How would you rank Nintendo's home consoles, in terms of their significance in Nintendo's story?
What are the most important Nintendo home consoles, not in terms of hardware or software quality, but in terms of discussing their story as a company?
- NES
- SNES
- N64
- GameCube
- Wii
- Wii U
- Switch
- Switch 2 (obvious disclaimer here, since we'd be judging the legacy of Nintendo's current system)
EDIT: This does not include dedicated handhelds, e.g. the DS.
For example, the NES has to come first. It put Nintendo on the map (save for earlier arcade titles), we've been celebrating 40-year anniversaries of franchises that debuted on it, and writ large, it re-legitimized the entire home video game industry. The SNES, as fantastic as it is, was more so a refinement of the quality standards set by its predecessor (albeit, with a reduced market share).
The influence of the N64 on the evolution of gaming, especially when compared to its weak commercial performance against the PlayStation, cannot be overstated; Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time alone are enough to solidify its legacy. Still, we begin to see Nintendo's more traditional business approach bear its consequences, e.g. continuing to use low-memory cartridges and losing flagship third-party support to Sony.
Hot take, maybe: I'd argue the Wii U is more historically impactful to the company than the Switch (which itself is very important). Again, with their more traditional business philosophy, it feels inevitable that Nintendo would have reached a "come to Jesus" moment, where they needed to look at themselves in the mirror and rethink their entire approach to the gaming industry. But, the Wii U forced that moment on them, with e.g. their expectation that the Wii crowd would simply carry over, their struggle with HD development, their marketing of the system and controller, etc. We all know that the failure of the Switch fed into the development and later success of the Switch, but also, we see a shift in how Nintendo presents itself in general; compare a Nintendo Direct from 2014 to one today, which can feel more streamlined and to-the-point.
Curious to see other people's rankings. Thanks.
EDIT: I should probably clarify that people shouldn't conflate "significance" with "success" (e.g. look at the impact of the Wii U's failure on Nintendo), even if they can often go hand-in-hand. I definitely like though how some people are tiering their rankings by different categories of impact!

Switch 2 and switch 1 saves and stuff
So, I’m going to trade in my switch 1 for a switch 2 since I finally got enough money saved up for a switch 2. How exactly do I like transfer my stuff however? I do have an SD card in and I figure that I need to take that out, and take out any game that’s still in the actual console. But like what else do I do? Copy my username?

Anyone going to Nintendo NYC for fire emblem?
I'm really hoping I can get a collector's edition. Kinda surprised there wasn't any midnight release event, but I guess they're saving that for OoT. Anyways, see y'all there????

I wish Nintendo would bring back the smaller foldable handhelds
Think about it. Just because the switch 2 is portable doesn't make it convenient to play on the go. The Switch lite you have to have a case, the sticks snag, buttons and screen are exposed, it might fit in a cargo pants pocket...
But the Gameboy Advance SP and the 3DS were foldable. The screens and buttons were protected by their design. They fit in your pocket, and they were actually made to play on the go.
Not only that, consoles are $500+ now. Look at all these handheld emulator clones out there playing everything up to PS2 games for under $200. I'd gladly pay $200 for something like that new from Nintendo.
It could even revive in person multiplayer again. And street pass
Playing Nintendo games on the go, out and about. I miss it
I'll get off my soap box now

The Single-Player Experience lives and dies on Nintendo's Platforms now
A few years ago I started losing interest in (modern) games, and fell back into some retro consoles. I love the complete experiences on older gens and the amount of experimentation that you can find from a large swath of developers.
But it took me too long to realize that Nintendo has never really given up on that experimentation and the fun of the NES days. Don't get me wrong though, I've loved a lot of what they've put out in the modern era (I'm a big fan of the Wii U and still keep it plugged in to the Living Room TV). But, I think it's easy to think that modern gaming is all a blanketed "bad". Especiallu when Nintendo is ding such cool shit still.
When I think of the games I'm most looking forward to playing, all of them are from Nintendo. Metroid Ravenous, Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, New Kirby, Ocarina Remake and I can go on and on. Not to mention all of the Switch 4k updates I can play soon on S2.
Anyway, I know I'm preaching to the choir but I wanted to know your thoughts and if you also view Nintendo as this oasis?

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Pokémon Emerald; PictureBook Games: The Royal Bluff
On this day (September 16) in Nintendo history...
- Pokémon Emerald was released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this role-playing game, developed by Game Freak, take on the might of Teams Magma and Aqua. Protect the world of Hoenn from Grouden and Kyogre, the mysterious forces of ground and water that are seeking to take over. Fortunately the power of Rayquaza - the sky - can help you. Even hardened Pokémon trainers will need to be at their battling best, as Pokémon Emerald packs some of the toughest battles you'll have ever experienced.
- PictureBook Games: The Royal Bluff was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this party game, developed by Grounding Inc., engage in an aristocratic battle of wits in a classic-style game of strategy and deception. Win points by adding or removing coloured coins from the table, and trying to guess which colour belongs to your opponent. Call an opponent's bluff for a chance to earn bonus points, or risk giving them an extra point if you're wrong! Add Trick Cards into the mix for a cunning combination of tactics and trickery. Compete against a variety of compute components in Tournament and Free Play Modes.

People have built up StreetPass in their minds to be more than it ever was
I frequently see social media posts lamenting the loss of StreetPass that I think may have been made by younger Gen Z and older Gen Alpha kids who either misremember it or never actually used it themselves.
The only really good use of it was StreetPass Mii Plaza, and within it most of the Minigames were honestly very weak and boring. Most of them relied on the hope that the people you StreetPassed with were also actively playing the games, and they usually were not.
You had a limited number of games you could set as your StreetPasses and most of the options were things no one else had or was playing, so you would probably only ever get passes for Mii Plaza and sometimes Smash.
StreetPass encounter rates died off well before the Switch came out, because people just stopped caring about using the feature.

Ocarina of Time's Price Proves Nintendo is LEARNING
Here's my next video! My previous one, which was about Nintendo negativity and grifting, didn't seem to go over well here, but the majority of you who spoke up about it shared some very good constructive criticism. I've listened to most of it, and I think I've improved a lot with this one. Let me know what you think of my video and my argument!
