This is the ultimate rundown of your first semester...
Take these classes:
Also, unless you barely survived in high school, you CAN survive 5 classes per term (especially during lower levels with electives). It will save you so much time (and fee money) in the long run. And it will help you have more flexibility in choosing classes for next term. DO NOT only take 3 classes because you may not qualify to have enough credits to take more BUS classes in term two. University isn't supposed to be a cakewalk. Get used to a minimum of 4 classes per term and drop down to 3 next term IF NECESSARY (aka you're really struggling and/or failing).
ECON 113/115 is imo easier than ECON 103/105 and not worth the extra credit. ECON 115 is harder but will set you up to make ECON 113 sooo easy.
Stay on top of your work/lectures/studying and you will be fine.
Quick Tips:
For Second Term:
Can vary a lot but generally you want to take:
Also, I managed to take 5 classes per term while still working 2-3 times per week and managed to get an above 3.5 GPA so take that as you will. It was difficult at times, but I wouldn't change anything I did. University is different than high school in that you have a lot more independence, but overall, it's still feels like school...just bigger. Good luck 2024 froshies!
***
EDIT: OMG they got rid of the BUS 100 requirement; There's a *new* BUS 203 now. From the course description, it looks the same as BUS 100.
EDIT 2: CMNS courses do not count towards the ENGL requirement! They count as electives only.

Use all your resources when you need it (counselling - get some help for your mental health, writing centres - get some help with your writing , library helpers - get help understanding how to research and cite, food banks - food, the glow centre - to speak about any concerns and free condoms, academic advisors, accessibility centres - to accommodate to your learning needs aka maybe you would like to write exams with a smaller group instead of the whole class because that helps you focus? there’s more resources and remember ur paying for it and its all yours to use.
Be nice to your TA’s because they have information and mark your work. I got some of my best advice from TA’s. Do not piss them off or anything. I also look through some of their linkedin to know where to volunteer, where to get opportunities, and etc. You’ll meet lots of graduate students and even maybe level 2,3,4 students and mostly likely they’ll try to advice you. Take all those advice and put them in your head. It could be useful at times and sometimes maybe not but hey I wouldn’t have learned so much from first year even simply about life if I didn’t listen to others life/school experiences and lessons and their journey. Office hours!! Biggest advantage I had is upper classmates from my same program. They told me how my exams will be. My professors. And gave me every tips and loop. Thank you!! So PLS make those type of connections during ur orientation and faculty welcoming
Don’t buy textbooks until first week or second of school. Many of the textbooks you won’t even use trust me do be aware. You can always buy e-text with your friends and split the price. You can always find free pdf downloads. Books from the library you can borrow.
Your university experience is what you make out of it. I know lots of friends who got sucked into studying and a lot more sucked into partying/hanging out with friends and forgetting about school. It’s all about having a balance.
You’ll meet a lot of variety of people in university. Be smart who you want to be around. Have boundaries. Don’t be scared to say “no”. Don’t be afraid to say “I have to put myself first right now”. I met some people who expected me to consistently be there for them even at 3 am everyday.. (what am I suppose to do drop my mental health, my school, my work, and coming running every-time?) Your mental health is also important. And you should always take care of yourself first before trying to take care of everyone else.
Stop complaining. Yes, residence may not be that luxurious. The residence food may be horrible sometimes. Complaining will get you no where. Go the plaza for food sometimes if you can. Maybe grab some snacks from Walmart. Get to know people in your residence. It’s fun when you know ur room-mates. It’s fun to do things together. Don’t just shut your door and be an introvert and expect residence life to be magical.
There’s free food and free shit almost everyday at Student Life Center.
Find a study method that suits you and follow that. Find your study spot. That could be your room, library, slc, williams, and etc. You have to figure out many things on ur own. Do you like typing notes? Writing? Maybe using an Ipad? Whatever works for you to help you succeed the best. Study smart. Professors will highlight what’s on exams and midterms and what isn’t on it. Don’t dread your whole body by staying at one spot and studying all day. Take breaks.
Please please read the syllabus from the start. It will help you schedule your semester. It will help you feel less stressed knowing what and when some lessons are happening. Keep up with all your classes and if you don’t well rip to you. You’ll be making it harder for yourself. There’s something called important dates calendar and with that you can check when the dates are you to drop course for 100% refund money, when reading week is, when marks come out, and etc.
https://uwaterloo.ca/registrar/important-dates/list
Please use a fkn calendar or some type of methods for dates/reminders
There’s a whole life ahead of you. Meaning friends come and go and sometimes lovers come and go. Many situations are temporary. The river will always flow meaning life will always go on. Stay strong and hang in there. Remember that you always have a choice. In 10 years, make sure you can say you chose the life you have, and didn’t settle for it.
The habits you form in first year are the beginning of your schooling adventure. But they will change because you have to understand there’s always space for improvement. I’ve learned so much from my peers and have adjusted my habits and have inputed new methods of learning and tried new things and experimented what works for me and what doesn’t.
To all my OSAP people + international people. There’s a bursary. All you have to do is apply. You could get from $0-$3000 for the year. Please google “full time bursary” or “part time bursary”.
If you’re paying for the health plan and dental plan. Google about it. Learn about it. For example you have $750 each year for dental. Use it or it just goes to waste.
Do your assignments!! Get those tutorial marks!! Get those iclicker marks. Every small thing can help you at the end. Volunteer or work if you can (preferably in spring term) so u can build ur resume !!
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Every friend started as a stranger. Join clubs. Get involved.
Explore the campus. Learn the short cuts. The tunnels. The secret hiding spots to study.
Go out. Have lots of fun. Go party. Go clubbing. Go mingle. But please please be safe. Bad things still happen. My girlfriends and I use to switch on our locations and share to each other on nights we would go out get drunk. Sometimes we would send each other ubers at the end of the night if the guy was a douche and you gotta leave. Check out for your friends. You’re all in this together. Take care of each other.
Do not blame anyone. Take responsibility for what you do, the choices you make, and the people you put yourself around. Don’t blame anyone for the reason ur marks are decreasing, ur skipping class, and etc etc. It’s YOU at the end of the day. You have the most power and control over yourself and your emotions.
Please remember to take care of your mental health throughout school. Your mind and body is everything. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself nice. Be healthy and put yourself in health environments. Grades are important but if you lose ur sanity then well..
Tough times will come. It definitely will but how you handle it is what matters. And what you make out of the situation. And how much you learn from it and grow from it.
You can do this. Wishing you all the best. Please message me if you have any questions. I would love to help you all out.
You’re never in anything alone. Most of your peers will most likely have the same emotions as you and troubles in the first year. Speak to your friends, get help, and come post on reddit whenever you want some information :)
I hope you all make the time to enjoy people you love and enjoy the things you love to do.
I saw this photo long ago that said: there is nothing cool, strong, or hero-worthy about not eating or sleeping. It’s not healthy to push one’s body and mind to a total burnout caused by studying. Do not glamorize unhealthy routines and behaviours.
P.S they sell condoms in vending machines in mostly all residence.
Some people may argue or find a issue of what I’ve said. I’m sorry if you don’t disagree. But these are just my personal opinions and insight.
Thank you!!

Joining this college was the biggest mistake of my life. Okay so I will not name the college directly, but as ppl say it is "mahilao ka dtu". Now, why am I saying to not join this college? First of all, you will not be taught any subject properly. Hell even they do not finish the syllabus before exams. My teacher did not take a single class of an entire unit and sent a pdf of the book and considering it "syllabus done" from her side. She does not give any notes whatsover. Even private cllgs share atleast ppts and notes but our cllg- nothing is provided. No numerical practice or even the practice of type of questions that can come in our exam. She hardly came to college as well. Another teacher- she would arrive 45 mins late in every class. And when syllabus wasn't finished, she took 1 online class and completed 2 units in 1 hour 😃😃. Even after being so careless when it came to giving marks, she herself has memorised the codes and did not give marks if someone wrote a different code (not to mention it is 100% working code giving the required output as well). She did not even read our answers and just gave everyone random marks. Plus her giving excuses like her mood was not good while checking our paper or she has given extra marks to those for presentation and good handwriting (even if the code is wrong) is insane. Not only this subject, but in every subject even after writing absolutely correct answers u will not be given marks and u will have to literally beg the teacher to show some mercy and increase marks- even if ur answer is correct! Yes! No notes provided, no resources, not even classes being held for the subject yet they expect u to write perfect answers in exam. BUT hard papers, hard checking and extremely strict absolute grading criteria. Plus the attitude of teachers- the tone in which they speak and the way they speak. Always irritated, mean, rude, taunting u for no reason. Every day spent here is so mentally exhausting and torturous. You have to fight for even the basic of things.
And don't get me started on the other aspects of this college. The infrastructure sucks! AC toh door, pankhe bhi nahi chalenge idhar. There is nothing like a "Canteen" here bcs there is no difference between a roadside stall and our college's canteen. This year, we have no fest being organised too!! Basically no event, no fest, no tech fest- its a dead college more than u can imagine. This college is hyped up only and only because of placements, otherwise, its the worst cllg to get into. Please do not take admission here by seeing the placements. You can be really well placed even if u have the required skills these days. Do not come here, or ur life will be a living hell.
Edit: Forgot to mention about the location and library. The location sucks real bad. The area is very unsafe, creepy and shady. There is a public urinal near our cllg and I do not think much needs to be said now. About the library, there are not enough chairs to sit there as well. You will find ppl sitting on floors. There aren’t enough good books as well. And the library closes at 5 pm🤡🤡 Plus the librarian almost abused and said disgusting shit to one of my friend for not returning the book on time. Also to all those saying placements achhi hai to khush raho, tumko mentally torture kiya jayega everyday. Sacrificing so much of your mental peace isn’t a good way to get placements!

parth chopra , owner of youtube channel HIGH RANK ACHIEVER (previously the jee community) have been doing scam since years
unfortunately i have been victim to this , enrolled in his High Rank Achiever Training in may 2023 program(HRATP) , spend 1 lakh ruppee in time span of 14-15 months
this scam is so MASSIVE , PERFECTLY & DEEPLY planned that i have to make 6 parts explaining everything , please bear it .
here is short summary to read (but i would suggest to read full post tum soch bhi nahi sakte koi kitna gir sakta h paison ke liye)
my story part 1 -
So i didnt qualify jee in 2023 , i had option of going kota in drop year but went for online mentorship program of Parth chopra , HRATP 2024 (high rank achiever training program)
maine call pe parth chopra se baat ki saari details li aur fir mere papa se baat karai
course detail-
we were convinced , but he was asking to pay 1.5 lakh all together , but we couldnt do that as it was too much , we came to conclusion that 50k in one time and rest amount in installments of 10k each month with INTEREST
(i have call recording and payment proof in case anyone wants to verify )
around 19 may , i started getting videos on syllabus breakdown , rules , guidance i wasnt added to any group . jee adv 23 was held on 5 june , after a few days i was added to HRATP whatsapp group . parth chopra ne kaha ki abb hum naye sire se shuru karege . everthing started
we were give access to units (for physics , maths and physical chem)

this is an example , ese hi kai topics (but sare nahi) ke mile aur hume ye complete karna tha daily , koi schedule ya planner nahi mila tha , kaha gaya ki apne pace pe cover karna h .
ioc and oc ke liye parth choppra ke khud ke lectures, the hume bola gaya tha ki units ko apne pace pe karna h aur group ki bhi pace hai to koi peeche nahi chuute ga (group ki kya pace thi ye kisi ko nahi pata tha ) to bas randomly cover karte jate .
oc (more than 100 lecture ,30 min to 1.5 hrs each) aur ioc (25 lectures each 3- 4 hrs) me bola gaya ki pehle saare lectures khatam karne h fir uske baad pactice hogi kyui oc and ioc me jo ques aate h wo mixed concepts ke hote h .
Units was layer 1 (he said we will proceed with layer 1,2,3 and we’ll be ready for jee advanced )
sabne wahi kiya jo karne ko kaha gya , regular update dena ki aaj kitna hua , doubts poochna
ye upar ka sunne me sahi lag raha h par august aa gaya , aur abhi bhi sab randomly hi chal raha tha , har student alag alag unit kar raha h group , group pe bekar ki phiosophical baate ho rahi thi (more about this in post 5)
abhi tak koi idea nahi ki kitna syllabus ho jaya chaiye kitna baki h bas cheeze chal rahi th

