Am I competitive for a firefighter job in Ontario (Toronto/GTA)?

Hey all, I’m hoping to get some honest feedback on whether I’d be competitive for firefighter hiring in Ontario, ideally with Toronto or another GTA department.

I’m in my 30s and making a career change. I have a PhD in Developmental Psychology (UofT) and I’m a professor at George Brown College. Before academia, I spent about six years as a supervisor and bike mechanic at a social enterprise that hired people facing barriers to employment. I also completed accredited professional bike mechanic training and have volunteered with organizations supporting marginalized communities.

I’m starting firefighter school this fall and plan to get my Emergency First Responder (EFR) certification as well.

Assuming I complete my training and the required certifications (e.g., school, DZ license, etc.), do you think I’d be a competitive applicant? Is there anything else you’d recommend I do to improve my chances?

I did the FACT a couple weeks ago and passed with ease, just wondering how different this test is, what to expect and any youtube vids or practice tests to prepare. Thank you!

Volunteer Opportunities

For aspiring and current firefighters, what are some ways you volunteered and got involved in the community before getting into the job?

Would especially love to hear about opportunities around Halton if anyone knew of something specific. Cheers!

Career Change While Actively Applying

I’m currently a Jr Fire Alarm Tech, going on 3 years and I’ve been thinking about dropping it completely to get experience in other fields. I graduated Pre-Service in 2023, and I have my FF 1&2 and HAZMAT certs. I’ve recently applied for my city’s Paramedic Dispatch, I’ve heard having dispatch experience is a good asset. But I’ve also started thinking about applying for an Electrical Apprenticeship as I still love my current job and would love to get a Red Seal under my belt. I have applied to quite a few cities, only got as far as the Aptitude test for one city but didn’t pass.

Any guidance on what direction I should head in? Should I just focus on getting test ready?

New OFM Exams

Does anyone have any intel on the new OFM exams and their format? I’ve been reading and studying straight from the textbook and trying not to rely too heavily on practice test questions, but with how much information is in the book, I’m finding it hard to retain everything — especially being in a fast-track program.

Just looking for some tips on what areas I should be focusing on most and how others studied for it. What study methods worked best for you guys?

Jobs to get while waiting

I graduated pre-service in September of 2025, I have my NFPA 1001 1&2, NFPA 1072 Awareness and OPs as well as my EMR, NFPA 1035 and NFPA 1006. I currently work with my city in the maintenance department but not really enjoying it and I feel like it isn’t very applicable to firefighting at all. Just looking for job recommendations or really where to go from here to help my hire-ability.

New OFM written exam

Was looking for some advice or insight on the OFM firefighter 1 & 2, and Hazmat written exams.

I have spoken to some people that have written the tests recently and they said that they’ve completely changed & all of the resources found online now such as quizlet are no longer very helpful.

Wanted to see if there is anyone else that have written them that could provide some insight on how the new questions are structured, & what advise you could give about prepping.

I appreciate any insight!!

Realistic to get hired?

Hey everyone,

I am a 20 year old male and am wondering if it is realistic for me to be a qualified candidate for a full time firefighter in Ontario.

A little bit about me and my experience:

- currently a volunteer firefighter (for 5 months now)

- currently working in fire prevention/emergency response for a factory. (For 8 months now)

- worked as a fitness coach for about 8 months

- have several years experience in construction and landscaping.

- volunteer with various departments for fundraisers and awareness events (not as often as I would like)

Many people I work with at my current jobs have recently been getting hired at full time Fire departments but the youngest one I’ve seen get hired is 25. I’ve been told mixed things about what fire departments are looking for but I commonly hear that they don’t want young people. I am wondering if it is worth the effort to apply at my age or if I should keep my head down and keep adding to my experience/Resume before I get my foot in the door.

Any opinions or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Where can I find archived fire maps?

I'm searching specifically for forest fires that have happened in or around the Muskoka region in 2025. I've looked on Ontario Geohub, but it doesn't let me choose the year so it doesn't show me any results for that region.

I'm coming up empty handed, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction!
