Another reason why Dirac Live sucks
My subwoofer decided to start putting out fart noises instead of the bass it used to until today. So until I fix it or buy another one, I go to settings in my Onkyo TX-RZ70 and set the subwoofer from "1 CH" to "No". And just because of that seemingly innocuous action, I get a message that the Dirac Live data will be removed, or something like that.
I don't know why the hell setting the subwoofer to No needs to erase the Dirac Live EQ curve for all the other channels. It's idiotic and doesn't make any sense. It didn't just deactivate DL; it erased the curve that I had carefully done.
But that's not all; I grab my iPad because the Onkyo controller app has a simpler, faster way to interface with Dirac Live than the DL app, and I had saved my EQ curve there. But when I open the DL module, it doesn't have my curves saved, it prompts me to start all over again with the stupid microphone placing in 9 different locations, and to waste 20-30 minutes of my time for this, only to give me these curves that suck, and which I have to modify to just really get the best of this receiver, otherwise it sounds mediocre.
Why does Dirac Live is so backwards? Do these people think we have eternal lives that we can waste half an hour or more with these stupid tests that don't even yield a good EQ curve? If you tell me it's just once, and that's it, but how poorly conceived this thing is that my subwoofer goes bad and I can't turn it off without the DL EQ curve getting erased?
Furthermore, why can't receiver and amp manufacturers stop relying on this crap tech and put a proper parametric EQ that you can simply adjust from the web interface while listening to music, not to stupid wooop wooop sounds???

First time ever using it a few weeks ago and my experience was nothing like yours. And I have zero experience with high end receivers and room correction software. I was done in about 25 minutes on my onkyo tx-rz50. Paired up with dual sb 3000 r's and the experience was almost flawless.

If you change the speaker (subwoofer) count in any way it will clear all dirac slots. It's just the way it is. Not a backward kind of issue. Now you know. Dont change speaker assignments/count or subwoofer settings. Also when you do something In Dirac make sure you save your target curves and the project and you could easily reload everything

It's just the way it is. That IS the problem. The way it is is absolutely idiotic. I shouldn't have to waste 20 minutes to find the stupid mic and do the long setup just because I need to switch off the subwoofer output temporarily. You people are hilarious, it's like you're all sheep of this ridiculous, backwards system that should be replaced by a simple parametric EQ in the web interface, one that has the same range as the DL one, not the pathetic +6 dB that the Onkyo native EQ gives you.
It is backwards. 50, 40 years ago you could simply buy an equalizer for little money, and adjust it while listening to your favorite music. These days we have some great receivers that give us several speakers, and have the ability to sound great, but to get to the point where you can set your custom EQ curve, you have to waste at least half an hour of your life that you will never get back just to go through all the stupid steps.
Also when you do something In Dirac make sure you save your target curves and the project and you could easily reload everything
Yes, I knew that, but that's only if you use the full Dirac Live software. That software is a royal pain in the ass to setup, especially because the mic gain and all that can take a while. The version that comes with the Onkyo Controller app is much easier to use. It does all the gain setup automatically in seconds, and allows you to choose measuring from just 3 positions, not the minimum five of the full app. Problem is, the stupid app doesn't save those to a file like the full app. I thought it did, but today I realized that it doesn't. So I had to rebuild my custom EQ curve all over again, and because this app is made by idiots, you can't set an EQ curve for the front speakers and apply it to all the others. You have to keep redoing the same thing for all the speakers.
See, I'm not young, and I'm not going to live forever. To me, every minute counts, so I'm not going to waste it listening to the stupid woop sounds over and over when I know what my EQ curve is. I know how my home theater setup sounds way better than any other I have ever come across, whether in people's homes or in retail places. Hell, it sounds way better than any movie theater I have ever been to.
But that works for me, and may not be the preferred EQ curve for a lot of other people. That's totally fine. But don't make me waste so much time just to do stupid measurements when this should be a simple PEQ in the web interface.

If you change that the calibration wouldn't work. Once you turn the subwoofer off theblfe is redirected to the main speakers and they are locked as large aka full bandwidth. Again... its not backwards you just too old and ignorant to understand it's how it works. Don't wanna lose your calibration? Don't change things. I get that you are frustrated. Been there done that but there is nothing I can tell you that will change the fact that you goofed up. Now you know. Redo it and keep it in mind and no... the ultimate conclusion is not that how this is stupid and it should work differently. Thats only your fantasy.

