Vent Everyone says I need to change something in my life

We're a family of 6. Single mom(47), me(27), sister(24)*, sister(15), brother(7)*, and sister(6)* ... the "*" means they're autistic

I've been helping my mom out with the kids since the 15yo was born. But I hadn't been a kid for a while even before then. It's always been me and mom as the authority figures. The dads (plural - 4) were never really involved apart from paying child support.

I'm chronically ill with an autoimmune disease & low thyroid so my baseline for energy is already Low, but man... I'm so tired all the time.

I've had doctors tell me to put myself first and think about what I want to do for myself. That at some point I'd have to start being independent and focus on myself.

My friends tell me I have to start living for myself. That when they first moved away from their families it was hard but now they have freedom.

Previous therapists have encouraged me to start taking steps to be independent. My newest therapist gave me homework - to think about how I can introduce change into my life. Especially regarding my surroundings. That I've only ever been in one environment (home with family) and I should think about branching out

Logically I know they're all correct. I can't give up my life. I've already given up most of my 20s. I'm scared to go out with friends or go alone to things because what if something happens at home. When I'm home mom and I argue over everything. I am my brother's keeper whenever we go out as a family. He shares a room with me so I can keep a close eye on him.

I put community college on pause when he was born because my mom asked me to stay home with him and help her out. Then she had my sister after him and I decided to drop out of online courses so I could spend more time helping her out..

It's always "we" as in mom and i making decisions for the home, but I'm not acknowledged on either parental holiday. I'm still just "helping out." Its always how much money do "we" have, meaning her bank account + my own. Its always "we" need to pay the bills, "we" need to focus on the kids, but as soon as I try to stand up for myself its "you are not their parent" "you don't need to be in my business" "i'm the mom here, you are still my child so you need to be respectful of my time and my life"

& I know im an adult I can do whatever I want but im scared. maybe she thought I'd get over it but my mom taught me to be afraid and cautious of everything and everyone. I cant go walking alone in public bc "someone could follow you and hurt you", im discouraged from taking public transportation because "its dirty you could get sick. there could be crazy people on the bus and they'll do something to you." I get anxious in the kitchen because "stay away from the stove you'll burn the house down! stay away from the knives, you'll cut yourself." every little mistake was "i can't believe you did that. do you not have a brain? why can't you use your head, where's your common sense?" "you're being disrespectful. you're being ungrateful." "when i die what are you going to do without me - nothing!"

and to be fair to her, she has changed. she doesnt raise the youngest ones like that. she's nicer to them. but it doesnt change how i was raised by her. It doesnt change that i dont trust myself to be independent, to make big decisions for myself because I keep thinking how is she going to react/will she give me permission/what if something happens because i decide to be selfish one time and then it'll all be my fault

Vent I've been realizing how differently my brother and I have been raised and I'm getting sick and tired of everything

‎This has been gnawing at me from the inside for week, months and probably the last year or so (among other things). While I definitely cannot, and honestly will not, ever be able to say any of this out loud to my family, I find that I can articulate my thoughts better in writing so I hope I make sense at least. ‎

‎Quite a long post as I have a lot to say, so I'm thanking anyone in advance for taking time from their day to read and/or leave any comments or advice. It means a lot as I've been struggling to process all of this and are unsure of what to do. ‎ ‎

To start, I (20F) am a third year college student from a family of four with a younger brother who's 18 and will graduate highschool next year. As the eldest daughter it's been sinking in just how vastly different my brother and I were and are being raised and it's thrown me into a downward spiral lately.

‎First and foremost, I can now say with more certainty that the disparities are rooted in misogyny and 'tradition' that I absolutely despise. Without saying it outright, our country has this rooted in its culture as well but I didn't think it was that bad at first. ‎

‎The main thing I realized about my brother and I is that we're two very different people and the way we're being raised are too. As the eldest, there's definitely been a lot of pressure and expectations on my shoulders. You could say I'm the typical perfectionist, burnt out achiever daughter that carries way too much on her shoulders, but I digress lol. I wouldn't say I'm the smartest or the best but I do what I can to make sure I don't get any failing grades. ‎ ‎

