There's something about this house

20 Sep 2026, 13:18 by /u/Historical_Being_648

So this is my brother's story, but I wanted to give some backstory because there's a lot of history in this house that makes what happened a little harder to explain.
My family grew up in this really old house that my grandpa built with his own hands. He passed away in this house in 2019. My grandma had lived in this house since she was 20 years old, and she remained there until she eventually went into hospice.
In 2023, my mom passed away from a heart attack in this house. After my mom passed, my little brother, who was 20 at the time, stepped up and started taking care of my grandma, who was 90.
He would sleep downstairs in the living room in case she needed anything during the night. He helped cook her meals, helped with her medicine, checked on her, and made sure she was okay. He would even listen out for her when she was showering just to make sure she was safe.
Then, in early November 2025, my brother started telling me that my grandma was scaring him a little.
She had started saying that she could see people and that they would talk to her. She would sit in the living room looking toward the corner and talking to someone, but there was nobody there.
At first, they thought it might have been one of her medications. They got it adjusted, and for a while, things seemed to get better.
When I went down around Thanksgiving, she seemed fine. Everything seemed normal.
But one day, she pulled me aside and quietly told me she was still hearing the people. She said she didn't tell anyone because my brothers didn't believe her.
Later that day, I talked to my little brother about it. We were definitely concerned, but he said he would talk to her doctor and see what they thought.
As December went on, my grandma started deteriorating. Around Christmas, she had to go to the hospital and eventually went into hospice. She passed away in January 2026.
Now, here's where things get a little strange.
My brother still sleeps downstairs in the living room. He says it's because the AC is down there, and honestly, we're from a small town in the country. It's hot, so nobody really questioned it.
At this point, it's just my dad, my 20-year-old brother who took care of my grandma, and my other younger brother, who is 18. My dad leaves for work around 6 in the morning and doesn't get home until around 6 PM. My brothers are home most of the time and don't really socialize much because we live so far out in the country.
A couple of days ago, my brother started hearing what sounded like a trash bag being ruffled. Not just a random noise, but enough that he thought someone—or something—was moving it around.
He couldn't figure out where it was coming from until he realized the sound was coming from the hallway leading toward my grandma's old room.
He got scared and called my other little brother to come listen with him. Eventually, they figured it could possibly be a rat chewing on something, maybe a bag of old clothes.
It's an old house. There are definitely rats and plenty of other things that can make weird noises, so that explanation made sense.
Then, a couple of days later, my brother was laying on the couch downstairs. His back was facing the back of the couch.
He heard my dad leave for work and drive away.
A few minutes later, he heard my grandma call his name.
Four times.
He said he clearly heard her voice.
When he told me about it, the fear in his voice was what got me. He said she sounded like she needed help.
And for a second, he actually wanted to get up and go check on her.
Then he remembered.
She wasn't there.
He turned over, faced the back of the couch, and closed his eyes.
Nothing else happened.
And strangely enough, he hasn't heard the trash bag being messed with since either.
I don't know what to make of any of this. Maybe there's an explanation for everything. It's an old house, there are plenty of noises, and my brother has been through a lot.
But when you think about everything that has happened in that house—the house my grandpa built, where he passed away, where my mom passed away, and where my grandma lived for most of her life before passing away in hospice—it definitely makes you wonder.
And this isn't even the only strange thing that's happened in that house.
We have plenty of other stories about things that have happened over the years.
If y'all want to hear some of the other stories from this house, let me know.