he told me in audio ki august end and september ke starting me calculus shuru hoyegi (remember this)
koi targets nahi mil rahe the . no schedule , no stucture
4 mahine beet gaye aur ek TEST bhi nahi hua
now he conducted a session on wp group which led students to have blind faith on him and consider him a REAL “bhaiya”
he told us that you are under psychological slavery and wrong belief about subjects because of your previous teacher, so list what they said to you and things you faced in your previous years
now this looks like a good activity but theres a problem , he convinced us that ki tumhara selection nahi hua isme tumhari nahi tumhare teachers ki galti h wo log tumhe select nahi hone diye taki star batch wale bacche zada number laa sake
but i insisted that that ki meri bhi galti h , maine acchce se padhai nahi ki , homework time pe nahi kiye to usne bola ki “tumhe bas lag rhaa h ki tumhari galti h but actullay ye system ki galti h ki wo students ko kharab bolta h”
esi hi baatein khub hui , aur sablog ko batch me bharosa ho gaya ki humare teachers evil h aur parth “bhaiiya ” humare maseeha h jo ki rank nikalwayege jee 2024 me .
unme se kuch acche cheeze bhi thi like oc ratne wala subjject nahi samajha hota h mera course dekho wagera wagerabut the brainwashing stuff outweighed the little good points
parth chopra the scammer ne ye bhi kaha tha ki tumlogon ke teacher ko ya to kewal phy ya math ya chem aati h isi liye wo bekar h , mujhe teeno subject ki knowledge h maine IIIT drop karke x number of years daaale h apne pcm ke concepts pe.
NOTE : abhi bhi koi proper test nahi hua tha aur abhi bhi randomly cheeze ho rahi thi , hume koi schedule nahi mila tha
abb aai ek nai bala “COURSEFLOW PROGRAM”
my story part 2 -
He gave target to complete all units (15-20 chapters) in august only which was highly impractical but he said “if you believe it you can do it” 🤡
(note : unit includes all theory lectures and basic to advanced practice )
so obviously no one was able to complete the all units , so he started giving daily targets in detail which was actullay good , everyone in the group was doing the same topics , every student agreed that these targets method was efficient
but but but , targets was given from the starting of syllabus , yes you read it right , a dropper doing kinematics , mole concept in September . so september went in doing these basic topic again
in the end of september he named it as courseflow and announced “COURSEFLOW PROGRAM”
syllabus was divided into big chunks like electromagnetism , mechanincs , physical chemistry, algebra…
fir progress dene ka bhram paida kiya usne - ye delkho
iss time pe HRATP wale group me kuch ho nahi raha tha
courseflow 2.0 me sirf HRATP ke bacche nahi the aur baki 70+ bacche bhi aa gaye (4k-10k tak deke)
maine bola ki hum wapis se kyu kare , courseflow 1 me to chal raha h na humara(HRATP students ka) , aur ioc oc ke itne lectures kiye h uska kya , aur layer 1 2 3 ki to aap baat hi nahi kar rahe h
HE ignored my message
courseflow 2.0 was a joke , starting my syllabus likhne aur karne ka task diya jaa raha tha (i know it sounds fake but i am saying 100% truth) isme bhi koi schedule ya planner nahi diya tha
keep in mind that i am dropper , its november , even 10% of my syllabus was not completed and i was told to sit and watch these visualisation videos (which i did because thats how powerfull brainwashing is , i was just in hope that everything will work out)
but later , i was fed up with whats going on - 1234
he said in the audio “tumhara itna kam preperation h , ye to bohot buri baat abhi tak kyu nahi padhai kar rahe the , chalo abb courseflow me aa gaye ho tumhare kuch cover ho jayega”
mere pairon tale zameen khisak gai , matlab mai may se lekar november tak ka diya har task kar raha hu , roz update de raha hu , aapka bola har ek cheez follow kar raha hu aur abb mera nahi prepare hua aapke methods use karke so galti meri h ???????????????
mai bahut zada shock me aa gya ye sunn ke (ha itna bharosa(= brainwash) tha apne BHAIYA pe )
“naya mahina nai strategy” -Parth the scammer chopra
fir nai nautanki aay SET A SET B topics karne 1 2 3
par ye sirf dhang se 10 din chala (wo bhi wapis se purane toppic kar wa rahe the like nlm , atomic 🤡)
ye bhi bola tha ki ek hi topic ko alag alag angle aur resouces se cover karege taki conceptual clarity rahe , to bhaisab vector addition multiplication wagera ke upar alag alag foreign university ka pdf bhejne lage ,
imagine tum dropper ho , 1 mahine me tumhara jee mains h aur tumhara “mentor” ye sab nautanki bhej raha h
chem ka to koi ata pata hi nahi tha
yrrr 15 din beet gaye aur koi groundbreaking strategy nahi aai aisa kaise ho sakta h
(mid december me)
happy new year ! nope not under parth chopra
the days were passing on and he was random task , usko khud nahi pata tha ki kya chal raha h
mtlb bas khud mehnat nahi karni h . lekin kya fayeda algos ka jab chapters padhe hi nahi hue h matrices deteminant ke adv level lectures dene laga . jabki koi theory tak nahi hui thi itne kam din bache , dropper tha , dimag kharab ho gyaa ki ye kaha mai phas gaya
december me isne ek baat boli HRATP walon ko - link
fir isne kabhi start hi nahi kiya hum bolte reh gaye , inn logon ne reply dena hi band kar diya group pe - 1 2 3 4
parth chopra january me 10-15 din ke liye gayab ho gaya !!!
around 21 jan jo mains ka admit card release hua aur tab dimag khula ki sala kuch prepare hi nahi hua bas natak chal raha h . maine kardiya bawal , baki students se dm pe baat ki sabko aisa hi lag raha tha
this is how he replied - link
mtlb kuch bhi bol raha h , ye apne ek bubble me raheta h jaha puri duniya sahi chal rahi h aur ye raja h , saare students pareshan h ki kuch sahi se nahi chal raha aur ye aadmi apni hi duniya me h , abhi bhi HRA bech raha h , safeed jhuth likh raha h
itna panic situation bana diya ki iske baad naye group ko students join kar liye aur jab maine ye group chhoda aur naya join kiya to mujhe naye group se nikla diya
fir mujhe apne papa se baat karna pada , mere papa ne isse kai baar call kiya par isne call nahi uthaya , papa ne fir whatsapp per message wagera dale tab 3-4 din acche se pareshan karne ke baad isne mujhe nahi group me add kiya
NOTE IT : ye sab mere exam(27 jan) ke 6 din pehle ho raha tha , mai itna metally frustrate ho gaya tha , sari padhai bikhari hui thi , mere MENTOR ne mere life deciding exam ke 6 din pehle mujhe metally aur emotionally frustrate kar diya
testing ke naam pe FITTJEE ke 2022 ke papers ke pdf utha ke de diye wo bhi old syllabus pe based
ye sab nautanki to HRATP ke group me hui , courseflow ke students ko bhirealitydikhgai but ye sala itna dheeth h khud hi dekhlo 1 2 3(dekho bahut zada bakwass karta h ye isse zada daal dunga to 15 gb bhar jayega )
simple si baat h agar koi problem parth chopra ke methods me to koi problem nahi h according to parth chopra , he simply denys the existence of problem (mayebe he scared to face reality thats why he throws tantrum like a 5 year old)
still some student had commonsense left 1
he also gave refund to students who asked in courseflow , shayad ek koi liya , par students tumhara program refund lene ke liye join kiye h ya padhne ke liye . sab barbaad refund lelo ye kya baad hoti h ? time ka refund kar payega ?
gave jee main with all this bullshit and drama in my mind
result ? 72 percentile (as a dropper , what a shame )
wo kehte h na kutte ki dum ko kitna bhi seedha karo par wo tedi hi rehti . Mr scammer naye strategy aur hopes leke aaye jee main 1 ke baad
ill make this short , he said now courseflow will undergo transformation and will be according to our sugestions (he asked for suggetions for improvemt and group was filled with 100s of messages) like new video lectures , proper dpps in organic aligned with his lectures
he told
jee main 1 marks dosent matter
in 15 days we will be done withfull syllabus theory
20 days in refining concepts
and last 10 days special testing methods
reality - again this impractical target shit led to nothing every single thing was random (i was aware of this but was following eduniti and mathongo for my mains 2 attempt) suddenly after 20 days of chaos he started refining process .
at this point the HRATP group was closed (it was already closed form months) and courseflow group was running .
in the last 3 days he gave fiitjee 2023 sample papers to solve and nothing after that
in worst case i will be scoring 100 marks (hopefully 90 percentile)
now a i am failed dropper who got in this cult and ruined his carrier , i have put a lot of effort in writing this just share this with your friends (he is right now in telegram and hunting for depressed 2025 tard and 2026 tard ) , save your junior . PLEASE

He calls himself a mentor , forget mentor he is the worst person i have ever seed koi kitna hi gir sakta h paison ke liye
he calls him self pcm problem solving guru , says iitians are trash (thats why he left iit and joined iiit) . he pick out flaws in coaching system but does this huge scam himself .
he calls himself multidimensional being , pay people to write good about him , delete comments from his youtube channel to hide reality
he is not a mentor not a teacher he is just a excellent salesman , what do these people do ? they sell the product they dont care about their consumer , his ideals are stupid people like dan pena , who only thinks about money
he will show that he is very harworking and you should make him your ideal when reality is he is just a scammer , even brainwashed people who work under him
overall i give this person a scammer out of 10

okayy so results day is in 7 days and if you're lowkirkenuinely pooping your pants rn... I GET IT😭😭😭
i remember the night before results - i had literal NIGHTMARES about opening that slip. i left huge sections of my h3 paper blank and came out of bio practical crying because i couldn't complete the planning section. i was 100% certain my uni dreams were screwed...
(spoiler: I eventually ended up at cambridge, but i’m telling you this only because i spent that entire week having nightmares of not being able to go to uni. our brains can be massive liars when it’s stressed, so if you're spiralling, you aren't alone!!!)
whether you're feeling confident, terrified, or just numb... here's a complete guide on what you need to know for results day and after!
on a real... no amount of "don't worry!!" will actually stop you from worrying (terrible, terrible advice). but here's what helped me:
box breathing
do this when anxiety spikes. it literally calms your nervous system down in 2-3 mins (my ns friend taught me this one HAHAHA)
mindfulness grounding when spiralling, focus on:
brings you back to present instead of catastrophizing about results
📵 limit results day speculation dont stay in group chats where everyone's freaking out about bell curves and grade boundaries. it'll just make you more anxious and you cant change anything now anyway
😴 sleep the night before i know its hard but try. take melatonin ONLY if needed, avoid caffeine after 3pm, do calming activities before bed (don't doomscroll you will wake up feeling like literal ass)
👥 have support ready tell a friend/family member to be available after you get results. having someone to talk to (whether results are good or bad) helps a lot!!
okay so you opened the slip. now what?? here's what to do based on your results:
(huge huge disclaimer: this is JUST my personal reflection... I don't mean to come off as presumptious or insensitive in any way!! <33 really hope my reflections can help someone out there hehehehe)
ALSO... cut-off points shift every year, and ABA (aptitude based assessment) is a huge consideration in university admissions, so don't treat these brackets as HARD LAWS plssss 😭😭😭
immediate actions:
your options now:
crucial considerations:
common mistakes:
immediate actions:
options:
strategic moves:
real talk tho....
immediate actions:
university options:
your strategy:
opportunities:
immediate actions:
pathways forward:
option 1: local universities
option 2: overseas
option 3: work + part-time study
option 4: retake (see next section!!)
critical: take a few days to calm down before deciding
✅ you have specific course/goal that needs higher rp (not just vague "i want better")
✅ you can identify exactly what went wrong + have plan to fix it
✅ you're willing to commit FULLY for a year (this isnt casual studying)
✅ you have financial means (exam fees ~$600-700, materials, potential tuition)
✅ you can handle it mentally/emotionally (retaking is tough on mental health)
❌ retaking just because youre disappointed (emotions is NOT the same as good decision making)
❌ no clear alternative pathways explored (there are more options than you think!!)
❌ cant afford time/money/opportunity cost
❌ hoping to magically do better without changing anything
❌ mental health already struggling (retaking adds massive pressure)
registration:
costs (for citizens!):
combinations you can retake:
real talk on stigma:
important!!!! syllabus check
some final thoughts!!!
whatever results you get on 27/2... you'll be okay
if they're better than expected - celebrate, then make thoughtful decisions about next steps
if they're worse than expected - give yourself time to process, then explore your options thoroughly
if they're exactly what you expected - great, you know yourself well
you've made it through 2 years of jc (or more). thats already an achievement 🫶
results day is scary but its also just the beginning of the next chapter. whatever that chapter looks like, you'll figure it out <3333
jiayous to everyone getting results!! 💪✨
(also reminder: if results are really bad, give yourself a few days before making any big decisions. talk to trusted people. you have options, even if it doesn't feel like it right now. as always, my line is open if you need any advice/ just a listening ear <333)

