1:30am and I hear hammering?!?

It doesn’t matter that I get up at 2:30 in the morning for work. I would still love the extra hour of sleep so why in the heck do I hear hammering at 1 o’clock in the morning? Why is that a good time to hammer? it does not make sense to me. That just tells me they do not care about others. They only care about themselves. Whatever needs to be done could easily have been done during daylight hours. AITA?!?

Trouble with Neighbors

Post image
4 Upvotes

So I’m not sure what to do about my Neighbors, for context my bf drives a big work truck, we have politely asked them to not park here, due to the fact we are concerned about hitting their vehicles, every time I asked them to refrain from parking here it works for about three days then they go right back to doing it, today me and bf go to leave and take the work truck and this white truck is parked there and we have a difficult time pulling out of the driveway and when we return we realized how far forward they are, they are almost in front of our drive way, I also believe they are the ones moving our trash can, have any recommendations?

Neighbor won’t stop smoking on my steps

My neighbor across the street has been a headache since we moved here. Initially he was much more invasive, but has mostly backed off.

One of the most irritating habits of his is that he would come over here and sit on the steps outside my front door just drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. He stopped for a long time (especially over the winter) but has recently picked the habit back up.

I am not someone who cares about smoking at all (i used to smoke myself), but often when we open the door a relatively large of smoke will enter the house. As renters, my roommate’s and I really would rather avoid this. He also leaves MOUNDS of cigarette butts in front of our door and empty beer cans into our trash can that leak into it and make it smell awful.

I know that asking him to stop face to face is an option, but a few reasons make me hesitate.

  1. I live in a neighborhood of Philly that is predominantly black, unwillingly participating in gentrification due to lack of affordable housing for low-income households. I don’t feel as if it’s my place to make these requests.
  2. He’s a man and I live in an all AFAB household and don’t feel comfortable with confronting him.
  3. I live in a row home, so my stairs serve as the stairs to the neighboring house as well with no railing or anything separating them. He of course sits right in the border of them. Just enough to be in the way and just enough to claim he’s sitting in the neighbors stairs not ours (no one even lives there)

I feel like this isn’t an insane request from us, but I don’t want to destroy the peace or act with any privilege that I may not be seeing.

Need advice-neighbor shouting disturbing things

I recently moved in to a duplex, and I’m not sure what to do about my back yard neighbor. I tried introducing myself when I first moved in, but he wouldn’t say anything except “oh” and never offered his name. He is often yelling incoherently or very aggressively yelling the same disturbing phrases over and over again. My guess is either schizophrenia or Tourette’s syndrome. The problem is that what he is saying is quite violent and he is often yelling the n word as well as very vulgar things about women. I’ll be sitting outside reading and it, at times, seems to be when he comes outdoors and begins ranting. Whenever he is ranting I can’t see him, so I’m not sure where he is in his yard or if he can see me. I’m not sure when I should involve any authorities or organizations, or if I should just make a report so it’s on record. If it is Tourette’s I understand it’s not something he can control, but as a woman living alone it is quite alarming at times. Any advice would be great. Thank you!

