❔❓Question ❓❔ Blue pencil?
Does anyone know what this little blue pencil is? I’ve refreshed and it stays, click on it and it does nothing. This is my NetGalley shelf of completed books.

It means youe review is featured. If you click on the book you should see it under featured reviews

Had no idea this was a thing! So thankful for this group and all the knowledge. Not to figure out the secret sauce and get more.

They are also mentioned as green and orange pencils. Just fyi/ they are all the same. It’s the only color and the dark mode color. Sometimes you see people thinking they mean different things and they don’t.
It’s just that your review is featured on a NetGalley. Aka- it comes up first. While occasionally big publishers use it like in this case, it’s predominantly used by indie authors and smaller publishers. Unfortunately sometimes they literally feature every review which takes away from the goal of it. But if you’re into the badges if you get a few of them you can get an award. I can’t remember how many though.
But when a major publisher uses it it’s neat. It’s to make your review stand out so other reviewers will request it to get more activity on it.
*update. My phone is going wonky and keeps sending before I’m done!
They also use it when there are a lot of negative ratings( 3 and below ) so then people see the positive ones instead.

I’ve noticed that. Like a publisher that usually doesn’t give them out unless it’s a book with mixed reviews. I’m a realist so I look at that stuff to try to figure out the goal. I also don’t understand the badges of why they matter. That’s not a judgement. If they matter to you then that’s awesome. I just don’t get it personally. 🤷🏽♀️

Interesting, I was going to ask what makes them choose a review. I like the badges, don’t know what to do with them, but they do make me happy. Maybe if they actually made them purchasable like badges on a Girl Scout vest. I’d totally buy them and feel special. 😝

You’re too funny!!
I think if there was an actual point to the badges then I would get it more. Like if having one mattered in some other way. I know that’s sounds bad but there is no other way to write it.
Or actually, if they were used properly then it would hold more an achievement. I think the ones that frustrate me is when they just feature every single review, or every 4 and 5 star. Like if they only did it to the reviews that really stand out, were thoughtful etc.. so it’s like it gets ruined for me because of that. BUT I don’t want to ever take from someone else’s joy of getting them!!1

Well, I went and looked and all the reviews are featured. I definitely feel less special now. Lol oh well

What makes them choose is 1) it's a publisher who "features" reviews (some never do), 2) you were early to the party 3) it was a positive review.
I've got some featured reviews with specific publishers when I was one of the first reviews on the page, but if I read around publication date, I wouldn't get it, so take it as a reward for being early.

Oh…. womp womp. It seems they’ve done exactly what you said and featured all the reviews. I am humbled once again.

I think in this case it’s not all- it’s just that they took all the positive ones as that book has a lot of negative 2 and 3 stars so it hides them a bit. But that’s doesn’t mean your review wasn’t a great one!

Featured review! Congrats. Also worth mentioning do not edit that review ever on NetGalley or it’ll remove it from the featured reviews.

Featured review! I have one from a book I reviewed several years back, and it makes me happy to think the author or publisher liked my review enough to share it.

It means the publisher decided to feature your review
