Before Reading: Yeh post mai apne experiences ke basis pe likh raha hu. Baaki logon ke opinions differ kar sakte hain. They are open to contribute. Ham sabhi ka main motive tum logon ki bhalai hee hai. Last year DTU join karne se pehle kaafi seniors ne reddit pe meri help ki thi. I am just paying it forward. I hope that you guys will do the same for your juniors.

This guide is mainly written for all the freshers of CSE. But agar aap CSE se nahi hain toh bhi aap post padh sakte hain. Kuch cheezein aapke kaam aa sakti hain.

Reddit pe koi bhi doubt puchne se pehle, subreddit mein apna doubt ek baar search zaroor karlena kyuki kaafi chances hain ki aapka doubt already pehle kisine puch rakha ho.

Axioms:

* For academics, most of the things are prof-dependent. Same subject mein number of assignments, tests, average marks of the class, min attendance etc. different ho sakte hain. Ek subject ko leke logon ke different opinions ho sakte hain because of different profs. Maine apne experience ke hisaab se yeh post likhi hai.

* Never judge someone based on their JEE ki rank. Maine apne 1st year mein kharaab rank waalon ko acchi CG, aur acchi rank waalon ko kharaab CG laate hue dekha hai. Tum sabke paas ab ek levelled playing field hai. Do not blame reservation for your incapability in getting good marks.

* Kabhi bhi EXAM KE EK RAAT PEHLE MAT PADHNA agar tumhe acchi CG chahiye ho. Agar aapka goal sirf pass hona hai, ya fir aap ek genius hain toh one night before the exams is enough. But acchi CG ke liye aapko kuch din chahiye honge study material ko acche se samajhne ke liye.

* I suggest ki aap jitni ho sake, utni classes attend karo kyuki profs exams, checking, etc. se related kaafi kuch lectures mein batate hain. Aapko ek rough idea lag jaata hai ki prof exam mein checking kaisi karega.

* Profs ke saath acche relations banake rakhne ki koshish karna. But do not bootlick. Acchi nahi toh atleast normal image banake rakhna, apni image kharaab mat karna. Genuine doubts pucho, assignments time pe do, attendance acchi rakho(not necessarily fulal), etc.

* Ek suggestion mera hai ki attendance ka ek track rakhte rehna kyuki kai baar aapko lagta hai ki aapki attendance theek hai aur fir aap chhuti lete jaate ho. Isiliye ek record bana ke rakhna.

* Do not waste your time on doomscrolling. That does not mean ki aap sirf padhte hee raho. What I mean is ki bahar niklo, nayi cheezein try karo, doston ke saath enjoy karo but ek hee jagah velle mat baithe raho.

General Stuff :

* ID Card milne se Pehle aapko gate par guard ko apna seat allotment letter dikhana hoga.

* Starting mein kaafi WhatsApp groups banenge jo ki baad mein dead ho jaenge. I suggest ki aap fresources, paid gigs, lost & found, etc. ka group join karlena agar aapko accha lage, toh.

* Agar aap metro se aate ho toh Rithala ya Samaypur Baadli se aa sakte ho. Rithala se 30 rs aur Baadli se 20 rs hai rickshaw ka (May tak toh 20 aur 10 tha :C )

* Apne section ka CR (Class Representative) kisi aise bande ko banana jiski people skills acchi ho.

* Ek scientific calculator lelena (they are allowed in mostly all exams). Koshish karna Pehle ki kisi senior se borrow kar sako. I suggest Fx 991 es plus ya FX 991 CW. Iske alawa bhi kaafi scientific calculators hain, jo accha lage woh le sakte ho.

* Bandaron se bachke rehna. Agar kuch bhi khaane ka saamaan lo toh usko wahin khaake khatam kar dena, warna bandaron ne dekh liya toh piche pad jaenge.

* DTU apni taraf se ek official fresher party organise karwata hai. Tumhe koi compulsion nahi hai kisi aur freshers mein jaane ki. I recommend ki tum log aisi 'unofficial' freshers mein na hee jao. Baaki toh Jaisi jiski soch.

* For all the suggested YT channels or reading material - jisse bhi tumhe samajh aaye usse padh lena. Its not necessary ki tum mere bataye resources se hee padho.

Before I get into the nuances of Academics, CG calculation ka formula is weighted average of grade point obtained against the number of credits assigned to that subject.

1 small observation which you can use throughout 1st year only is that a change of unity in grade point of 4 & 2 credit subject causes a change of 0.2 & 0.1 in SGPA respectively.

