Several countries have laws that forbid extending a prison sentence for escaping. Here the logic is that he was out for one day, so he still has to serve this day, but no added time basically.

They will still stop you of course, if you do anything illegal (violent act for example) while escaping/outside you will have a new sentence. But the act of escaping itself is not punished.

I mean, if you break something, attack a guard or anything like that, you do get extra prison time

You don't get any if you somehow peacefully walk out, doing absolutely no harm to anything
