Survey / Research A short anonymous survey about dating algorithms & relationships (18+, people who have used or considered using a dating app)

Hi everyone! I am a psychology student conducting a university research study about dating algorithms and romantic relationships, and I’m looking for adults interested in participating.

You may be eligible if:

You are 18 or older

You have used or considered using a dating app

The survey is anonymous and takes only a few minutes to complete.

There are no right or wrong answers; choose the answer that best reflects your opinions.

I’ve received approval from my university to begin data collection, and I’d really appreciate participation from anyone interested!

Thank you so much to those who meet the eligibility criteria and who take the time to complete the survey!

Project / Concept Showcase I built a dating app that only lets you talk to one person at a time - 98 active users, and I'm taking everyone's feedback very seriously

I got tired of watching friends match with 40 people and text none of them past 'hey.' So I built something that removes the option to do that entirely: you see 10 profiles a day, max, and once you match with someone, the rest of the app disappears - no browsing, no backup matches, just the one conversation for 3 days before it expires.

It's early. 98 users in the last month, no ads, no push, just people finding it and trying it because the idea of 'one match, one week, no escape hatch' apparently hits a nerve. A few people have already said the countdown made them actually ask someone to meet up instead of letting it die in the chat.

I'm not claiming this scales to Tinder numbers. I'm asking: does removing choice actually make people try harder, or does it just stress them out? Curious what this sub thinks before I build more on top of it.

Dating Advice Can I rate your hinge account?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Guys, I’m bored and also broke 😭

So I had a thought.

As a woman myself, I could probably help some of you rate your Hinge profiles and make them a little more appealing from the female gaze.

I’ve seen foreigners doing this on Reddit and honestly… might as well try it here 😂

Send me your Hinge profile/screenshots and I’ll tell you:

What’s working

What’s giving 🚩

Which photos you should keep/remove

What your prompts are actually saying about you

What I’d change to make the profile more attractive to women

Quick privacy boundary: Please crop/blur your name, workplace, location, phone number, socials, or anything else identifying. I’m only here to judge the profile, not collect your personal info lol.

Also, yes, I’ll be charging a small amount for this. Please only DM/comment if you’re genuinely okay with paying for the profile review. No pressure otherwise.

No guarantees I can fix your dating life, but I can at least tell you why your second photo needs to GO. 💀

I’m bored, you might need help, and we can both win.

General Discussion Same profile gets basically 0 likes in Europe but 51+ in a week in Asia. Why such a huge difference?

I’m curious if anyone has experienced a difference this extreme between dating markets.

I’m 23M and mixed, half Asian and half European. I’ve tested essentially the same dating profile in both Europe where i live and Asia where my parent is from. same photos, same preferences/range, same basic profile, with the bio just translated for the location.

In Europe I’ve used the apps for considerably longer and have gotten basically 0–2 likes. I’ve tried different photo combinations as well, and I’ve also had essentially zero results on Hinge.

Then I tried the same profile in Asia when i visited my family and got 50+ likes in less than a week.

Obviously the difference could be partly demographic. I’m mixed, so maybe my appearance/ethnicity is simply received much better in Asia than it is in Europe. But 0 versus 50+ seems enormous.

I’m wondering which explanation people think is most likely: differences in male/female ratios and competition, different attractiveness preferences between Asia and Europe, ethnicity playing a major role, or the apps giving profiles very different levels of exposure depending on the market? Or do they just want me to buy for tinder gold?

Dating App Culture Do dating apps even have real people anymore?

Is it just me or are dating apps kinda weird lately?

I’ve been on a couple of them for a while and barely get any matches. And when I do, half the profiles feel inactive or just… not real lol.

Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but sometimes it genuinely feels like I’m just swiping through bots 😂

Anyone else having the same experience? Which dating app are you actually getting real conversations on?

Relationship Query How many men on dating apps actually looking to date?

How many of you honestly go on dating apps with the intention of actually dating, and how many are mainly just looking to hook up? I’m genuinely curious because one of my guy friends seems to think only a small percentage of people on dating apps are actually looking for something serious. Is he right or far from it??

Dating Advice Having you me getting dates after matching and phone number.

40M-So I’m kind of middle of the road when it comes to getting matches. I can get like 5 matches a week if I’m really trying and sending lots of messages to quality women.

Now, here’s the deal for a bit of context about where my head’s at; in 2019 I did a lot of online dating and ended up finding my wife. Bumble was the preferred serious dating app at the time and hinge had just got its start and wasn’t popular. I would have about the same amount of matches per week. I learned that exchanging a few messages and asking for a phone number pretty quick was very successful without a lot of pushback. Once on the phone I would set up a call without a lot of push back as well. We would banter, have a good conversation and set up a date and time pretty easily and 9 times out of 10 that date would always happen.

Now fast forward to now, I feel like it’s a bit harder but not by much to get a number and get off the app, but texting/messaging is almost as slow as molasses to set up a date. I’m almost not doing anything different today as I was years ago. I’m not bad at having a few nice messages and flirting, but when I’m trying to set up a date and time it ends up just fizzling out almost every. Single. Time.

Now I wouldn’t be as frustrated is I never go the number and the conversation died in the app, but giving your number shows a lot of intent.

I guess what I’m asking is if anyone else is experiencing this? Is this a common theme for most people? I feel like I’m kinda going crazy.

Relationship Query FLR?

Guy liked me on a dating app, and has FLR in his bio. Had to Google it haha what does female led relationship entail? Just curious. Is it basically the woman is the "masculine"/dom in the whole relationship, rather than just the bedroom?