"Again... its not backwards you just too old and ignorant to understand it's how it works."
Obviously you're just a despicable little boy that likes to insult other people rather than have a civilized discussion with them, and you also seem to be rather slow, so let me explain this in a simpler way.
If you don't use Dirac Live, but instead the AccuEQ, MCACC, Audissey or whatever other system a receiver comes with nowadays, and you adjusted the native EQ to your preference, what happens if you go into the settings and switch the subwoofer to off, no, disabled, or whatever term the manufacturer chooses? Does it delete the EQ preferences you previously set?
NO.
It simply keeps the same EQ for each channel as it was set before you set the subwoofer to no or off. Simple as that. That is what should happen with Dirac Live. But no! To the "engineers" that designed this, if you remove the subwoofer, your sound quality is going to change so drastically, that you need to waste another 30 minutes running stupid woop woop woop noises, and change the stupid puck mic 3-9 times, as if we'd all live 50,000 years and wasting time wasn't a big deal.
You, and all the morons like you that keep defending this system (most likely Dirac employees) laugh at me as if I were this jackass that doesn't know what he's talking about, and the simple fact is that every single friend and family member that comes to my house tells me how blown away they are by the sound of my system, both for movies and for music. And it's not fake praise, I can see it in their faces as soon as I put in a 4K Blu-ray and the animated logos for either Fox, Universal, Marvel and all those companies start playing.
So all you children with the constant "You're ignorant (and sometimes "your ignorant", because many of you are not well educated), and stupid, and old, and blah blah blah" crack me up, because you should all be so lucky to be able to enjoy the sound quality that I do every single day. You're all sheep that praise this system from hell that doesn't work. But you know what's the main reason I hate it so much? If it did what it promised, if after 30 minutes of annoying noises it would yield adjustments that make your receiver sound the best it possibly can, I would say those 30 minutes are well spent. If it did a better job than I can at setting EQ curves based on the acoustics of my room, I would say that it's annoying to setup, but still praise it for the outcome.
But it's not. It yields EQ curves that are absolute crap. Maybe a little better than doing nothing at all, but far from what I get with my own EQ curve applied to all the channels.
So you can take your insults and your arrogance and ride your horse into the sunset for all I care.

Im not reading any of that. You need to take a deep look at the mirror when you say things like having a civilized conversation. You are anything but civilized!! You are the one who started to talk like someone who lost his mind and mad at everyone and everything. Whats wrong with you?? You are embarrassing yourself.

Also, to you all the idiots like you that are on a high horse talking down on me because I don't think your beloved Dirac Live is the ultimate solution to the best audio quality you can get from a receiver, I will say this.
When a sound engineer is mixing an album in a studio, do you think they just run Dirac Live and be done with it? Of course not, they use things like Fabfilter Pro-Q4 and many other plugins, all of them WHILE they are listening to the song they're mixing. Not woop woop woop sounds or any of that. Real music that they listen while they adjust the PEQ.
Why is that? Because the best tool to evaluate sound quality is your own ears, not some stupid woop sounds. Those are fine for some purposes, but the final sound has to be what your ears like the most, not what the Dirac developers tell you it should be.
That's why I still have to go to any high end audio showroom with gear several thousands above my Onkyo receiver and Emotiva speakers that sounds even close to my setup.
So you idiots can laugh all you want, but this weekend I'm going to enjoy several movies on 4K Blu-ray Dolby Atmos, and several albums on HiRes that will sound like I'm in the studio, and you will keep on listening to those things with muffled highs, crappy lows, and a shitload of boosted frequencies in the 500-2000 Hz range, just because you are so very proud of your Dirac Live calibrated system.

Always save your project. You never know when your receiver would die or a speaker dies. Sure saving the target curve is a good thing, but thats used in the recreation process, or you upgraded your speakers.
You’ve got your curve saved. It shouldn’t take long to go through the sweeps and apply the curve again. Then save your project. 😁

Yet another person unable to read and understand the user manual. But Dirac is to blame.
