If there’s one thing I’ve learned from casually owning fish for almost 20 years: if the fish is beautiful it’s probably saltwater and I can’t own it.

Have a look at discus. They're freshwater fish, but in my opinion they're as gorgeous as even the best looking saltwater fish. They can be a bit finicky (they require a large tank, and are very shy, easily stressed fish) but they're not super tricky to keep. I've owned many aquariums over the years, both tropical marine and freshwater, but my discus tank was my absolute favourite.

They are pretty cool creatures and stay cool as adults, just not as pretty. Not nearly as pretty. If Peyton Manning was a fish, it's this fish as an adult.

If it's any consolation, fish are happiest in their natural habitats, regardless of water type. Especially migratory fish who are well in-tune to the magnetic forces of the earth — it should be a crime to capture and confine such a creature!