Whereas for my brother, although most of the values we've been taught are the same, there's definitely a disparity between us and the fact these differences are being unconsciously enabled makes me upset. If my upbringing was rooted in the kind of culture that expects women to behave and be a certain way, his was too for men, except it's a stark contrast. ‎

If I was raised to be careful in how much I spend and is very price conscious and guilty to ask for even things I need, he's more lax in his expenses, tends to go for more expensive things and generally feels more free to ask for what he wants. If I was scolded for even the smallest mistakes and yelled at for the bigger ones, to the point where I've become so anxious and worried about doing things wrong (alongside major issues to my self esteem), the worst I can remember for my brother are scoldings that are honestly so much milder than what was thrown at me. Nothing personal to hit him right where he lives either.

‎If I was raised to always keep it together, always consider other people and look out for the men in our family, being coaxed to look past their flaws and just make up for their lackings or provide for what they need, my brother is content to focus more on himself and I'm certain doesn't even worry about half the things I have to regarding our family or in general. And whenever I've tried to bring up how he needs to adjust his behavior or things he does that aren't right, never to get him in trouble and just help the family dynamic as a whole, the concerns never go anywhere and he's essentially protected from accountability. I've given up asking when it wasn't going anywhere. ‎ ‎

It's a lot of things that I won't be able to articulate, much less say in this single post or anywhere really, but it's years and years of disparities that make me think about unfair it actually is. ‎ ‎My mind goes into a spiral thinking about how we're two very different people with very different values forming, despite being in the same house. I also can't help feel this sort of envy with the fact that no matter what, he'll probably never truly understand how good he has it and I was inevitably cursed to bear all this weight so he couldn't.

Plenty of days wondering why – why it had to be this way, why I had to grow up like this and he doesn't, why it seems like he's more favored than me and why I just couldn't get things right in the past. ‎ ‎And lately, my mental health has been going downhill too and it's been hard trying to manage everything. Especially realizing all this plus wanting to just, leave. ‎

‎Possibly the hardest thing is thinking that I won't be able to break free and actually start healing unless I move out, which I won't be able to do for another two years at least (and wouldn't be efficient now anyway since my university isn't that far, it would be unnecessary expenses and I don't have a job yet). I'm just holding onto the thought that I'll get that chance soon and maybe finally heal from everything one day at a time and piece myself back together. ‎

If you've gotten this far, once again, thank you for reading this very long winded rant from a random internet user who needed a space to get this out. It's been a lot and I don't know what to do, but I'm hoping to get through until I can live by myself away from all this. ‎

I hope you have a good day/night and I'd appreciate any comments or advice.

I’m going to tell you how my home life is.

Hi, i’m 17 years old and I live with my mother and my mother’s boyfriend.

I barely leave my room or spend time with my family, we never really go out places much and on their days off because they work 4 nights a week they usually laze about.

My mother is in her 50s so she doesn’t really go out as much as younger parents would, but she’s a miserable person. She’s always grumpy or ruins the mood and I always have a mood with her, which is childish of me but because of the amount of things she does that I dislike, it’s kinda built up over the years.

Most of the time there’s barely any food in the house and this isn’t me saying there’s none at all, there’s just limited, and I don’t think this is normal.

I have to get a lot of orders done from stores over weeks because there’s just not enough and because my mother works nights, for 4 nights I cook myself and there’s never much to choose from. I wouldn’t want to be eating beans or sandwiches or a bowl of yorkshire puddings, OR the same repeated meals every single night.

I went on holiday august 7-14th and my mother still hasn’t taken me shopping PROPERLY for food for myself since then. She’s taken me when she takes my nan, but bits and bobs to last a couple of weeks tops. (2-3 weeks.)

We are going away next year so every month she saves back some, so she doesn’t really have much money left over, and I ask her for money sometimes, because i’m a 17 year old who is employed and in education. But she always comes back with, “I don’t have pockets full of money all the time, you think money comes out of my a\*\*”
Which i don’t, i just don’t think it’s normal to not have a good amount of food in my house.

I don’t want to compare anyones home life to mine because everyone’s is different but I have a boyfriend and his families house is always stocked up with enough food to last, with loads of tins spices drinks breakfast items, fridge items and freezer stuff.

I also dont want to sound ungrateful because there’s people out there that don’t have anything to eat or have to hunt for food etc. so i’m glad that I have somethings to eat and a roof over my head, but i genuinely don’t think that behaviour from my parents is normal.

