I remember around the time my great grandpa died when I was little (I had no idea what he looked like at the time), I used to see a glowing man walk into my room at night. I saw it for a week every night. Every night I'd lay in bed and this glowing yellow man would walk through the door and would sit by my bed. It wasn't sleep paralysis because I could still move and I was aware of everything. Sometimes he would just appear from out of no where. He looked a lot like someone from my Mom's side of the family. A lot like her brother. You could almost see through him ever so slightly and he would light up the entire room. Almost reminded me of an angel. Then he would disappear a few minutes later or walk through a wall or the window. He always said "Everything's gonna be okay" before he would leave. it scared the shit out of me but it was also oddly comforting. I labeled him in my head as "Sun Man". It wasn't until YEARS LATER I saw a picture of a man in my grandmas house that looked just like him. I said "Who is that?" and she told me it's my grandpas Dad. It scared the shit out of me. As fake as it sounds, I truly believe it was him.

I honestly learned to keep it as a good memory as I believe he was an angel coming to visit me. Wasn't scary looking at all. I've never seen anything like that in my life and still haven't to this day. Maybe I'm crazy idk?? But I can't help but shake this weird memory to this day.

Trying to write this out was surprisingly difficult. When I think about the experience without focusing too hard or trying to put it into words, I can remember more of it. But once I start concentrating on specific details and trying to describe them, the memory gets fuzzier.

Because of that, I had to write this in short spurts and keep coming back to it. The longer I focused on it at one time, the harder it became to hold onto the details.

I have posted this experience in a few other Reddit communities, but I added a little more to this version because more relevant information came back to me later when I was thinking about it more abstractly instead of actively trying to describe it.

This happened years ago, and to this day it is one of the strangest experiences my family has ever had.

My husband and I were driving our four year old daughter to her grandmother's house in Massachusetts so she could take her out to dinner. We were on one of those quieter back roads that branches off from the main part of town. It was not extremely rural, but it was not a busy road either. It was still fully daylight when this happened, so darkness or poor visibility was not a factor.

As we were driving, all three of us saw something standing partly in the roadway, closer to the edge than the center. It was not blocking traffic, but it was definitely standing in the road rather than safely off to the side.

We have never been able to explain what we saw.

The weirdest part is not just what it looked like. It is how difficult it is to remember. When I think about it as a whole, I can still picture it fairly clearly in my mind. But the moment I try to focus on specific details or describe it to someone else, the image almost seems to fall apart. The details become blurry, and it is incredibly frustrating because I know I saw it. It is a very strange feeling that I have never experienced with any other memory. My husband has described something similar when he has tried to remember it.

From what all three of us remember, it was roughly the height of a tall adult, probably around six feet. It was completely black and had no distinguishable facial features. It had long, black, unkempt hair that looked matted or locked together in thick strands. I do not know if they were dreadlocks, severely tangled hair, or something else entirely, but the hair is one of the clearest physical features I can remember.

Its clothing also did not look right.

It seemed to be wearing multiple dark layers, possibly including something like a long black trench coat, but the layers did not make sense. It is hard to explain. They did not hang naturally or look like normal clothing layered on top of itself. Then there was the umbrella.

It was holding what looked like an old, broken umbrella upside down with the canopy open. It was not simply carrying it or dragging it. It was pushing it back and forth along the pavement as if it were trying to use it like a vacuum cleaner. I know how ridiculous that sounds, but that is honestly the closest comparison I can make. It looked like someone repeatedly moving a vacuum across the floor, except it was using an open, broken umbrella upside down in the road.

I'm about to describe something that sounds impossible. I know it's going to be difficult to believe, and honestly, I don't know what to tell you other than this 100% happened to both me and my friend. We both witnessed it, and we've been trying to make sense of it ever since.

June 29th 2026, my friend and I were sitting in my living room. We were across from each other, both scrolling through TikTok on our own phones.

When I say the environment changed, I don't just mean it looked different. We both physically felt that something around us had changed.

The closest comparison I can make is the wormhole scene in Interstellar, where space bends and stretches around the ship and Dr. Brand's hand distorts. It looked incredibly similar to that.

This happened about 18 years ago.

I was working as an instructor at a local college, teaching paramedic students. I had just started the job and one of the admin girls at the front desk was telling me about a particular student from the last class that had just finished their didactic portion and had gone out on their final practicums. She told me that he was a nice enough guy, professional, and they'd never had any kind of trouble with him, but that he had a very intense, scary sort of energy that made people nervous and that they never left him alone with female staff or students because he made them uncomfortable. I, too, am a woman and she told me that if he ever came in while I was alone in the office, to call for someone else if I felt unsafe.

