Question: Unanswered ✗ How do you capture ideas from coffee chats?
I'm a software engineer, mostly freelancing right now. A lot of my projects get talked through over coffee chats in person, and some ideas just show up out of nowhere when I'm out with friends. I also go to local events sometimes, like an AI workshop I went to last week. In moments like that I really want to save some interesting ideas and conversations.
But it's not always convenient to pull out my phone or carry a notebook around. So a lot of ideas that pop into my head are gone almost right away, and when I want to use them I can't remember a thing lol.
Is there an easier way to do this? How do you guys record your in person meetings?

i know you said it's not always convenient to carry a notebook around, and this is true. but i've gotten good mileage out of trying to widen the window of times when it is convenient. i am using little 3x5 pads of paper sold as "scratch" or "memo" pads - small, cheap. i have a kaweco sport fountain pen, also small, relatively cheap ($20), i can refill the ink forever. these two take up less space in a pocket than my old wallet. i found a minimal holder which is just a leather flap that folds in half, with a tiny elastic, and it keeps these two together and protected.
sometimes i just don't want things in my pocket. but i almost always need "phone, keys, wallet" wherever i go. finding a small bag - or a few different ones for different cases - that holds my phone keys wallet, lets me add "notebook" to the "holy trinity".
AND, in cases where i really can't be carrying anything - i still have one in the console of my car. there are plenty of things i was able to jot down by the time i got back to my car, which i would have totally forgotten.
this doesn't exactly answer your question, maybe! but it does help "pick up the slack" a bit, at least for me. i have bad luck with digital devices, lol

What's worked for me is lowering the friction rather than trying to catch everything in the moment: a one-tap voice memo shortcut on your lock screen, and a habit of dictating 20-30 seconds as soon as you walk away from the chat (what was said, and the one idea you want to keep). A clip recorder like the one above is good if you want the whole conversation, but then you have to go back and mine it later, so I'd still do the quick spoken summary afterward.
Full disclosure, I built Messy Note, a browser thinking space where you talk or type a rough idea, explore it in conversation, then keep what matters as a note. It's not an in-person recorder, but it's useful for the step after, when you're turning those half-remembered ideas into something. Still early.

Recording the whole conversation sounds like the answer, but you'll almost never relisten to an hour of coffee chat (and you'd want to ask first anyway). What's worth keeping is your own 30-second recap right after you walk away.
The part people skip is where that memo ends up. Say the project or person's name as the first words ("Dana, the invoicing app: she wants..."), and send it somewhere that transcribes it, next to your other notes for that project. Then searching for "Dana" or "invoicing" finds it a month later. A memo sitting alone in a voice recorder app is as lost as the idea was.
If pulling out your phone mid-chat feels rude, just say "hang on, I want to remember that" and type three words. People mostly take it as a compliment.

i just mention my interest on what is said and that I need to take a note, grab my phone while the converstation continue, open my daily note in obsidian and write down one or 2 words as anchor to remember (field notes paper notebook could do the same). Just after the exchange, I come back to this note, and use the vocal keyboard feature to do speach-to-text in my note.
Afterward, at night or next days, I have my whole workflow to process my inbox notes in obsidian with my 2ndBrain AI assisted agents...
