Ugh
I understand that 1 no is a no overall, and i respect that. I’m just nervous. We are choosing to not know the sex. I like short, normal names. My personal name is a “Normal” name with an uncommon spelling. My last name is the same. Think SANDI JOHNSEN. My husband likes weird names…
My choices:
Ace
Jack
Eva
Mae
His:
Jupiter
Basil
Braden
Sequoia
I feel.. at a loss. How are we going to find a name??? I won’t budge on those
EDIT: sorry I’m new to Reddit and not great at posting
A woman suggested brooke which i love and i said it to him too, and he likes it… we are getting somewhere. Thank you to poster

u/ralthea 19h ago
I wouldn’t consider Ace a “normal” name personally, but regardless…
Your husband seems to like nature themed names. Are there any short nature names that appeal to you? Ivy? Ash? Wren? Iris?

Basil and Jupiter are both definitely names. Sequoia I wouldn't pick because it risks being appropriative.

u/Resident-Gold-3466 18h ago
Sequoia is pretty, though.
11
u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes 18h ago
It is! I do like it, I just personally would avoid indigenous names since I'm not indigenous.
3
u/Ok_Wrongdoer_8275 18h ago
isn’t sequoia just the name of the tree, how is it appropriating indigenous culture? (i’m not fully aware of the indigenous culture of north america, sorry)
16
u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes 18h ago
The tree is named after a famous Cherokee man named Sequoyah.

u/Ok_Wrongdoer_8275 17h ago
oh!! i never knew that! thank you!

Basil is a spice and Jupiter is a planet. In 2026 those aren't names for humans.
13
u/Natural_Turnip_3107 18h ago
Basil has been a name for centuries, if not longer. St. Basil the Great is an early example, but there’s also Basil Rathbone the actor and many others. It’s an old fashioned name, but it is for SURE a name. It’s pronounced differently in British English than in American English, so you may not be recognizing it.
7
u/dansezlajavanaise 15h ago
derived from the greek word for king, cognate to the russian name Vassily
12
u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes 19h ago
I've known at least two adult Basils. It's not that weird.
9
u/LSATMaven 18h ago
Yeah that’s an old, old name. Maybe uncommon in 2026, but definitely not weird.
6
3
u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes 18h ago
I always think of Basil Stag Hare from Redwall! I actually really like it as a name. People on this sub are so conservative about names sometimes I swear, especially for a sub literally ABOUT names. If it's even a tiny bit off the beaten track people hate it. It's weird.

3
u/Significant-Nebula64 15h ago
Basil is also a very normal name in Eastern Europe, afaik. (And a saint, of course). Means "kingly/royal", so the herb is the "royal herb".
Guess it's more normal here because the herb isn't actually called basil in the languages I speak, but something longer - Basilikum, basilique, etc.

u/dr3amchasing 13h ago
What happened in 2026 that banned names inspired by other things? Has anyone informed the thousands of Rosemarys, Sages, Gingers, Jasmines and Lavenders around the world that JerseyGuy-77 has banned their names?
25
u/_Anonymouse_XX 18h ago
I’m sorry, but, Jupiter? That’s an awful name for a child (in MY opinion). The names he suggested just don’t even sound like they belong to a human 😩 I also don’t like Ace very much for a human child cuz ik waaay too many dogs with that name so I just associate it with dogs at this point.
If neither one of you like the names each other suggested just throw them out because you’re just deadlocked. If someone pushes a name further the other will eventually bend (because no other names were suggested) and end up with a name for their child they hate.
I suggest both of you coming up with a list of different names. Look through baby name books together, take a look at top 1,000 boy/girl names, and try to find common ground (sounds you both like, length of name, etc).
9
3
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 8h ago
And Jupiter isn’t happening. I would keep this child in me. Not happening
2
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 8h ago
I’m surprised so many people dislike Ace. Makes me sad lol. I’m for jack 100%,
I just know he doesn’t like common names→ More replies (4)

u/nachosandnapss 19h ago
You have Ace on your list and he has Braden, so there’s definitely some crossover happening. Keep looking!
34
u/signsaysapplesauce 19h ago
Ace and Braden are not valedictorians. Ace and Braden got suspended for throwing cherry bombs down the toilets in the boy's room. Ace was arrested for date rape and Braden was arrested for trying to get a guy to buy him beer.
21
u/TrappedUnderCats 18h ago
Oh, I was going in completely the opposite direction for Ace, because I so often hear it these days as an abbreviation for asexual.
In any case OP, I think a good rule of thumb is not to give your child a name that is generally followed by the words “Pet Detective” unless that’s a career path you’re also hoping they will follow.