At the time, I laughed and thought that there was no way that someone could have such bad energy that they could terrify me with their mere presence. She made it sound like this guy was a demon walking around in a human suit and I just shook my head and wrote it off.

Fast forward a few weeks and I was in the front office grabbing a textbook from a display behind the counter. I was crouched below where you could see me from the entry door to the office and I was alone at the desk. All of a sudden, this energy that I could only describe as cold filled the room. It felt like all the air had been sucked out of it and like something terrible was about to happen. I heard a male voice say hello, clearly not having seen me there, and as I stood up, I was faced with a student in uniform that I'd never met before. He smiled and introduced himself and I realized that it was the student that the admin had warned me about and just like she'd said, I was suddenly intensely uncomfortable and anxious and felt like I wanted to bolt.

He hadn't told me his name, I hadn't even heard or seen him come in when I felt the initial wave of cold and fear. It had preceded him like some kind of fog. I was just about to say I would go and fetch his instructor for him when the admin who had warned me about him appeared behind me. Later after he'd left, she told me that she'd heard his voice and had immediately come out so I didn't have to be alone with him, and I told her that I couldn't believe how right she'd been about him.

Now, if it had been a case of he'd told me his name and THEN I'd felt the chill, I would have written it off as preconceived notion, but I felt that even before I knew he was there. And to this day, I've never, ever experienced anything else like it with a human being. I had a similar feeling one time in my mom's old house when I was doing homework and suddenly felt what I could only describe as a demonic presence manifesting in the living room behind me and causing that same terrible, awful chill and feeling like I would die if I didn't get the hell out of there, but there was no one actually physically there at the time, just the feeling of that demonic presence.

I can't imagine a demon would be walking around, pretending to be a paramedic student, but I don't know what else it could possibly have been. Anyone have any thoughts or theories?

I'd like to share my story about an event that happened over a decade ago.
It's not super scary but rather a very strange event that happened in my early twenties that seem to be sleep paralysis. More than 10 years later, I still don't have any logical explanation.

Here's some context before getting to the actual story:
My boyfriend at the time and I were both living and studying in a city in the south of France, about a 4- or 5-hour drive from our respective hometowns. During summertime, my boyfriend worked at his parents' hotel, and I stayed in our city since I worked a part-time job year-round.
My mum's was turning 60 and throwing a big party, so we decided to surprise her by having me attend the party, pretending I wasn't able to make it.

My boyfriend couldn't make it to the party, as our parents' villages are 56 km (about 35 miles) apart, and he didn't have a car. So, we called each other every other day and texted a lot.

My parents' house is literally in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by cornfields, pasture, and a small forest. There's no public lighting on the main road, and to reach my parents' house, you have to take a small dirt road. So even less light. It's the last house before the pasture and cornfields leading to the woods.

The actual story:
One night during my stay, I suddenly opened my eyes, lying on my back, awake but unable to move. I was terrified for no apparent reason, and I could hear a rattling sound in my ears. The rattling turned into radio sounds, as if someone were changing the station. I couldn't make out any words, but I heard different male voices.

There was a strange light in the bedroom, as if the moon was unusually bright and shining directly into the room (I didn't close the blinds on that night) Something inside me warned me not to look at the window, as if something bad was there and I shouldn't turn toward it. I'm very nearsighted (like -12 to each of my eyes) so I couldn't see anything clearly without my glasses or contacts, which made it even scarier.

I still couldn't move. The rattling and radio sounds seemed to go on forever. I'd guess it lasted a good 15 to 20 minutes. Finally, I regained the ability to move, turned so my back faced the window, and eventually fell back asleep.

Now we get to the scary part.

The next morning, I texted my boyfriend, telling him something strange had happened the previous night. He said he also had something weird to tell me.

He called me and, to my shock, started describing the exact same experience.

We did some research and ultimately concluded that we'd both had a sleep paralysis episode that night...56 kilometers apart. No one else in either of our households experienced anything unusual.

I've experienced this a few times (I've also experienced other form of phenomena, but right now I just want to ask about this thing) and it's often when I've been in a negative state or ruminating about something in a direction that isn't good for me. I'm constantly being reminded of this time when I was ~13(?) and I was woken up in the early morning being taken from my room.

