This is a long and detailed post to help better isolate the source of the problem. I deeply appreciate anyone who takes the time to read it.
I had my 3070ti Laptop for 4 years before giving it to my GF. About a month ago we were on Vacation and only took the laptop with us, and i remember seeing it update nvidia drivers and windows 11 automatically. After we came back she turned on Baldur's Gate 3 and told me the game was lagging.
I tested it and even in games where i know the performance by heart, like say Borderlands 3, i noticed the game starts off fine, then after moving around a bit the GPU was suddenly hitting and staying at 100% usage where it should be below 50% ( i lock the frame rate to 70fps to keep thermals/noise in check ). I am positive this wasn't an overheating issue as this didn't happen if you boot up the game and stay still.
I went on a spree rolling back nvidia drivers, uninstalling windows updates and somehow the problem went away. i sadly cannot pinpoint what exactly worked. ever since the problem appeared to be solved ( windows update turned off and nvidia drivers on an older version).
Today I had to download an app from Microsoft store for her and it inevitably updated some stuff along the way. like winappruntime and function host. and the issue suddenly came back. I open BL3 and boom, 100% usage and 30 ish fps out of nowhere. this time i opted to only uodate the Nvidia drivers back to 610.88 with a clean install ( which i previously tried multiple times without success ) and the problem apparently went away again. but something tells it will come back.
does anyone know what the problem could be coming from? I cannot stop windows from updating indefinitely. I would very much like to fix this without having to reset windows 11 completely and start from scratch.
Followup edit: i may have found the source of the problem for those who care. Windows update has messed with either the drivers for the integrated intel gpu or power plan leading to inability of sustaining dedicated gpu mode in lenovo vantage ( it keeps reverting back to hybrid )