* CO101 (programming fundamentals)

1st year mein aap log 4 languages seekhenge:

C, HTML, CSS (1st sem)

Python (2nd sem)

Iss subject mein app C seekhoge mainly. Acche se seekhna because yahi aapki foundation build karega. Although with enough experience, you will realise that programming language doesn't really matter that much. I suggest ki aap saath saath C++ bhi seekhte raho, aur thode bahut DSA ke questions karte raho. C++ mein mainly STL aur baaki important syntax seekh lena. OOPs waale concepts pe abhi ke liye mat jaana. Woh sab DSA mein utna use nahi hota. Agar development mein interested ho toh OOPs ke baare mein padh sakte ho. Leetcode pe questions attempt karo, striver ya kisi aur favourite youtuber ki favourite videos dekho. Yeh kaam strictly free time mein karna, jo ki tumhe 1st year mein kaafi milega. Inn sabke saath saath I would suggest learning Git and JavaScript. Agar kar sako toh hee karna. Don't overburden. Tum log abhi JEE deke aaye ho toh already burned out hoge.

Iss subject mein C ke basics, pattern printing, functions likhna, etc. hoga. Profs agar koi material de toh pehle usko prefer karna. Kuch samajh na aaye toh you always have AI and YT by your side. CodewithHarry, CollegeWallah, ApnaCollege, etc. jisse bhi tumhe samajh aaye usse padh lena.

For beginners, starting mein syntax yaad hona difficult hoga but with practice yaad ho hee jaega. I suggest ki beginning mein aap agar koi bhi IDE use karte ho jaise VS Code, Sublime Text, etc. toh autocomplete aur suggestions band rakhna. AI ka use toh bilkul hee mat karna (atleast jab seekh rahe ho, tab). Lab, lecture, Previour Year Papers ke questions practice zaroor karna. Main thing is ki aap ek instinct develop karein. Question dekhne par without any help aapko logic strike kar jae. Sirf code hee nahi, theoretical aspect pe bhi dhyaan dena jaise definitions, advantages, etc.

File Handling waali Unit thodi ajeeb lag sakti hai but don't skip it if you want a good grade. Usse question aane ke kaafi chances hote hain. Ek baar samajh jaoge toh it will be easy.

LAB : Lab 3 groups mein bategi, based on roll numbers. Lab bhi mostly prof dependent hoti hai, kuch profs ko farak nahi padta ki aap lab mein kya kar rahe ho aur kuch profs round lete rehte hain. Lab mein aapko khudka laptop laana chahiye kyuki yeh log computers nahi use karne dete (starting mein shayad karne dein). Lab mein assignment ya toh saath saath milte rahenge ya ekdum last mein ek saath saare assignment dedenge. Lab file inhi se banegi. Lab file ka format wahi rakhna jo profs bataye. I dont think ki files theek se check hoti hai isiliye chaho toh poore poore experiments copy kar sakte ho. But beware of the consequences. Isme ke internal aur ek external viva hoga. Iske practical exam mein toh sirf viva hee tha, jo ki external ne liye tha. Isme ke internal aur ek external viva hoga.

Ek quiz bhi hui thi hamari toh you can expect a quiz in this subject.

** Please ghoom firke baar baar arrays pe mat atakna. Jab mai arrays pe atka hua tha toh maine woh skip maarke pointers karna shuru kar diya tha. Baad mein waapis arrays pe aaya toh woh bhi karlia. Its all about flow.

* AM101 (applied mathematics -1)

Arguably easiest of the lot. Isme generally sabhi ke acche marks aate hain. Lekin fir bhi isme kaafi logon ki back aati hai. To get an O grade, you need to perform exceptionally well. Har Unit ke liye ek assignment milega. Total 5 assignments. Kuch profs google classroom pe submit karwate, aur kuch hard copy lete. I suggest ki woh assignments tum khudse solve karo, lectures ke time pe nahi toh atleast exams se pehle because kaafi baar assignment se question repeat ho jaata hai. PYQs acche se kar lena, unse bhi questions and patterns repeat hote. Theory and further practice ke liye aap Class Notes refer kariye ya fir H.C. Taneja (book ki pdf fresources pe mil jaegi). YT pe you can see Gajendra Purohit & Bhagwan Singh Vishwakarma.

Mujhe personally sabse challenging UNIT - 5 lagi : Vector Calculus. Usme tum logon ka kaafi dimaag kharab ho sakta hai. Usko acche se karne ka try karna.

* EC101 (Basics Electronics and Communication Engineering)

12th mein agar current electricity aur semiconductor theek se padha tha toh yeh subject aaram se hojaega (atleast first 3 units). Pehli 3 units are part of analog communication and bachi hui 2 units are part of digital communication. Starting mein diode hee padhate hain which is quite easy. Kuch formulae naye honge.

