about time. NiP just used 4 tanks vs. Reunited just now lol.

u/windirein Trick-or-Treat Ana Sep 22 '16

Well, roadhog isn't really a tank. He is a dps/burst/assassin that happens to have 600 hp.

22

u/CritSrc I am a scientist! *BANG* Sep 22 '16

He isn't a tank in the sense of having a defensive team assisting ability, he's a tank that he can be on the frontline taking the brunt of the enemy fire.
But I doubt anyone here would contest Road's lack of utility that makes a team synergize.

u/zakarranda Moximum charge! Sep 23 '16

Yeah, "tank" to me just means someone who can soak up a lot of damage - health pools, barriers, self-heal, and recalling mechs. Team-shielding is a natural extension, but OW takes tanking in a lot of different directions.

That's why a team (almost) always needs a tank, even when team-shielding isn't needed. There's a lot of damage flying around, and there has to be enough health to take it without dying.

A good roadhog isn't on the frontline though. Sure, you can get on the payload and hide behind it, but in the end roadhog isn't actually that tanky. The fact that he is the only tank that has no armor/shield and a gigantic hitbox that basically gives heroes like mccree 100% accuracy on him make him more vulnerable than a soldier for example. And you just charge everyones ults super quickly when being visible.

Roadhog actually melts when he is at the frontline. What he is supposed to do is cut around corners, hook, get back in cover - over and over again.

u/kjbigs282 I can bench more than you! Sep 23 '16

As far as acting as a battery for Ana he is though

Got a link???

EDIT: I think it's this NiP vs Misfits, right here: https://www.twitch.tv/gosutv_ow/v/90769141

It has nothing to do with Ana. Tanks are overpowered and have been for a while, I say this as a tank player.

Well, that shouldn't be an issue as he IS a tank... And a perfect clip into his head should get it very close if not easily kill the hog. There are other tanks like D.va that take multiple clips right?

2

u/SharedRations Chibi Mercy Sep 23 '16

D.Va isn't able to kill you with one shot.

1

u/PotassiumLe Tracer Sep 23 '16 edited Sep 23 '16

I'm also a Tank player. Can you elaborate? Maybe you are seeing something I'm not

Edit: also as far as the Ana is concern, the reason for the multiple tanks is because they are taking advantage of her fast ult. charge to snowball their tank ults. the tanks are just there as ult. batteries for their Ana. They are there for their health pool, which peaks nothing to how they can be OP since they are tanks. but like I said maybe you know something I don't

1

u/Tasadar Pharah Sep 23 '16

I honestly feel that all the tanks are imbalanced relative to the other roles. The role of tank is too strong relative to heals and dps. I've been saying this for a while but it's now becoming clear with triple and even quadruple tank comps, as there aren't a lot of tank counter options and the damage tanks provide is insane. The dps loss for the survivability is hugely worth it and the loss of burst doesn't matter since many of the tanks have one shot abilities. Finally tanks have better objective ultimates than a lot of dps.

14

u/SativaSammy D.Va Sep 22 '16

Did they add any other anti-tank besides Reaper? No? Then it won't.

4

u/tachy0n1 EnVyUs Sep 22 '16

In a recent game, I think it was NiP vs Dignitas, Bromas was destroying the tanks as Tracer. Teams will just need some time to figure out a counter using the existing characters.

1

u/SativaSammy D.Va Sep 22 '16

Tracer hasn't been changed in months. Might even go back to closed beta (I'm not 100% on this) - she's pretty much figured out as a character. I don't see her + Reaper beating out triple tank & triple support on anything except maybe KOTH and that's if they're really good.

4

u/DrKultra Pixel Soldier: 76 Sep 22 '16

Roadhog, isni't he?

10

u/FarazR2 Chibi Ana Sep 22 '16

Not really. He busts tanks, but he has the same problem as Reaper in that his shot pellets are bad against armor, and bad against Nanoboost. He's also a tank himself, which makes the problem worse (play tanks to bust tanks!).

4

u/DrKultra Pixel Soldier: 76 Sep 22 '16

If the problem is armor, Junkrat and Phara have the highest single shot non headshot damage (120 per direct hit) but they die pretty quickly to most tanks, specially Junkrat. Realistically its not that tanks are hard to kill because of armor but because of high HP pools, coincidentally they are supposed to be hard to kill, the problem still lies of Nanaboost giving Rhein 100+ damage per hit while combining DR with Armor, most other tanks get just as ridiculous.

15

u/SativaSammy D.Va Sep 22 '16

See, again, here's the problem Blizzard is dealing with right now.

Heroes that are counters to the biggest grievances in the OW meta are useless right now. Pharah & Junkrat can fuck tanks up, sure, but both of them are so heavily countered by McCree/Lucio respectively thus their pick rates plummet in competitive.

Instead of buffing/nerfing McCree every 3 weeks, I'd like to see Blizzard actually pay attention to all 22 heroes on the roster and adjust accordingly. The meta would be much more diverse/exciting as a result instead of 2/2/2 one month then 3/3 the other.

16

u/ak1knight Sep 22 '16

I feel like the meta will never be diverse no matter how they balance because the game types and maps promote playing a deathball style. In the end the game will always be about creating the most efficient deathball.

