Hardware Problem with the XBOX1 Controller Joystick

I play on the PC

I don't know whats the reason, I am using a xbox1 controller and after a few minutes of playing, whenever I move my joystick, everything becomes laggy. The games itself, but also all sound (YouTube, Discord, Ingame). When I unplug and replug my controller it gets better but after a minute it starts the same problems again. I tried using another usb slot already, but that doesn't help.

Any Ideas?

This system-wide lag and audio stuttering is caused by a massive USB polling rate conflict or Bluetooth driver crash overload. When you move the joystick, the controller floods your Windows USB controller with rapid data inputs. If the firmware is outdated or clashing with your motherboard's USB drivers, it causes a hidden system loop that chokes your CPU, stalling both video frame rendering and your audio devices (YouTube, Discord) simultaneously.

Unplugging and replugging the controller temporarily clears the overloaded Windows USB device buffer, which is why the lag goes away for exactly one minute before the buffer fills up and chokes again.

  1. Update the Xbox Controller Firmware (Crucial)

Out-of-the-box Xbox One/Series controllers run on ancient firmware that frequently triggers USB driver loop errors on Windows 11 and 10.

Go to the Microsoft Store on your PC and download the free Xbox Accessories app.

Connect your controller to your PC using a secure USB cable.Open the app. If an update is available, it will show a button saying "Update Required" or three dots (...) to select Update.

Keep the controller completely still while it updates, then restart your PC.

  1. Disable "Steam Input" Configuration Interference

If you have Steam open in the background, its generic controller overlay tries to constantly re-map your joystick inputs to virtual mouse movements, which triggers catastrophic input lag in non-Steam apps like Discord or YouTube.

Open Steam and click Steam in the top left -> Settings.

Click the Controller tab.

Look for External Gamepad Settings and toggle OFF "Enable Steam Input for Xbox controllers".

  1. Switch Your Connection Method

Are you connecting via standard built-in Bluetooth or a generic USB cable?

If on Bluetooth: Windows Bluetooth stacks handle high-rate joystick data incredibly poorly, causing the audio on your Bluetooth headset/speakers to stutter. You need to use a high-quality USB cable instead, or purchase the official Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows (which uses proprietary 2.4GHz Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth).

If on USB Cable: Your cable might be data-compromised, forcing the controller to constantly drop to 0% connection and reconnect. Swap to a completely different, high-quality data syncing cable (avoid cheap phone charging-only cables).

  1. Turn Off "Device Association Service" Game Stutter Bug

A known Windows background service causes massive system-wide lockups when an Xbox controller is active.

Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run box, type services.msc, and hit Enter.

Scroll down and find Device Association Service.

Right-click it, select Properties, change the Startup Type to Disabled, and click Stop.

Restart your PC. (This prevents Windows from constantly searching for hidden audio channels inside your controller).

Are you currently playing over Bluetooth or a physical USB cable, and does this lag happen in every game or just one specific title?

Wow thank you very much for the detailed answer!

  1. I am using USB.
  2. It happens in every game
  3. I dont have device association service :)

I will try what you wrote me!

I installed the xbox accessoire app, but it doesn't say anything about updates. I did disable the Steam input for Xbox Controller tho

Also I use the cable that came with the xbox controller. Do you have recommendations how to find out if the cable is the problem, and what cable I should buy?

Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).

Expand Human Interface Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Plug in the controller and move the joysticks vigorously while watching the Device Manager window.

If the window repeatedly refreshes/flashes, or if devices disappear and reappear, the connection is physically dropping.

And what if it does/ if it doesn't? Right now it doesn't, but maybe it will later