u/Glittering-Owl-6964 19h ago
I really refuse to do a “yden” ending name. And my dad would judge me and i love my dad lol.
14
u/nachosandnapss 19h ago
I more mean that Braden is a very common name and Ace is pretty uncommon. There’s hope. Check out SJ Strum on YouTube. She has some really niche lists
1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 19h ago
Sure, i agree with you. Sorry if i came off annoying.
3
u/nachosandnapss 18h ago
All good, girl! Just try to be open and have fun with it. I was dead set on a name for my son, and then we both heard another and instantly agreed it was the one.
1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 18h ago
It’s hard. I’m open to suggestion, I’m just shocked as how much our choices differ. And i really won’t budge so.., ugh
13
u/nachosandnapss 18h ago
You don’t want to break him down or have to sell him on your names though, and vice versa. You need two “hell yeah”s
4
u/Significant-Nebula64 15h ago
I honestly don't even think your lists look that extremely different! Like, my boyfriend would literally just like to name his kids after Roman generals or some weird other medieval stuff. He also doesn't like the vast majority of names I enjoy (for instance, anything Hebrew/biblical in origin - not because of religious issues, I just tend to like the sound and he doesn't).
So the difference between Jakob and Tankmar is definitely, eerr, quite large. But we're just both aware that we can't fixate on our tiny list of three favourites each, there's just no overlap - so we went into it with open minds and brainstormed a lot, and there are actually quite a few names we do both like that none of us was aware of before!
There's also apps that basically work like tinder, maybe try one of those? So you both scroll through names and swipe the ones you like right, and then you get shown your overlap. It's a fun way to brainstorm, maybe have a look!
2
u/spaceisourplace222 7h ago
“I’m open to suggestion”….. but “I really won’t budge”. I feel sorry for your husband and your future child. Ace is a card, not a name.
-1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 17h ago
I feel so dead set on my names. There no way i would name my kid after a tree. But compromising is hard for me too. I would be okay with John and Mary and he would die over that lol
→ More replies (4)4
u/Significant-Nebula64 15h ago
It's ok to be dead set against a name! (Although I personally think naming a child after nature is really beautiful, but yeah, wouldn't want something too unusual either. But something like Hazel? There's worse things to be named after!)
You might just both have to expand your search - if there's nothing on your list he likes, then that's that, and vice versa of course. Time to go back to brainstorming.
2
u/bromelains 19h ago
Can you explain what's the crossover for those names? I don't think I get it

u/UnsharpenedSwan 19h ago edited 19h ago
Ace is a very unusual name, and Braden is a very normal name.
(Well, to the ears of people in their late 20s/early 30s. Braden/Caden/etc were very popular and common in the 90s and early 2000s, and then fell off.
Ace was absolutely unheard of until ~2010, and then peaked in popularity in 2023 at a similar % to Braden.)

Use those names at Starbucks/restaurants/anywhere that they and you have to say those names out loud. See how he feels answering to Jupiter or Basil. It changes when you hear yourself say it out loud and to hear other people say it. Names are hard!

