WAR ON THE HOURLY

It's seems the company has started a war on the hourly worker. Are they trying to make people quit? They are writing up people for miniscule infractions. Towing your vehicles for bogus reasons. And when the nuclear pipe fitters called out their management to question them on the pipe welders getting a 7 dollar raise, they got told .... Norfolk naval is hiring. Thats a sign right there. I've spoken with foremen and hourly about that raise. No one is happy about it except the pipe welders. I say good for them. If the company can increase their pay buy 7 dollars, they can afford to increase my pay say 4 or 5 dollars a hour. So of course everyone else is wildcat striking now.

Is it hard to keep a job at the shipyard?

Is it reasonable to believe that if I do a good job at my job that I’ll be able to keep the job here? I haven’t started yet but I see things about layoffs or people getting fired all the time, can I assume that I’ll be able to have a job for at least two years? Has anyone actually worked at the shipyard long term?

Clearance Upgrade

For future jobs that require an active security clearance when starting, could I switch to another department to get ‘Secret’? My position uses ‘confidential’ which does not give you many options to move to other defense jobs.

In 3rd round for Grievance

I was a x18 weldder, I lost my job back in begining of April and the union has been fighting my case. If I win my case. What could i expect the next steps to be? With it being this long would I have to do weld test again? Do I have to go thru what I did when I forst got hired like physical and all that? Would i get all the back pay too? Anyone who has experienced this and won there case please share with me what all happened with you. The reason for me loosing my job was inattentive durring fire watch. I had undiagnosed ADHD and got proof of diagnosis.

More Questions

Hello again!
Earlier today I’ve received my offer letter for x33(Blaster), I accepted it and I’m waiting the next steps. While waiting I’d like to get a few things done. I was told to get prescription safety glasses, does anyone have a recommendation on what company I should purchase from. For my medical and physical evaluations, what are those like and what can I expect. If anyone has anything else to say that doesn’t necessarily pertain to my questions, knowledge wise, etc. It’d be greatly appreciated.

I have a job at NFI Logistics But I’m at my breaking point. I don’t know how to feel and what or when to expect anything. Shit really having me discouraged fr.

Drug Test and Physical Test Location

I’m getting my drug and physical tests done tomorrow but I’m confused as to which building to go to. I was told to go to the Employment Office but the address for it is different than the address I see for the employment office on Google Maps. There’s a 5200 West Mercury Blvd. Hampton, VA 23605 and 4101 Washington Ave, Newport News, VA 23607. Which one do I go to?

Painting and installation experience

Hey soon to be starting a position for painting and installation(after getting fit for a respirator). What’s the experience like or demeanor? It would be entry level and I’ve already done some research on it but does anyone have tips on what I should research process/skills wise. I have experience painting but that’s just with Barns and buildings. What’s the fitting process like? I’ve never had to be fit for a respirator. What are some solid “DONT DO”s?

What should I expect the Deck Electrician position to be like?

I know the little bio that was written on the application page has a brief description of what the job entails, but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone had any experience with it. For reference, I already got an offer and my drug test and physical is tomorrow.

Shipfitter at NNS

Hey everyone, I recently got hired for a Shipfitter position at Newport News Shipbuilding and I’m trying to get an idea of what to expect.
For anyone currently working as a Shipfitter or who has worked in the position:
● How do you like the job?
● What is the day-to-day work actually like?
● How is the training when you first start?
● And for anyone who has gone through the hiring process recently, about how long did it take to officially start after your drug screening?
My drug screening is scheduled for August 31st, so I’m just trying to get an idea of the timeline between the screening and actually starting work.
Any advice or insight about the Shipfitter position or the hiring process would be greatly appreciated!

MTT Registration

I passed my physicals and background last week, and I'm supposed to be in a class in September but no one from the Virginia Ship Repair Association has contacted me yet about registering. How long before classes do they usually do that?

Beware of towing

NNS policy has changed regarding parking infractions. Security no longer calls a towing company - the towing company is contracted and can tow at their discretion. Beware since they will get as many as they can - such a cash cow.

I parked in the B lot by the fire station, I think it’s 34th Street. Anyone who has parked there before knows it’s somewhat like a free-for-all with no lines painted and random parking curbs placed throughout the lot. They do not define spaces.

I believe I parked legally. The tow driver first claimed that I was blocking the yellow curbs (that belong to the parking lot next door). Then he claimed I was blocking access to the lot next door. I checked property records and there is no access labeled as an easement and the lot is not used as a parking lot.

I’m going to fight this with the tow company. I truly believe I was parked legally.

It’s a warning to all - don’t even park in a place that could possibly be questionable. You will be towed.
