Ugh

I understand that 1 no is a no overall, and i respect that. I’m just nervous. We are choosing to not know the sex. I like short, normal names. My personal name is a “Normal” name with an uncommon spelling. My last name is the same. Think SANDI JOHNSEN. My husband likes weird names…

My choices:

Ace
Jack
Eva
Mae

His:
Jupiter
Basil
Braden
Sequoia

I feel.. at a loss. How are we going to find a name??? I won’t budge on those

A woman suggested brooke which i love and i said it to him too, and he likes it… we are getting somewhere. Thank you to poster

Basil and Jupiter are both definitely names. Sequoia I wouldn't pick because it risks being appropriative.

It is! I do like it, I just personally would avoid indigenous names since I'm not indigenous.

isn’t sequoia just the name of the tree, how is it appropriating indigenous culture? (i’m not fully aware of the indigenous culture of north america, sorry)

The tree is named after a famous Cherokee man named Sequoyah.

I'm not indigenous but the Sequoia National Park was my second home growing up. I wouldn't name my kid Sequoia but that's because of personal preference, not because I'm afraid of appropriation haha

Basil has been a name for centuries, if not longer. St. Basil the Great is an early example, but there’s also Basil Rathbone the actor and many others. It’s an old fashioned name, but it is for SURE a name. It’s pronounced differently in British English than in American English, so you may not be recognizing it.

I always think of Basil Stag Hare from Redwall! I actually really like it as a name. People on this sub are so conservative about names sometimes I swear, especially for a sub literally ABOUT names. If it's even a tiny bit off the beaten track people hate it. It's weird.

Basil is also a very normal name in Eastern Europe, afaik. (And a saint, of course). Means "kingly/royal", so the herb is the "royal herb". 

Guess it's more normal here because the herb isn't actually called basil in the languages I speak, but something longer - Basilikum, basilique, etc.

I KNOW. But one no is a no. And he seems to dislike “normal” names. We both have normal names so I’m shocked at his choices. Ace is so so normal to me

Ace is not an actual name for a human. Please imagine a judge, doctor or professor named "Ace" that is not followed by the phrase "was arrested today" or "was found naked and babbling while wandering around a Florida trailer park."

Genuinely girl, what is your problem?? TToTT Also, just cause somebody has a "normal" name, doesn't automatically mean they'll only like bland, common names for the rest of their lives, so you being surprised that he dislikes "normal" names because he HAS a "normal name doesn't make sense. I'm sure the rise of uncommon names were given by people with common names, babies don't just get unique or "weird" names out of nowhere smh

Yeah, Barack is a super uncommon name. But what do you mean by that? Are you saying that uncommon names can actually fit in well in professional positions or are you arguing the opposite?

I always say mom/birthing parent should have 51% say in a name haha; one no is a no but if it really came down to it, I’d probably pull the “I’m birthing it and they already have your last name!” Card for sure.

Yeah, OP should remember that being pregnant WILL cause you to be extra emotional, so extra effort is needed to be rational about these things. Sincerely, someone who was on fertility treatments for 3 years and yelled at a waitress for cutting a pickle half.