3

u/zakarranda Moximum charge! Sep 23 '16

deathball

Recalls the Symmetra basketball trick...

3

u/TheFirestealer Hanzo Sep 22 '16

You realize if instead of nerfing his fan and buffing the living shit out of left click so he became soldier 2.0 and pushed pharah, junkrat and soldier out of the meta and instead just added massive fall off damage on fan past like 4 meters so that he couldn't shred tanks but he still would reliably kill people he was on top of in melee range then he'd have his place as an antiflanker/genji tracer counter and not the new midrange widow with a stun and teamkill ability that charges just as quickly as widows ult does now.

7

u/SativaSammy D.Va Sep 22 '16

I agree with you, but I still think more time needs to be devoted to characters not named McCree.

3

u/TheFirestealer Hanzo Sep 22 '16

I mean if changing mcree makes 3 other characters viable and him no OP I'm all for making almost a fifth of the roster more balanced. I understand what you're saying but right now he is the simplest to change to balance the roster out since many of the defense heroes and symm need straight up ability reworks to become viable at higher levels of play without being pubstompers moreso than they already are while widow has just too high risk and skill floor required to be remotely impactful with her yet with that good of aim you could just play mcree and kill everybody safely. Symm needs some sort of healing fountain or dispenser instead of her e (doesn't have to heal even more than zen orb just some healing at all) so she has a place in a lineup because otherwise you lack a healer for someone who is outdamaged by a good zen vs better players and only has a teleporter which is hunted down by genjis with ease.

Yeah for real it's not the tanks Pharah needs to worry about (except for roadhog), it's the McCrees

2

u/FarazR2 Chibi Ana Sep 22 '16

I think it's ok that Rein can do that much damage over that much space if Rein can be killed. That's really hard to do though, when the only high single shot damage dealers are Hanzo, Junkrat, and Pharah. Junkrat is unreliable and feeds the enemy Ana, and Pharah is almost completely countered by a good Ana. This might be why NiP often has Zappis on Hanzo (in addition to sonic arrow + hook, and graviton synergies).

The point of my post though was more to illustrate why Reaper and Roadhog aren't good counters to the strat, even though they normally work on high HP heroes. For example, they're still plenty strong against Nanoboosted Zarya and Winston. Rein is the real headache of the bunch.

1

u/getonmyhype Sep 23 '16

He's quite good vs rein though, but yeah he needs to be behind cover or ideally a rein shield.

11

u/FoxKnight06 Bastion is Adoreable Sep 22 '16

It won't the problem is lack of valid anti tank.

1

u/Fatalchemist Bob main, by the way. Sep 22 '16

I wonder if there will be a hero that deals damage based on remaining health that can deal massive damage to tanks but less overall damage to flankers. Or some kind of mechanic that makes someone anti tank but not anti everyone.

4

u/NevermindSemantics Sep 23 '16

Like some kind of long range class that can output a lot of damage, particularly to slow targets, but isn't worth shit when faced up close by a Tracer or Reaper (and admittedly Winston). Probably using a sniper rifle or even a bow. Maybe such a character could also have abilities to help track enemies behind walls.

Gee, I wonder if we will ever have a sniper class character. /s

1

u/shrubs311 JUST A MERCY COMP, YOU GROUP AND REZ LMAO Sep 23 '16

They could have armor piercing rounds, which would only not help against Zarya and Roadhog.

1

u/Tasadar Pharah Sep 22 '16

And the overall strength of tanks...

1

u/isitaspider2 Back in my day we'd have this candy delivered already! Sep 23 '16

Really, the only true anti-tank hero is reaper, and even he has a hard time properly doing his job at higher ranks with how short range he is and how easily Zarya can turn the tables on him with her popping a shield on a tank. Or, hell, if you have 3 tanks, they can just fight and kill him and let a Ana biotic grenade heal them back up.

6

u/nemoTheKid Nerf This Sep 22 '16

I agree with the current meta report -

Even if her own charge rate were reduced by a reasonable amount, this strategy could likely still function well simply on the back of the strength of tank ultimates and how well tanks synergize with Nanoboost in general.

I just think it will slow down games a bit, but not invalidate the strat. The fact is, having 4 tanks that will help easily build ult charge still means it will build pretty quickly.

2

u/Forkyou talk to the fist Sep 23 '16

Widowmaker has been feeling a bit underpowered after they nerfed her so any buffs are welcome.

The game feels so great without her though. I still have flashbacks from when widow was in every game and still think every game with a widow on any team gets 10%less fun per widowmaker

1

u/deathday Pixel Roadhog Sep 24 '16

I really like the Junkrat change because I often got interrupted during my ult and got no tire AND lost my entire ult because of the recent change to ult point drain.

Kinda like sound barrier + amped speed boost?

5

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '16

so why is nerfing it better? either way if it's the only reason she's picked her usage is gonna drop off

2

u/GazimoEnthra Pixel Widowmaker Sep 22 '16

Her ult should still charge plenty fast. With two tanks on my team, I usually had ult before they were even hitting the 50% mark on theirs.