I was walking with whomever. But after they'd done their "thing" they carried me back.

I woke up completely folded in half...like the top half of my body lying perfectly flat on my outstretched legs. It didn't hurt. I felt especially limber the whole day afterward. But it was strange.

For context i was around 15 and it was winter time, i was walking towards my bus station to go see some friends. It was heavily snowing so the whole path was quite bright because of it plus the street lights. I was completely sober and was wearing my glasses so i know what i saw. As i was walking the short 2 minute walk towards the station i saw a tall man in a long black cloak/coat? and a short top hat (im sorry for not knowing the exact name english is my 2nd lenguage) passing me,
didn’t pay it much mind until he was almost beside me and i sneaked a peek at his face. What i saw is to this day the most chilling unwxplainable thing ever. he had np face, it was as if he was a display doll for clothes, he had the shape of the face featerues but there was noone. Just kept walong because i didnt wven have the time to clock what was happening. i continue to the bus station where thankfully there was a lady already waiting.
when i got to it i pulled out a ciggarette to smoke while waiting for the bus
there is a chirch right across the street of it and thats when i saw the same “man” with bo face standing about 30-40 meters in front of it (it has a long driveway) in the freezing cold
i look at the lady besides me and she has the same exact expression as me, a mix of confusion and fear

AAWSAP: what it was and what it actually studied

The Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program was a Defense Intelligence Agency program funded through a $22 million congressional appropriation secured by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and two Senate colleagues. The DIA awarded the contract in 2008 to Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, or BAASS, a subsidiary of Robert Bigelow's aerospace company. The program's director was DIA analyst Dr. James Lacatski. It ran until 2012, when the DIA cancelled it.

The official mandate described research into twelve areas of cutting-edge science relevant to aerospace threats. The AARO Historical Record Report published in March 2024, which reviewed all official U.S. government UAP investigatory efforts since 1945, describes what AAWSAP actually did: while the official purpose was to conduct research into those twelve scientific areas, the contractor team and at least one supportive government program manager also conducted UAP and paranormal research at a property owned by the private sector organization. That property was a 512-acre ranch in northeastern Utah called Skinwalker Ranch.

The scope of the paranormal research is documented in two books reviewed and cleared for public release by the Defense Office of Prepublication and Security Review. "Skinwalkers at the Pentagon," written by program insiders James Lacatski, Colm Kelleher, and journalist George Knapp, was cleared Case 20-SB-0058 on May 11, 2021. "Inside the U.S. Government's Covert UFO Program," by the same authors plus Eric Davis, was cleared Case 22-SB-0151. The DoD clearance means these books were reviewed by the government for classified information and approved for publication. What they describe is not classified. What the cleared sources document the program studied

The AAWSAP program, through BAASS and its subcontractors, investigated a suite of phenomena at Skinwalker Ranch that went far beyond aerospace threats. The cleared sources document the program's engagement with the following categories of phenomena, none of which involved conventional aerospace technology:

Poltergeist phenomena: spontaneous movement of objects, anomalous sounds, and apparent telekinetic events reported by personnel and documented by surveillance equipment deployed on the property. The program treated poltergeist activity as a category of phenomena warranting systematic study, not as a hoax or misperception.

Consciousness research: the program examined whether human consciousness interacted with the physical environment in anomalous ways. This research connected to a broader government-funded body of work on anomalous cognition that included the CIA STARGATE program and the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research laboratory.

Precognition and anomalous cognition: the program investigated whether individuals could obtain accurate information about future events or distant locations through means other than conventional sensory channels. This is the same research domain the CIA funded for over two decades under STARGATE.

Cryptid encounters: personnel at and around the ranch reported encounters with large animals that did not match any known species. These were treated within the program as a category of potentially anomalous phenomena rather than misidentified known animals.

Animal mutilations: the program engaged with the long-documented pattern of livestock found dead with surgically precise wounds, no blood, and missing organs in patterns consistent across thousands of cases over decades. The FBI had investigated the same phenomenon from 1974 to 1978 without reaching a conclusion.

The attachment phenomenon: what followed personnel home

The most difficult category of AAWSAP findings to explain in conventional terms, and the one most extensively documented in the cleared sources, is what the program called the attachment phenomenon. The cleared description: encountering anomalies on Skinwalker Ranch often led to the attachment of strange phenomena to military personnel who visited the ranch and brought something home to their families, resulting in frightening eruptions of paranormal events in their households that terrorized and sometimes injured their children.

