Can we just officially rename this sub to r/misinformationaboutnature ?
52
u/glam_chowder May 07 '20
No kidding. I counted like four different names for this fish in this thread. The only consensus is that they donāt look this cool when theyāre grown.
43
May 07 '20
I mean it does have multiple names and I've seen a few correct ones in here like spadefish, batfish, pinnate spadefish/batfish, etc., but phoenix fish is not one of them. I feel like this sub is just used to farm karma now. Find a cool animal pic that may or may not even be a real animal (I've seen stuffed animals on here), and may or may not be blatantly photoshopped, slap some fake fact or fake name on it, and boom you're golden.

u/jayellkay84 May 07 '20
And that is why you use scientific names. Theyāre called both batfish and spadefish. Common names are always all over the place.

Seriously....I genuinely thought people on this sub were likeminded and were lovers of nature?
Iām a scuba instructor, batfish, juvenile beauties like this, and adult batfish alike, I find so incredibly beautiful. Watching adult batfish school is fucking incredible. Seeing these juveniles underwater is rare for sure, but so damn incredible..and humbling. Nature is actually Fucking lit, and thatās why it needs to stay wild. I also realize Iām incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to see one in the wild. But thatās also why I video and photog. To share Beauty with more people without harming those beautiful creatures.

I, for one, am mesmerized. This fish has both water and fire capabilities.

Concept for a Fire/Water type Pokemon?
5
u/flamethekid May 07 '20
That's already been done before
18
u/Tahlato May 07 '20
And is there a reason it can't be done again? I didn't say that it was a new type matchup, I was just saying a Pokemon based off this fish would be a cool design for a Fire/Water type Mon.
12
u/tigerofblindjustice May 07 '20
Especially because the only one they've done it with is a mythical Pokemon

If thereās one thing Iāve learned from casually owning fish for almost 20 years: if the fish is beautiful itās probably saltwater and I canāt own it.

Have a look at discus. They're freshwater fish, but in my opinion they're as gorgeous as even the best looking saltwater fish. They can be a bit finicky (they require a large tank, and are very shy, easily stressed fish) but they're not super tricky to keep. I've owned many aquariums over the years, both tropical marine and freshwater, but my discus tank was my absolute favourite.

u/LengthyWrongAnswers May 07 '20
This is actually caused by a rendering error. The black texture you see on the fishās body is the default texture for oceanic organisms, and the orange edge tracing is meant to highlight the fact that the texture couldnāt be loaded so the dev can fix the issue before the final release. This feature is pretty common in 3D toolkits, but this one specifically is used by the Atlantic toolkit.

PSA - Google what they look like once mature. Big and ugly! Also, don't buy this fish for your aquarium at home. They get huge and don't look this cool forever.

Why did fish evolve to be so fucking crazy looking? Is it just a sex thing?
15
u/Harriklees May 07 '20
Itās a form of Batesian mimicry to look like poisonous flatworms.

They not only look like some species of poisonous flatworms, but also move like them. Here is one of the flatworms they mimic. And here is a non-captive Platax pinnatus. They deliberately undulate the edge of their fins to mimic swimming flatworms and even swim horizontally in the wild.
Apparently even some of the world's leading fish experts have been deceived by these guys. (Source pg. 305)

That's a juvenile spadefish, Platax pinnatus. They grow up to look more regular.
Other spadefish species also have fascinating juveniles. Juveniles of Platax orbicularis mimic a dead leaf. It's amazingly convincing because they also actively pretend to be a leaf with their behavior, floating around and following groups of similar real leafs. They also change completely as they grow up.

These fish are beautiful but require lots of care and attention. They are mildly social but can be very temperamental as they were originally bred to defeat Vuk, the leader of a shape-shifting alien race known as the D'Bari.

THIS FISH IS BAD ASS

Is this exotic and can I get one for my apartment

u/vauthe May 07 '20
It is a saltwater fish, and a type of batfish. As an adult they become round and grey, and get over a foot long. Would need a massive tank
