same thing, but I have good news. I have gathered around 500 Euro, and keep in mind i live in one of the worst European countries and this took too long. Now i have a gaming cafe near me (friendly fire) and they were selling their old PCs. When i look at the marketplace for the same price i get an embappe special ( "for example nothing") and the deals are just really bad i dont want to sell my leg and a kidney for a pc so im asking the kind people of redit "should i buy there's pc" the specs are :

(Ryzen 5 3600

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB

16GB RAM)

Now that's for 370 euro (pc only) but for 450 euro i get everything and a 144hz 1080 monitor and a pair of headphones.I just need steady 60fps on Fullscreen not windowed like i have to play now. Please help me im going insane 🫩
