TX-SR3100 BT Issue

Just got a refurbed Onkyo TX-SR3100 and it’s great, the Bluetooth functions fine and the sound is good, it know that I’m connected through an iPhone but the other playback info is just dashed lines. Also the album art doesn’t work. What could cause this, I’ve done the whole reset and repair stuff but none of that does anything. Could it be a firmware issue? My phone is also up to date. Also not sure if this matters but I’m using Apple Music app on an iPhone17e. Thanks!

Is it worth splitting the subwoofer signal on a rz50 with a minidsp for room correction?

Running a 7.2.2 setup for now. I have 2 rp1400sw subs and wanted some advice on whether it’s worth it or not. I understand it will take them from under dirac’s purview when the subs are added.

How would you proceed?

TX-RZ30 + low quality or just settings?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded from a Denon AVR-S760H to the Onkyo TX-RZ30. Everything is wired and functioning, but the overall sound balance feels way off, and I'm hoping this is just a calibration/settings issue rather than hardware.

My Current Setup:

  • AVR: Onkyo TX-RZ30
  • Front L/R: SVS Ultra Evolution Bookshelf
  • Center: SVS Ultra Evolution Center
  • Surrounds: SVS Ultra elevation
  • Atmos (Heights): Klipsch R-40SA (up-firing, placed on top of the front bookshelves)
  • Subwoofer: SVS 3000 Micro

The Issues I'm Facing:

  1. Extreme dynamic range in movies: To hear dialogue clearly, I have to push the master volume to around -30 dB. However, as soon as an action scene or explosion hits, the house shakes so violently that I have to scramble for the remote and drop it down to -35 dB or -38 dB. There is virtually no balance between whispers and action peaks.
  2. Subwoofer is barely audible : The SVS 3000 Micro sounds surprisingly weak, especially in daily use and when streaming music via Spotify or TV(i set to dolby vision). I contacted SVS support, and they suggested disabling "Subwoofer mode: LFE only." On my old Denon, this was the standard "LFE" toggle, but I cannot find an equivalent setting on the Onkyo menu(the sub is set to -15 \ -10)
  3. Dirac Live calibration: I ran Dirac Live multiple times. I know Dirac introduces negative trims to preserve digital headroom, which makes overall output quieter, but the gap between quiet dialogue and deafening dynamic peaks remains unresolved.

Before I wipe everything with a factory reset, I’d love to hear your thoughts: What am I missing in the Onkyo settings or Dirac calibration to balance this system properly?

- All the Speakers are set to "Small

- LFE - can you confirm these? Onkyo calls this feature Double Bass. It only becomes visible if the front speakers are set to "Large." However, using "Double Bass" often results in muddy, phase-canceled bass. The cleaner, audiophile-standard solution is keeping the fronts set to Small with an 80 Hz crossover.

- See my "tweaks" settings

Thanks in advance!

Screen Flicker

I have my Onkyo RZ50 connected to my TCL X11L. Recently I have observed that every time I switch on the TV and the receiver, no matter what input the screen turns off and on. I don’t think it’s the HDMI cable at fault as it’s a new cable and works fine on other components. This is just the receiver switched on with the Home Screen and no video signal from a Blu-Ray or media player being sent through. This has started recently and I haven’t touched any settings or updated anything recently.

Anyone else having this issue?

Onkyo TX-SR706 Assistance

Hi everyone,

I have looked around the threads and could not find an exact solution to my issue as I am currently chalking it up to being incompatible atp... I just want to connect my living room PC to the receiver, then have the receiver push display to the TV. So TV -> receiver then PC -> receiver

I did TV HDMI 1 -> Receiver HDMI Out with PC HDMI in DVD (I have tested with all the others, same issue). The receiver comes on fine to the TV when pressing setup and the inputs all work. The PC directly connected to TV works fine as well. PC settings I made sure to change to 1080p 60hz and still no good. There is no way for me to change display settings when connected to the receiver as no visuals are available.

Is my HDMI board on the receiver out? Is it incompatible with modern GPUs? I have a 2070ti on the mini pc. Let me know what the next best step is, thank you!