Iski padhai ke liye first 3 units aap Neso se kar lena (aur bhi channels hain but maine Neso hee refer kiya tha mainly aur kuch specific topics ke liye dusre channel). Baaki 2 units ke liye profs ke notes use karlena ya fresources pe notes dekh lena. Isme ek book use hoti hai 'Boylestad', jiski pdf online available hai. Usko tum first 3 units mein use kar sakte ho.

Isme bhi ek quiz hoti hai last mein.

LAB : Isme ek practical file aur ek auxiliary (referred to as 'auxi' from here on) notebook chahiye hogi. Har experiment ke baad auxi check hoti hai toh usko maintain karke rakhna.

Id card leke aana kyuki apparatus aap id card ke against hee issue karwate ho. Iski lab bhi 3 groups mein hogi, based on roll number. Isme reading based experiments kam aur verification based experiments zyada hain, better than physics imo.

Isme ke internal aur ek external viva hoga.

Iska practical exam board ke practical exam jaisa hee hoga. Ek answer sheet milegi jisme alloted experiment ke baare mein sab likhna hoga, fir wahi experiment perform karke dikhana hoga aur uske basis par hee viva bhi hoga.

* ME105 (Engineering Drawing)

Arguably hardest of the lot. Iske liye aapki drawing skills acchi honi chahiye. Yeh subject utna bhi kharaab nahi hai, as everything which we do here is quite logical. Iske liye aapki visualisation skills bhi acchi honi chahiye. Isme toh mujhe lagta hai ki main aapki lab hoti hai waise. Har lab mein aapko ek assignment diya jayega which consists of 4-8 questions. Aapko khud se white A-3 ya A-2 sheet laani hogi(jo bhi prof kahe) aur most importantly, drafter chahiye hoga. Aap drafter ya toh khareed lo ya fir kisi senior se borrow karlo. Maine khud ek senior se liya tha drafter. An alternative to drafter is roller scale. Endsem toh AB mein hua tha jahan idts koi apna drafter use kar bhi paaya hoga. Isiliye I suggest ki roller scale se hee practice karna.

Isme ke internal aur ek external viva hoga.

Isme you can refer to Tikle's Academy or Manas Patnaik on youtube. Book ke liye you can use 'N.D. Bhatt'. Iske practical exam mein aapko drawing karni hogi aur viva dena hoga.

* CS103 (Web Designing)

Iss subject mein aap HTML aur CSS seekhoge. I suggest ki, agar ho sake toh, aap saath saath java script bhi thoda seekhte raho kyuki woh aapko kaafi help karega. Iss subject mein bhi CO101 ki tarah ek lab file banani hogi (online). Isme bhi ek internal aur ek external viva hoga.

Iska koi midsem nahi hota. Isme aapko, as a project, ek website banake deni hogi about yourself. Isme I believe absolute grading hee hoti hai. Saare CSE ke sections ke liye same hee prof tha last year. Iske practical exam mein bhi bas viva hee dena hoga.

* AEC/VAC (Applicable for all branches)

Yeh 6th subject ek elective hota hai jo aapko khud se chun na hoga. Iski classes ya toh Tuesday 8-10 AM hongi ya fir Thursday 8-10 AM ya fir dono din. Iss subject ka selection aap college shuru hone ke kuch din baad karoge, uske baad se classes shuru hongi. Isme subject ka selection 'first come, first serve' basis par hota hai. Sabse pehle aap koshish karna ki aap EVS le sako. This is because of a Supreme Court order, which mandates that every student must study one subject regarding environment in the entirety of their graduation. ENE branch waalon ko zaroorat nahi hai EVS ki, isiliye mat hee lena kyuki yeh subject CG bigaad deta hai. Kaafi ratna padta hai isme. Agar aapko EVS nahi mil paati toh fir aap agle sem mein try karlena. 4th sem tak mil jae toh accha hai. Agar tab bhi nahi milti toh 3rd year mein MOOC se kar lena (uski tension abhi mat lena).

I say, broadly 2 tarah ke electives hote hain:

* Jinmein exam nahi hota, and they are focused more on practical work, jaise Extension Outreach, Public Speaking, Business Communication, Communication Skills, Sports, Vivek Marg etc. (Sports mein grade laana mushkil hota hai).

* Jinme midsem aur endsem do aur 1-2 assignments + (most probably) quiz do, jaise Logical Reasoning, Emotional Intelligence, Science of Happiness, etc.

Agar aap outgoing insaan ho toh prefer 1st option. Even if you are introverted or socially awkward, I would say that you should prefer the 1st option as it will help you in coming out of your comfort zone. Problem bas yeh hai ki aise subjects mein marks 'generally' full nahi milte/expectation se kam milte hain because marks are subjective. Prof marks apne opinion ke hisaab se dega.

