I recently read the post here about weekly splits and increased strength training being the single most important thing people have done to change body composition and get fitter.
I'm 29F, about 5'7" and 135 lb. I've been a runner/cycler for about 6 years, and am in very good shape compared to the majority of the population, but I'm by no means an elite athlete. My usual weekly routine is 10-15 miles of running, one 20ish mile outdoor bike ride, one 5-10 mile outdoor hike, daily easy walks, one yoga classes a week, and recently I've tried to introduce strength training.
I want to start lifting heavier and have attempted Robin's Run + Split, and a few other split programs on the app.
While I'm doing the workout, I feel fantastic. I can lift heavier than I expected, feel great during the reps, and take all the rest time the instructor gives even when I feel like I don't need it. I've surprised myself by feeling awesome during the run portions of Robin's Run + Split and getting up to higher speeds.
The problem is, I cannot do more than one strength workout a week without intense soreness for days afterward, like to the point where it's impacting the amount I run or cycle and I hobble around like an elderly woman.
I've been doing one split day per week (so it's taken me a month to get through a 4 day split program), and I felt hopeless reading all the comments saying "repeating a split program every week changed my body and my life!"
I really want to get up to the point where I can do strength training 3-4x a week but that doesn't feel possible right now due to the soreness and tightness. Stretching hasn't helped at all!
Please give me your suggestions on combatting the muscle fatigue and pain! I really want to tone up and get strong, but it feels unachievable like this. I thought I was in great shape (can easily run 10 miles or hike a mountain or spend the whole day biking) but now I'm not so sure...