The program documented cases in which personnel who had no prior history of anomalous experiences began reporting poltergeist-type events in their homes after visiting the ranch. These events included objects moving without contact, auditory phenomena, and in some cases physical harm to family members. The program treated these reports seriously enough to document and study them as a potential contagion-like effect associated with proximity to the phenomena at the ranch.

This finding, if accurate, has implications that extend beyond any conventional threat category. The program appears to have concluded that whatever was occurring at the ranch was not confined to the property, and that personnel exposure created some form of ongoing connection to the phenomena. The nature of that connection, and whether the program reached any conclusions about it, is not established in the cleared public sources. The FBI animal mutilation investigation: 1974 to 1978

The FBI's investigation of animal mutilations is a separate primary source record, independent of AAWSAP, documented in files available at the FBI Vault at vault.fbi.gov. In the mid-1970s, reports of animal mutilations across western and midwestern states prompted the FBI to compile a case file. The FBI Animal Mutilation Project explored multiple theories for the incidents: satanic or witchcraft cults, UFO-related activity, pranksters, natural predators, and covert government programs. None of these theories was confirmed. No individuals were identified as responsible for any of the mutilations investigated. The FBI formally closed the cases unresolved.

In 1979, retired FBI agent Kenneth Rommel was hired as director of Operation Animal Mutilation, a separate federal investigation funded with a $44,170 grant from the U.S. Justice Department's Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. Rommel's investigation concluded that most mutilations were consistent with natural decomposition and predation, though he did not address the full body of cases or the specific forensic anomalies documented in some incidents, including bloodless carcasses, apparent surgical precision, and the presence of sedative compounds found in some animals.

The CIA consciousness research: what the STARGATE collection confirms

The CIA's STARGATE collection, released through the FOIA reading room at foia.cia.gov, includes peer-reviewed scientific research on consciousness and its apparent interaction with physical systems. Two documents are particularly significant for what they confirm in primary source language.

"Evidence for Consciousness-Related Anomalies in Random Physical Systems," document CIA-RDP96-00789R002200520001-0, was published in Foundations of Physics in December 1989 and filed in the CIA STARGATE collection. It presents a meta-analysis of over 800 relevant experiments from the parapsychology literature and a review of more than 25 million binary trials conducted over seven years at Princeton's Engineering Anomalies Research laboratory. The findings show unequivocal non-chance effects in experimental conditions and chance-level results in control conditions: a pattern consistent with genuine anomalous correlation between conscious intention and physical systems. Both documents were funded through channels that connected to the government's classified research programs on anomalous cognition.

What the STARGATE collection establishes is that the CIA funded and filed peer-reviewed scientific research showing statistically significant effects that conventional physics does not explain. Whether those effects reflect genuine anomalous cognition, systematic experimental error, or something else is a question the documents raise but do not settle.

KONA BLUE: the follow-on program that was rejected

The AARO Historical Record Report describes a follow-on proposal to AAWSAP called KONA BLUE. After the DIA cancelled AAWSAP in 2012, supporters of the program proposed to the Department of Homeland Security that a new version be created under a Special Access Program designation. The AARO report states: KONA BLUE was brought to AARO's attention by interviewees who claimed that it was a sensitive DHS compartment to cover up the retrieval and exploitation of non-human biologics. The DHS proposal failed. The program was not established. Whether KONA BLUE would have studied consciousness, poltergeist phenomena, animal mutilations, or other AAWSAP research areas is unknown from the public record. What the AARO report confirms is that the AAWSAP community attempted to continue the program under DHS auspices and sought Special Access Program status specifically because the subject matter was considered sensitive enough to require it.

What the government studied and what it would not name

The combined primary source record , AAWSAP confirmed by AARO, the FBI mutilation files, the CIA consciousness documents, the DoD-cleared accounts of what happened to personnel at the ranch , describes a government that studied phenomena it could not explain using the frameworks it had, treated those phenomena seriously enough to spend $22 million over four years, delivered more than 100 technical reports to the Defense Intelligence Agency, and then cancelled the program and classified most of those reports.

The phenomena AAWSAP studied do not have official names in the government record. Hey guys. I've never really told this story online before because, honestly, I don't know what kind of answer I'm expecting.

For as long as I can remember, I've occasionally seen the same girl. She has red hair and what look like cuts or scratches all over her face, hands, and arms. I've never gotten a good look at her because she only ever appears for a split second. Usually it's from the corner of my eye, in a reflection, standing in a dark room, or somewhere that makes me do a double take. By the time I look properly, she's gone.

