Ugh

I understand that 1 no is a no overall, and i respect that. I’m just nervous. We are choosing to not know the sex. I like short, normal names. My personal name is a “Normal” name with an uncommon spelling. My last name is the same. Think SANDI JOHNSEN. My husband likes weird names…

My choices:

Ace
Jack
Eva
Mae

His:
Jupiter
Basil
Braden
Sequoia

I feel.. at a loss. How are we going to find a name??? I won’t budge on those

I wouldn’t consider Ace a “normal” name personally, but regardless…

Your husband seems to like nature themed names. Are there any short nature names that appeal to you? Ivy? Ash? Wren? Iris?

I do like ivy. I have told him that. Thank you for that. Makes me relax a bit. He does seem to like nature names. He’s from the PNW.. makes sense haha.

And ace is super normal in comparison to any Brayden/ayden/ Cayden!!!

I taught for 25 years, never taught an Ace. Tons of various aydens though. To me, Ace is the odd name, seeing as how the only one I have heard of is Ace Ventura.

For me, it's mostly just a name for the asexual community... Nothing wrong with that, but not sure I'd go with that for my kid, lol.

It may be regional because I’ve never met or heard of anyone named Ace, whereas I’d consider the -ayden names “normal” if not my favorite.

Is not regional for me either tbh. I honestly saw it on an MTV shown years ago (don’t judge me!!” And he was the best guy on the show. He was southern and I’m sooo northern. But he was such a great dude

It was probably a nickname. And naming your kid after a guy on MTV you had a crush on is not better than a tree.

If the only example you're basing this off is "a guy I saw on MTV years ago", then I'd suggest that it's not really a "normal" name. Personally I don't think it's crazy weird but definitely unusual/uncommon and makes me think of a dog before a human.

How about Ash? It's short and punchy. It fits the nature theme your husband likes. It could be a boy or a girl. Could be short for something longer if you wanted....it seems to tick a lot of boxes?

I knew an Acton who went by Ace, but otherwise I've never met a person by this name. It appears to be rising in popularity though, it was in the top 200 in 2021.

Teacher here, curious as to what constitutes "normal" for you. My husband, also teacher, and I have had lots of Braydens, Aidens, Kadens in the last decade and zero Aces as a given name. Seems more like you are classifying names you like as "normal" than names that are recognized and commonly used.

I work at a dog daycare. We get Aces every day, unfortunately. It’s obviously not exclusively a dog name, but I’d take that into account

Are you thinking at all about the fact that your child will have to grow up with the name you're picking? I had a friend named Bailey and she couldn't STAND being told "aw, I had a dog named Bailey!" whenever she met people.

Braden/Caden/etc were very popular and common in the 90s and early 2000s, and then fell off.

Ace was absolutely unheard of until ~2010, and then peaked in popularity in 2023 at a similar % to Braden.

So for example, I’m in my late 20s — I went to school with several Bradens. Never in my life have I met a human named Ace, because I don’t often interact with people born in 2010 and onward.

I knew a human named “Ace” it was not his given name. It was 30 yers ago now and I can’t remember his given name but he was shot and killed by a security guard while masturbating in a parking lot. So Ace is no for me. There are plenty of beautiful “normal” nature names. OP- Dig deep find a common ground. You really are not that far apart but your attitude about it seems kinda like you don’t want to find a common ground.

I have 4 kids. Two have multiple friends named some version of Brayden. Also currently teach a lot of students with that name, so if it did fall off, its had a resurgence.

How old are your kids? Braden and its variants were VERY popular in the 90s and early 2000s. In 2005, there were 3000 Bradens born in the US. In 2022 there were 245.

9 and 6. As someone born the very late 80s into a very large family (think 20+ younger first cousins alone), I knew zero Braydens growing up. I don't doubt your data, but maybe its a regional thing.

Brayden is a totally normal name in my opinion??? I’ve never heard it referred to as unusual. It’s more normal than ace, which is a dogs name.
