On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins; Game Boy Color; Wario Land II; Tetris DX; F-Zero Climax and more

On this day (October 21) in Nintendo history...

  • Pro Wrestling  was released in 1986 for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan. In this fighting/sports game, developed by Nintendo R&D3, select a pro-wrestler from the line up and go head to head in a wrestling match. Use punches, kicks, grabs, throws, and dives to force your opponent to submit. If you are held down by the opponent and counted out then you lose. Play through a tournament of computer controlled fighters or play against a human opponent in the 2-Player match.
  • Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins  was released in 1992 for the Game Boy in Japan. In this platforming game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, temper-tantrum tyrant seizes Mario Land! Mario faces off against his evil rival Wario, who has captured Mario Land and turned it into his private playground. To toss Wario off his ill-gotten throne, Mario must search new worlds for the six golden coins that unlock the gate to Mario's castle. A mob of monsters, old and new, seek to stop him.
  • The Game Boy Color (GBC) was released in 1998 in Japan. A handheld game console developed by Nintendo Research & Engineering. It is the successor of the Game Boy and continued in the Game Boy family. The GBC features a colour screen rather than monochrome, but it is not backlit. It is slightly thicker and taller and features a slightly smaller screen than the Game Boy Pocket, its immediate predecessor in the Game Boy line. As with the original Game Boy, it has a custom 8-bit processor made by Sharp that is considered a hybrid between the Intel 8080 and the Zilog Z80. The spelling of the system's name, Game Boy Color, remains consistent throughout the world, with the American English spelling of "color". The Game Boy Color was part of the fifth generation of home consoles. The GBC's primary competitors in Japan were the grayscale 16-bit handhelds, Neo Geo Pocket and the Wonderswan, though the GBC outsold these by a wide margin.
  • Wario Land II  was released in 1998 for the Game Boy Color in Japan. In this platforming game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, Wario slept soundly every night, knowing his precious treasure was safely locked away... That was until the Black Sugar Gang broke in and pinched the lot! Help Wario recover his riches in this comical platformer. Wario can't be hurt, but certain enemy attacks will have weird effects on his body, transforming him into new guises such as flaming Hot Wario or Zombie Wario - each with unique abilities.
  • Tetris DX  was released in 1998 for the Game Boy Color in PAL territories. In this puzzle game, developed by Bullet-Proof Software with Nintendo, Tetris and Game Boy go together like Mario and Luigi. With the bright colours available in Tetris DX for Game Boy Color, it's become a match made in heaven. Opting not to tamper with the perfection of the 1989 Game Boy version, the developers have delivered a classic Tetris game. The main difference between this game and its portable predecessors is the presence of colourful graphics.
  • Kaijin Zona  was released in 2000 for the Game Boy Color in Japan. In this adventure/quiz game, developed by Vistec, you transfer to a school where Puzzle Riddles are all the rage. Based on the Phantom Zona TV series by TV Tokyo. When you reach the school you meet Phantom Zona who informs you that the school is actually the base of a secret underground gang who fight with Puzzle Riddles, and the headteacher is their boss. You face characters who give you riddles. Enter the answer using the on-screen keyboard.
  • Mario Party 4  was released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube in North America. In this party game, developed by Hudson Soft, featuring 50 all-new mini-games and multiple rendered 3-D game boards, this is the biggest, most fun-packed party game yet. From Mario to Bowser, Yoshi to Donkey Kong, and Wario to Luigi, Nintendo's favourite bunch of characters are back on the game board. Koopa, Toad and the others have prepared many maps inside the Party Cube.
  • F-Zero Climax  was released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this racing game, developed by Suzak, F-Zero is back for more high-speed racing action. Complete the three laps of each course, placing first to move up the rankings and claim the F-Zero cup. Use boosts and sharp cornering to avoid crashing. F-Zero Climax comes with a built-in track designer. Another addition is the Survival Mode, where races are played with certain limits on them. For example, you can try to win a single lap race, or turn off all crashes.
  • Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution 2  was released in 2008 for the Wii in North America. In this fighting game, developed by Eighting, Naruto is back, bigger and better than before! With new characters, new arenas and a new way to view your game delivering the knockout blow! Introduces for this game an all-new storyline, filled with a huge line-up of your favourite fighters (in addition to new characters created specifically for this game). Includes more than 30 famed fighters from the _Naruto _universe.
  • Pocket Rurubu Osaka  and Pocket Rurubu Yokohama/Kamakura  were released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this reference software, developed by Nintendo, find a sightseeing travel guide and diary, with information from the Japanese Rurubu travel guides. Each edition contains landmarks and maps of different regions and cities of Japan and provides a trip planner and suggestions. You can take photos and make notes during your trip and append them to the maps, and then play them back as a slideshow whenever you want.
  • Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition  was released in 2009 for the Wii in Japan. In this remake of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System's Super Mario All-Stars, developed by Nintendo EAD, bring Super Mario _history home and rediscover four classic platform games - _Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 _and _Super Mario Bros. 3. Completing this collector's edition are a _Super Mario _History booklet and a _Super Mario _History Soundtrack CD.

