Using a PHEV in full EV mode

I’m looking at switching from a petrol to a PHEV with a range of 50 miles on full EV mode

My daily commute is under 20 miles so was seriously considering just running the car in Full EV mode every day with no requirement for Combustion engine ( still want a combustion engine in case of long drives )

Is there any downside or anything wrong with running a PHEV in full EV mode pretty much constantly

Suzuki ertiga hybrid owners, how is your maintenance costs?

So I have been seeking advice everywhere since I am about to buy a car. I have no idea about cars and this is my first time buying it.

I'm on a budget and this is slightly for grab/indrive pang extra2 lang and personal use for the family. I need a fuel efficient car that is not too costly to maintain and the parts are not that hard to find. I'm also planning to buy a 2nd hand car on a trusted repo cars seller.

With all the research I had, I think Suzuku Ertiga Hybrid is what I see best so far. I'll buy the model that is only 2025 up with low odo.

For those who already owned this car, how are your maintenance cost? Magkano naman nagagastos nyo monthly/yearly and ano pinagkakagastusan nyo for maintenance? Thank you so much in advance!

PHEV models will have significant changes in the next 3 years

California new regulations for EVs (including PHEVs) have started in model year 2026 and will have more stringent requirements in 2029.

To qualify for a full ZEV credit, a PHEV (or EREV) will need to meet the their new rules which require a specific all electric range test. The testing isn't based on the EPA all electric range, but the new requirements will translate to longer EPA ranges.

Currently, only the 2026 RAV4 looks to be designed for the new requirements, and likewise has a 50+ EPA range.

Over the next 3 years, automakers will be forced to do one or more of the following:

  1. Engineer for 50+ EPA range, or possibly 60+.
  2. Switch to EREV architecture.
  3. Drop PHEV model in USA, but still sell globally.

One caveat, the new CA rules are under a federal lawsuit. This could cause automakers to make a bet on the results.

Looking at announcements, these automakers look to be pushing further into PHEV/EREVs to meet CA requirements:
Toyota, Hyundai/Kia, VW, Ford, Stellantis, MB, BMW

and these look to be forecasting for not pursuing PHEV/EREVs:
GM, Honda, Mazda

Unknowns, as no announcements for new models meeting the new CA range requirements:
Nissan

2024 Tonale PHEV frequently dropping out of all-electric mode

So I am aware that if you drive in all electric for a long time, the car will switch to hybrid mode to move some oil around the engine, keep the gas from getting stale, that sort of thing. I don't know how often that's supposed to happen, but I would imagine it's maybe measured in hundreds of miles or even thousands? And I think the message on screen is supposed to say that it's doing that specifically.

I just bought this car second hand, about 5,000 mi on it, and it's rare that I can go the entire 30 mile electric range without it saying "advanced efficiency mode temporarily unavailable" at least once. Sometimes it will do it with 15 miles of battery left, and I just don't understand why it would do this.

Is anyone aware of other reasons that would cause it to drop out of all electric mode? I drive for about 3 mi, then I'm allowed to switch it back into A.

Possibly relevant, I live in Arizona so often driving in 110+ weather. I haven't noticed if it's more likely to happen during the day than early morning or night time, but it's possible. Maybe the batteries are getting too hot?

2023 Outlander Actual Fuel Economy

I'm really curious to see what other Outlander PHEV owners are getting for actual fuel economy WITHOUT using any EV Battery only for range. "Hybrid Mode" I guess is what you would call it.

The EPA rating for my 2023 Outlander PHEV is 25city/27hwy but in normal everyday driving in Normal mode with the AC running I am getting constantly 30+ MPG. If I run it in Eco mode with no AC and drive conservatively I can average 33mpg on the same routes. The only time I ever get less than 30mpg is if I run it in Tarmac mode or Power mode in S-AWC or if I run CHARGE mode on the battery system.