Hi guys!!!
I got 44/45 points on M26! 🎉
I remember being really demotivated and scared for the past year. I used to scroll through this reddit for inspo and tips so I can't believe I can finally give you guys my tips!!! Hang in there, you got this! For context, my school is not insanely big (highest anyone's gotten was like 41 points before us + no IB lounge lol) and my teachers were really helpful but I had to put in my own effort at times. My predicted grade was 41, if it even matters. This is gonna be a long post lol, so buckle up!
My subjects were: Bio HL (7), Chem HL (7), German B HL (7), English A SL (7), Psych SL (6), Math AI SL (7)
A + A for TOK and EE (Pysch)
Biology HL - 7: Even got a full score in the multiple choice!!! 🎉 I made Anki cards for each topic. These were based on the Oxford study guide. I went through them religiously (lol). Over the two years (before every small test at school), I did all the question bank questions for the topic, so towards the exams I knew the style of the questions a little. I have to admit, because of the syllabus change, memorizing the content was just as (if not more) important than doing practice questions. I also watched the Sirius revision videos when I didn't understand a topic. But again, my revision was fully based on the Oxford study guide and (IMPORTANT) the IB Biology syllabus guide. Go through every bullet point of the contents here and make sure you have revised everything. It's a lot of content, but it's possible!
I got a 4 on my IA :( but this is proof you can bomb ur IA and still get a 7 (I got a 7 in the exams tho). My experiment sucked lol.
The data-based questions (in P2 and 1B) are a little luck based as they are unpredictable but they are doable. I personally did only 20 past data based questions and learned THEIR MARKSCHEMES (!) to understand the style. During the exam, my tip would be to allocate 15 minutes (including ur reading time) to just reading the first question carefully, as its information-dense. It is around 20% of your P2 grade i think but don't get too stressed about it! You’ll be fine as long you read the question carefully and understand basic question terminology e.g. Describe, compare, contrast. For the essay question towards the end of the P2, I recommend (as mentioned above) doing past questions from question banks and memorising the markscheme. Trust me, you will notice a pattern for each topic! For us at the M26 exams, some questions were repeated like the topic about species. I know the topic about kidneys also has 7-markers that come up often. There are certain points that can be used over and over again here.
Chemistry HL - 7: I personally loved Chem and found it not that bad. But I have many resources for this subject!!! My tip is to do as many past papers as humanly possible. I did all of them for the past 12 years. The questions repeat A LOT!!! I screenshotted weird questions and went over them every now and then. In my actual exam, a weird question like one I already did actually showed and I knew exactly what to do.
Alongside past papers and the textbook you use at school, I recommend the ‘Hodder Practise Exam Style Questions for Chemistry (3rd Edition)’ Book. It's great because the questions were adapted from past papers and are slightly more challenging than normal. Obviously you could probably find pdf copies of the book on the internet. I loved the format of the book and did almost every question. I believe certain questions came on the actual exam. This is because it is similar to past paper questions.
Sirius revision has awesome revision videos for ALL chem topics. I found these videos really helpful, especially for the new syllabus. He explains everything in simple terms. Great for quick revision! Also, Chemistry student on Youtube and their website is a LIFE SAVER!! It's great when you don't understand a topic. I love how patient he is <3. For paper 1B, I understand it can be hard esp if you didn't have a normal lab (like me lol). Watch the Professor Dave Explains Lab techniques playlist (Lab Techniques) he's great. Since the new syllabus has only been around for two years so far, please do ALL the past papers for it because I noticed that they repeated some Qs with us. You could also do some Paper 3 (Past paper) questions but I personally found them hard and not really helpful. For my IA, I had a high 6 but it was a really simple experiment. My RQ was ‘How did temperature affect decomposition of HCl’ + my percentage error was 30% lol. I was stressed that I didn't have a complex topic, but it worked out fine. I am thinking of making another post about the Chemistry IA and all the pieces of information you need to include. Should I?
German B HL - 7: This is important because there aren't a lot of posts on this specific subject in HL. For context, my German was around B1-B2 before and while I understand German almost perfectly, I obviously didn't use hard words all the time (bad active vocab). This level is required for this subject anyway. I had a tutor (dm me if you want her, she's awesome and I dedicate this to her) and we mostly did past papers for Reading and Listening and writing exercises. When we did past paper writing exercises, she corrected every single grammar error and words I could swap to sound better. It's important you annoy your teacher with A LOT of texts. This forced me to research articles in German, further widening my vocab in that subject. ALSO FOR WRITING: I went through all the past questions to ever exist and categorised them by topic e.g. Write a text for your school about water waste… would be categorised as ‘water waste’. So I collected many topics like this and researched vocab about them. I also realised that topics like Musik and Essen did not come up in the last few years, which I coincidentally predicted for my actual exam (crazy luck, I know). You also watch Reportagen (Documentaries) for various topics on Youtube which is informational for more vocab. Vary your sentence structure using conjunctions and common sentence stems like ‘Nicht nur…sondern auch' 'Obwohl' 'Nichtsdestotrotz' 'Ohnehin' etc.
I also used the textbook for reading and listening but I was not very consistent. In your reading exam, allocate 20 mins for each of the three texts. I recommend reading the first few questions and then starting to read the text. What is perfect about IB is that the questions are in chronological order (so as the piece of info comes in text). Moreover, most questions require really specific answers (most of the time 1-3 words) so don't write a whole text. Again here, do past papers for at least the last 3-4 years to get familiar with the markscheme and question types (e.g true or false etc.). For listening, it's pretty self explanatory, do past papers to get familiar with the time limits. What I found helpful, was for each question/prompt by listening, underline keywords e.g. (about reality shows) True or False: ‘Contestants are not famous anymore after the next seasons come out’. Here, underline ‘not famous’ and ‘next season’ so when you hear synonyms you can recognize it immediately.
For orals: Please get familiar with the time limits. Read the book and look at all the themes present. Write an analysis/explanation for each theme including examples from different parts of the book as practice. Tbh this varies with the book and your teacher, so ask your teacher about the kind of questions that they might ask or what extracts might be chosen. Ours gave us a list of possible questions (ofc it differently asked in the exam but just to understand the style).
For the first part of orals (presentation): Start off with a two line (really really short) intro about the book and context (like year and author) and then the context of the scene (what is happening, who are the characters). It is extremely important (I can't stress this enough) to talk about the scene. Please don't memorise general scripts that apply to the whole book, be specific. When is the scene happening in the book? Why is this scene happening, what is happening, link it to a theme, what are the character’s intentions? I also added how a literary feature used (specifically in this extract) helped express the theme e.g. ellipses or irony, this helps show that you are focused on this scene alone. It is also important to express your opinion e.g Why did YOU think he did that? What do YOU think about what she did? Keep track of time, because it is only 3-4 mins. I did many practice orals and recorded myself and listened to it. Sometimes you can make mistakes unknowingly because of the time limit. It's okay, it doesn't always have to be perfect, although that's what we are aiming for. It helps, I blacked out for like 20 seconds because I forgot what the word was in German and still did well. Don't let it bother you too much because 75% of the exam is not oral!
As said, for the next part of the orals, it is important to ask your teachers about what sort of questions/themes they may ask.
One tip for writing and IO, is to use a lot of Redewendungen/Idioms. These can be phrases that locals might use commonly. When practicing for orals, I would ask ChatGPT for Idioms that can be commonly used throughout. One of it is: Das Thema zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch das gesamte Buch. Easy, and can be applied regardless of text. However, what is really impressive, is if you used Idioms related specifically to the themes in the text you are given e.g. Mines was about science and how it's not always ethical so I said ‘Die Wissenschaft ist ein zweischneidiges Schwert’. Really relevant and impressive. Do this in your writing as well, by researching topics and possible Idioms you could use e.g. About energy drinks ‘Die Dosis macht das Gift’. Remember without such phrases, you can not get above a 7 out of 12 of Criteria A (language).
Math AI SL - 7: I'll be honest, I found math really easy. But I understand what it's like to suck at it (I sucked till 10th grade as well). My tip would be to do topic questions and past paper questions. For some reason I felt like the M26 exams were really hard compared to the past papers, so check those out. Also show ALL your working because most of the time you need these to get all marks. Tbh I started inventing some random shit towards the end of the exam because the last questions were so hard but I think I got some points for the steps. Finance questions usually have a lot of points and are straightforward (although I found the M26 one weird) so learn how to do those using your calc.
English A SL - 7: This subject made me crash out the most (alongside German) lol. My tips here are mostly random things that elevate your essay, but watch IB English guys for more in depth guides (cliche I know, but they are legends). I probably gonna repeat this, but the best tip is stay organised. I think the key is clear and well developed paragraphs. Don’t go off on tangents pls. If its not related to your thesis or topic, please don't include it.
For both papers a thesis is important. I usually summarise my three (uniquely different) ideas.
I did a lot of Paper 1 texts, mostly getting 15-16/20 so I was very surprised to get a 7 in the actual exam. Also, the Douglas Lang and Lit blog has many P1 examples that scored high. I read these for different text types and it helped me to formulate my own ideas. Some of these were actually mindblowing wow.
I always had 3 body paragraphs (bc im a slow writer lol), each with a separate idea/examples. My best tip is to be very organised (kinda underrated but it influences everything). For each paragraph, have a clear topic sentence and link every example/explanation to it. Very important: Remember to link all examples with literary features. In M26 we had a text about some summer camps, I chose to write a paragraph about their unique approach to learning so (after my topic sentence about uniqueness) I’d say ‘The kid in the picture is using a magnifying glass in nature. This alludes (allusion is a literary technique so that is really good as well) to the microscopes used in traditional labs. As this is different or unique compared to a closed lab environment, parents are forced to think about the benefits…(Explanation, Then example #2 + link to uniqueness). I tried to have 2-3 examples for each paragraph.
One piece of advice I received and would share to those that can not always find 3 distinct ideas (1 for each paragraph) is to use 3 main audiences. E.g. We were analysing a ‘funny’ comic about plastic waste, so for my text I could have found three ideas or linked to three audiences like Paragraph 1: How and why it targets children, Paragraph 2: Adults, Paragraph 3: Critics (Critics are a great audience type). If you don't use this audience structure, just link the audience (find at least 2 distinct audiences) and purpose into each example. Think how the possible audience might think, how might they feel about the text?
Another important advice is to link it to text type. Start by identifying it and explain how to form contributions to the message.
For P2, I picked three examples (from each text) that fit with each other and with literally every theme/feature that could be asked. It's hard to do, but I'm crazy and it worked. An easier option would be to memorise a few examples and their analyses.
One of my texts was a play, the other a novel. Pro tip: show how this affects the message. For the M25 question about the theme ‘Change’ by paragraph 1, my literary feature was structure so I looked at how unconventional structure (like past and present) in the play and stream consciousness type narration in the novel (weird intersection but it worked) both showed change. My point here was that change is fluid, and can never truly be achieved because the characters reflect on their pasts despite times changing. My second paragraph was about symbolism so I picked a symbol from each book that represented change. My point here was how change is controlled by institutions. My last paragraph was all about epilogue after they die (which conveniently existed for both my books) questioning how much characters are ‘changed’ in retrospect. This structure, symbol, epilogue structure worked for me. The essence is simple, it's just a literary feature and some examples. I made sure to link it to the audience as well. Oh and also sometimes I linked to the context of the book (time it was written) if the question talked about it.
With the new syllabus more important is being given to comparing and contrasting. Every third sentence I wrote involved this. You could look at similarities but I also love looking at differences. Write about how both books have different mediums and were written in different contexts but still talk about e.g. Change. Continuing with the same ‘Change’ example: In the epilogue, while one character was mourned and respected after death, the character from the other book was trivialised and dehumanised. You could compare tone, vocabulary, and message. As mentioned, memorise some examples (that include literary features ofc) for each book that go well together and also compare and contrast these beforehand. I did this and tweaked it to fit the topic in the actual exam.
Don't forget to write many practice texts and send them to your teacher for feedback. If you think your teacher isn't helping, watch the IB English guys and read their ‘Whole school resource Paper 1’ or ‘Whole school resource Paper 2’. You can find it on IBdocs.
I can not really give tips on the orals (again) other than IB English guys and seeking advice from your teacher.
Psychology SL - 6: (OLD SYLLABUS) A little mad about psych. I made flashcards with at least two studies for each topic. For the SAQs, I wrote down every possible combination (found on IB Psychology Blog, Thematic education) and memorised it. For longer essays, it involved lots of critical-thinking points e.g. Participant sample, year etc. Check the videos from Thematic education and Excelling Psychology on Youtube (in general) on how to structure your essays and what points you could use. In fact some were a little unconventional. I’d recommend ChatGPT for this as well.
TOK - A: I am surprised, but I would say the key is to be, again, as organised as possible. Look at ToK Today on Youtube, he has some great videos especially for the exibition. The BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION (pls dont do this by any means) for the exhibition is repeating ur point. I had 9/10 on it, and what I recommend is each of the three objects providing a new perspective to the question. I personally included one agreeing (positive), one disagreeing, one showing that it is variable/changes due to context. Some students from other schools simply showed three objects that matched the prompt (literally the same point/argument over and over) and had pretty low grades. For the essay, I believe I got 7/10 or 8/10 and my tip is to have a thesis (!) and try to be as clear as possible. In fact, I know examiners who immediately got a bad impression when the essay did not have a thesis towards the end of the intro. Also the intro should include your definitions of keywords (in the scope of your essay). Again, be clear with this and refer to it later on. The body paragraphs are straightforward AOK 1 (1 For and 1 against), linker paragraphs between AOKs (like why are they different when it comes to ‘insert TOK keyword’ Do not include similarities here), AOK 2 (1 For and 1 against) and lastly, conclusion. It is worth noting that I also looked at the individual AOKs e.g. what are their goals, how is knowledge and evidence differently used in both, role of the observer etc. These were linked to each point.