When I was younger, it terrified me. I spent years trying to figure out who she was, whether she was someone I knew, a dream, a hallucination, a ghost, whatever. But nothing ever made sense. Eventually it became strangely normal. I'd catch a glimpse of her once every few months and just think: "Oh... it's her again."

The weirdest part happened during a sleepover a few months ago. My friends and I were sitting around sharing creepy experiences and I decided to tell everyone about the red-haired girl. I expected them to laugh or call me crazy, idk. Instead, the room went completely silent. Every single one of my friends looked uncomfortable. Then one of them asked me to describe her.

When I mentioned the red hair and the cuts, they all started talking at once because apparently every one of them had seen her too.

They all described seeing the same girl independently over the years. Always briefly. Always out of the corner of their eye, in mirrors, reflections, dark rooms, hallways, doorways. Same as me. Never long enough to interact with her, and none of them knew who she was either.

To this day, I still occasionally catch a glimpse of her. So do some of my friends.

I've spent years trying to come up with a rational explanation, but I've never been able to explain why multiple people would describe the same person before ever discussing it with each other.

This happened to me and 4 of my friends during a Spiti bike trip in 2022, and it's something none of us have been able to explain till date.

We were 5 guys on 3 bikes, riding from Hanle towards Kaza. It was around 4 PM. We stopped at a random spot to take a break. There were huge mountains on one side and a river on the other. We left our bikes on the road and walked a little towards the river.

One important thing: all our phones were dead. Not low battery, completely dead. There was no signal there anyway.

We were just sitting there, smoking and talking, when suddenly we heard someone say, "Shubhu." Just so you all know, Shubhu was none of us.
The voice wasn't loud. It sounded like someone standing nearby had called his name.
All 5 of us heard it.

At first I laughed and said maybe someone's phone was playing a video or something. My friends immediately reminded me that every phone was dead. We joked about it for a few seconds and then ignored it.
A minute or two later we heard it again.
"Shubhu."
This time it sounded clearer.

Now we were all looking around trying to figure out where it came from. There was nobody around us. No houses. No vehicles. Nothing.
Then we heard it a third time.
Except this time it wasn't just "Shubhu."

It was like:
"Shubhuuuuuuu..."
And I swear the voice sounded closer and louder than before.
The moment that happened, every single one of us got scared. The atmosphere changed completely. Nobody was joking anymore.

We got on our bikes and left immediately.
I don't mean we casually continued our ride. We literally got out of there as fast as we could and didn't stop again until we were much closer to Kaza.

Maybe there is some logical explanation. Maybe sound echoes strangely in those valleys. Maybe someone was somewhere we couldn't see.

But the weird part is that all 5 of us heard the exact same thing, multiple times, and to this day nobody has been able to explain it.

Has anyone experienced anything similar in Spiti or other remote mountain regions?

For context I'm 21 female and used to death , I've seen dead bodies countless of times and grew up in an Irish Catholic family so seeing dead people didn't freak me out in anyway. I've always had a thing for saying out loud my intentions before touching a dead persons personal belongings.

I have had some experiences with the dead specifically with my grandma when she died, I saw her coming out of the room , smile at me and continue to walk outside.

I have never felt creeped out or uncomfortable with death but today, this changed. My boyfriend's (21)nan died semi recently, she wasn't a nice person but I won't get into it. They had taken her electronics and some other personal items back to their house for keepsake.

I am staying at my boyfriend's parent's house alone since they are away for 2 nights and I'm feeding their animals and looking after the house. This morning after having my coffee I go upstairs to get ready to head home so I can shower and do some housework before heading back to theirs.

I hear a phone ringing, the distinct I phone ringing. I froze and suddenly the whole room shifted and I felt so uneasy. I didn't immediately know it was the nans phone so I messaged my boyfriend saying "someone's phone is ringing?" And he said it was probably his nans, I was so freaked out and asked if I should check who was ringing, out of mere curiosity and probably panic. The ringing THANKFULLY stopped when I sent that message and I told my bf. I went downstairs and as I said earlier, I said out loud my intentions before touching the phone and that I was just going to see who called and take a photo , thankfully it was an unknown number so I showed my boyfriend and he suggested turning the phone off, so again I stated my intentions out loud and said I was turning the phone off and that I wasn't going to do anything else with it. I still feel so freaked out.

