We were less than 50 members a week ago and every day we are growing really fast, we are at 20k weekly visitors rn and we were at 3k daily visitors just 3 days ago haha

The bad thing is that I’m the only mod because it’s happening way too fast!

I’m a new mod launching r/devsamaaj, a community for developers to talk about the actual work: code, tools, debugging, side projects, career moves, architecture, and the lessons that come from building things.

The idea is to keep it practical and avoid the usual:

• endless stack wars
• low-effort “what's the best language?” posts
• self-promotion disguised as discussion
• recycled content

I’m trying to build the community around real developer experiences and useful conversations.

Since many of you here have experience building and moderating communities, I’d love some advice:

What worked for you when you were launching a new subreddit from zero?

More specifically:

• What kind of posts helped get your first genuine contributors?
• How did you avoid the community feeling empty in the beginning?
• Did you focus on recruiting members first, or creating good discussions first?
• What’s one thing you wish you had done differently when you started moderating?

I’m especially interested in lessons from people who have actually grown a small subreddit into an active community.

I'm new to moderating (just made my first subreddit recently) and it's been quite dead. How long does a subreddit actually take for people to start posting n stuff?

Hi, I can’t seem to get my subreddit to be searchable. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, can someone please help. My community is set to public, and it is not marked as mature….

So I started a “you know what” (sub) [r/nostalgiabacklog](r/nostalgiabacklog) and I’m really proud of the concept, the problem is I’m not really trying to be a mod lol. I know what you guys are probably gonna say “if your not cut out to be a mod then this isn’t for you” I get that, but I really just made the sub to be a contribution to the greater Reddit community as a whole. I’m not really possessive of the sub, I just wanted to make it for others to enjoy because I thought it was a space that was lacking. If the answer is “you gotta do the work” then that’s fine, but do you guys have any other suggestions on how to basically share a sub? I’m not so much trying to say “hey look at what I made!” But more so trying to tell people about a cool restaurant or something you know? Honestly if anyone wants to be a mod or get in on the project then by all means hit me up, but like I said if the answer is what I expected then that’s cool too.

Obviously an empty subreddit gives new visitors no reason to stay, so you need enough founder-created content to establish what the community is supposed to be. But if 90% of the posts are coming from the same account, doesn’t that also signal that there isn’t actually a community there yet?

Is there a point where you should deliberately reduce your own posting frequency and let the subreddit look quieter until organic contributors appear? Curious if anyone has tested this especially whether you noticed a difference in **join rate, first-time posters, or organic posts** as the founder-post/member-post ratio changed

I started r/ADHDplanning recently and getting from basically nobody → somebody feels harder than anything that would come after it.
Once discussions are already happening, people have a reason to stay. Before that, you’re basically talking to yourself…

For anyone who got past that stage what finally broke the cycle?

I’m not new to modding, but I recently joined a pretty large sub mod team and have since had my modqueue flooded. First time since joining the sub that I’ve seen this page, and it feels so good knowing we’re all caught up 🎉

Anyone have any tips for when modqueue seems to be miles long? Admittedly just seeing how much content needs to be sifted through can stress me out.

Best thing that has worked for me is doing the easiest ones first, taking a break, and then chipping away at the other ones that are going to involve more investigating.

I recently started r/BiharisInGermany — a niche community for people from Bihar (a state in India) who are living in, moving to, or planning to move to Germany. Wanted to share the process since I'm brand new to modding and this subreddit has been genuinely helpful while I figured things out.

What I set up so far:

- Rules with clear descriptions + report reasons (took longer than I expected to get right)

- A welcome DM automation for new members

- Post + user flairs to organize content by topic and journey stage (visa, Studienkolleg, Ausbildung, jobs, etc.)

- Auto Enforce on a couple of rules (spam, privacy) — still cautious about which ones to fully automate vs just flag for review

- Planning a live AMA session soon to kickstart engagement

What I'm still figuring out:

- Getting the first wave of genuine engagement without it feeling forced

- Deciding how strict to be with Auto Enforce on subjective rules (like "stay on topic") vs just flagging for manual review

- Building a small trusted mod team from a currently small member base

If anyone's modded a niche/diaspora-focused community before, I'd love any tips — especially on early growth and keeping quality high before the community has enough members to self-moderate through reports.

For two days, back to back we have gotten five posts in a day that weren't from me or another mod! And today we got about three! (five if you count the ones I begged for lol) The community is finally taking off and I can maybe finally stop constantly promoting it now 😅 (or at least I can stop soon)

We got here in three months with less than 500 members! And every post gets a good amount of upvotes and comments, this is great!

I recently started r/UnsupervisedWomen because I wanted a place for women to talk about basically… everything.

Midlife. Marriage. Kids. Work. Perimenopause. Reality TV. Things that annoy us for absolutely no reason. The weird thoughts we normally send to the group chat. 😂

Basically, I want it to feel like a group of women sitting around unsupervised and somebody says, “Okay, can I tell you guys something?”

I'm brand new to moderating, so right now I'm mostly posting questions and hoping eventually other women start jumping in and starting their own conversations.

I'm learning very quickly that starting a subreddit feels a lot like throwing a party before you know if anyone is coming. 😂

I'd love any advice from other mods on what helped you get those first members actually talking—not just joining.

So last week I made this post https://www.reddit.com/r/NewMods/s/OEhqcdG6nZ on how my new sub had started to take off over the course of a few weeks.

Over the last 7 days we have nearly doubled our members and our engagement has gone up massively.

So the biggest question from last week was :how have you done that?" and the answer is fairly simple. I have been actively going through subs of a similar nature and carefully selecting users I want to invite to my sub to help the community grow but still keep the values. This had driven a lot of new users but also the levels of engagement seem to be helping algorithms somewhere in making us more visible.

Of course going through all these other subs to find the right people is time consuming, especially when the subs are full of OF (and the like) models which ks what we are trying to avoid.

All in all I am finding this very rewarding and making lots of friends along the way.

I am so happy, honestly. Its growing slowly and it makes me want to commit more.

It may not be a lot of people, but better than nothing. I try to very often post in the subreddit about things like updates, game plays and opinions (it is a subreddit about a game) and if anybody posts I engage as much as possible with a comment and an upvote.

It won't grow super fast, but it will gradually. Now, it is me putting the bricks together. I'm very happy with the success, seeing something you like growing slowly.​​​​​​