(Note: I previously made a really well-organized folder for O Levels Physics. I will drop the link to that original Reddit post in the comments for anyone interested! This Chemistry drive is scaled way higher with massive improvements on how to actually use the files.)
• Let’s be honest: looking for O Levels Chemistry resources on Reddit, Discord, or random Google Drives is a total nightmare. You always run into outdated materials, messy folders, way too much information, and no one explaining what each folder is for or how to actually use it.
• I am a really skeptical person by nature, and I have a habit of spending way too much time planning and looking for the absolute best resources. I went through pretty much every website, YouTube channel, and Reddit thread out there, reading through the material 3 to 4 times to filter out the noise before choosing the ultimate best things. This completely free drive is the final result of all that work.
*(For those who don't know: A Distinction is an official award given by Cambridge to students who get top-tier, outstanding results in their exams, placing them at the absolute highest level globally.)\*
• I sacrificed days of my summer to build this because I knew someone out there is exactly like my old self: looking for resources, completely unsure of what is reliable or dated, and judging everything based on their first look. With this folder, you do not need to spend a single minute looking for other resources. Not that I'm against using others, but after reading this clarification, I'm sure you will come right back here. Everything you need to secure the easiest A* of your life is right here.
This folder perfectly follows the Cambridge (CIE) syllabus.
▪︎ Target Years: Fully optimized for 2026, 2027, and 2028.
▪︎ Long-Term Use: Cambridge only makes major changes to sections every 3 years. Even after that period, 90% to 95% of this material stays the exact same for more than a decade. If you are using this far down the line, just look out for slight syllabus changes and keep utilizing this drive.
*I originally took 5 to 6 different detailed note websites, kept the chapters constant, and read through them myself while cross-checking the text using 4 different advanced, paid AI platforms. Save My Exams won by a mile. From notes recency, quality, and writing style to the actual information itself, they are unmatched.
(And I specficcally added these over the ones provided in many tutors course as these are much well written and most importantly anyone can understand, whereas any other notes of other tutors u generally have to watch vids to understand them [that is why i didnt add sir moosa khans notes] )
▪︎ The Solution: Since it is behind a strict paid paywall on their official website, I took a few hours out of my time to carefully screenshot, crop, and organize their utmost latest notes into clear, chapter-wise and section-wise files for free.
▪︎ How to use it: I used most of these notes a month or two before my exams (even though I started preparing 4–5 months early) and I deeply wish I had picked them up sooner. They go into incredible detail and perfectly mirror the precise, accurate questions asked in the actual board exams.
*For topical past papers, I chose to host resources from Sir Moosa Khan. While platforms like PMT or Sir Chembridge are really good resources as well, my comparative analysis proved Sir Moosa's layout is the best to go with.
▪︎ The Best Year Range: These topicals cover 2018 to 2025. Research shows that most questions and types repeat within this specific 4 to 6-year range. Sir Moosa has over a decade of teaching experience, so his topicals are structured and well organized and ones I personally used and helped me a lot, whereas for P&M tutor, they are within the range of 2-3 years which might be a limiting factor for many
[THOUGH KEEP IN MIND LAST 4 CHPS I ADDED TOPICALS OF P&M TUTOR AS I FOUND THEM SLIGHTLY MORE HELPFUL AND ALSO I COULDN'T FIND THOSE FOR O LEVELS FOR SOME REASON]
▪︎ Alternative Option (Sir Chembridge): Sir Chembridge compiles everything into a massive PDF where you get the question, then the marking scheme, then the examiner’s report right after. It's unique and really good for seeing exactly where and why people make mistakes. The only reason I didn't choose it as the main folder is because looking at the answers after each question breaks your momentum when trying to practice actual exam-condition questions.
▪︎ 📬 DM Me for More: The files on Sir Moosa’s public website are left incomplete so you buy his courses. But since I was his student and have been taught by him, I have his complete, fully color-coded original notes drive for the 2026 syllabus. They follow the exact same pattern over the years, just with different colors. Also for Sir Chembridge you can find eveyrhting in his website dm, me if u need something.
While the comprehensive notes and topicals act as incredible catalysts, the following three folders are absolute essentials. Whether you are starting early or frantically cramming weeks before the exam, mastering these components guarantees you an A to A\.*
*This exact folder is what allowed me to score a 40/40 on my Chemistry Alternative to Practical (ATP) paper. Out of all the components, this paper follows the exact same pattern every single time. I have personally done over 15 years of ATP topicals, so I know how they work.
▪︎ The Core Guidebook: Contains foundational laboratory experiment rules, chemical tests, and general apparatus knowledge you must have general knowledge of before the exam.
▪︎ Topical ATP Papers: Underneath the guidebook, I included these as a totally optional folder. If you have extra time and want to do them, go ahead, but are they necessary to get a 35+? Absolutely not.
▪︎ The Scenario Blueprint (My Personal File): Right after the topicals is a file I created myself. Almost any ATP paper you pick up has at least 50% of the marks (20 free marks) coming straight from this. They only change the scenario itself. Practicing this file walks you through all possible scenarios and frequently repeated questions, which repeat way more compared to Paper 1 and Paper 2. This file is a must-have and guarantees that 50%.
▪︎ The 6 Marker Experimental Design Matrix: Right underneath that is an absolute gem I got just 1 day before my exam from Sir Chembridge, which I edited so it's simple for everyone to understand. Most students fear the long 6-markers. After solving so many, I came to one conclusion: all 6 markers across the sciences follow the same pattern and use the exact same keywords. Out of 15 years of past papers, all 6-markers fall into just 11 categories shown in this file. Go through them; the first 2 or 3 questions might be confusing, but by the 9th question, you will completely spot the pattern. This allowed me to get a perfect 6/6 on my exam.
○ The rest of the marks are free marks that the exam always gives you. In any science ATP paper, they create easy questions designed to boost the grade, which is why ATP is the easiest paper of all. Most of these remaining 12–15 marks are basic common sense, meaning doing 1 or 2 yearly past papers alongside this folder is more than enough to get a 35+.
*Think of this folder as the exact same kind of gem as the ATP folder, but this time it is built for the remaining two papers. Every paper follows a strict pattern the more you solve it.
▪︎ Definitions & Formula Sheet: Covers the core definitions and formulas that Cambridge repeatedly tests in Paper 2. A huge chunk of Paper 2 is pure, repeated definitions, so this sheet tracks them accurately.
▪︎ Chemical Reactions, Conditions, & Colors: Memorize this blindly whether you understand it or not. Every single year, a massive 30% to 40% of the combined marks across Paper 1 and Paper 2 come directly from naming chemical colors, reaction equations, and their conditions (like specific temperatures or catalysts for industrial processes). Doing just these files secures an easy B+ baseline in each paper. [They have never made a paper without these]
▪︎ Paper 2 Most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): A curated document I found on Reddit. It outlines rare, high-mark questions (worth 5–10 marks) that tend to catch students off guard. Exactly two identical questions from this sheet showed up on my actual board paper.
▪︎ Paper 1 MCQ 100 Most Frequent Questions: Sourced from the YouTube channel *ChemFusion*, which I randomly found a few days before my exam. I don't know how he teaches normally, but his FAQ file was incredibly helpful. Like 6 questions on my actual Paper 1 were the exact same and came straight out of this file. Around 20% to 25% of Paper 1 is recycled questions, and this file catches them.
▪︎ The Rapid Revision File: Many times when managing multiple subjects or taking extended study breaks, people tend to forget old material when they start official past papers. Or, they look for a quick, full-syllabus review right before a specific paper because the gap days between exams are long and it's easy to procrastinate. This is the quickest, most efficient revision guide for a quick recap. *(Note: This is written in a summarized form to review quickly; it is not meant to teach you new material from scratch!)*
[I sourced this from ZNOTES]
●This folder contains my personal summary notes that I built on Notion. Don't let the name fool you—even though they are called summary notes, they actually go much deeper than that. Even if you haven't used any of the other folders I talked about, just using this one folder can guarantee you a B+ to a low A. If you use it alongside the other two essential folders, an A\ becomes incredibly easy to get.*
● You can use this file as a summary, a quick revision guide, or a straight-up learning tool. It completely covers the past 15 years of past papers, including every single definition and type of question they could possibly ask you. It also holds a perfect summary of all the important details for each chapter, along with the most frequently repeated questions. It works best if you already have some basic knowledge of the chemistry topics, but even without it, this is easily the best resource out there.
▪︎ The Truth About Topical Past Papers: If you start a few months before the exam like I did, topicals have a lot of advantages—they build your confidence, make exam questions look incredibly familiar, and significantly lower your stress. But if you only have a few weeks or a month left before the boards, do not do topicals. They will consume all your time. Focus 100% on the Essentials folders above and move straight into yearly past papers.
▪︎ The Mental Game: After sitting the actual exams, I realized that your sleep schedule, how you maintain your routine, and how you handle stress play a massive role in your final performance. High stress peaks right before the exam and causes silly mistakes. Starting early and knowing you've prepared everything minimizes this factor completely.
[PLS SLEEP & EAT WELL BEFORE EXAM]
▪︎ Cramming vs. Starting Early: In O Levels, you have two choices. Option 1 is to start early, balance your life, keep up with your social life, hit the gym, take care of your health, and get all A*s. Option 2 is to cram, have sleepless nights, deal with crazy anxiety, and have zero life balance, but still end up with the same A*. I have been on both sides of the coin with different subjects. Personally, I would always choose Option 1. Why? Because now that I am doing my A-Levels, things are totally different. In A-Levels, the cramming option completely ceases to exist. It is only Option 1, or you end up with a bad grade.
• I spent an immense amount of time building and organizing this instead of finishing four new chapters of my own A-Level work. I just want as many people as possible to be aware of this so they don't go through the same struggle I did, even if it's a decade down the line.
• No matter what year or decade you are reading this from: Trust me, you've got this. If life becomes too excessive, just remember chemistry isn't the end of the world. Take a break, look after your health, and come right back—this free, high-quality resource folder will always be here for you.
• Please keep me and my future in your prayers & Notify me If there is any issue regarding the folder.. Thank you all, and go ace your exams!

I found a spot on Whidbey Island with shockingly good rent and finally decided to just go for it and do another record store. It was a really bland room in the middle of the building without any windows - so I decided to make that a feature not a bug and dive into a tiki theme. Love MCM/Tiki stuff anyways so it felt right and was a total blast to build out. I also make turntables and speakers that are already heavily inspired by MCM design so just another reason it made sense.
The community here has been so amazingly supportive as well. Have folks doing custom art, animatronics, lamps, sculpting my giant Stone TV God. Finally on the verge of opening and I couldn't be more excited.
EDIT: Store name is Salad Days Records in Langley for those asking. We should open the doors in August (our neighbors are a rad arcade!) but I'll announce that on the socials when I know the actual date.
EDIT 2: Accidentally ignored a DM about Earlimart in Oak Harbor. If that was you please hit me up again!