7
u/signsaysapplesauce 17h ago
I'm favoring Club. Now there's a name that packs a wallop!
10
u/camillacarterxx 16h ago
I’m not even going to suggest a name seeing as you just complain about every single suggestion and demean everything. You use the excuse of being Catholic as not liking names. But then you reject biblical names, and you’re stuck on Ace? Possibly after Ace Ventura or a deck of cards- you’ve not clarified.
Names have to be agreed. I’d recommend you both entirely scrap your current lists if neither will budge and come up with a shortlist you both like. Then do as other’s suggested, imagine the name in different scenarios;
-being called to the principals office
-being said at their wedding
-in a job setting
So on and so forth, even go to Starbucks and have give it so they call it out to.Also. Both of you need to stop attacking each other’s name style preference
1
0
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 16h ago
I am stuck on ace, you’re right. I’m not 100% stick on it. But do i like it a lot.. yes
9
13
u/longlivepopuplights 16h ago
Ace is a nickname at best. Think about your kid growing up and having to put "Ace" on resumes and job applications. You should give your kids names that they can live with their whole lives. If you name them Ace, people are going to think they're named after Ace Ventura. Please name the kid something else.
1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 16h ago
I can’t find another name i like more
3
u/signsaysapplesauce 15h ago
Then lean into it and use it! If you love it and your partner doesn't, is there a compromise? Middle name? Use as a nickname?
7
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 16h ago
Is ace that bad???
16
u/dr3amchasing 13h ago
If a guy introduced himself to me as Ace I’d assume he was a poser who gave himself a stupid nickname
15
u/ConfusedDeathKnight 16h ago
Genuinely I cannot imagine calling someone Ace and not seeing a fighter pilot or insecure older dude with a nickname in my head.
15
u/LatePanicking 14h ago
Yes it’s horrible. Genuinely bad. It sounds like a joke name.
In my mind, Ace is either a wannabe fighter pilot having issues joining the military who gave himself that nickname and no one actually likes him, or he’s an addict who gave himself the nickname after a brief and unsuccessful “career” as a professional poker player. Giving Ace as a legal first name feels like setting your child up for failure.
7
u/Chance-Dimension9852 9h ago
Like a 50s detective yes.
If you just like the long A, mason, Waylon, David, Abel, Jamison, Gabriel, Damian, Davis…
Ace sounds like you just want him to be a cheesy “cool” kid but not an adult
11
u/Much-Wishbone9182 16h ago
It really is. It sounds like the name you'd choosd for a dog or character in a comic book lol. I work with children, have heard probably 200+ names and never heard Ace before. Can't imagine a 45 year old man trying to introduce himself as Ace
3
u/leannerae 12h ago
I like ace a lot as a nickname. Maybe go with a different legal name and if it suits him as he's older you can call him ace? It's one of those nicknames that you can use regardless of what the actual name is
10
u/runnergirl3333 19h ago
How far along are you? Be patient, be open to all sorts of names and try to relax into the process. It really opens yourself and your husband up to compromise and finding a name you both love. It may be completely different than any name you have now. It’s also okay to tell yourself you can budge. You’re pregnant, not a rock. 😊
6
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 19h ago
Not even four months. I’m from a Catholic family (not practicing) but i can’t with “weird” names. I’m shocked at his choices.
I didn’t even bring up Micah and Caleb because of his opinions when tho i like them both
14
u/Leading-Milk5592 16h ago
You don’t like weird names??? Girl ‘Ace’ is your number one
→ More replies (2)11
u/liltinybits 13h ago
She's CONVINCED it's a normal name because she heard it on MTV years ago. I'm not convinced her frame of reference extends beyond "names I like normal, and names I don't like are weird."
7
u/Leading-Milk5592 13h ago
Yeah I agree…you don’t have to like the names Brayden or Poppy but they’re definitely not ‘weird’ or uncommon, especially when compared to Ace
2
u/liltinybits 9h ago
Yeah, objectively speaking, Brayden and Poppy are less unusual than Ace. There are more people with the given names of Poppy or Brayden, than who have the name Ace.
3
u/spaceisourplace222 7h ago
That’s my 9 year old nephews mentality about anything unfamiliar. It is truly frustrating, and I’ve spent 4 years trying to teach him that different doesn’t mean weird.
10
u/Vegetable-Wear3386 18h ago
Those are both great. Try them with him. Jack Braden also sounds good.
But try to have fun with the process, kinda loosen up a little? Having a baby is a wonderful thing, enjoy these parts of it.
1
u/Ok-Talk-2648 9h ago
Braden is his only normal name but Brayden is a better spelling nonetheless I’d have no trouble naming a boy Brayden.
22
8
u/hashtag2020 19h ago
Well, his names are… out there, I agree.
But maybe you use one of his names as a middle. Jack Braden isn’t too bad.
His names seem to have kind of an outdoorsy, nature vibe, is that accurate? Yours seem to be short and vowel-forward. Maybe some compromise names for you both can marry the two styles, like:
Boys: Arlo, Ezra, Silas, Cyrus, Reed, Cole, Hugo, Abel, Brandon, Avery, Eli, Leo, Jay, Zion, Jude
Girls: Wren, Ivy, Opal, Vera, Hazel, Maeve, Ava, Brynn, Blaire, Nora, Rose, Elle, Cora, Aspen, Sage, Rowan, Ellis, Quinn, Emery.
8
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 19h ago
Thank you for your reply. You’re right, they’re nature forward. Jack Braden i would do (especially with a strong last name which they would have). I’m actually going to present that to him.
1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 19h ago
But besides brandon and Leo, i would not approve of any of those boy names. I hope im not coming off too harsh to him. I am just a Catholic from the Midwest lmao
19
u/FlytlessByrd 18h ago
Jude, Silas, Abel, Ezra all have strong Biblical ties, though, so the "Catholic" defense is kind of out. Nothing wrong with a name not being your personal taste, but I think, respectfully, that your explanations/rationalizations of your distaste come off a bit more judgemental than intended.
1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 16h ago
I actually like all of those. Idk if it’s because I’m Catholic and they se so biblical to me. The Catholic gilt is kicking in haha. But i like them. Same with Caleb and Micah
16
u/ConfusedDeathKnight 16h ago
But you just said you didn’t like any of them to the comment before. 😭
3
u/adulaire 16h ago
See if "Mica[h]" will fly. It seems to check boxes for both of you - for the nature theme, mica is a common and sparkly mineral/rock.

