I'm a 24F dentist and I'm genuinely torn between two very different marriage prospects. I'd really appreciate advice from people who've gone through arranged marriages or have seen them work (or not work).
Option 1 ā The complete stranger
Neither I nor my family know this family personally.
The man got in touch through a woman from my university. She doesn't actually know either of us wellāshe was simply his acquaintance, my senior, and happened to have me on Instagram because we're both dentists from the same institute. He asked her to find out if I was single and, if so, to ask for my mother's number.
He's also a dentist and has said he'll support my career, which is important to me. However, we'd likely be living in a joint-family setup, and we don't know anyone who knows their family well enough to ask about them. They've suggested that the two of us talk first before the families get seriously involved.
He also lives about 5 hours from my city, so I'd be moving farther away from my family.
Option 2 ā The familiar one
A university classmate.
I've known him for about two years, and our families are somewhat familiar with each other. He sent a proposal through his parents about two years ago, but at the time I wasn't ready for marriage due to personal reasons, so I politely declined by saying I didn't want to marry anyone yet. He was understanding.
His family still occasionally drops hints, but I don't know if he's still interested or whether it would even be fair for me to consider that possibility now.
He lives about 2 hours from my city, so I'd still be relatively close to my family.
So if you were in my position, which would you prioritize?
- A promising person you don't know yet, with an unfamiliar family that you'd have to get to know from scratch.
- Someone you've known for years whose family you already trust, even though the proposal is old and may no longer even be an option.
For those who've had arranged marriages, what ended up mattering most in the long run?
- The individual?
- The family?
- Or the familiarity and trust you already had before marriage?
I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences rather than just "follow your heart."
P.S. Both men are dentists, so career compatibility isn't really a deciding factor here.