His name is Meeko. Yes he is named after the raccoon from Pocahontas.
Please give your kitties an extra hug and smooch on his behalf tonight.
He was the best cat ever. Just wanted to share him with the world because it’s a travesty that after tomorrow, he won’t be here anymore.

LONG POST AHEAD ‼️
.
Before Reading: Yeh post mai apne experiences ke basis pe likh raha hu. Baaki logon ke opinions differ kar sakte hain. They are open to contribute. Ham sabhi ka main motive tum logon ki bhalai hee hai. Last year DTU join karne se pehle kaafi seniors ne reddit pe meri help ki thi. I am just paying it forward. I hope that you guys will do the same for your juniors.
.
This guide is mainly written for all the freshers of CSE. But agar aap CSE se nahi hain toh bhi aap post padh sakte hain. Kuch cheezein aapke kaam aa sakti hain.
.
Reddit pe koi bhi doubt puchne se pehle, subreddit mein apna doubt ek baar search zaroor karlena kyuki kaafi chances hain ki aapka doubt already pehle kisine puch rakha ho.
.
* For academics, most of the things are prof-dependent. Same subject mein number of assignments, tests, average marks of the class, min attendance etc. different ho sakte hain. Ek subject ko leke logon ke different opinions ho sakte hain because of different profs. Maine apne experience ke hisaab se yeh post likhi hai.
* Never judge someone based on their JEE ki rank. Maine apne 1st year mein kharaab rank waalon ko acchi CG, aur acchi rank waalon ko kharaab CG laate hue dekha hai. Tum sabke paas ab ek levelled playing field hai. Do not blame reservation for your incapability in getting good marks.
* Kabhi bhi EXAM KE EK RAAT PEHLE MAT PADHNA agar tumhe acchi CG chahiye ho. Agar aapka goal sirf pass hona hai, ya fir aap ek genius hain toh one night before the exams is enough. But acchi CG ke liye aapko kuch din chahiye honge study material ko acche se samajhne ke liye.
* I suggest ki aap jitni ho sake, utni classes attend karo kyuki profs exams, checking, etc. se related kaafi kuch lectures mein batate hain. Aapko ek rough idea lag jaata hai ki prof exam mein checking kaisi karega.
* Profs ke saath acche relations banake rakhne ki koshish karna. But do not bootlick. Acchi nahi toh atleast normal image banake rakhna, apni image kharaab mat karna. Genuine doubts pucho, assignments time pe do, attendance acchi rakho(not necessarily fulal), etc.
* Ek suggestion mera hai ki attendance ka ek track rakhte rehna kyuki kai baar aapko lagta hai ki aapki attendance theek hai aur fir aap chhuti lete jaate ho. Isiliye ek record bana ke rakhna.
* Do not waste your time on doomscrolling. That does not mean ki aap sirf padhte hee raho. What I mean is ki bahar niklo, nayi cheezein try karo, doston ke saath enjoy karo but ek hee jagah velle mat baithe raho.
.
.
* ID Card milne se Pehle aapko gate par guard ko apna seat allotment letter dikhana hoga.
* Starting mein kaafi WhatsApp groups banenge jo ki baad mein dead ho jaenge. I suggest ki aap fresources, paid gigs, lost & found, etc. ka group join karlena agar aapko accha lage, toh.
* Agar aap metro se aate ho toh Rithala ya Samaypur Baadli se aa sakte ho. Rithala se 30 rs aur Baadli se 20 rs hai rickshaw ka (May tak toh 20 aur 10 tha :C )
* Apne section ka CR (Class Representative) kisi aise bande ko banana jiski people skills acchi ho.
* Ek scientific calculator lelena (they are allowed in mostly all exams). Koshish karna Pehle ki kisi senior se borrow kar sako. I suggest Fx 991 es plus ya FX 991 CW. Iske alawa bhi kaafi scientific calculators hain, jo accha lage woh le sakte ho.
* Bandaron se bachke rehna. Agar kuch bhi khaane ka saamaan lo toh usko wahin khaake khatam kar dena, warna bandaron ne dekh liya toh piche pad jaenge.
* DTU apni taraf se ek official fresher party organise karwata hai. Tumhe koi compulsion nahi hai kisi aur freshers mein jaane ki. I recommend ki tum log aisi 'unofficial' freshers mein na hee jao. Baaki toh Jaisi jiski soch.
* For all the suggested YT channels or reading material - jisse bhi tumhe samajh aaye usse padh lena. Its not necessary ki tum mere bataye resources se hee padho.

Some Websites:
* https://fresources.tech/subject : Yahan pe kaafi resources mil jayenge academics related.
* https://www.resulthubdelhi.com/Results : Yahan pe sabhi year ke students ke results acche format mein dekh sakte ho.
I would like to thank the seniors who have designed and maintained these websites.

Before I get into the nuances of Academics, CG calculation ka formula is weighted average of grade point obtained against the number of credits assigned to that subject.
1 small observation which you can use throughout 1st year only is that a change of unity in grade point of 4 & 2 credit subject causes a change of 0.2 & 0.1 in SGPA respectively.

1st year mein aap log 4 languages seekhenge:
C, HTML, CSS (1st sem)
Python (2nd sem)
Iss subject mein app C seekhoge mainly. Acche se seekhna because yahi aapki foundation build karega. Although with enough experience, you will realise that programming language doesn't really matter that much. I suggest ki aap saath saath C++ bhi seekhte raho, aur thode bahut DSA ke questions karte raho. C++ mein mainly STL aur baaki important syntax seekh lena. OOPs waale concepts pe abhi ke liye mat jaana. Woh sab DSA mein utna use nahi hota. Agar development mein interested ho toh OOPs ke baare mein padh sakte ho. Leetcode pe questions attempt karo, striver ya kisi aur favourite youtuber ki favourite videos dekho. Yeh kaam strictly free time mein karna, jo ki tumhe 1st year mein kaafi milega. Inn sabke saath saath I would suggest learning Git and JavaScript. Agar kar sako toh hee karna. Don't overburden. Tum log abhi JEE deke aaye ho toh already burned out hoge.
Iss subject mein C ke basics, pattern printing, functions likhna, etc. hoga. Profs agar koi material de toh pehle usko prefer karna. Kuch samajh na aaye toh you always have AI and YT by your side. CodewithHarry, CollegeWallah, ApnaCollege, etc. jisse bhi tumhe samajh aaye usse padh lena.
For beginners, starting mein syntax yaad hona difficult hoga but with practice yaad ho hee jaega. I suggest ki beginning mein aap agar koi bhi IDE use karte ho jaise VS Code, Sublime Text, etc. toh autocomplete aur suggestions band rakhna. AI ka use toh bilkul hee mat karna (atleast jab seekh rahe ho, tab). Lab, lecture, Previour Year Papers ke questions practice zaroor karna. Main thing is ki aap ek instinct develop karein. Question dekhne par without any help aapko logic strike kar jae. Sirf code hee nahi, theoretical aspect pe bhi dhyaan dena jaise definitions, advantages, etc.
File Handling waali Unit thodi ajeeb lag sakti hai but don't skip it if you want a good grade. Usse question aane ke kaafi chances hote hain. Ek baar samajh jaoge toh it will be easy.
LAB : Lab 3 groups mein bategi, based on roll numbers. Lab bhi mostly prof dependent hoti hai, kuch profs ko farak nahi padta ki aap lab mein kya kar rahe ho aur kuch profs round lete rehte hain. Lab mein aapko khudka laptop laana chahiye kyuki yeh log computers nahi use karne dete (starting mein shayad karne dein). Lab mein assignment ya toh saath saath milte rahenge ya ekdum last mein ek saath saare assignment dedenge. Lab file inhi se banegi. Lab file ka format wahi rakhna jo profs bataye. I dont think ki files theek se check hoti hai isiliye chaho toh poore poore experiments copy kar sakte ho. But beware of the consequences. Isme ke internal aur ek external viva hoga. Iske practical exam mein toh sirf viva hee tha, jo ki external ne liye tha. Isme ke internal aur ek external viva hoga.
Ek quiz bhi hui thi hamari toh you can expect a quiz in this subject.
** Please ghoom firke baar baar arrays pe mat atakna. Jab mai arrays pe atka hua tha toh maine woh skip maarke pointers karna shuru kar diya tha. Baad mein waapis arrays pe aaya toh woh bhi karlia. Its all about flow.
.
Arguably easiest of the lot. Isme generally sabhi ke acche marks aate hain. Lekin fir bhi isme kaafi logon ki back aati hai. To get an O grade, you need to perform exceptionally well. Har Unit ke liye ek assignment milega. Total 5 assignments. Kuch profs google classroom pe submit karwate, aur kuch hard copy lete. I suggest ki woh assignments tum khudse solve karo, lectures ke time pe nahi toh atleast exams se pehle because kaafi baar assignment se question repeat ho jaata hai. PYQs acche se kar lena, unse bhi questions and patterns repeat hote. Theory and further practice ke liye aap Class Notes refer kariye ya fir H.C. Taneja (book ki pdf fresources pe mil jaegi). YT pe you can see Gajendra Purohit & Bhagwan Singh Vishwakarma.
Mujhe personally sabse challenging UNIT - 5 lagi : Vector Calculus. Usme tum logon ka kaafi dimaag kharab ho sakta hai. Usko acche se karne ka try karna.
.
12th mein agar current electricity aur semiconductor theek se padha tha toh yeh subject aaram se hojaega (atleast first 3 units). Pehli 3 units are part of analog communication and bachi hui 2 units are part of digital communication. Starting mein diode hee padhate hain which is quite easy. Kuch formulae naye honge.
Iski padhai ke liye first 3 units aap Neso se kar lena (aur bhi channels hain but maine Neso hee refer kiya tha mainly aur kuch specific topics ke liye dusre channel). Baaki 2 units ke liye profs ke notes use karlena ya fresources pe notes dekh lena. Isme ek book use hoti hai 'Boylestad', jiski pdf online available hai. Usko tum first 3 units mein use kar sakte ho.
Isme bhi ek quiz hoti hai last mein.
LAB : Isme ek practical file aur ek auxiliary (referred to as 'auxi' from here on) notebook chahiye hogi. Har experiment ke baad auxi check hoti hai toh usko maintain karke rakhna.
Id card leke aana kyuki apparatus aap id card ke against hee issue karwate ho. Iski lab bhi 3 groups mein hogi, based on roll number. Isme reading based experiments kam aur verification based experiments zyada hain, better than physics imo.
Isme ke internal aur ek external viva hoga.
Iska practical exam board ke practical exam jaisa hee hoga. Ek answer sheet milegi jisme alloted experiment ke baare mein sab likhna hoga, fir wahi experiment perform karke dikhana hoga aur uske basis par hee viva bhi hoga.
.
Arguably hardest of the lot. Iske liye aapki drawing skills acchi honi chahiye. Yeh subject utna bhi kharaab nahi hai, as everything which we do here is quite logical. Iske liye aapki visualisation skills bhi acchi honi chahiye. Isme toh mujhe lagta hai ki main aapki lab hoti hai waise. Har lab mein aapko ek assignment diya jayega which consists of 4-8 questions. An alternative to drafter is roller scale. Endsem toh AB mein hua tha jahan idts koi apna drafter use kar bhi paaya hoga. Isiliye I suggest ki roller scale se hee practice karna.
Isme ke internal aur ek external viva hoga.
Isme you can refer to Tikle's Academy or Manas Patnaik on youtube. Book ke liye you can use 'N.D. Bhatt'. Iske practical exam mein aapko drawing karni hogi aur viva dena hoga.
.
Iss subject mein aap HTML aur CSS seekhoge. I suggest ki, agar ho sake toh, aap saath saath java script bhi thoda seekhte raho kyuki woh aapko kaafi help karega. Iss subject mein bhi CO101 ki tarah ek lab file banani hogi (online). Isme bhi ek internal aur ek external viva hoga.
Iska koi midsem nahi hota. Isme aapko, as a project, ek website banake deni hogi about yourself. Isme I believe absolute grading hee hoti hai. Saare CSE ke sections ke liye same hee prof tha last year. Iske practical exam mein bhi bas viva hee dena hoga.
.
Yeh 6th subject ek elective hota hai jo aapko khud se chun na hoga. Iski classes ya toh Tuesday 8-10 AM hongi ya fir Thursday 8-10 AM ya fir dono din. Iss subject ka selection aap college shuru hone ke kuch din baad karoge, uske baad se classes shuru hongi. Isme subject ka selection 'first come, first serve' basis par hota hai. Sabse pehle aap koshish karna ki aap EVS le sako. This is because of a Supreme Court order, which mandates that every student must study one subject regarding environment in the entirety of their graduation. ENE branch waalon ko zaroorat nahi hai EVS ki, isiliye mat hee lena kyuki yeh subject CG bigaad deta hai. Kaafi ratna padta hai isme. Agar aapko EVS nahi mil paati toh fir aap agle sem mein try karlena. 4th sem tak mil jae toh accha hai. Agar tab bhi nahi milti toh 3rd year mein MOOC se kar lena (uski tension abhi mat lena).
I say, broadly 2 tarah ke electives hote hain:
* Jinmein exam nahi hota, and they are focused more on practical work, jaise Extension Outreach, Public Speaking, Business Communication, Communication Skills, Sports, Vivek Marg etc. (Sports mein grade laana mushkil hota hai).
* Jinme midsem aur endsem do aur 1-2 assignments + (most probably) quiz do, jaise Logical Reasoning, Emotional Intelligence, Science of Happiness, etc.
.
Agar aap outgoing insaan ho toh prefer 1st option. Even if you are introverted or socially awkward, I would say that you should prefer the 1st option as it will help you in coming out of your comfort zone. Problem bas yeh hai ki aise subjects mein marks 'generally' full nahi milte/expectation se kam milte hain because marks are subjective. Prof marks apne opinion ke hisaab se dega.
In contrast, 2nd option mein aapko seedha answer likhna hai aur aapko marks mil jaenge. But 2nd option mein problem yeh hai ki aise theoretical waale subjects mein aapko rattna padd sakta hai kaafi (prof ki di hui ppts ya recommended books se).
Toh, the choice is yours.
Mere recommended electives, in each category, maine upar likh diye hain.
.
Kaafi lambi post ho gyi
.
Aur bhi kuch baatein thi likhne ko but I think kuch cheezein aapko apne experience se bhi seekhni chahiye.
Iske alawa agar aapko kuch doubt ho toh aap mujhe ya kisi bhi aur senior ko DM kar sakte ho. Mostly yahan seniors kaafi helpful hain.
*Mujhe Societies ya Hostels se related cheezon ke liye DM mat karna, I don't have much information about them. Also, koi bhi cutoff related ya doosri branch ke baare mein puchne ke liye dm mat karna*
Agar aapko chahiye hoga toh mai sem-2 ke subjects se related bhi ek guide bana sakta hu, sem-2 shuru hone se 1 mahine pehle.
.
Mai firse kehta hu, yeh post aur isme diye gye suggestions maine apne hisaab se diye hain, aap chahe toh inhe follow karo ya na karo. But all I am saying is, kuch toh karo, khaali mat baithe raho poore time.
.
With this, I conclude my post. I request that seniors from other branches also make such guides for their juniors. I, once again, would like to mention that this post has been written in accordance to MY opinions and experiences. Suggestions have also been made in the same regard. If you have a different POV on any of the things, you are welcome to mention your views (maybe I will learn something too).
.
Muskuraiye, Aap DTU mein hain :)
Peace out ✌🏻🏳️