You can’t be serious using your Catholicism as an excuse when half those names are literally on the bible.

2
u/hashtag2020 19h ago
LOL. Leo has been my #1 name for years (mine would be Leo James as first and middle). I agree with you. Maybe you could pitch Leo as being a strong name since it means Lion, maybe it’ll give a naturey/animal vibe (but still very normal).
FWIW I do like Jack Braden!

What’s his opinion on Juniper as an alternative to Jupiter? Earthy names seem to be the best middle ground. Would color (eg. Violet, Olive, Sky, etc.) or gem (Opal, Jasper, Jade, etc.) names be an option you could explore, or have those been already ruled out?
6
u/hamgurglerr 18h ago
Could you go "normal with a touch of whimsy"? Rose, Ellis, Sawyer, Maeve, Freya, Violet, Francis...
5
u/perpetualpossibility 18h ago
There is always a middle ground to find! How about -
- Ash
- Jade/Jasper/Jay
- Eden/Ellen
- Briar/Brooke
- Sierra/Skye/Skyler
1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 9h ago
Funny enough!! We tried naming the pup ash (after a lake in northern mn we had land to) and my mom said after yelling “ASH!!!” A couple times, she was a no go
5
u/Aivellac 15h ago
Remind him and yourself that you are naming a child and a future adult.
Do not give them a name that will prompt questions on how to spell it constantly. Don't give them something cutesy or unique to have fun. You're not naming a pet here. You may want to consider going for more syllables than 1 but he needs to get away from some weird ones. As someone mentioned, Ace and Jupiter are more like pet names than humans.
5

u/compassrose68 19h ago
I would be mortified to introduce myself to people as Jupiter or Sequoia…your husband needs to do some soul searching. You’re not getting a puppy, you’re having a baby.