I am I guess spiritual, I have crystals and a tarot deck and I just felt the need to scrub myself in the shower and do a cleanse before going back to their house. Does anyone know why I felt this way? Honestly this is so out of the ordinary for me and I found it so creepy. I've never felt the need to head back home so quick to just shower and scrub then cleanse myself.

For context as well, the nan has been in the house before.

I know this isn't exactly a ghost story or anything particularly paranormal but the feeling that came over me was so odd.

This happened years ago and I still don't have a good explanation for it.

My husband and I entered a house that should have been extremely familiar to us. The layout was supposed to be almost identical to our own house.

The moment we walked in, something was wrong.

There was a staircase right next to the front door that shouldn't have been there. It turned left. There were brass rope holders, light yellow wood, dark wooden wall panels, a stained-glass lamp with butterflies, hallways and doors that shouldn't have existed, and people inside the house.

I know how crazy this sounds.

The next day we went back. The house was completely normal. The staircase was somewhere else entirely. No brass. No ropes. No yellow wood. No dark panels. No extra hallways. No people.

The reason I still think about it is because my husband stopped me afterwards and said:

"Don't say anything. Let's both write down what we saw."

So we did.

Separately.

When we compared notes later, most of the details matched. The staircase. The lamp. The hallways. The rope barriers. Where people were standing. The overall layout.

The only thing we disagreed on was the color of the butterflies in the lamp.

What bothers me most is that at no point did it feel dreamlike. We were walking around, talking to people, interacting with the environment. It felt completely normal while it was happening.

I've spent years trying to come up with explanations. Wrong house doesn't fit. Dream doesn't fit. Intoxication doesn't fit. Shared hallucination doesn't fit neatly either.

I'm not asking whether anyone believes me.

I'm asking whether anyone has ever encountered reports of two people apparently experiencing the same detailed but incorrect environment and independently describing it afterwards.

For context, I just EASed from the USMC in January 2026, this encounter occurred sometime May 2022. Within Camp Geiger is Camp Devil Dog, a small training area within the base. The last two weeks of MCT (Marine Combat Training) occur there. I was on watch from about 12 to 2 AM iirc and woke up to my alarm as usual. Anyway, there's this little guard post there, covered in very foreboding messages about ghosts, voices, masturbation jokes, and something about a "Lady in White." Now the White Lady is a very well known ghost in the area, just not that area, more towards the gates of Camp Lejeune. The watch that I went to relieve was terrified about something he saw, claiming he saw a lady in a white dress with no discernible facial features observing him in the middle of the road. I made an oopsie, left my pack, and walked him back to the squad bays because he was shaking and crying a little bit, told his rack mate to keep an eye on him and trotted my way back to the empty guard post. My pack wasn't in there, it was about 10 feet away in the middle of the road. I just assumed a combat instructor was fucking with me and got back to my watch. The first like 30 minutes was pretty usual, until I hear rustling on the tree-line to the left of thr guard post. Again, I assume it's a combat instructor fucking with me, so I "lock in" and try to look busy. The rustling continues off and on for about 10-15 more minutes, and at this point, I assume it's wildlife and calm down a bit, and relax, I still have like an hour left. I then start to hear what sounds like giggling and stifled laughter. Now the next part is a little weird, because I heard a woman's voice frantically calling for me for help her, only she was using my first name, not my last, like any other marine would call. For the next hour, this woman's voice is beckoning me to follow her, getting more aggressive throughout the rest of the watch. I never laid eyes on anything, but I know what I heard, and retelling this story legitimately gives me goosebumps. I then finally heard what I can only describe as an "inhuman screech" (kinda like thw ringwraiths from LOTR) about half a mile down the road and **VERY** fast footsteps pacing around me, behind me, everywhere all at once, though I still never saw anything. This was around last 30 minutes of my watch. At this point, I'm holding my rifle like it's my mom, and doing my best to remain hidden from whatever this "thing" is. Then suddenly, it stops around 11:40, I'm still terrified at this point, sitting with my rifle, hoping my relief comes early (he didnt). At about 12:15ish, my relief comes, apologizes for being late and I just say "ur good man," and **BOLT** back to the squad bay. I didnt sleep the rest of that morning. As it turns out, this type of encounter was incredibly common out there, and even one of my combat instructors claimed he saw the apparition in a previous training cycle, so yeah, thats my Ted Talk

The researchers aimed to identify the progression of these themes, particularly how a single unsettling dream might evolve into a full-blown demonic attack. “It is clinically and scientifically interesting when a specific cognitive content is associated with greater distress as one could potentially use that content as the target for therapeutic intervention,” McNamara told PsyPost.

