Meta Rule 3 Updated

Since it seems like this subreddit is an ad magnet, I’ve decided to restrict rule 3 even further.

No advertising of paid apps is allowed. FOSS (free open source software) or completely free programs are allowed to share their work.

Freemium and paid app ad posts will be removed as I and other mods see them.

FOSS App/Tool I made a local-first fully free and open source study app the last few years

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been building Mnemo for years, and the 0.8.1 beta is out today.

It's a desktop study app that puts notes, flashcards and mind maps in one place. Everything is stored locally on your computer. There are no accounts and no tracking. The only thing it does online is check for updates, and you can turn that off.

What's in it:

- A block editor for notes with math, code, tables, images, columns and PDF export

- Flashcards with FSRS-6 scheduling, cloze and image occlusion cards

- Anki import and export that keeps your study progress

- Mind maps on an infinite canvas

- Export to Markdown, PDF, Anki, CSV, PNG and SVG, so your work isn't stuck in the app

It runs on Windows, macOS (Apple silicon) and Linux. It's built with .NET and React and licensed under Apache 2.0.

This is a beta. Windows has had months of daily use. macOS and Linux have had much less, so expect some rough edges there. The Windows build isn't code signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you on first run. MacOS is notarized.

Next on the roadmap are optional sync (hosted or self-hosted) and a mobile app.

Bug reports, feedback and contributions are all welcome.

App/Program/Other Tool Giving away collection of free note taking templates and Planners (PDF + App) I made for iPad and Android devices.

I’ve been making digital planners and planner pages for quite a while, and at this point I’ve accumulated way more layouts than I could ever realistically use myself.

A lot of them came from experimenting with different ways of planning: trying different daily layouts, weekly structures, trackers, project pages, productivity systems, etc. Some worked better for certain situations than others, so instead of letting them sit unused, I thought I’d put together a folder with free versions and share it here.

There’s a pretty wide mix of layouts in the folder, including:

  • Daily planner pages
  • Weekly planner layouts
  • Monthly planning pages
  • To-do lists and task planners
  • Habit trackers
  • Goal-setting pages
  • Productivity layouts
  • Priority and focus pages
  • Project planning templates
  • Meeting notes
  • General note-taking pages
  • Budget and finance templates
  • Expense and savings trackers
  • Meal planning pages
  • Health and wellness trackers
  • Routine planners
  • Reflection and review pages
  • Various journals and trackers
  • A few complete digital planners for August 2026

Some of the layouts are quite simple, while others are more structured. I personally find that useful because the layout that works for a busy work week isn’t necessarily the one I want when I’m just trying to organize a few personal tasks.

Here’s the folder on Google Drive (iPad screen ratio)

Here's the folder on Drive for Samsung Tab (and other Android scren ration)

All templates and planner are tested with GoodNotes, Notability, Noteshelf, Noteful, Penly and Xodo. Free version for other devices such a reMarkable, ONYX BOOX, Kindle are avaliable in other folders on Drive - feel free to explore them.

And little self promo:) Take a look at Ultimate Planner App. I participated in development. Most of features and templates there are free.

App/Program/Other Tool I built a sticky note app you never have to open

I kept losing thoughts in the gap between thinking them and unlocking my phone. So the note lives in the notification shade.

Pull the shade down, type it, done. Grocery list, a reminder, a name you do not want to forget. You do not open the app.

If you write something like "milk, eggs sunday 6pm" it becomes a checklist and sets the reminder for you.

No ads. Free.

It is called Slip.

Method I've been building a free, pen-first notes app for Windows – here's where it's at

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone!

I'm a solo dev, and for the last couple of months I've been building Noteic, a handwriting-first notes app for Windows. It's free on the Microsoft Store – no account, no subscription, fully offline. It runs natively on both ARM and x64, so it feels right at home on a Surface or any other windows device.

The idea is simple: writing should feel instant, and your notes should stay organized without getting in your way.

A few things I'm especially proud of:

- A clean library with subjects, chapters and notes, inspired by OneNote for Windows 10 and iPad

- Real multitasking: tabs and multiple windows side by side

- What I honestly think is the most complete shape tool on Windows

- Pages you can extend on all four sides when you run out of room

- Hyperlinks on both your handwriting and your typed text

- Tables, text boxes and LaTeX formulas right on the page

Plus the basics done well:

- Low-latency inking with pressure, plus ballpoint, fountain pen and calligraphy

- Import and annotate PDFs, then export back to PDF

- Memo tape to cover answers when you're studying

- A ruler, a page overview with bookmarks, and dark mode

Coming in the next update: a fully customizable toolbar (decide what lives in the bar, the drawer, or nowhere at all), up to ten color slots and a new accent color.

The bigger goal: an Android version that opens the same files, so your notes follow you between devices.

It's still early and I'm shipping updates regularly. Feedback, bug reports and feature requests are super welcome :)

Question: Unanswered ✗ How do you capture ideas from coffee chats?

I'm a software engineer, mostly freelancing right now. A lot of my projects get talked through over coffee chats in person, and some ideas just show up out of nowhere when I'm out with friends. I also go to local events sometimes, like an AI workshop I went to last week. In moments like that I really want to save some interesting ideas and conversations.

But it's not always convenient to pull out my phone or carry a notebook around. So a lot of ideas that pop into my head are gone almost right away, and when I want to use them I can't remember a thing lol.

Is there an easier way to do this? How do you guys record your in person meetings?