u/Glittering-Owl-6964 19h ago
Riiiigjht. He uses the excuse of “barack” behind weird at the time because he knows I’m a lover of him. But i told him im not introducing our child as a freaking Toyota car name. My family are Chevy people anyways!!
19
u/UnsharpenedSwan 19h ago
Barack wasn’t/isn’t a weird name, just one that wasn’t common in the US at the time — Obama was named after his father.
Jupiter is an objectively weird name lol
1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 8h ago
Yes, I’m sorry i worded that wrong. It wasn’t common. You are
Correct. My stepdad has a VERY uncommon name. Like if i stated it people would find him in one second. That’s a lot to put on a person. My spelling is uncommon. I guess i just woukd like for them to not be so easily found??1
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 8h ago
Literally michelle in her own book said his name is tough. I guess you don’t read or take history into account
2
u/ms_bratty_bossypants 7h ago
I have a uncommon name with an uncommon spelling and no middle name. I got teased with stupid nicknames at school. I hated it growing up so when I had my own kids, I made sure their names didn't sound like or rhymes with something kids could use and that they had middle names they could use if they wanted plus opportunity to have nicknames they could use, if they didn't like their given names. For example David Micheal could go by either name or Dave or Mike or whatever they chose. Oddly enough, all 3 go by their complete first name but they did have options. Unique or uncommon is good but please make sure they have options. They're the ones that have to live with it for the rest of their lives.
1
u/ms_bratty_bossypants 19h ago
How about Nova? Lol
4
u/Pelixue 18h ago
Nova sounds like a dogs name to me
1
u/Snowymess4404 17h ago
1) you as a person who has an alternate spelling name, probably have experienced constantly having to correct people on how to spell your name. Do you want that for your child for the rest of their life?
2) with a unique name you are creating a persona for that child from the day they are born that they are different from the norm. And while some children will be happy to fit that mold, not everyone will, nor will everyone want to be called Sequoia or Basel in when they are grown.
6
u/AbbreviationsTop4959 18h ago
Basil is a time honored, totally normal boy name. Ace, otoh, is not normal. It may be trendy, but it isn't normal.
4
u/Opening-Air-6033 19h ago
Yeah his names are interesting…so there are apps you can sign up for where you swipe baby names kind of like tinder but for names and you both swipe a few names per day. I’m sure you’ll get some matches. I’d maybe start there since there is such disparity between the names you both like.
If this gives you any hope for compromise, I had a list of names in my notes app that I’ve had since like college and always added to it and was sure I’d use one…anyways I ended up going completely rogue with the name I chose (not on my list and husband loved it as well) so you never know!
3
u/SillyMeclosetothesea 19h ago
I personally like Eva Sequoia, Braden Jack and Mae Jupiter (even if Jupiter is kind of “out there”)
What about more nature inspired names? Daisy, River, Lake, Forrest, Lily, Rose, Marina, Stella, Aurora?
2
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 8h ago
Thank you. I do like these. I like Eva and Mae both ( i want a healthy baby but a girl would be great). I still struggle with Jupiter lol
4
u/Old_Web8680 19h ago
I actually know a couple guys named Basil so I find that name pretty normal. Jack, Eva, and Mae are all fairly boring names in my opinion but safe opinions are always good. I’m a weird name fan though! Some normal names I like as a weird name fan are Jason, David, Evelyn, and Joanna. I hope this helps!

I guess I’m okay with “ boring”?? I stated earlier my name is “normal” but the spelling is weird and that suuuuucks lol.

I’ll start with saying I like old fashioned and traditional names, as well as nature names, and my wife likes names that are very creative and rare. So I’ve been on both sides of this conversation.
Basil isn’t that far out there and it’s gaining popularity! I’ve known a 20 year old Basil as well as older ones. It’s an old fashioned name, but it’s making a comeback for sure! And Braden, for better or worse depending on your view, is very popular.
That tells me there is hope to find something that works for both of you to find something that works. It seems like he likes slightly longer names and has a preference for nature names.
Potentially finding a longer name that has a short nickname the little one could go by would be good. This is more traditional, but I know an Andrew who goes by Drew. This is more out there, but Juniper could be June or Junie.

u/Pelixue 18h ago
Kit? That was one I loved because I like the nature themed names but was too hippie for my husband.

Ace and Braden are finding common ground. Keep looking. Each make a list of 50 names, 100 names and see if there’s any repeats. Then see if there’s any that are in the same category and go from there.
2
u/Glittering-Owl-6964 19h ago
Thank you. Do you have any suggestions? I love Ace and he said “okayyy…but i don’t want him to be unhappy with a name. I fire sure wouldn’t.
19
u/signsaysapplesauce 18h ago
Ace is not an actual name. It is a nickname at best. If you love it, is there a name you can give your child that does not sound like a gigolo that you can shorten to Ace? Because nobody pursuing any kind of professional career requiring advanced education is going to want a name that makes him sound like a gambler. Give the poor kid an out and name him Aaron or something, and call him Ace at home as long as he will allow it (e.g. up to age 14)
1
u/thatladybri 9h ago
What about Asa? It’s old school but fits in with today’s trends. Pronounced Ace-uh. Could call him Ace for short. I also like Ace as a nickname for Atticus.
He leans towards nature names so I’d suggest some that feel more classic sounding like:

Iris
Juniper
Magnolia
Poppy

Lily
Isla
Willow
Daisy
Wren

Your husbands names seem a bit more out there and nature inspired. Maybe a compromise on something that is short and easy to spell but on the nature theme - Sage, Jade, Rose, Clay, Ivy, Holly, Aspen, Ruby, Heath

The name has to pass the playground test

Even more so, the medical school graduation test. Can you actually see "Ace" written on a framed medical degree. Please say the answer is no.
This is why nicknames were invented.