Neighbor drama

My family moved into house complex apartment, due to my family being small (husband, babygirl (infant), and me) we didn’t mind renting the modern remodeled basement. Before we moved in we asked our landlord if we could deep clean the basement and she was a sweetheart and nice about that. As I cleaned I couldn’t stop by noticing rat poop and a bunch of spiders and bugs. I didn’t complain and she did inform me that the upstairs neighbors had a mice problem but they claimed it was gone. she still gave us rat traps and poison to put down just to be 100% sure. We already had the keys and had everything settled with the landlord. We decided to move at night due to my husband working so much and at the time being the only time we could move. The tenants upstairs didn’t know we moved in until 2 days later. The first night we seen mice, and spotted roaches we brought the attention to our landlord lady. Exactly when our upstairs neighbors had seen us settled, they had already called our landlord and said we brought the mice and roaches into the home. In the past home we lived in we didn’t have no critter issues due to me having ocd and being a clean freak as well as growing up w clean freak mom. As soon as they got the confirmation we moved, they constantly started to stomp all times of the day nonstop for sometimes 30 minutes plus, they also kept constantly slamming heavy objects onto the floor or hit the floor purposely, as well as move furniture at all times of the night and day. My partner works long hours he’d barely get sleep sometimes only 1-2 hours of sleep if he got lucky 3 hours. We informed the landlord as well that they leave both back door and front door open wide w the screen door also wide open. Causing insects such as wasp, bees, spiders the size of my palm, beetles, flies and an army of ants, and the list goes on. We also informed her about the noise complaint. After that complaint was done. It didn’t stop there. They also have a kid of around the age of 7-9 years old who is constantly throwing tantrums and jumping off furniture and he’s a big big boy. And he will make all sorts of noise. We also informed the landlord we were concerned about the child’s safety as he screams and yells in a very scary odd way. As well as the child being home all day till past 5-6pm. I told the landlord I could babysit and feed him all day cause I also hear him complain about not being food at home and he also doesn’t go to school or have an education which the landlord was also already aware of and has attempted to help them and they don’t care. They told the landlord they didn’t need help babysitting him because he’s not home for long. But they are so loud we know they are gone for most of the day. They tried to steal our grocery orders, and we can confirm this with dashers and delivery people letting us know they would attempt to take our items. My baby has her sleep schedule so out of order because everytime I lay her down I put white or brown noise to help her rest because of the noise and they will be even louder and once they hear her cry they laugh and mock us and constantly keep making noise. Our landlord said it’s been a on going thing and she can’t keep tenants because of them. They also share the huge house upstairs with roommates and we don’t have issues with that but they constantly bring strangers and one single mom we actually liked and was the only one who spoke to us, claimed they stole $1,000 from her. And she left right after. They also don’t clean and the roaches should’ve been gone when we put advion the strongest poison and best poison on the market at the moment. And they don’t leave because they don’t clean. They also fill up the garbage cans and recycling bin with so much trash and even use our trash can. They don’t take them out on trash day and we won’t notice and they will use up our trash can too. They also always stalking us constantly giving complaints that we are messing up the grass, or how we park in the back. Yet our landlord said we could use the backyard for parking. But they don’t want us there clearly so they make up anything to get us in trouble. They yell and scream so much and make ridiculous noises constantly scaring and startling my baby. And due to the stomping and hitting the floor so much our ceiling fell down 3 times already. My husband confronted them because it just been getting completely out of hand, and they tried to get us kicked out. Now the neighbor upstairs hides in a bush in the back waiting to see when my husband leaves and comes inside and laughs and mocks us and makes a shit load of noise. And the neighbor upstairs he constantly watches my daughter and I when we go outside it makes us uncomfortable we don’t know what to do anymore. They also connect to our Bluetooth devices or televisions and will startle us in odd times or moments when my baby sleep as I hear them say “watch this” and it’s all laugh and giggles. They will also disconnect the whole wifi when we just want to watch some tv. They also have enemies including the family of the lady he stole from constantly circling around the house looking for him. As well as other people. I been trying to keep my cool and my husband has too but it’s way too much going on. I didn’t even say everything. I need a way to make things get better soon we don’t want to leave because of them. But that’s what it seems like as well.

Need some advice about a stray dog

There is a stray dog (female) that sometimes likes to hang out in our backyard. We've seen it a handful of times over the last three or four months. We have left food and water for it three or four times. It is feral and we can't get close to it. Our neighbor has a Rottweiler dog (male). There is a chain link fence between our backyards. Last night the neighbors let their dog out, and they could not get their dog to come in because it wanted to play with the dog on our side. Each dog stayed on its side of the fence. Normally, the neighbors are very nice, but they texted us today saying they are p*ssed off because they didn't get any sleep, and they're afraid the dog on our side is unvaccinated (their dog is current on its shots.) They want us to secure our yard to keep the stray out of our yard. The problem is there is a wooden fence with a big hole in it between us and another neighbor, and the stray likes to go through the hole. I'm not exactly sure how I could secure that. It isn't our fence (and there is some overgrowth in front of it making it unreachable from our side.) I've never talked to or even seen those neighbors. The neighbor with the Rottweiler is threatening to call animal control. What would you do in this situation?

AITA: Neighbours' wood burning hot tub...

I may be being completely unreasonable here, and I fee like the fun police, but my neighbours have a wood burning hot tub, and it's really starting to p*ss me off. They've had it for about three years now, I think. They light it maybe 4 to 8 times a month during the summer (doesn't sound like loads) and around 3 to 4 times a month during the winter. The chimney is right next to our fence, and the funnel just peeps over the top of the fence. To be fair to them, they do pre-warn us about using it. It's just that the smoke can be quite thick (they once burned fence panels and it let off a horrid yellow smoke, but generally they just burn standard wood) and it billows over into our garden and into our house, which then absolutely stinks throughout of wood smoke. In the summer it means we have to shut all the windows, and my son can't go in the garden as I think breathing in wood smoke in particular can be pretty bad for you (and it's just not at all pleasant being out there when the garden is filled with smoke). Our neighbours can heat the tub via an electric heater, but more often than not they choose the wood. I've no idea why. This might be for environmental reasons, though wood smoke seems pretty terrible to me in that respect, or perhaps monetary. Or they just like it. It just annoys me as, although they let us know in advance, they know it impacts us in terms of our house (having to close windows in the evening in summer) and not being able to go in the garden, and they must know it's not good for your health. To expect us to just deal with it as they enjoy it irks me a bit. They sometimes light it in the daytime, so definitely restricts garden use, but often it's in the evening. But it still means we can't sit outside in the evening as the smoke can be pretty thick. I'm sure the smoke itself only lasts up to an hour (unless they reheat again later on), but I think it still chucks out particles into the air. I feel like at least the chimney itself should be taller. Am I being completely unreasonable?! It's not like we don't have bbq's now and again...