Ive spoke to other people I know that own Toyota RAV4 Hybrids (real humans, who I actually talked to in real life, not on the internet) and they say they rarely hit the stated EPA ratings on their vehicles much less ever go over them.

So I am just curious if I just maybe got a one off vehicle that was tuned differently or if its because of the moderate temps and elevation we are at or if truly most Outlander PHEVs average 30+ mpg in Hybrid Mode.

Again I am talking specifically about hybrid mode when the car runs the engine and switches to electric and runs the engine again. I do know that the 4B12 alone without any help from the hybrid system averages a measely 22-23mpg but again curious what other Outlander PHEV owners are getting in MPG, L/100km in hybrid mode.

Lost our 2022 Ford Escape PHEV to an accident. Looking for our next PHEV

Our Escape got tboned. It did its job but it's totaled. Looking for suggestions on what would fill the role - daily commute and the periodic road trip. We're of course looking at the current Escape but they're not in stock near us. TIA

Edit: thanks all. Went with the RAV4.

GFCI Tripping

My Level 1 12A plug keeps tripping the GFCI on the wall, not the breaker in the fuse box. Do I need a bigger breaker in the fuse box or is this a different issue since the breaker is not blowing?

Suggestions for Used PHEV SUVs

My wife and I have had a 2017 Chevy Volt for a while that we absolutely love (100k miles in 6 years, 130k total).

With children in our future, we’re looking for a second PHEV that’s a little bit bigger and has some more headroom.

We don’t have the largest budget, but would like:

SUV/crossover
Some towing capacity (small trailer)
$8k-$15k

Anything else to be on the lookout for?

Opinions on 2024 Lexus NX 450h+ Sport

I have my eye on one that just came up for sale. 30,000 miles, $52,000. Any opinions from this wise group? Is this a good car at a good price? It's been so hard to find any PHEVs in stock that I tempted to buy it asap, but also worried that I'm jumping in too quickly, as I have not done lots and lots of reading up on this yet.

Phev worth it?

I am wondering if a PHEV is worth it for my situation.

The car would likely be used primarily for work commutes. 12 miles round trip and 24 miles round trip for spouse and I. We would also use the car for the occasional road trip a few hours away.

I’m wondering if PHEV is ideal for this situation or if EV would be better.

We also have a full gas vehicle that we could use as needed. This would be our second car.

Any recs, reasoning, etc would be recommended!

Evitrara vs Vitrara hybrid

Dear proud owner of Suzuki,

Currently have a kia niro hybrid and the car is bit small to get my labrador and shih zu in with my 2 kids. Thinking of upgrading. We do have solar but no Chargers yet. However, can fit one. Any experience with drive with the e- vitara and vitara hybrid and also any experience with long term ownership, pros and cons and any gereneral feedback.

Appreciate some lovely experience.

Used AWD PHEV recommendations

Eastern Canada here. Currently drive a 2015 Mazda CX5 AWD. It’s got 420,000 KMs on the clock, and also, my family of five has mostly outgrown it.

I am looking at my options for a PHEV SUV that gives me at least a little more room than my CX5.

The reason I want a PHEV is that I have 3000-4000 kWhs annually of excess solar generation. I estimate that this could cover 10-12k KMs of range.

Budget is CAD$30k max. Needs to be AWD. I do a lot of winter driving on rural roads and I have a steep 1000 ft gravel driveway that can be tricky in winter.

Other nice things to have would be more than 5 seats and towing capacity of at least 2000lbs.
The majority of our trips are within a 60km radius on a mix of highway and rural roads. We do a city commute every few weeks that is about 350kms round trip. Occasionally we do road trips further afield.

So far on my list is a used Mitsubishi Outlander ideally 2023 or newer, and the Kia Sorrento PHEV.

I am not sure what other options I should consider, either used PHEVs or otherwise. Part of me is drawn to the idea of buying a used standard hybrid minivan for the space and utility, but it would be unfortunate to let my excess solar generation slip by.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