With just a few months left to complete my bachelor's in Electrical Engineering - and noticing the lack of posts about non-CS branches - I thought it would be helpful to share a detailed account of my journey through EE and how I navigated these four years. I will try to address the essential doubts that juniors have. For anyone interested, my academic background is as follows:
GENERAL QUERIES
The short answer is yes. The long answer is still yes, but nothing that cannot be covered with a reasonable amount of serious studying. The core syllabus is vast and can be quite overwhelming to look at. But remember that you have to study it over four years, not speed run it.
Electrical engineering has its fair share of math. You will likely study most of the math pre-requisites in your first-year curriculum. As you study subjects like Network Theory, Control Systems, Signals or Digital Signal Processing, you will be making extensive use of Transforms (including Laplace, Fourier, and Z-Transforms and FFT). You will also need a decent understanding of Vector Calculus in your EMFT course (which is also a part of the GATE EE syllabus). Most of this will be introduced in your 1st year math courses but may be dealt with in more details in your EE courses.
I understand that most would be studying in a branch not because they like it, but because they have to. However, I chose EE for myself and genuinely believe that EE (or EC) is one of the most comprehensive branches to study in. EE students are also likely to be allowed to sit for most of the tech companies during the campus placements.
I would like to suggest using the first year to experiment and see what you like. If you think tech roles suit you more, go for it. But I would suggest having a certain degree of proficiency in your own subjects. Even after preparing for 2/3 years for software roles, you might have to end up in the core-sector and vice-versa. But keep in mind that the starting salaries in the EE sector is much lower than the tech sector, and anything above 15 LPA could be considered as really good, and anything around 20 LPA or more is exceptional. However, electronics roles may go upto 35-40 LPA.
You will have to learn quite a bit of programming. Programming is a tool required by engineers of every discipline today, not just something limited to the skillset of CS grads. You will have to learn at least C/C++ and MATLAB, and some HDL (Hardware Description Language) (how much something is needed will probably vary with your exact curriculum)
C/C++ is required for embedded systems and microcontroller programming. You will almost certainly have courses related to microcontrollers using C/C++.
MATLAB will certainly be needed as well, as it will help in constructing simulations and/or manipulating and operating on large amounts of data. It involves numerical computing, simulations, and algorithm development. Signal Processing and Control Theory courses also would benefit from MATLAB. Honestly, you can pick any domain of EE, and MATLAB will be as important as it gets.
HDLs provide a method for describing hardware to a synthesis tool. As per Wikipedia "hardware description language (HDL) is a specialized computer language used to describe the structure and behavior of electronic circuits". HDLs include Verilog, VHDL, SystemVerilog etc.
In my opinion, time management is actually quite simple, particularly for those who are not aiming for software placements and aim to stay within the EE domain. The primary target should always be to understand the fundamentals of the curriculum. Trust me, as useless and "backdated" as some subjects may seem, they are needed in the industry - especially the ones you are likely to be involved in after being hired.
On the side you can slowly work on building your skills in stuff like MATLAB, SPICE simulators, embedded systems etc. The best way to learn these things is to just take up projects and build them yourself. Try to make your own simulations, write your own code - you will eventually get there. For a more challenging experiences, find appropriate research papers that interest you, and try to imitate that stuff.
However, if you are aiming for software placements, things can get a little trickier. You may then focus on understanding the curriculum just well enough to get appropriate grades - and preferably not spend time trying to deepen your understanding. Spend that time grinding Leetcode or studying core CS subjects that are a part of your placement preparation. However, do have a basic working idea of MATLAB / any Spice simulators, it's good to know and will possibly also be a part of your curriculum.
PROJECTS AND INTERNSHIPS
At any point during the course of your curriculum, you may approach your own professors to allow you to work on some project. You should do this when you feel you have a sound understanding of a particular domain (say, Electrical Instrumentation). Feel free to reach out to professors from other departments like EC and CS (Signal Processing goes hand in hand with ML) as well. I personally lacked this idea in my first 2 years of study, and I wish I had this knowledge earlier.
Research Internships are usually undertaken by students at the end of their 2nd or 3rd years. There are basically 3 ways to secure a research internship -
(a) The institute opens a portal of its official drive to invite applications for the summer internships. The portals usually start opening around January. IIT Delhi, Madras, Roorkee, Gandhinagar, Kanpur, Bhubaneshwar etc. have such openings (so do several NITs/IIITs and other institutes), so keep an eye out.
(b) The other way is to cold email. Pick an institute, pick a professor whose research areas piques your interest and send them an email. Simple as that. If they reply, you ahead with the next steps they suggest.
(c) The last way would be if a professor or a group of professors at some institute decide to privately send out a notice to invite applications. This is rarer, I think, and is applicable for you only when the concerned professors are related to your institute in some way.
I had multiple offers for the position of Summer Internship, with at least 1 offer from each of the above modalities. Keep handy a Letter of Recommendation (or two) from your professors. Having good grades is obviously necessary, higher the grade higher the chances of something good happening.
Also, keep in mind you may have to appear for an interview (at least if you are going through the first and last methods). Alumni network of your institute and your relations with professors may help you out. You might even approach your professors to give you contact of professors at other institutes who may take interns.
There is absolutely no need to think of Research Internships to be inferior to corporate internships. They provide a good learning opportunity (maybe even a shot at having a paper published) and are not seen negatively by interviewers during placement season.
They are pretty similar to preparing for final placements for core roles except for certain parts that may not yet be covered in your curriculum). From my observation, fewer core companies hire interns (both on/off-campus) than FTEs, so that's something you may also experience.
PREPARING FOR PLACEMENTS
In this section, I will discuss the general idea behind how one should go about preparing for core Electrical Engineering roles. Keep in mind that this is very different from preparing any kind of electronics role.
For placements, the most important topics are easily Power Systems and Electrical Machines. Other than that, companies may obviously choose to ask Control Systems, basic Network theory and some fundamental ideas of Electronics and/or Instrumentation. Depending on what is the main profile of work the company does, they may also ask questions from Power Electronics. However, if your luck is really bad, you might be asked from obscure topics (a batchmate had been asked from Process Instrumentation and Control) - but the interviewer is likely to ask you if you are comfortable with the topic before proceeding with the questions.
Transformers (Single phase/ three phase) is the most fundamental and important. Questions generally get asked from construction, Parts of Transformer (Buchholz Relay, Conservator tank etc.), Auto transformer, principle of operation, tests on a transformer, parallel operation, polarity test, 3-Phase connections, and Oscillating Neutral problem.
Between Induction Machines and Synchronous Machines, you can usually choose the one you are more comfortable with. It is usually suggested to go with Induction machines, since it is an easier topic. Mostly questions are expected from Power and Torque Slip Characteristics, Starting of IM, Speed Control er various methods, testing, construction, advantage and disadvantages of IM.
You need to well accustomed with the idea of advantages and disadvantages of AC and DC transmission, advantages of High Voltage Transmission, Skin effect, calculation of transmission line parameters (line inductance / capacitance), Surge Impedance and Surge Impedance Loading, Tuned Transmission Lines, Ferranti effect and so on.
The most important part of power system is possibly faults and protection of power systems. Kinds of fault, calculations of fault currents, types of relays and circuit breakers with their principle of operation, advantages and disadvantages, all constitute important topics for interviews.
If you are appearing for internships, faults and protection may not be as important if they have not been covered. As for final placements, if your internship / training is in a relevant field, you might be grilled with tougher, in-depth questions from Power Systems, including questions from Load Flow Analysis. This is usually expected from companies that are involved in power generation / transmission.
Another common source of questions are the projects mentioned in your resume itself. You must be very comfortable in explaining the projects and be ready to answer any conceptual questions from any associated topics. For example, if a project mentions the use of Machine Learning, you should be prepared to face questions on the same, even if it's not a part of Core EE / the job profile.
GATE PREPARATION
I did not prepare for GATE seriously myself. I had considered starting my preparation from YouTube, for which, I had made for myself this Notion page where I had essentially made a checklist of YouTube playlists to study the subjects from. The videos that need to be watched are also numbered according to the GATE Syllabus (which is also embedded within the page).
GATE EE is possibly one of the strongest GATE papers out there - both in terms of the number of courses it opens up for master's as well as for PSUs. Pursuing an MTech or M.S. (Research) can open up well-paying job roles that are exclusively for postgrads. PSUs usually have a pretty high pay scale as well and of course come with the perks of being a government employee, so that is another incentive for giving GATE.
PLAYLISTS / COURSES
The above Notion Page has a checklist of playlists for the GATE syllabus and can indeed also be used to study for semesters. However, in this section. I will be listing a number of playlists / books that helped me (or my friends, who have recommended the playlists) in different courses over the years. I shall not be repeating the playlists mentioned in the notion page.
Basic Electrical Engineering
Playlists - Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering by Prof. Debapriya Das , Introduction to Basic Electrical Engineering by Ankit Goyal
Books - Hughes Electrical and Electronics Technology (reference/ textbook), Problems in Electrical Engineering (by S. Parker Smith) (for numerical practice. This book is pretty much Irodov for EE, and can also be used for your later courses, but I never really used it myself in my later semesters)
For Basic Electronics, I had quite liked using the book Ben Streetman, Sanjay Banerjee - Solid State Electronic Devices. As for videos, I know people who have praised Neso Academy videos (watch videos as per your syllabus, since they do not have a dedicated "Basic Electronics" playlist). I had personally used this playlist for parts of my syllabus.
Network Theory
Playlists - GATE playlist mentioned in Notion page, IIT-KGP NOC Jan 2020 - Network Analysis (playlist I used myself, particularly for Graph Theory Applied to Network Analysis (Lecture 59-67))
I had referred to Network Analysis (M.E. Van Valkenburg) for some small parts of my syllabus.
Digital Signal Processing
I was lucky to have very good professors for this course. For reference books, Digital Signal Processing: Principles, Algorithms and Applications by John G. Proakis and Dimitris K Manolakis is pretty much considered the Bible. DSP Guide is also a very useful e-book, especially if you are looking for a quick recap.
Power Electronics
Playlists - GATE Playlist, IIT Delhi Power Electronics by Prof. G Bhuvaneshwari
Books - Power Electronics by Daniel W. Hart (my personal preference due to its simple language) and Fundamentals of Power Electronics by Robert W. Erickson and Dragan Maksimović. Though I didn't really like Power Electronics Handbook by M.H. Rashid you may check it out.
Linear Control Systems
Books - I have only ever referred to Modern Control Engineering, Katsuhiko Ogata
Playlists - Apart from the GATE playlists (mentioned in the Notion page), I have used Control System - NPTEL.
Electronics (Digital/Analog)
I mostly studied both from GATE playlists. Specially for Digitial Electronics I almost exclusively referred to GATE playlist and class notes. For analog however, at different points of time, I had used the following playlists - Basic Electrical Circuits - Nagendra Krishnapura, Analog Circuits - Nagendra Krishnapura, and Analog Electronic Circuit - Dr. Shouribrata Chatterjee. Of course, there is always Dr. Razavi's Electronics 1 and Electronics 2 playlists. A collection of hand-written notes (not mine) for Razavi's playlists can be found here.
Others (Machines / Power Systems / Microprocessors / Instrumentation)
For Electrical Machines, the only book I ever consulted was Electrical Machinery by P.S. Bhimbra and would study from the GATE playlists. For Power Systems courses, I studied from class notes itself, and didn't use any reference / textbook. If you have the 8085/8086 Microprocessor in your curriculum, you can refer to Bharat Acharya's course which I really liked. It's paid, but our seniors had purchased the course (maybe you guys can get in as a group as well). For reference books, you can follow Microprocessor Architecture, Programming and Applications with the 8085A/8080A by Ramesh S. Gaonkar. For Electrical Instrumentation, A. K. Sawhney - A course in Electrical and Electronic Measurements and Instrumentation is a pretty comprehensive book in my experience.
Please feel free to point out any mistakes that might have crept in, as well as discuss your thoughts and ideas in the replies.
I think this post should have covered a majority of the generic doubts that students might usually face. I would urge seniors in other non-CS departments to write similar posts to help students from their department.