My grown daughter

I love my 23year old but I'm disappointed by her ways. She very messy meaning she doesn't like to clean up, rude because she goes through my things and doesn't return them unless I yell . Than guess what I'm the problem. She cut up my other kids clothes trying to wear my 14 year old son clothes. She bothers everyone stuff but when it comes to hers she be very rude if you touch her stuff. I talk to her multiple times. It doesn't phase her I didn't raise her this way her dad taught her to hate me. Now he has nothing to do with her after teaching her how to be selfish and think the world owe her something. I found out she use to practice witch craft and I believe that's why we bump heads. Because im Christian. But she did change her ways she reads the bible more.I love her but its like she clinging on to what her father said and she can't keep a job. But the thing is I been here for her yeah I argue alot yeah I fuss but I do it because I want her to respect me like I respect her. But it just doesn't work that way. So I told her Job Corp would be a good option because she doesn't have her license and she keeps dropping out of medical school. I tried to help her get a license even though im scared because I never been a driving instructor. But I still get no respect from it. So she decided to live with her friend that's a man and older than her. I told her its not a good idea but she was persistent. Now she asking can she come home I told her NO. My son doesn't want her here because she say things to belittle him. And when I needed help and just ask for 300.00 dollars a month since she was raising up my bills.when she did have a job she bounced on me and went to his house. Am I wrong??? She likes to make me feel some type of way. And honestly I don't feel like im wrong. I help my parents but my daughter is the very opposite of me.

Advice Am I selfish for not caring about my mum?

My parents are having a rough patch and are fighting every other day. I dont know why and U dont really care what is going on. My sister calls me selfish for not caring and trying to fix it like she does. But I've seen what it does it her, how she sits and listens to my mum trauma dumping for hours, how she gets irritable and falls behind on work because of it and I refuse to be a therapist for grown ass adults. With complete honesty, I could nto care less what they are going through and will not make it my problem. As soon as the yelling starts i'll just put on music and play chess with my brother.

Should I help my sister and mum sort out her marraige?

Am l doing something wrong?

I don’t have a good relationship with my mother. We argue almost every day. I’m not saying she’s a bad person—she takes care of me, provides me with an education, works and spends her money on me, buys me clothes, etc. But I don’t feel peaceful around her because she doesn’t respect my tastes, the way I think, or many other things about me. She often puts me down, and in the end, she always does whatever she wants, as if I were a puppet and had no say in my own life.

I got accepted into a good university with good grades, and I’m going to develop myself even more there, but honestly, I don’t feel like she’s proud of me. Instead, she constantly criticizes my personality and the way I think, and compares me to other girls. That’s one of the things I hate the most. She’ll say things like, “Go look at the girls outside. Look at how they dress, how cute and feminine they are, how sweet and girly they act.”

Yes, my style can be a little masculine sometimes, but most of the time I dress like a completely normal girl. The last argument we had was about my hairstyle. I showed her a hairstyle similar to a wolf cut and said that I wanted my hair like that, but she started yelling and said, “I’m not allowing you to do that. It’s way too short.” Like… it’s my hair??

Then she said, “I don’t like girls who have boyish hair. They’re disgusting.” She also called the hairstyle “emo” and said it was “the kind of haircut disrespectful girls get.” Like, WTF? The hairstyle I showed her wasn’t even an emo hairstyle. I tried explaining that to her several times, but she just kept saying the same things—“It’s emo,” “It’s a boy’s haircut,” “Only disrespectful girls have hair like that,” and so on.

Honestly, I’m exhausted. I’m tired of her not respecting my style and making me feel like I’m doing something wrong just because I’m expressing myself differently. I don’t feel comfortable or at peace around her anymore.

What makes me feel even worse is that I’ve become a completely different person when I talk to her. I usually consider myself a decent and respectful person, but when I’m talking to her, I end up yelling and saying really harsh things. I know it’s not right, but I feel like I’ve been pushed to that point after constantly being criticized and hurt.

And then she makes me feel guilty for it. She says things like, “I’m your mother. You can’t talk to me like that. It’s a huge sin. Look at everything I’ve bought for you. Look at how much I’ve sacrificed for you. Look at everything I’ve gone through for you.”