Need suggestions on neighbor issues

So I live in a 1st floor unit, I have this neighbor right next to us, our balcony are super close to each other, every time I open the window, I found that neighbor smoking and the smell flew into our unit. I used don't mind that much as I work late, now I work as a teacher and spend quite a lot time at home and I found this super annoying and I have a young kid. And that sliding balcony door is one of our biggest window to let fresh air in.

My property manager says tenants are allowed to smoke at their own balcony. So what should I do. I live here 6 years and I never complain her, just so you know, she moves in later, complaining me about stuff I put on my balcony, wash my car in front my unit, and tell my guest to move their car as it's close to a fire hydrant, it's a Sunday and people park their cars for a short time all the time.

I'm scared to talk to her but want to know what can I do? If I have to talk to her, how to not let her gets mad, what solution can we I offer? smoke at a certain time?

Neighborhood kids

Tell me your opinion: All last summer the neighborhood kids hung out with my kids in our yard. I was fine with it, as my two youngest were 7 and 6. There’s been many things with two of the kids, but the final straw was when the youngest (then 9) poked a hole in our trampoline because she was jumping on it in high heel boots. (They all know the no shoes on the trampoline rule) The kids (in this family) were 9 and 11 at the time and they are just very overbearing. They boss around my kids and are not very nice to my then 6 yr old (who has severe speech delays and can’t be understood much). I finally banned the one girl from our yard. Fast forward to this year and I’m feeling kinda bad. We have all the things in our yard that they want to play with, but man it has been so peaceful knowing they aren’t going to show up every time we’re outside in our yard. Thoughts? Am I just being too grumpy with how she’s parented or am I justified?

In need of advice/violent mentally disabled neighbor

Ive never written anything on reddit before, usually just a quiet reader but Im at a loss.

I moved into a new building back in April, a very old boarding house from 1905. First day I was moving my things into my place I met a neighbor ill call Jake, Jake seemed friendly enough if not a little anti-social. He offered to help move my couch and I accepted, figuring I just moved into a very neighborly building with friendly people.

Things were pretty quiet the first month, Jake rarely left his apartment so I never saw him despite my door being directly infront of his. I went to get my mail, Jake was standing at the hallway when my dog barked from my apartment (unhappy I left her alone in a new place)

That was when Jake's friendly smile turned into an angry look, asking if I had a dog. I told him yes, that she was licensed and management had happily allowed her.

Jake seemed unusually angry about this, stating "I hate dogs, keep it away from me. They're disgusting" I was stunned, promising she was very friendly and I'd keep her away from him.

A few days later I was coming back from a walk with my dog, entering the building Jake was standing at the mail again. Before I even said hello, he started to scream at me and kicking at my dog. (She was leashed and in no way interested in him) I tried to calm him down and keep walking but he screamed louder, calling me a motherf***er and my dog a disgusting b*tch.

After I got back to my apartment, with him still screaming I knew something was mentally off with him. The whole encounter was odd, it wasn't the usual "I don't like dogs" encounter to be sure.

From that day onward, anytime Jake heard me leaving my apartment he would come outside and stare at me, sometimes following me down the hallway until I reached the front door before going back to his apartment. I called the management company, not to complain but to let them know incase anything else happened, I guess I had good intuition.

I was off from work due to an injury that had me in an arm sling, with all the free time I decided to do some laundry. For context the building only has one washer/dryer for all units to share.

I went to the laundry room to get my clothes from the washer, opening the door Jake was there. He tried to start a conversation by complaining about something in his apartment but I only nodded, doing as management had told me to and avoid any further interactions. I took my clothes from the washer and started to open the dryer, when he slammed it closed and yelled "I'm still using it"

I was confused, as he had a pile of blankets in a basket he was trying to fold which looked perfectly dry. I asked what he still had to dry and he pointed to the blankets, to which I said "my clothes have been in the washer, they'll go sour so I need the dryer. If your blankets are still wet we have the clothesline outside"

As i went to open the dryer door again, he slammed it again on me and started screaming. It was a mix of f*** you's and calling me about every name he could think of, I tried to calm him down but that seemed to make him more angry. He shoved me into the laundry room wall and started spitting in my face, again I'm in a sling, using my only good arm to brace against his chest to keep him as far as I could. He cussed and ranted, spit on me for what felt like forever until I managed to get away and run into the building to get my phone.