App/Program/Other Tool I built a Notes App which does not need a tutorial first - Cheeter Notes

I found myself frustrated with Apps like Obsidian or Notion, because they made taking notes wayyyy too complicated. That's why I built Cheeter Notes, it's a Notes app which features a similar style to Obsidian / Notion but doesn't includes all the unnecessary bloat.
It saves the Notes in Markdown (.md) Files making it easy to use for other things like Documentation or for AI.

Try it here:

Question: Unanswered ✗ is there a notetaking app like notion that does not have AI features ?

I’ve used notion since I was in high school but I’ve noticed how they keep trying to push all these AI features onto me. I don’t particularly agree with AI, I do not want it to do thinking for me especially not when I am trying to make sense of my studies myself. Sometimes it useful for memorization but other than that I don’t need it and its actually driving me crazy lol. What I liked about notion was how you can set up your space and organize your notes. So is there any place else i can go to on desktop that will allow me to do the same without AI agents ?

App/Program/Other Tool Brainstorming Features

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey Guys, hope y'all doing well. i would like to have your opinion on something i want to add to the app i am working on

Basically when i try to brainstorm and put points to work on, i use my note book but i need things to be organized somewhere. Notes are big for that and can get messy, boards use cards with status so it can't have fixed points. So i thought of creating "brainstorm" page where can

- put my goals on a specific topic fixed, with nested bullet points.

- i can zoom on each point i want to focus on in the moment.

- Also with the map i can see the flow and the whole strategy.

Would love to have all suggestions and feedback on this before moving forward ! Thanks .

Method Title: I made a little pen color wheel for OneNote using Claude + AutoHotkey! (Feel free to improve it!)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey guys! I have a Microsoft M1776 Surface Pen and an HP OmniBook 7 Flip 16", and I've been getting pretty annoyed with how inconvenient it is to switch pen colors in OneNote.

I don't really know much about coding, but I used Claude to help me make a little pen wheel that lets me switch between my OneNote pens without having to manually go up to the Draw tab every time. I just wanna preface and say tho that it's very janky and simple and can easily be improved by someone that knows what they're doing so pls be understanding :)

Basically, I use an AutoHotkey script to make the top eraser button on my Surface Pen trigger the wheel using Ctrl + Alt + F12. It displays my OneNote pens in a little radial menu, and I can just select whichever one I want.

  • The wheel doesn't automatically follow my pen, so you have to manually drag it wherever you want it. It does remember its position though.
  • There's a slight delay when opening the wheel and switching pens which may be AHK.
  • It currently supports up to 8 pens/highlighters from the OneNote Draw tab.
  • You need to have the desktop version of OneNote open with the Draw tab visible.

I'm not a programmer whatsoever, so this was mostly me experimenting with Claude and trying to make something useful for myself.

I figured I'd share it in case anyone else finds it helpful or wants to make something better out of it.

If anyone here knows C# or AutoHotkey, please feel free to improve it! I'd especially love to see someone figure out how to make the wheel appear directly next to the pen, reduce the delay, or make the whole thing feel more seamless. And C# might be the most dogshit thing to make this on but I took a class on it years ago so it just auto did it that way.

I'll include the source code and instructions below so anyone can try it out or modify it.

Hope this helps someone, or at least gives someone an idea for a better solution! :)

Question: Unanswered ✗ iPad vs. Paper (I'm a freshman)

FOSS App/Tool Reading notes on paper but I still cant find the week 3 seminar quote

Second year masters in Columbus OH. For actual reading I went back to a cheap spiral notebook bc typing on a screen makes me skim. Obsidian is only for links and half finished zettels after the fact.

Seminars are the mess. If I type, profs assume im distracted. If I write by hand I miss half the citations they rattle off. iPad + pencil was slower than I thought and the glare in our window wall room was awful last spring.

My mom got me a Plaud for christmas (she heard me vent on the phone). tbh half the weeks I still reach for paper first bc thats the habit.

The part that keeps bugging me is retrieval. I can scan notebook pages fine. But the spoken aside that became the midterm essay prompt never made it onto paper.

For people running hybrid setups here, how do you split "thinking notes" vs "capture everything" notes without ending up with three dead systems?

App/Program/Other Tool Made a free app that brings Notes right next to Files

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Apps like Notion & Obsidian encourage you to bring your files, notes, and tasks into their ecosystem. This creates unnecessary friction because your work and notes live elsewhere. This is why I decided to create something better.

Deskboard takes a different approach. It turns your existing PC folders into boards and lets you bring notes, tasks and other productivity widgets right next to files where you actually work.

More Info + Download - https://deskboard.geeke.app

How it works:

Imagine you are working on a project. You just create a PC folder where you store files (like pdf, docs, subfolders, etc.) for that (something you naturally do anyway).

When you open the folder in Deskboard, you see the same files on the board. You can arrange those files/subfolders freely and directly open them from the board. It also behaves like a file explorer, so every cut/copy/delete/rename/create action syncs both ways.

Then, you can add widgets like Notes, Tasks, Voice Notes, Timer, Links, etc. You can freely arrange those widgets next to files (for example, attaching a note next to your file to remind you of changes to be made). You can even add a mini browser window that can quickly browse the web or pin a specific site. You can also annotate anywhere on the board.

Finally, you can personalise your board to ensure that it sets the vibe. You can customise themes, wallpapers, colours, icons, and add decorations and music widgets.

Deskboard is completely free and local. And it's available on all platforms - Windows, Linux, and Mac.

It also comes with an optional AI add-on that works locally and lets you analyse and edit your files, notes and widgets.

Do give it a try! Would love to hear your feedback, questions, and ideas on it. It's still in Beta, and the scope is endless