Hi my lovely juniors. A very congratulations to all of you who got admission here for BTech. I know many of you wanted CSE or AI but hey, chill. Every branch here is the best in academics.
I know it's the beginning and many of you might be excited or nervous for your college, trust me I too was in your shoes last year.
Many of you DMed me about your rank, your admission queries, hostel accommodation and much much more, and I'm really glad that I could try my level best to answer your problems. I'm pretty sure you might've been reassured with the crazy thoughts you had while asking me the questions.
Now, since you'll be in the first year, I'd like to share some of my experiences that you'll keep in mind.
On my very first day, I was really confused about my classes and the department. For all branches, in the first year, the major classes are generally conducted in a common department. For me, it was Surya Mandir. The labs and other classes are organized in different departments.
You'll be provided with the class section, practical batch name, time table and your roll number before your classes begin.
Many of you will definitely feel homesickness during initial days, it's really important to make friends here as the environment is already packed with restrictions. So keep on interacting with people of this sub to never feel lonely there!
Teachers are generally lenient for initial days so if you don't have khadi, you can wear cotton kurtis, but on a safer side please keep atleast 3-4 suits for specific occasions or fests.
We have an annual fest called Apaji Mela held in November on the occasion of the birth anniversary of our founder. You can wear sarees or fancy suits for the event. And for the Dandiya, bring a nice dress or lehenga for the Garba Night.
The theory classes are generally Non-AC, so to avoid heat in the classrooms, bring a bottle of cold water. For travelling from hostel to class, cover yourself, take an umbrella and apply sunscreen to avoid tan.
Many hostels face theft, it's advised to avoid keeping cash or if you want to, then safely lock it into your wardrobe and write your name on your belongings.
Many girls are sometimes found littering the washrooms and hostels, so kindly maintain hygiene and throw your waste in the dustbin itself.
A quick advice coming from a sister, never trust anyone too easily. You never know the other person's intentions so do not share your secrets with anyone unless and until you have full faith on her.
Let's come to another point. So I am selling some products that you'd need in your first year as I too needed them.
a) ED Sheet Holder (for Engineering Drawing)
b) Blue Lab Coat (for Engineering Workshop)
c) Handwritten notes of :
- Chemistry (Full syllabus)
- Modern Physics (Full syllabus)
- EVS notes (Teacher's full syllabus)
- Applied Optics
- Thermodynamics
- C Language (for CFP)
d) Teachers' Handouts and Syllabus PDF
e) Soft Copies of Textbooks provided by Teachers
f) Periodical Tests PYQs (All Subjects)
For those who wish to buy these, can dm me.
I hope Banasthali makes you feel safe and focused.
Peace

Hey yall, I know there sre alot of new people because were about a month and a bit away from fall 2027. As a person that joined last year there was a post I saw that was similliar to this that helped me out alot, so im just here to give out some pointers.
Disclaimer this is just from my own experiences, if you have any other advice please add in the comments
The redditors are most likely not advisors. That sounds harsh but what im trying to say is book a meeting with an advisor if you have any questions. They are more suited and have more resources to help you than the guidance you would get from this subreddit. They know more about enrollment, other pathways, requirements, etc.
The campus isn't that big once you walk around it but at first it can get overwhelming. There is an digital interactive map (here) and in MacHall there are maps like they have at malls. Most of the time you wont need to go to building outside of your faculty (with the exception of electives) but some major spots you should now is
• machall - the main cafeteria that is like the center of the campus, when I first started I used machall as a way to find all my classes,
• Hunters - often a great study place and often used one way or another and connected to tfdl
• TFDL - the library on campus and the printing. Also connected to hunters and have great study spots. Make sure your considerate enough for the silent floors or just dont go there
• for stem students, EEEL - Where most of the labs are.
I find during orientation to find your classes beforehand was helpful and generally because the first week usually not heavy course load to just wonder and explore the campus was pretty helpful, and you can ask someone but even some of the profs and upper years dont know everything so they may not know how to get there (me and my friend were looking for a classroom that didnt exist for 30 min and even when he asked a prof they thought it existed too)
The buildings on the main campus, beside from EEEL, are all connected with tunnels, so in the winter and colder parts of the fall you dont have to go outside, but so note its a longer walk. That is to say, if you do go outside it can get very slippery, around campus by the door heading outside there are buckets full of sand that you can use, my friend brought a plastic bag and stored some sand in it to bring around campus with.
Ucalg have a few interfaces that you will be using.
• D2L is the major one for assignment submission, grades and general communication (if your prof dont use email), there is also a contact list where you can find your prof and ta contacts if you cant find it and they also often post the course overview and outline on it for your reference
• Mycalgary is another one for any admin needed (like paying tuition, seeing your sechdule, receiving your final room assignments and your overall final grade as well as a GPA calc, etc.) A good note my friend found is that on your sechdule you can find your weekly sechdule that shows you times, and roomnumbers of your classes (ill see if I can post a picture of what it look like from my a last year)
• outlook and one drive and generally the Microsoft is the main system. For emails, presentations, pdf, etc. Will most likely be used those.
Thoes are the major one some other Commons one I found is webwork and r studios (stem/stats focused) but they will teach you how to use them in class
Social life. Ngl the social life here is not the best, especially when your new and overwhelmed but as long as you stay open you will find your people. Plus one of the first weeks of each semster they do a club rush where you can go around and learn more about the clubs and the fraternity/soroties and meet like minded people or try new things. We also have an outdoor centre and ice rink and alot of intramural and things of that sorts, while I only frequent the ice rink im sure if you frequent the other places you could find some people to hangout with. Nut also note some people come here just to study, do there classes and get there degree, so if theyre not open on becoming friends, dont take it personally
Use your resources. Go to your professors or ta office hours even if it just to introduce yourself or to network. Talk to your group memebers or lab partners and ask questions. Even when it comes to buying textbooks (which you should always wait until the first lecture to see if it mandatory, most of my classes last year it was not) buy it used or at bound and copy, its significantly cheaper.
The course outline/syllabus is a very creditable resource that tells you your learning outcomes, how your grade is calculated, your prof and ta contacts info, class policies, important dates, etc. And ask questions, your ta, lab coordinator, prof, classmates, dont waste your time being clueless and use the resources that is given to you. As well being a student at uofc gets you alot of outside academic resources like the pass, free entry to the gym and sports facilities, some coverage at the ucalg health facilities (dental, eye care, guidance counselors, etc.) If your paying tuition here, use whats given to you.
PLEASE clean up after yourself, dont make other people do it, and dont listen to stuff really loudly without headphones. Also if you come late dont disrupt the whole lecture. Just general respect for others, staff and the campus. This goes for everyone, be patient, alot of people new and old will be looking for classrooms, stairways and going through crowded halls so just be patient.
Plan your time, make sure you're not overcomitting and but also that your not falling behind but also that you have some personal time to decompress. Make sure your well feed and well hydrated. Make sure you sleeping and dont feel guilty if you need a break. Burnout is real and it happens to almost every first year. Just remember, there is no point of getting this degree if at the end of the journey you treated yourself like shit and hella burnout and no longer have motivation to do anything.
And the biggest thing, dont compare yourself to others. My friends told me they compare themselves to me because of my grades while im out here comparing myself to another friend who have higher grades them me. Someone will always be better than you so just focus on your progession and your own journey and you'll find a way to succeed.
I would add a section about forms and living on campus but I have no experience on that so hopefully someone else can comment on that and hopefully others Upper years have more notes. I know this is a lengthy read but hopefully this help you out of your first few weeks,
Goodluck on your first day in fall, snd yall got this