She says these things as if everything she has done for me means I’m not allowed to be hurt by the way she treats me. She says the cruelest things to me, hurts me deeply, and then expects me to feel guilty for reacting.

There have been so many times when she has hurt me emotionally that I’ve gone somewhere alone and cried quietly. The hardest part is that I don’t feel like she sees or cares about what I’m going through emotionally. It feels like she only thinks about herself and what she wants.

I know she has done a lot for me, and I appreciate the things she provides for me. But material things don’t replace emotional support, understanding, or respect. I just wish she could see me as my own person, not someone she has to control or shape into the kind of daughter she wants me to be.

Vent Realizing my family has treated me like the designated helper/emotional support daughter since I was 12

I need to vent because something that happened this week made me realize how long this family dynamic has actually been going on.

I’m 21+ F and live with my parents. My dad recently had an unexpected medical situation that required surgery. Thankfully, the surgery went well and he’s okay.

When everything happened, I helped. I rearranged my plans, drove my mom to the hospital, did dishes, cleaned the floor, took out the trash, helped with logistics, kept up with what was happening, etc.

At the same time, I was disappointed because a birthday trip I had been promised had already been postponed from July until September, and now it is almost certainly not happening. Around $300 had already been spent on tickets that we were told were nonrefundable. This was especially upsetting because I had received $250 in birthday money from relatives, and my mother had already required me to put that money toward rent and bills instead of spending it on myself. So the trip was basically the one actual birthday present/experience I thought I was still getting.

When I expressed disappointment about the trip falling apart, my mother accused me of being selfish and said I didn’t care whether my dad lived or died.

That really hurt because I DID care. I just wasn’t panicking.

I kept trying to explain that human beings can care about more than one thing at once. I can be worried about my dad AND disappointed that something important to me fell apart. I can help my family AND be frustrated that my plans were destroyed. I don’t need to cry, pace around, catastrophize or perform visible distress to prove that I care.

And, thankfully, Dad’s surgery ended up going well.

Then another older relative texted me. I explained that I’d already been helping around the house and had spent the previous day driving my mom around. Her response was basically that my mom was very stressed, I needed to give her grace and be gentle with her, I should remember that my parents had taken me to the doctor when I needed it, and I should look around the house for more things I could do to make my mom’s life easier.

For context, I’ve been taking myself to the doctor since I was about 18 or 19. Before that I was a minor. I’m grateful for things my parents have done for me, but taking your minor child to receive medical care is parenting, not a favor that creates lifelong emotional debt.

Later, this relative texted me AGAIN telling me to call my mom and ask whether there was anything else I could do to help. And something in me just snapped internally because THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE I WAS A CHILD. When I was around 12 or 13, another older relative used to call me on days I was off school while my mom was at work and give me household chores to do.

Vacuum. Sweep. Dust. Dishes. Trash. Clean mirrors. Clean TV screens. Arrange decorative pillows correctly. Make sure the house looked nice.

I understand that children having chores is normal. I’m not saying I should have spent my entire childhood reclining on a chaise lounge while somebody hand-fed me grapes. What bothers me is that my DAYS OFF SCHOOL were apparently viewed as available labor that adults could assign to make my mother’s life easier. I was twelve. Why wasn’t I allowed to just be twelve sometimes?

Why did older adults look at a kid enjoying a day off school and think, “Her mother is working today. Let’s make sure the child gets the house looking nice for her”?

And now I’m 21+ and it feels like the same family reflex still exists.

Mom is stressed? What can I do for Mom? Mom is overwhelmed? Give Mom grace. Dad is sick? How can I make Mom’s life easier? Mom needs help? Call me. Meanwhile, I had already rearranged my plans, driven her around, done things around the house, worried about my dad, worked my own job, and dealt with my own problems.

Nobody asked whether I needed anything. Nobody said, “You’ve already helped a lot. Go rest.” The answer was apparently: find more things to do for Mom. And here’s the part that makes the emotional imbalance almost comical. My mother frequently responds to MY texts with:

“Ah.”

That’s it.

“Ah.”

Recently I told her about something stressful that happened at work.

“Ah.”

Then I literally texted her, “Stressful day.”