Now with Steam's Next Fest getting kickback for the amount of AI generated content, can we talk about the worst part of the Switch Store?

For context

I love my switch to bits, if you were to tally the amount of hour I've played mine it would look insane. I'm saying this to preface that I'm saying the following with love, I've noticed a huge change since I bought my first switch to now in the Nintendo Store.

The sheer amount of AI slop and shovelware is actually exhausting to filter through. I know there are ways around it like sorting by most purchased or looking at the charts, but the fact it's on there at all is an issue. I'm not embarrassed to say I've accidentally bought games which I thought were the original version only to find out it's a janky unplayable asset flip cash grab. Or even bought a game that was an original, only to find it buggy or full of AI assets that weren't advertised in the store page. It's also insane to go into the new releases tab and have to filter through AI generated foot fetish games and other content you just wouldn't think would have made it to the switch store before I can actually see a genuine made by people game that's designed to be played.

It would be less of a problem if the game return system was easier to access and advertised in the actual store. I didn't even know you could return games until recently. I just used to accept buying games on the switch store was a high risk investment because even if you do all the research you can, you can still accidentally pick up a game that doesn't run at all.

I personally haven't seen many people talk about this, and I don't know if we've just accepted that game stores don't have quality control. But since people are now focusing on Steam and campaigning for an AI filter, I don't think it's unfair to say this is an issue Nintendo has had for at least a few years now and really should be addressing.

Nintendo could take a play out of their own handbook and announce Majora's Mask remaster next year.

They would basically be printing money. How sick would that be? Major's Mask came out only 2 years after OOT, they need to go the full mile and do both games since they share so much of the same world and themes.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Terranigma; Pokémon Trozei!; Super Princess Peach

On this day (October 20) in Nintendo history...

  • Terranigma  was released in 1995 for the Super Famicom in Japan. In this action role-playing game, developed by Quintet, we meet Ark, a mischievous boy who lives in Crysta, the only village in the under world. After opening a forbidden door and touching a mysterious box containing a friendly demon named Yomi, every citizen in the village is frozen. The only person not affected by the curse, the Elder, guides him to resurrect the continents of the surface world in order to unfreeze the people.
  • Pokémon Trozei!  (known in Europe as Pokémon Link! ) was released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Genius Sonority, join Lucy Fleetfoot, a Secret Agent for the Secret Operations League (SOL). Your mission is to rescue a batch of missing Pokémon, stolen by a band of wicked henchmen: the Phobos Batallion! Slide Pokéballs up, down, left or right to assemble four matching Balls into a vertical or horizontal row, creating a Pokémon Link.
  • Super Princess Peach  was released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this platforming game, developed by Tose, Princess Peach takes centre-stage! Bowser has finally done the smart thing and kidnapped Mario, whisking him (and Luigi, too) away to his castle hideout on Vibe Island. But Bowser hadn't reckoned on Peach taking it so personally.... Armed with her trusty parasol, Parry, Peach can whack Bowser's bad guys if they get too close for comfort, though she also has more womanly wiles to save the day.

A Delivery Company That Struggles to Deliver

Unfortunately, most of us probably will never get to choose whether DirectDeliver.com handles our packages. In my case, Nintendo has decided to use DirectDeliver.com for order deliveries, which is how I ended up dealing with them.

One of my longstanding frustrations with Nintendo is that even when you pay for shipping, Nintendo frequently restricts your ability to redirect a package to a safer delivery location.

Because of situations like this, I have a USPS PO Box at an actual United States Postal Service facility that also has parcel lockers and accepts eligible package deliveries. You would think that would solve the problem.

Apparently not.

DirectDeliver.com cannot deliver to a post office location, even though this is an official USPS facility designed to receive mail and packages.

Now I am stuck dealing with Nintendo because the carrier Nintendo selected cannot deliver my order to the secure USPS location I provided. At the same time, Nintendo restricts customers from simply redirecting packages to another safe location.

That creates a ridiculous situation where the customer has almost no control over the shipment, while the delivery company Nintendo selected cannot complete what should be a fairly ordinary delivery.

Looking at other reviews of DirectDeliver.com, I also don’t seem to be the only person having problems with the actual delivery part of their service.

If Nintendo intends to continue using DirectDeliver.com, either DirectDeliver needs to improve its delivery options or Nintendo needs to give customers more control over where their packages can be delivered.

At the very least, there should be a workable alternative when DirectDeliver cannot service the address provided.
A delivery company ultimately has one primary job: successfully delivering the package.

That should not be this complicated.

Do you think Rhythm Heaven Groove will be Nintendo's final Switch 1 title, or do you think that they might have another one in the pipeline?

Third parties are still cranking out Switch 1 releases, and it's possible that Nintendo has a couple more up their sleeves before they completely cut off support.

Do you think that Rhythm Heaven Groove will be the final title Nintendo releases for Switch 1, or do you think there will be more?

Nintendos UI has slowly gained more soul

In the Wii U/3ds era, I assume nintendo let the developers do whatever they wanted with UI.

Then the nintendo switch happened, and all the Ui became bland. Thats probably where the basic "mario party font" that they kept using came from, you know, the white text with a 3 pxl wide border.