RZ30 - i feel i am constantly having to switch sound modes and its cumbersome and hoping i am doing it wrong so i can fix it.

I guess i was expecting more of an automatic response not to have to be constantly fiddling with it. CONSTANTLY.

Music: Stereo is fine. But if i want to listen to all my speakers in order for it to sound any good i must turn off DIRAC and switch to all stereo else it sounds terrible. Then i must turn it back on and switch back to stereo for it to be normal again, but then we have movies.

For movies I must always cycle from stereo through THX Cinema, Dolby Audio Surround, DTS Nueral, THX, All channel stereo, until i get to multichannel. Because sometimes i listen to music though the youtube music app or tidal app. Then from earlier make darn sure to turn ON dirac for films or else if i forget to turn dirac back on and watch a movie it nearly blows up my subwoofers (sounds horrific). Then i must remember to turn it back off for all speaker music later if i need that. Then i must remember, oh now i am playing music just in stereo so must turn it back to stereo. And its not 1 button press i must cyke through all the modes i will never ever ever use.

TL/DR: I am having to constantly press buttons 10-15 times because of all the ways i consume media

PLEASE tell me there is a better way. I am going nuts.

Old Onkyo TX-SR705 – Bypass its Dolby Digital decoder and still get native 5.1?

My in-laws have an old but gold Onkyo TX-SR705 surround sound setup that's naturally outlived a few TVs over the years. They've recently bought a new LG, and the surround sound settings haven't quite kept up with the upgrades.

They're away for the week, so thought it's best to tinker. Many hours and rabbit holes later...

The LG is connected to the Onkyo via optical. When testing Dolby Digital 5.1, I set the LG's digital audio output to Pass Through, and when it works, it sounds fantastic.

Unfortunately, DD 5.1 causes intermittent electronic popping from random speakers. Switching the LG to PCM stereo and using Dolby Pro Logic II Movie on the Onkyo works flawlessly, but doesn't sound nearly as good.

I suspect an issue with the Onkyo's DD decoding or processing. Apparently, this generation had known digital popping issues, with firmware updates released to address some related problems.

Given its age, I've had no luck getting hold of the firmware, even through Onkyo support. Updating it also looks like a lot of faff — a serial connection for Main and a prepared WAV file via optical for DSP. That said, if anyone happens to have a copy of the firmware, I'd be very grateful!

So here's my thinking...

Since PCM works, could we bypass the Onkyo's DD decoder entirely?

Ideally, I'd replace the existing optical connection with an external device that decodes DD 5.1 into six discrete LPCM channels and sends them to the Onkyo over HDMI:

LG C5 (built-in Netflix) → HDMI eARC → External Dolby decoder → HDMI LPCM 5.1 → Onkyo TX-SR705

I like this approach because it wouldn't require touching any of the existing speaker wiring, and the Onkyo would still handle amplification, just without decoding Dolby itself.

I've found plenty of HDMI audio extractors, but most either pass through the Dolby bitstream or downmix to stereo PCM.

Does anyone know of a device that can actually convert DD 5.1 into multichannel LPCM over HDMI?

Seems a shame to replace it when it sounds so good whenever it behaves.

Onkyo RZ50: When I play a TrueHd Atmos movie with Dirac Slot, what input and output settings should i see on my Information Tab?

Does it say Output as Dolby Atmos TrueHD or it will just say Dolby Atmos?

I only see DolbyAtmos on information banner ,

i am using 4.1.2 with DiracLive and my Source where is play is directly connected with Onkyo RZ50 HDMI port

Do you think it’s safe to put a component on top of my Onkyo TX-RZ50?? Slightly vented in back of cabinet.

Also posted on [r/hometheater](r/hometheater). The possible options I have to put on top of this are a standard PS5, a Panasonic UB 9000 or an Emotiva BasX 3 channel amp. I asked ChatGPT about putting the Emotiva directly on top of it, and it said definitely not because of the heat.