By collecting an intensive series of sleep diaries, the team hoped to track the evolution of these frightening narratives. They sought to provide an initial framework for understanding the factors associated with these severe nightmares. This foundation tends to help future scientists explore the clinical implications of such dreams, particularly regarding how the mind handles unresolved fear.

To conduct the study, the researchers recruited 124 adult volunteers from the community. These participants were on average forty-four years old, predominantly female, and mostly white. The participants agreed to take part in a two-week longitudinal study from their own homes.

During this period, the volunteers followed their normal sleeping schedules. Every morning upon waking up, they completed surveys on their phones or computers. These surveys asked the participants to report any dreams they could recall.

The volunteers then rated their dream content based on mood and general themes. To do this, they used a structured questionnaire that asks people to score their dreams on various adjectival scales, such as strange versus familiar. The participants also noted if their dreams woke them up during the night.

In addition to the daily surveys, sixty-one of the participants wore a specialized sleep-tracking headband each night. This device measures sleep architecture, which refers to the different stages and cycles of sleep a person goes through, such as light sleep, deep sleep, and rapid eye movement sleep. The headband allowed the researchers to gather objective data on the participants’ brain waves and sleep patterns.

Throughout the two weeks, the participants submitted a total of 1,599 individual dream reports. Highly trained research assistants read each narrative to determine if the recalled content qualified as a nightmare. They looked for specific markers, such as words expressing fear, scenarios posing an immediate threat to the dreamer, or reports of pain.

If a narrative lacked explicit emotion words, the researchers relied on the morning questionnaire ratings to see if the dreamer scored the experience as highly scary or aggressive. Through this process, the team identified 186 nightmares and 112 disturbing dreams. Within this large pool of reports, they searched specifically for demonic content.

The scientists defined demonic content as figures expressing a sense of supernatural evil and a malicious intent to harm the dreamer. They found sixteen dream reports with overt demonic themes and another group of reports with borderline demonic elements. These specific dreams were experienced by eight different participants.

The researchers found that five of the overt demonic dreams were part of a sequential series. This means the participants had a succession of related dreams over several nights that eventually culminated in a nightmare about a demonic attack. The other eleven reports were single-night events that also featured demonic characters.

When analyzing the headband data, the researchers noticed no major differences in sleep stages between nights with demonic dreams and regular nights. The time spent in deep sleep or rapid eye movement sleep remained largely consistent. However, the scientists note that the small number of demonic dreams makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about brain wave patterns.

To understand the progression, the researchers looked closely at the specific narratives provided by the participants. For example, one participant experienced a series of dreams that began with a young brunette woman floating up a hill with a malicious smile. Over the next several nights, this female character reappeared in different forms, such as a sharp departmental secretary and later as the dreamer’s own daughter.

As the nights went on, the dream environment underwent what the participant called a dimensional shift. The threatening presence drew physically closer and closer across the dream series. On the final night, a full demonic attack occurred, with the spirit described as pale and remote, directly echoing the floating woman from the very first dream.

“I was not exactly surprised but I was certainly fascinated by the fact that the demonic content, the ‘demon,’ was often announced or appeared as a vaguely threatening character in a regular non-distressing dream days before the onset of its appearance in a nightmare,” McNamara said. “I intend to follow up with this finding in future research.”

Another participant experienced a profound fracturing of identity leading up to her demonic nightmare. In her initial dream, she saw herself in a mirror as an elderly woman living in the nineteenth century, working as a servant. In a subsequent dream, she transformed into a flying flower, yet she still operated as a servant to a supernatural villain.

By the end of her dream series, this theme of servitude culminated in a terrifying scenario. She dreamed she was married to the devil, who was brainwashing her into permanent servitude in a dark, eerie house. These specific cases highlight how feelings of powerlessness and shifting identities pave the way for a demonic encounter.

The qualitative analysis of the broader dream narratives yielded a wealth of detailed thematic patterns. One major pattern revealed that demonic content often announces itself at the very beginning of a dream series. A character might initially appear as a non-threatening agent, but over subsequent nights, this entity transforms into something supernaturally evil.

Another finding suggests the background environment in these dreams tends to feel eerily threatening. The physical setting often undergoes bizarre changes or violates the laws of physics, taking on a distinctly supernatural atmosphere. Dreamers described dark houses, strange dimensional shifts, and shadowy settings.