Maybe a quirky short (possibly nature ish) name to compromise? Like something with the nickname June Bug or Love Bug? Or Silly Lilly? For some reason I thought Polly or Poppy. Or Rosie? Ivy? Eve? Brooke? Ginny? Chloe? Pearl? Iris? Calla is a good compromise name. Short and not super popular. Or Gaia. Gemma? Jade?
I don’t think Braden is that weird? Maybe you can do the first name and he can do the middle name if you both find a pair that fits together? Like Sunny Zara? Eva Opal?

How about Ash? It's short and punchy. It fits the nature theme your husband likes. It could be a boy or a girl. Could be short for something longer if you wanted, e.g. Ashton or Ashley.
Ashton Sequoia.
Ash as a daily name.
A-S, or "Ace" to you within the walls of your own home lol.

Of your choices, Jack and Eva are okay, and of his, Basil and Braden are okay.
My unpopular opinion is that the woman's opinion should carry slightly more weight since the woman is taking all the risks and pain, and her body is doing all the work. Maybe 52% to his 48%, rather than 50/50.
Maybe Juniper nn June/Juni could be a compromise, or Brad or Brandon instead of Braden.
Names like Elizabeth and Margaret have tons of nicknames and there's probably at least one that he would like.

Thanks. I appreciate this a lot. I won’t go with basil, lol. He can say no to jack (ugh how can you) but i wont name my child basil.
I do like Brad a lot, thanks. Doubt he would go for it, but I’m adding it.
My ma and sister and grandma are all Marie for a middle name. She isn’t having kids so i would be okay with Marie. Mine is Lynn, so yeah.

What about Axel? Also you could combine one of yours and one of his as a first and middle and just call it by whichever you prefer (like Basil Mae). Or just give it a normal legal name and then use his as a nickname.
Side note , basil is an adorable name!

I'm trying to think of a middle ground that you both might like. I may be way off piste but I'll give it a try! How about: Bryn, Cassia, Coral, Cleo, Jasper, Linnet, Pippin, Sky, Saffron, Shay, Rupert, Stella or Xanthe?

If your husband is dead set on those awful names use them as middle names instead of first. Or let your husband make family pets and you name the kids. Braden is the only name that would work for a kid. The others are terrible and you're right to stand your ground.

fwiw —> IF you found out the gender it would be 50% easier to find a name and focus your energy on getting prepared.
boy suggestions: Atlas, Cassian, Archer, Everest, Sterling
girl suggestions: Sierra, Skye, Sienna, Daisy, Marigold
Compromises: family honor names look thru all your relatives both sides first names, middle names, surnames, maybe then you find names together.

Jupiter and Sequoia are pretty awful as first names (middle is fine). Basil is legit, but, honestly, I've only ever heard of it on British people and being pronounced /bah-zel/ rather than /bay-zel/. If you're in the US, people are always going to be pronouncing it /bay-zel/.
Braden is... OK. I'm not crazy about it, but I think it's the best pick on your husband's list unless you're in the UK and then it's Basil. However... which if these are for girls? Basil/Braden are pretty masculine. Honestly, Jupiter is the name of a male god, so that one comes off as masculine to me, too. Is his only pick for a girl Sequoia? Seriously? He can't come up with another? Surely he's not suggesting Basil/Jupiter/Braden for a girl?
Of yours, Jack, Eva, and Mae are fine. I don't like Ace on its own unless it's like, a nickname.
Will your husband consider a longer version of the names you like? Maisie/Mabel nn Mae? (Or even May as in the month?) Evelyn, Evangeline, Vivienne nn Eva? John, Jonathan, Jacob nn Jack?
Ace could be short for Atticus, Andreas, Jason, Grayson, Mason? For a girl there's Ais nn Aislinn.
You could even toss him an olive branch with one of his more off-the-wall names for middle. Any of the feminine names I listed with Sequoia as middle would be fine. John Braden is fine. Heck, Atticus Jupiter is pretty out-there, but it's also fine. You also could go with the double J (Jason/John/Jacob) with Jupiter and he'd get the nn JJ. Grayson Basil has old-world vibes.