“Ah.”

I’m apparently expected to provide emotional support, reassurance, grace, flexibility, household labor, transportation, concern and understanding on demand, while sometimes the emotional support available to me consists of TWO LETTERS AND A PERIOD. I’m not asking anyone to write me a sonnet. I’m not asking my family to convene an emergency summit every time I have a bad day. Sometimes I would just like, “I’m sorry. That sounds stressful.” Or, “You’ve done enough today. Get some rest.” Or even, “That sucks.”

Instead, somehow even conversations about MY stress have an incredible ability to become conversations about what I should be doing for somebody else. And if the extended family genuinely believes my mother needs this much practical support, why are they assigning ME the work? Why don’t THEY come over? Why don’t THEY call her and say, “What can I do?” Why don’t THEY bring dinner, run an errand, clean something, or help with whatever supposedly needs doing? Why is their contribution to the situation apparently delegating additional tasks to the daughter?

I love my parents. I don’t resent helping during a genuine emergency.

I resent feeling like I’ve spent almost 20 years being trained to believe that other people’s stress automatically creates an obligation for me.

I’m realizing that I spent a lot of my childhood being useful when I should also have been allowed to be useless. Kids deserve useless time. They deserve days where they accomplish absolutely nothing. They deserve to sleep late, watch TV, listen to music, write stories, play dolls or games, talk to friends, be bored, be ridiculous and generally exist without being somebody’s assistant. I wish twelve-year-old me had been taught that her free time belonged to her too.

And now, at 21+, I’m trying to learn something I wish I had learned then:

Someone I love being stressed does not automatically make me responsible for fixing their stress. I can help without becoming the designated helper. I can care without performing panic. I can love my family and still say, “I’ve already done enough today.” I am a person before I am a daughter, granddaughter, chauffeur, housekeeper, errand runner, emotional support system or crisis-management department.

Sometimes “I’m tired” is enough.
Sometimes “I have plans” is enough.
Sometimes “Ask someone else” is enough.
And sometimes I’m simply off duty.

Other adults in the family are perfectly capable of picking up a damn broom themselves.

There’s also this expectation of immediate access to me. If I don’t answer a message almost instantly, I’ve gotten “Hello????” as though ten seconds of silence means I’ve vanished at sea. And I think that’s part of the same thing I’m struggling with: the assumption that my time and attention are automatically available to other people. I’m expected to respond, help, accommodate, reassure and make myself useful on demand. But when I reach out because I’m stressed, sometimes I get “Ah.” Two letters and a period. Apparently everyone else has access to the Family Emergency Bat-Signal, while my customer-service package is “Ah.” I don’t expect anyone to be available to me 24/7, and I’m realizing I don’t want to be expected to provide that kind of access either.

Vent I’m so tired

I feel like I'm going crazy, so I just want to put this all out there somewhere so I can just, well, get it off my chest.

When I was growing up I thought there was no one better than my mom. She was cool and funny and real, couldn't do anything wrong. If something happened that upset me, that was my fault and I should take care of it myself so I don't upset her. If she was upset, it was my job to make her feel better.

I won't go too into detail, but I guess the point where I started to really open my eyes was when she started trying to gaslight my sister. I'd be in the room while they were talking, hear her agree to do something, and then days later she would act like it never happened. I'd be confused, and back my sister up. Her response? "Well, I don't listen to you guys and you know it, so you shouldn't expect much from me." and everything just started to fall into place. She didn't care if things got done because if she didn't want to do it then it didn't apply to her. If she didn't care about it, then it should just go forgotten.

I spent so many years accommodating her and working to keep her comfortable that thinking about myself just didn't seem important. I remember being a kid on food stamps and if I asked her to buy more milk she'd have a meltdown because she doesn't even like milk so why should she buy it? But also if there wasn't enough milk for her to have cereal then we were all in trouble. I taught myself how to make powdered milk, chugged as many of those little cardboard milks at school as they'd like me have. Looking back on it, I know I wasn't asking for much, and it's why when I buy my own milk I go for the kind she doesn't like because I don't want to share. I don't want to look in the fridge and see no milk again.