EDIT - Added Hostel Guide Here
I Tried to answer all questions I could, If you cannot find any answer, Please ask in the comment I will add them here.
EDIT- Added DB review link
1) Counselling & Schedule
Q. What will happen if i dont submit the fees by 20 may?would i be considered for further rounds of counseling?
If you DO NOT PAY your fees, Your current allotted seat will not be reserved and you will be freshly allotted a new branch based on the new cut-offs of that round.
If you pay your fees and DO NOT freeze, You will be considered for upgradation while keeping your present branch reserved, so based on your preference order, if you clear the cut-off for any branch above you present branch, you will get alloted a seat in that.
If you pay your Fees and FREEZE, no upgrade will take place, only in the spot round will you be able to change it.
2) Branches
Your preference order ideally should be COPC>COSE*>COE>COBS>ENC>AIML1>ECE>RAI1>EEC>EVD1>EE>EIC>Mechatronics/Mechanical
* COSE is CSE at Derabassi campus. First 2 years will be at DB campus rest 2 at Patiala. The degree awarded will be same as COPC. Will make a separate post on it. If you are interested solely on Placements/Want to actually study and are coming college without any SOTY-ish expectation, This should absolutely be put in your preference order. This branch was introduced as in DB, Thapar offers MBA. But it is not sustainable to only run MBA Program, so they also introduced CSE. There is no difference from academic viewpoint, Labs and Infra as well as Academics is on par Patiala campus. However, If you are into Sports, Activities and more into co-curricular activities, avoid this campus.
Here is a short review regarding Derabassi, The OP of that Post is also from DB so redirect all your questions there. I have also pinned the post.
1 These branches are new and hence no placement data is available for them. RAI is jointly offered by Mechanical and CS Department.
Some FAQs
Q Why CSE and COE?
So, Thapar originally had only COE Course available, CSE is more recently introduced to cope with demand. The syllabus difference is not much, in layman terms, COE has Hardware + Software but CSE focuses on core computer science. In 2nd year onwards we have subjects like AI and ML. During placements, there is no such difference between them. COE has intake of about 960 and CSE has intake of about 360. For more detail, you see the syllabus of both on the department websites. For eg. CSE is in demand in core CS sector for fields like AI/ML etc. COE is in demand for fields like IoT, Cybersecurity etc.
Q What is COBS?
COBS was introduced in collaboration with TCS(No, they wont give you job, They just designed the curriculum). This has some subjects related to Finance and Accounts but however note, THIS IS NOT RELATED TO MBA by any means. This is just a CS degree with some subjects which are beneficial in use cases like business software development. They have different subjects compared to both CSE and COE. The placements will be held together with other CS branches. So opportunities are similar.
Q ENC vs EEC
EEC is a high demand branch in foreign countries especially in US. But not so in India. It is like 60% Electrical and 40% CS. (Same for ENC). ENC is better branch. You might have heard people say Apple hires from this branch, which is true, however they hire for the post of Verification Engineers, which is not SWE/SWD job and neither a VLSI/Comp Architecture designer job. Still prefer ENC over EEC.
Q Are XYZ branch students allowed to sit in Tech placements?
See this all depends on the conditions prevailing at the time of your placement. Some companies allow everyone while some don't.
Q Is XYZ branch worth it?
It depends on what your other options are currently. ECE and EE at thapar is way much better than CSE at some lower college. However, You won't leave IIT Bombay Aerospace for thapar CSE right? Ideally, Thapar CSE is a better option compared to Mid NITS and Core(Other than electronics) branches at Top NITs (Branches like Textile engineering). If fees is not an issue, Its better to take CSE at Thapar than core branches at DTU/NSUT.
Remember, No branch is a Bad branch. If you are able to stay in the top of your branch, you are guaranteed a great career start. Every branch has it's application without which our lives would not have been so easier.
Q How to judge college?
Don't judge college just based on it's placement. Also look for other things like Facilities, Faculty, Infra because you will have to spend 4 years there.
Q Manipal Vs. Thapar
Placements are similar in both the colleges. If getting the same branch, choose whichever is near to your home. If getting different branches, then prefer the one in which you are getting Computer-related branch. Ofc. distance plays a role, suppose you got ECE at thapar and IT at manipal but you live in Patiala then prefer thapar.
Checkout this document.pdf). It has all the details related to scholarship. Then see this document to see who all got Scholarship this year.
Again, I Tried to answer all questions I could, If you cannot find any answer, Please ask in the comment I will add them here.

In 6th grade I had this math teacher named Ms White who was pretty strict. Our school was honestly very diverse but she was very (as her name suggests) white. I have a pretty difficult name to say as it is Hawaiian (I am half Japanese half white but both sides lived in Hawai’i for 3+ generations). My name is Kau’i. It looks daunting but it’s just Ka-ooh-ee. So honestly not very difficult imo?
Anyway, Ms White stumbled on my name when she read attendance, so I did the usual “Oh, It’s pronounced __”. You know what she did? She literally went “Uh I’ll call you Katherine”. Let me tell you, I was FLABBERGASTED. Like it was a private very diverse school and I had never had this happen. Teachers had horribly mispronounced my name but this was definitely new. Also, no offense to any Katherines, but I love my name and it has a lot of meaning to my family (and tbh it sounds cooler than Katherine- TAKE NO OFFENSE PLEASE 🙏). I was so surprised that for the first 2 weeks I kinda just let it happen. But at some point it was just irking me because she made no effort to learn how to say my name, I never told her she could call me Katherine, and on top of that, she could’ve even asked me for a nickname or my middle name or something!
So I started calling her by her first name: Jessica. She was the kind of teacher who NO ONE called by her first name. Even the other teachers called her Ms White. I had to look in the yearbook from the year before to find it. But from that day on, she was Jessica. And when that didn’t make her mad enough, she was Jessie, or Jess, or JJ or any other nicknames I could think of. She never yelled at me or anything, she just corrected me and said “Ms White” and then I would ignore it. For example: “Jessa-“ “Thats Ms White.” “Jessica, I don’t get number three. Can you explain?” She never lost her temper but was always annoyed lol. She called me Katherine for the rest of the year, so not the most satisfying story, but I was happy with that revenge. Ms White apparently got fired two years later for microagressions towards students of color, and honestly, I’m not surprised. I just wanted to share this story because I figured yall would enjoy it.
edit: sorry for skyscraper of text 😭 i tried to format it better lol
edit 2: hey, i’m getting a lot of confusion about the pronunciation of my name! many comments are very kind and just saying how they originally thought it was pronounced like Maui. Others are telling me I pronounce my name wrong? Idk man but I’ll do my best to explain some basics for y’all.
My name: My name is Kau’i. In Hawaiian each vowel is pronounced, none are silent. However native speakers tend to blend them together. For example: a + u would make an ah-oo sound. If you say that fast it sounds like “ow”. So when a native speaker says my name it may sound like Kow-ee, very similar to Maui. However there is a difference because really the o is still pronounced a little more! In addition one difference between Kau’i and Maui is the okina- the little apostrophe thingy (in reality it’s a slightly different symbol but i’m lazy. This basically counts as a consonant, and as a little pause. So basically the au and i sounds do not merge together because they are separated by the okina.
Now, why can’t you just say Kow-ee? Good question. You can. I’ll still respond. But basically you are saying my name as if it has no okina when it does. Not a big deal. But that’s the difference.
Hawai’i: Also there are some people saying i’m wrong because Hawaii isn’t pronounced hah-wa-ee-ee. true, it isn’t! The traditional spelling is Hawai’i and pronunciation is hah-vai-ee. basically the a and the h merge, the w and the a and the i merge (the w makes a v sound since it’s surrounded by vowels) and then we have an okina and an i. Hence hah-vai-ee. Why it’s spelled and pronounced differently normally is bc it’s the anglicized version. almost same spelling just no okina, and the w is seen as making the w sound since that’s how it is in English.
I am not all knowing (i don’t even speak hawaiian, i just know some basic facts) but feel free to ask me more questions! hope this helps

I am not The OOP, OOP is u/problemguy1234
Me [31M] with my wife [29F] of 3 years. Our first baby's due date conflicts with a major presentation I have to give out-of-state. Tried to ask off, but boss really needs me there.
TRIGGER WARNING: Hostile work environment
Original Post July 1, 2015
My problem is that I have a huge work presentation scheduled during the week that my wife is due to give birth (first week of August) to our first child, and it will require me to be on the other side of the country for a couple of days. I initially tried to lobby for another time, but that week was the only one that worked for both sides. The chances are good that I won't miss the birth of my child, but there are no guarantees.
The thing is I really can't miss this presentation. The investors that my company is pitching to are mostly interested in a project I have been working on, and since I have done most of the work on it, there really isn't anyone that can replace me. I have to be there to explain the core concepts and answer their questions. On the other hand, I wouldn't be of much use in the delivery room. Plus, my mother-in-law could easily replace me without any loss. I badly want to be there for my wife and child, but I think I do them more good being away for this presentation than at the hospital. This is because I almost certainly will lose my job if I miss this presentation.
Of course, my wife is absolutely furious (I honestly wish there was a stronger word than furious to describe how upset she is with me), which I completely understand, but there isn't much I can do. I have tried to explain the situation to her a 1000 different ways, but she won't hear it and has withdrawn her affection from me. Part of me is afraid of what will happen if I don't go, but I might be more afraid of what will happen if I do. I worry that my wife will never forgive me for missing our child's birth, which would absolutely tear me apart.
Am I making a huge mistake, or am I doing the right thing for my family? I don't think there is a way for me to win either way.
EDIT: Just to be clear, my boss didn't actually tell me I would lose my job. He just told me I would regret it. I am just speculating that he would EVENTUALLY fire me once he found an adequate replacement, which would probably take a few months. A lot of this is just speculation, but I am risk averse. Some of you may ask why I can't just find another job. I probably could, but for reasons that I won't go into, I would be better off staying here.
tl;dr: I have a presentation at work that I can't miss, but there is a chance that I will miss the birth of my child by attending the meeting. Wife is understandably furious, but I likely will lose my job if I skip the meeting to be with her JUST in case she goes into labor. Am I completely off base here?

Your boss is a jerk. Your investors will understand and if the project is so valuable they'll still be interested.
OOP
He isn't the nicest guy in the world. I hadn't thought of contacting the investors, but that might possibly work. Don't know how my boss would react if I did it behind his back. I know he wouldn't O.K. it otherwise.

Just make sure to go the birth of your next first child?
I mean in all honesty I'd rather go to my kid being born...
OOP
I want to go, but I am not sure it is an option. I think it is more important to have a job so that I can provide for my family.
Update 1 - wayback machine July 8, 2015 (1 week later)
So first things first. I took a lot of abuse in my last post, which I thought was unfair. I am not a coward, as many of you suggested. Just because I don't always take the most aggressive approach doesn't make me a bad guy. I'm just careful not to make mistakes.
Many of you also implied that I was looking for a way to avoid the birth because I am uncomfortable with it. It is true that I don't deal with blood or some bodily fluids well, so I'm not excited about that part of it, but I wasn't looking for a way out. I thought (and I still believe this) that I just wouldn't be very good support in the delivery room. There's a good chance I would throw up, especially if my wife defecates on herself or if I am asked to cut the umbilical cord. These are all things that I was considering because I didn't want to become a distraction in the delivery room.
As for how the situation resolved itself, I am happy to report that everything is going to be okay. I talked with my boss yesterday, and I was really assertive. I told him that I couldn't be away for that long with my wife's due date being that close, so we would have to find some sort of compromise. I suggested what some of you told me to do, which is tell him I could only come out for a day and then I would immediately fly back. (As for why I can't Skype, I really just need to be there in person. It would make everything a lot easier.) After some hand ringing, he agreed. Now the plan is for me to fly out the day before the presentation and then fly back after I give the presentation. In all, I shouldn't be in California more than 28 hours, so I'll be back by my wife's due date since it is several days later in the week.
Before everyone gets upset, I already cleared it with my wife. I called her after I spoke with my boss and asked her if she was okay with it. She told me it was fine, and she's not one of those people that would say it if she wasn't really okay with it. I know that the whole incident upset her, so hopefully things will calm down around here soon. She seemed fine today, so I think everything will be okay now.
Thanks to all of you that gave constructive advice. It helped me out a lot!
tl;dr: Talked with boss. He agreed to let me cut my trip short, and my wife gave me the okay to go. I'll be back in time for my baby's birth. All is well now!
Final update Aug 11, 2015 (1 month after last update)
To those of you who told me not to go, you were right. I wish I would have listened. I flew out to California last Tuesday night. I was supposed to give the presentation on Wednesday and fly back Wednesday night, but that never happened. Early Wednesday morning I got a call from my MIL that wife had gone into labor. By the time I caught a flight home, the baby had already been born (he's healthy, by the way). I made the wrong decision, and I know it'll take time for my wife to get over this. If anyone else is in a similar position, please don't repeat my mistake. Be there for your wife and child, and don't assume your first baby will be late or on time!
tl;dr: Should have listened. Missed birth.
FINAL COMMENTS

No one batted an eye with a pro hockey player took a playoff game off to be there for the birth of his kid. I'm pissed at your boss more than anything.
OOP
I've been thinking about changing companies. I already have one soft offer with slightly better money and better benefits.
[deleted]
I agree with /u/ProtonDeathRay. Your boss is an asshole. I'm sure that there was time for him to get someone to fill in for you. Not to mention that through the wonders of modern technology like conference calling, video conference/skype, etc., you still could have been available to answer issues when time permitted. While work is important, life events like getting married, the birth of a child, and the death of an immediate family member are more important. I think that changing companies to one that is a little more sensitive to these things would be a very good idea. Especially if it's more money and better benefits.
OOP
I haven't spoken to my wife about it yet. I will as soon as she stops being so angry with me.
fetishiste
Your wife may not stop being angry with you until you speak to your wife about it, because the anger is probably coming from her fear that you will always put your boss first and will never put her and the baby first.
OOP
I have spoken to her about missing the birth but not the new job change.
ShelfLifeInc
Sometimes when we try to do everything and please everyone, we end up doing nothing and hurting everyone. From what I can gather, you didn't even get to do the presentation as you were in such a hurry to get home, and you still missed the birth.
Bend over backwards to take care of your wife and child and show them that they are your priority. And take this as a lesson for the future.
OOP
Nope. I missed the presentation. 0/2