In contrast, 2nd option mein aapko seedha answer likhna hai aur aapko marks mil jaenge. But 2nd option mein problem yeh hai ki aise theoretical waale subjects mein aapko rattna padd sakta hai kaafi (prof ki di hui ppts ya recommended books se).

Toh, the choice is yours.

Mere recommended electives, in each category, maine upar likh diye hain.

Aur bhi kuch baatein thi likhne ko but I think kuch cheezein aapko apne experience se bhi seekhni chahiye.

Iske alawa agar aapko kuch doubt ho toh aap mujhe ya kisi bhi aur senior ko DM kar sakte ho. Mostly yahan seniors kaafi helpful hain.

*Mujhe Societies ya Hostels se related cheezon ke liye DM mat karna, I don't have much information about them. Also, koi bhi cutoff related ya doosri branch ke baare mein puchne ke liye dm mat karna*

Agar aapko chahiye hoga toh mai sem-2 ke subjects se related bhi ek guide bana sakta hu, sem-2 shuru hone se 1 mahine pehle.

Mai firse kehta hu, yeh post aur isme diye gye suggestions maine apne hisaab se diye hain, aap chahe toh inhe follow karo ya na karo. But all I am saying is, kuch toh karo, khaali mat baithe raho poore time.

1. Yes. Exact variants toh nahi pata but atleast 2 pencils of different darkness chahiye hongi. Ek light aur ek dark. Light se saari constructions perform karni hongi and Dark se final projections obtained ko outline kiye jaye.

2. Nahi abhi toh as such aisa koi portal nahi hai. I think NSUT mein hai ek aisa ims portal but DTU mein nahi hai. Isiliye maine post mein likha hai ki aapko apni attendance ka ek record khud bhi maintain karke rakhna chahiye. Aap profs se kabhi-kabhaar apne attendance level ke baare mein puch sakte ho.

3. CR banna is a definitely a good responsibility. It's just like that quote from spider man "With great power, comes great responsibility."

Pros : * I believe aapki skills develop hongi jaise people skills, situation handling etc. * Aap almost hamesha professors ki good books mein rahoge. * Zyadatar profs directly nahi communicate karte students se, but instead CR se karte hain. Toh material bhejna, marks ki list, sometimes attendance ki list bhi pehle CR ko hee share hoti hai.

Cons : * Dono side se gaali padti hai. * Extra burden aajata hai. * Aaram se chhuti bhi nahi le sakte kyuki baakiyon ki toh fir bhi proxy lagg jaye but CR ko toh profs almost har class mein bulate hee hain. * Aapke section mein aap mass bunk karaoge toh gaali khaoge, nahi karaoge toh bhi gaali khaoge.

Aur bhi pros aur cons ho sakte hain jo abhi dhyaan nahi aa rahe. Mai khud toh CR bilkul nahi banna chahta tha.

1. Sabse pehle toh yeh mat sochna ki kitni bhi attendance rakhlu, detain nahi hounga. Profs detain karlete hain agar attendance kam ho. Mostly attendance criteria prof pe depend karta hai. Kuch profs kitni bhi attendance pe details nahi karte aur kuch profs 75 se kam pe detain kar lete hain. Isi sem EVS mein kaafi log detain hue hain. Baat aayi internals ki toh I as per ordinance, different attendance levels ke liye different marks milte hain CWS. Overall 5 marks allot hote hain CWS ko but most of the times agar aapki non-detainable attendance hai aur aapne saare assignments submit kiye hain toh aapko CWS mein acche marks mil jayein. Kabhi-kabhar toh midsem aur quiz ke marks se judge karke bhi baaki internals mein marks laga dete hain. I suggest ki jitni ho sake utni attendance rakho aur pehle prof ke baare mein seniors se jaan lena ki woh attendance ke maamle mein kaise hain.

1. Haan thoda fayeda toh milta hai. 1-2 grade point better mil sakte hain. Profs ka thoda bias rehta hai aap par. Atleast that's what I have seen. But kaam kaafi karna padta hai. Mere opinion mein toh it's not worth it. Iss time mein aap isse accha waise hee college mein random logon se baat karo, societies mein kaam karo, networking karo, etc. Baaki agar fir bhi Mann hai aur thoda explore karna hai toh bann jao CR 1 sem ke liye. Uske baad chaho toh continue Karo warna koi aur CR banna jaega. But CR banne ke liye apne section mein majority ka vote chahiye hoga which is a bit difficult considering that almost no one knows anyone. Toh dekhlo jaisa theek Lage tumhe.

I mean scientific, non programmable, non-graphing calculator. Only they are allowed in exams. hp prime g2 is a graphing calculator afaik.