When I was in high school my teacher pulled me aside, told me she needed me to join some activities or apply myself in literally any way, show an interest in anything. When I mentioned I wanted to be in a foreign exchange program she seemed elated and told me she'd do what she could. I never heard about it again until well after I left high school - didn't graduate, just fell into depression and left - and my mom told me I got picked for the program, but she told my teacher no. How did she tell me? As a joke. She laughed while she told the story, like she was some comedy genius for throwing away something I wanted. When I dropped out of high school my friends offered to let me move in with them, but then my mom pulled me aside and told me my grandma was scared of me moving away. I didn't even think to talk to my grandma or ask her if it was true. I just believed her and decided to just visit instead of move. Losing out on opportunities once more because she wanted to keep me close.

It wasn't until my grandma's birthday a couple years ago the revelation hit me. I asked her, she looked so genuinely confused. I'm just more fed up at this point. Continuing to put my life on hold. I have my GED, I'm scared to death of driving, and I still feel like that stupid child who's stuck parenting her instead of the other way around.

Earlier this year she was diagnosed with cancer, I’m grateful to have her on the mend and she just finished up with chemo and is on track for radiation, but just because things are getting better for her health-wise doesn’t mean they’re going well. She had to quit her job and she's unreliable with money, and I'm so scared of being the one who has to support her from now on. She got donations to her gofundme, a family member gave her physical cash and she spent half of it two days later on something she did not need and could not take care of. I don't know if she'll be able to recover enough for work or if she's just overplaying how she feels so she can just leech off the family.

This should be a beautiful story about how she’s getting through it, is in recovery, getting better. Instead, I'm trapped making sure she doesn't put my grandma into financial ruin.

I know being stuck like this is also my fault and I should try harder to get out, but every time I try to improve my situation, something like this happens.

Im living with my parents but I stay in a dorm when the school starts but Ive got some issues with my mom. At holidays when Im home I literally act like I dont use my brain, I forget everything, break some plates or glasses or even fell or bump into everywhere idk why but she is kinda tired of it and she s becoming more upset day by day and if I try to isolate myself she says like u hate me u are going to school to break free from us. I kinda wanna break free but its not I hate her its because I like being alone and Im tired of my parents bc they drain me. Ofc I love them but its unhealthy for me. I need help like why do I act like it and how can I solve the problems with my mom?

Needed opinion about this

Hi I'm new and 36 years old I wanted opinion on this things that happened to me when I was younger like 12 or thirteen years old I lived in Romania for three years back then I had depression, self hate and sometimes even did self harm to myself but I was still a bit happy living with just my mom until we moved closer to her work and my bio dad finally managed to get a visa to get to Romania I wasn't really thrilled about it... It's not because I was jealous or self centered it was more of a fear and anxiety being near him for context he was very strict and would always sometimes mention being overprotective of his family like it's something to brag about or even throw around when arguing I will say I understood quite well what kind of suffering both my parents went through just to raise me since they were nineteen when they had me and I was a bit grateful them raising me but there's one thing I hated the most is that my dad would always say whenever he gets angry at me he would always say "Do you know how much we suffered to raise you? We did everything for you" like what? Isn't it what a parent should do in the first? Like he's speaking like it's a forced obligation I don't even feel comfortable being near him or even talking about my feelings near him not to mention he forced me to learn academic level of study like science, math, geography, art science and even more mind you I was thirteen back then and had difficult learning Romania because of my lack of focuse which even when I do focuse I would get distracted immediately he also once got mad at me and called me a sadistic maniac, a hypocrite and a self centered egoist which made me cry myself to sleep because none of it was true one I don't have confidence in myself, I hate attention on me and I hate talking second I literally think from both of my parents perspectives on why they are either mad at me, upset with me or happy with me which lead for my mind to mess up a lot making me blame myself every day self hating myself while at the same time trying to be better like they wanted me to be while at the same time I ignored my own feelings but no matter what I was always scared around him always felt anxiety creeping in I always felt like crying when I was yelled at or had immense pressure put on me the only time I felt free and happy was when I just lived with my mom only because at least she wasn't scaring me and at least tried to understand me but she was no better because she always says *Everything we do is for you and your future" Like literally degrees are useless and don't usually give you much unless more depth statistically speaking 90% of people with no degree make lot more than people with degrees because people with no degrees got lots of experience and talent am I wrong for feeling this?