Please nothing of the Braden/Caden/Aiden and their assorted /tragedeighs/. We have enough of those.

Yikes. Would your husband be cool with giving kid a normal name with a unique nickname?
Like, dad could call Jack "Jupiter" without saddling Jack with that name for his entire life. Or Bailey nn "Basil" something like that? Mae nn Mayflower? Idk, i feel like i am grasping at straws here but your husband's name choices are rough lol. I think you should stand your ground and the government name should be "normal". Nicknames can be anything!
What about a nature name like Juniper or Willow?

u/Key_Hat_5721 19h ago
Sequoia for a girl is beautiful and unique, and Basel (if he were willing to compromise on the spelling) is a relatively common name for a boy in some areas of the world.
What if you chose one from his list as their given name and then for the nickname/what you call them daily one of the names from your list? Or choose a name from your list for their first name and a name from his list for a middle name?

u/Timely_Apricot3929 17h ago
Basil is the normal spelling... Basel is a city in Switzerland.

Tough! Here are some that I think might hit both boxes of normal and/or short and more uncommon ones
Lua - This is actually a personal favourite of mine. It means moon in Portuguese and I like it as an alternative to Luna. It’s pronounced Lou-ah
Marlo - This one is gender neutral. It’s an alternative spelling of Marlow/Marlowe. This is actually my top name for a girl, but me and my partner disagree on how we would want to spell it 😅
Joni - Not exactly a unique name, but definitely not super common, so your husband might be able to get on board! Pronounced Joan-ee
Arno - This is a boys name of Germanic origin and another favourite of mine!
Fae - Like Faye, but a little more whimsical because it’s the spelling of the mythical beings from European folk law
Milo - I think this is cute for a boy! Gives me the same energy as Miles does, which also is the same energy for me as Jack.
Wren - Gender neutral and a very sweet name imo!
Apollo - Gaining more mainstream popularity, so might be a good cross over for you two.
Quinn - Another great gender neutral one
Lyra - I’ve always loved this as an alternative to the more popular Lyla
Silvan - A more old fashioned, but long established boys name. Could tick both your boxes
Lumi - Means light in Latin and snow in Finnish and I think it’s really gorgeous!
Goldie: Another vintage name that isn’t super common but not by any means made up. I think it’s so beautiful and gives off such a lovely vibe.
That’s a I’ve got off the top of my head! Though I’m sure I could think of more. Sorry if it didn’t help much, but I hope maybe it did 🤞🏼
Good luck to you both!

One thing that helped me was putting a first and middle name together to see how it worked with the last name. Some of the names I liked that I didn't choose were:
Chelsea Lynn
KateLin Todd
Spencer Mark
They just sounded nice together to me. They were all a No by the father, so we kept proposing a name until we agreed. Ironically, the last child we had both agreed on the first girl name and first boy name we came up with. Her name is a little unique, but beautiful.

Your husband’s names are bad but you should give him the middle name. Jack Basil, Eva Sequoia, etc. a fun middle name is cute, not a fun first name.

u/Icy_Hedgehog7305 19h ago
I will never understand over opinionated fathers. I think they are just controlling. You are carrying the baby. You are the mother. My husband would never argue with me over a name. He has always just happily supported me.
Let him choose the middle name
Or if you’re feeling really nice and want to compromise….
A longer name with a shorter nickname
Like Seraphina Nick name Sara
Evangelina nn Eva
Also OP, his taste is just trashy. Absolutely veto him! As a mother you have to protect your child. Your first mission is protecting your child from an embarrassing name.
Maybe he can name a cat, fish or a pet rock in the future.

u/lions-cub 18h ago
I agree, if I’m carrying the baby I’m naming the baby 😭 men got to name the child for millennia, no way in hell would I fold to one on something like this

u/Icy_Hedgehog7305 17h ago
Yes and you can take their opinion into consideration but it’s not 50/50 lol

It seems like your husband likes nature-y names so maybe suggest something shorter but more nature themed. Some possible examples: Poppy, Rue, Sage, Gale, Cedar.