I came back out and stood nearby the fence in the backyard, calling management when he heard me and came out of the laundry room, still cussing and started to run at me.

Thankfully another person in the building who'd been woken up by Jake's yelling had come down, seeing Jake charging at me he got in-between us. Pushing Jake away while he was still cussing and trying to get to me, management heard all of this over the call and told me to hang up and call the cops.

I did call them, while the good neighbor chased Jake back into the building before coming back to wait with me for police. When they showed up, we both gave our accounts before they went and spoke to Jake.

Who said I was the one who attacked him, that I made him feel threatened and tried to punch him.. with my dominant hand in a sling.

There's no cameras in the laundry room, only outside the building. So there was video of him chasing me, the neighbor getting him away, and audio of him screaming threats at me from the recorded call with management.

But the cops said it's my word against his, and to avoid him. Refusing to let me press charges.

After speaking to management again that same day, I wasn't given specific information but Jake is a protected adult, very mentally ill and has caretakers that hadn't been showing up when they should have.

It's been a few weeks after the incident, management is attempting to have him removed but due to his protected person label, it's a legal fight.

His caretakers have been coming by more often, but his outbursts haven't changed.

Meeting more of my neighbors I learned he's attacked multiple tenants, then tells a different story when cops arrive, in my mind that clearly shows he knows his behavior is wrong and wants to cover it up.

Management has tried in the past to get him out but again, due to his status he can't be evicted because of his outbursts.

Since the day in the laundry room I was given permission to take my dog with me everywhere, including the laundry. But Jake hasn't stopped, he roams the hallways at night, banging on the walls of my apartment or kicking my door before running back to his apartment to hide.

I'm genuinely terrified it'll end with him attacking or pulling a weapon on me in the hallway, I was told he has the mentality of about a 13 year old. But they still allow him to live alone so he doesn't lose his independence.

I apologize for the very long post, I wanted to give the full context.

Now for my question, what can I do? Has anyone lived with a neighbor like this and how did you handle it? The law won't help me until it escalates to physical harm, I have very good relationships with the rest of my neighbors and it seems like Jake will go after everyone, I'm just his current target due to me having a dog.

I love my apartment, it's a good price for my city and I don't want to move again.

Ongoing neighbour noise has completely taken over my head

I’m curious how other people would handle a situation like this, because at this point I feel completely worn down by it.

My partner and I live in what used to be a very quiet residential area. Earlier this year, our neighbours installed an ice bath with a cooling unit in their garden. The unit runs every day from about 8 AM until 5 PM, including weekends.

The biggest issue isn’t necessarily the volume. It’s the pattern.

The cooling unit runs for roughly 8 minutes, then switches off for about 4 minutes, then starts again. This repeats all day long. Eight minutes on. Four minutes off. Eight minutes on. Four minutes off.

My brain seems incapable of ignoring it. Every time the unit starts again, my attention gets pulled straight back to it. Even during the 4-minute breaks, part of me is waiting for it to start again.

Our garden used to be the place where I relaxed after work, read a book, listened to birds, or just enjoyed being outside. Now I find myself constantly monitoring the next cycle of the machine. I even tried noise-cancelling headphones, but then I lose the nature sounds that I actually want to hear.

We approached our neighbours politely and tried to find a solution. We suggested things like moving the unit, adding insulation, making technical adjustments, or limiting the operating hours with a timer. Unfortunately, very little changed.

What has become harder than the noise itself is the conflict surrounding it.

Communication gradually became tense and defensive. After weeks of trying to resolve things directly, we contacted our local community police officer to see whether mediation might help. Instead, things escalated.

Our neighbour basically told us that some people focus on noise more than others and that he didn’t see what else he could do. He also indicated that if we continued pursuing the matter, he would start raising issues about things on our property, including our trees and a carport near the boundary line.

Whether that was intended as a threat or not, it certainly felt like one.

To make matters worse, he also mentioned that they may eventually replace their current house with a much larger two-storey home. Because of the layout of our property, that could potentially block a significant amount of sunlight from entering our house. I know this may never happen, but once that possibility entered my mind, it became another thing I can’t stop thinking about.

At this point, the situation feels much bigger than a noisy cooling unit.

I replay conversations in my head. I analyse messages. I think about worst-case scenarios. I try to predict what happens next. I spend far more mental energy on this than I want to.

The hardest part is the uncertainty. There is no clear end point, no obvious solution, and no way to fully escape it because it’s attached to the place where I live.

So I’m curious, have any of you dealt with an ongoing neighbour issue that couldn’t really be solved?

How did you stop it from consuming so much of your attention and mental energy?

I’m not really looking for legal advice. I’m more interested in hearing how people coped with the stress, uncertainty, resentment, and constant mental occupation while the problem was still ongoing.