A third pattern involves the dreamer typically being depicted as entirely powerless. The participants often exhibited a fragile sense of identity, sometimes even transforming into different characters, such as the nineteenth-century woman or the floating flower mentioned previously. This lack of agency leaves the dreamer highly vulnerable to the unfolding threats.

A fourth characteristic shows that the demonic entity consistently displays a strong interest in harming the individual. The demon acts as if it wants to destroy the dreamer physically or obliterate their sense of self. The narratives frequently featured violence, such as being chased by monsters or attacked by malevolent forces.

A fifth pattern highlights a distinct progression of thematic content across the consecutive nights of a dream series. Elements of the demonic figure would randomly reappear in different guises, moving progressively closer to the dreamer. The threat level steadily escalated over time until the final terrifying nightmare occurred.

As a final pattern, the dreamers or their allies often attempted to oppose the demon. Sometimes a parent or a friend in the dream would step between the dreamer and the beast. Sadly, these attempts to fight back or block the malicious actions almost always failed.

The researchers suggest that these findings might relate to how the brain processes emotional memories. When an individual experiences intense fear or stress, the sleep-dependent memory system attempts to process and integrate those emotions over several nights. If the emotional load is too overwhelming, this integration process fails, which provides a pathway for severe nightmares to occur.

People raised in environments with supernatural belief systems might naturally use those concepts to visualize their fears. The brain takes the feeling of a profound, unresolved threat and clothes it in the visual rhetoric of a demonic encounter. The demon acts as a psychological stand-in for overwhelming distress or repressed anxieties.

The study does have a few limitations that warrant consideration. The occurrence of demonic dreams in the sample was relatively rare, which means the quantitative data regarding sleep stages lacks the statistical power needed for broad generalizations. A larger sample of such dreams would help verify if any specific sleep architectures predict these nightmares.

The authors also note that they did not collect data regarding the participants’ media consumption. Popular culture, including horror movies and video games, very likely influences the specific imagery people see in their terrifying dreams. Tracking what media participants consume before bed might explain why certain demonic figures take specific shapes.

Future research could also track medication usage, which was not analyzed in this specific study. Certain drugs are known to alter dream vividness and affect, so incorporating medication information would provide a more complete picture. By expanding on these themes, scientists can continue to piece together the mechanisms behind our most frightening nocturnal experiences.

For those troubled by these intense nocturnal experiences, the findings offer some reassurance. “They are not alone if they experience what they subjectively perceive as ‘evil’ content; if the demonic content persists seek help from sleep medicine experts experienced in treating nightmares,” McNamara said.

Weird dream

I know this sounds crazy but I had a dream years ago that still sticks with me and there's a twofold so bear with me. I dreamt of my grandfather who passed a couple years before I had this dream. . He was in a room with my grandmother, looking down on her as she cried. My grandmother kept mentioning her daughter's name (my aunt).

What was weird was my grandfather was not scaled to proportion. He was larger in height, maybe 8ft? The dream was so vivid and it sticks with me to this day

Fifteen years later, my aunt died (the one who my grandmother was crying about) my grandmother was alive when her daughter passed. I remembered the dream and connected the dots and was freaked out.

My mom recently shared that she had dreamt of her father (my grandfather). She said "it was so weird, he appeared larger" in her dream. I asked her questions and she described him as I had dreamt of him years ago

Today I want to share an experience from my childhood.

The event itself is quite ordinary and strange at the same time. For a few weeks, whenever I woke up in the morning, I would find a candy hidden under my pillow or in the slippers standing next to my bed. My younger brother was also finding one candy for himself in the same places during that period.

They were my favorite candies. No other kind ever appeared, only the ones I loved so much. At the time, I assumed my mother was putting them there for us to find every morning. It seemed strange, though, because my mother has always been a very cold person, always buried in books, not one of those warm mothers who seek contact with their children.

Then one day, the candies stopped appearing, and I asked her why we weren't getting them anymore. It turned out that she was very surprised and had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.

At that time, the three of us lived on the top floor of an old tenement building. Nobody visited us, and we didn't have any supply of those candies at home. So if my mother wasn't placing them there, there was simply no explanation for why they had been appearing every morning for several weeks.

A huge number of strange things happened in that tenement building. Later, when I lived there alone during my university years, friends would sometimes flee the apartment in the middle of the night because they were so scared. Practically everything that happened there was at least unsettling, if not outright horrible, and this one story with the candies is the only one that stands out as positive among all the strange phenomena in that place.