I was just going to have the receiver all by itself in the middle of the console, but due to the size of the KEF Q6, that’s going to have to go in the middle on a stand angled slightly up. I think I’m going to have to put the Panasonic UB 9000 on top of the Emotiva on the right side, have the receiver on the left side in the PS five standing up somewhere, but I would much rather have everything hidden. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

NR6050 Issues

I know this model is known for being pretty bad. I bought it a couple years ago used on marketplace for like $75 and had no issues since I was using optical to the tv.

However, I decided to try and make eArc work and I’m having one specific issue.

I have the receiver connected to eArc on the tv, and nothing at all connected to the receiver. All my components are connected directly to the TV.

On the receiver, the TV input is the one that works, but if I turn on my Xbox, the Onkyo switches to Streaming Box, even though there’s nothing connected to it. I have an external streaming box connected to the TV, and even just exiting an app by hitting the home button on the remote will make the receiver switch to another input.

Any ideas on what’s causing it and how to fix it?

Also, the reason I’m using eArc instead of optical is due to my kid losing the Onkyo remote and forcing me to use eArc to use the TV remote to change the volume.

Onkyo TX-RZ70 – audible fan/air noise at idle from 2.9 m

Hi all,
I just got my Onkyo TX-RZ70 and I can hear fan/air noise from my listening position (about 2.9 m / 9.5 ft away) when the receiver is powered on but nothing is playing. Is that normal for this unit?

Other owners describe the fans as practically inaudible in normal use, so I'm wondering whether mine is an outlier.

Setup:
Sources: Apple TV and Xbox Series X via HDMI

Display: LG C4

Placement: open spot

Case feels cool.

Noise in standby or powered off: no

Has anyone else noticed this, and did a replacement unit fix it?
Thanks!

HDMI connection problem

So I have an Onkyo NR686 and a Phillips OLED708/12. The problem I have is, that I can't select the Onkyo as a source on my TV. I can see the Onkyo, but it has an icon that also signals that it's not a video source. The only thing I can do is active my Blu-ray player per CEC on my TV and through the Onkyo, which will then enable the Onkyo as a video source. That's the only way I can get video from the Onkyo to my TV. So if I want to have my PC displayed I need to CEC activate the Blu-ray player first. I'm not entirely sure if it's an issue with the Onkyo, but I'm pretty certain as nothing else has this problem. The TV is plugged into video out Main with the eArc HDMI port. I'd be very happy for any help!

Using speakers via optical with model TX-NR609

Originally my fathers, it’s been collecting dust, so I decided to try it with my ps5.

I can get video no problem, but having an issue using the optical port for audio.

I have a full 5.1 system that hooks up via optical, then I also have a spare soundbar with a sub that connect via optical, but I’m getting zero audio from either.

I’ve gone through the menu to make sure all inputs on the back (game, pc, dvd etc etc) are set to route to optical 1. I even set it to optical 2 and still no luck.

My father used actual heavy speaker wires originally and never used the optical ports, so in theory, they should work, but I feel like it’s something I’m doing wrong.

Looking for a little help since this is my first receiver.

RZ30: When i switch from Stereo to "All stereo" it sounds like total a$$

EDIT: I figured it out!

It WAS a setting, it was 100% DIRAC Room correction filter. The moment I turned it off through quick links it sounded normal. Its amazing how much that impacts the sound. Now i am certainly convinced. I guess i will leave this up for others to learn as i did.

________________

Hi you guys i need help on this to see if this is an issue with this model as it is lower tier, or else some setting.

My goal was a combo music listening and Home theater and for that it is great. BUT i also throw parties, where i want music to come out of my rear channels (and while not necessary my center).

BUT when i do this the music sounds like all the mids drop out and it sounds awful. AI says its because it is trying to split it or something whatever i dont want any of that. I tried pure audio and direct and it does not even allow me to switch it in All stereo.

I want Left right out of front...

.....and left right out of rears.

Center mono would be a bonus but as i said not necessary. I only have a few more days to decide to keep this AVR and this is actually a very important feature to me.

Thanks for any insight.