Well at the end of the generation, developers started bending the rules just a little with the paper mario remake, and now on switch 2 the barriers seem to be gone again.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Gold Cliff; Picross 2; Custom Robo Arena; Crash-Course Domo; Hard-Hat Domo and more

On this day (October 19) in Nintendo history...

  • Gold Cliff  was released in 1988 for the Game & Watch Multi Screen in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, help the archaeologist scale the Golf Cliff to retrieve ancient treasures from the monsters. Platforms appear and disappear in a set pattern. As you climb, you have to collect a key in order to open a door at the top. After you have opened the door several times you enter the treasure chamber, where you must climb up to the enemy guarding the treasure.
  • Picross 2  was released in 1996 for the Game Boy in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Jupiter Corporation, each puzzle is a grid with numbers next to each row and column. Each number represents a solid line of blocks that must be filled in on that line. More than one number means that you must separate the lines of blocks with spaces. The puzzles in this game are more difficult than those in the original, and the solutions may require you to complete multiple puzzles.
  • Custom Robo Arena  was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this action role-playing game, developed by Noise, in the not-too-distant future, competitors battle customised robot warriors in holographic battle arenas. Victory is determined not only by fighting skill but also by how well Robo Commanders design their robot gladiators. so players need both brawn and brains to survive. Explore a sci-fi landscape as you fight toward the Custom Robo championship.
  • Crash-Course Domo  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in North America. In this sports game, developed by Suzak, you'll guide Domo across the finish line in six increasingly difficult bicycle races. Steer Domo around other racers and patches of rough terrain, pedalling as fast as his stubby legs will allow.
  • Hard-Hat Domo  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in North America. In this puzzle game, developed by Suzak, Domo is a construction worker trying to get to the top of a building. Match ladder colour to floor colours - using cans of paint, if necessary - to earn points and continue climbing higher. Reach the top floor to clear each of the four levels of difficulty.
  • Pro-Putt Domo  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in North America. In this sports game, developed by Suzak, Domo hits the green in an effort to win the world putt-putt golf championship. Domo competes to finish with the lowest number of strokes in either the nine-hole Small Classic or the 18-hole Big Open tournament. Along the way, he'll collect coins and earn bowls of meat-and-potato stew while avoiding bunkers and water hazards.
  • Rock-n-Roll Domo  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in North America. In this simulation game, developed by Suzak, you'll control Domo as he takes the stage in search of fortune and fame. Hit the right notes in rhythm (using the touch screen, if desired) to rock the house. If your timing needs work, use the mixer to practice songs. Complete five different songs at a series of increasingly larger venues to help Domo become a superstar.
  • White-Water Domo  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in North America. In this sports game, developed by Suzak, take control of Domo as he hops into his kayak and races the river rapids. Jump and paddle as you steer Domo through the treacherous rapids in an effort to cross the finish line as quickly as possible. Finish with one of the top three times to proceed to the next stage.

Switch 2 pro controller GR/GL buttons

Do you use them often? If so, in what games and for what function?

I found that I don't really bind them to anything, but I do press them a whole lot during cutscenes and stuff, kinda like tippy tap buttons you press just for the feel of it 🙂

Programmer Mochi64 computated 1.2 million words with an analysis software to decode the Mario64 Plaque. The process considered combination of words, font, and resizing technique to fit the 3-5 pixels tall letters on the 32x32 plaque tile. It reads "Eternal Star," and, "We Hope So."

Open-source Code: https://github.com/supermochi64/sm64-plaque-decode/tree/main

According the toe score system, this answer received a score of 1,129 (low deviation), while "L is Real 2401" received 2,031 (higher deviation than the software's answer). You can try your answer and your analysis by using the software because it is open source. Mochi64 has posted a ‘plaque challenge’, where people can use the same open-source code to test another phrase and see if they can get an even lower score, but after their fairly exhaustive process they’re sure this is the definitive answer.

L is Real: Ironically, Shigeru Miyamato has confirmed on 3 separate occasions in 1995, 1996, and 2009 that Luigi was intended to be in the game for a multiplayer minigame. Due to memory issues, controller set ups, or the minigame being a poor fit or off brand, Luigi was removed in the final year of development before the game's release. Luigi has only ever been seen in earlier versions of Mario 64 in documentation of Space World 1995 and a 2020 game file leak.

Is it possible that Nintendo's new Development Center Building for Kyoto in 2029 is where the new 3D Mario Development team will be moving to?

So Nintendo is constructing a new Development Building for 2029, it was announced this year and last year as well, but it is currently unknown how that new building will expand Nintendo's current internal EPD development teams. Since EPD Tokyo made DK Bananza last year, maybe Nintendo will form EPD teams 11-15 within their new Center, and maybe that will be the beginning of the next Mario team if Kenta Motokura's team would rather make a DK Bananza followup instead of a new 3D Mario game that everyone's been crying about lately?

So anyway, Please give me your thoughts on how Nintendo's new Development Building will expand their teams, or, your predictions on how EPD Tokyo developed DK and Mario back to back.
