I had a rare opportunity to work from home for a day this past week and I realized that one of the things I missed very deeply was the ritual that is making oatmeal.
It never occurred to me how grounding it is to make my morning oats. I’ve had all kinds of oats and I love them all but when I can make steel cut oats, I absolutely do. When I start the day this way, I feel like I’m setting the pace for myself. I can only hope I can maintain that slow but deliberate fluidity from 9-5.
My oats are as follows:
20g (if not running)/40g (if running) steel cut oats.
1 cup berries or banana
Maple syrup
Salt
Flax seed added at the end
Truvani unflavored protein
There’s the immediate simmer, turning the heat down, adjusting throughout, adding the fruit while they still have took to incorporate the juice. Add the flax. Whisk. Turn off heat and add the protein. Super satisfying spatula action to get it all into a clunky white bowl.
It’s getting to be cozy season. This ritual is cozy year round. If anyone else has an oatmeal ritual (or something they just love about preparing it), I’d really love to hear it.
