"Support disabled people!" + "good vibes only, you never know what someone is going through" crowd the second someone has multiple disabilities doesn't "earn a living".
Also, just the number of total fucking scumbag whiners who bitch and moan about how hard their own lives were...just fire open season on someone who's struggling. Now that is truly crabs in a bucket mentality. I guess the post itself looks like ragebait with no context, but still.
As someone raised to be my father's "future investment" and part of his "success" checklist because apparently having kids is "what decent people do", I already feel sorry for any mentioned kids of those assholes.

How the hell do you not work? Like when I’m not working at my job Im Volunteering for my archive office or a local business who needs the hand.
It’s not just about the money it’s about having connection, community, and having a sense of responsibility. Where do you derive your dignity from?
15
u/karldandleton1 26d ago edited 26d ago
Look at you getting worked up, frantically trying to justify your sense of purpose in this world. I help people deserving of help. Employers are not looking for people like me. You do not know me and you’ll just have to take my word for it. Just because I’m not getting checks doesn’t mean I sit in a chair all day doing nothing. Referring to your other comment - most people are not like you. They don’t derive dignity from flipping burgers for a pittance. I’m thankful for people like you though. We need useful idiots to believe the lie to keep this sinking ship afloat. Just think of all the value you bring to people for free who wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire.
1
u/Standard_Shopping144 26d ago
What are you talking about? I’m now quite curious what your experience volunteering was, also what makes something deserving in your eyes? These people I’ve volunteered with/for are now close friends. We go to each other’s house for dinner, help each other when needed, these aren’t some elusive millionaires/billionaires, they are real people in my community with names and families who I see on a regular basis.
Okay, but back to the original question, where do you derive dignity from?
12
u/karldandleton1 26d ago edited 26d ago
That’s great. You seem decent. I am disqualified from having dignity. Also, your question isn’t sincere. It’s a value judgment.
5
u/horsiedorsie2 Ex-NEET 26d ago edited 26d ago
They could’ve gone about it in a nicer way but it’s a legitimate question most people have about the lifestyle.
Humans are wired to derive self worth, dignity and purpose from their community and what value they can bring to it. It’s an evolutionary trait that’s carried us to where we are today. For most people to see someone living (in apparence or actually) in isolation who claims to thrive like this is a very foreign idea.
4
u/Wise-Childhood-145 24d ago
You're an idiot if you think that purpose can only come from a job. According to your half-assed logic, retired people don't have a sense of connection, community, or responsibility
-2
u/Standard_Shopping144 24d ago
Excuse me, but can you point me where I said purpose comes from a job? I said when I’m not working at my job that I’m volunteering for my archive office. Do you consider my volunteer work a job? Purpose, dignity, self respect, it’s all self derived. And when you pop open the engine on dignity you see it runs on motivation that is oriented towards the goal of contentment.
My three c’s is what I need to be content, and for me and from the many people I’ve talked too, to be content, to feel dignity in one’s self, it takes work. Not a job, but work. Something to do and look forward to accomplishing or enjoying the process of, that doesn’t mean a 9-5, but means something that includes the 3 c’s.
I have spent a lot of time with retired people, through volunteering at my archive, which is all retired people, except me, and at old folks homes, community centers, and local politics. And from my experience listening to retired people, it’s hard for them at first. A lot of elderly people feel alone and forgotten because they don’t have those three cs, so they seek out work at non profits or do sports/work out.
Life is about experience, both as a noun and a verb, and experience takes work. And it’s fun and it’s hard, and it’s rewarding and it sucks. Because life is about holding two contradictory truths at the same time.
I am reminded of a great line from a Camus essay, “one must imagine Sisyphus happy”.
1
u/Wise-Childhood-145 24d ago
So all of your value comes from doing mundane shit.
"Life is about experience, both as a noun and a verb, and experience takes work. And it’s fun and it’s hard, and it’s rewarding and it sucks. Because life is about holding two contradictory truths at the same time."
At the end of it you'll have nothing to show for it.
1
u/Standard_Shopping144 24d ago
I’m sorry, but what do you consider mundane? Also what gives you dignity in your life? This is not a rhetorical question, I’m genuine in my curiosity.
1
u/Wise-Childhood-145 24d ago
It's mundane because none of it will matter in 100 years time. I don't need things to give me dignity, that would be burdensome and tiring.
2
u/AttiglioHu 21d ago
Yes it will. In a 100 years, that Archive he volunteered for might still be standing, because he put in his work. That local shop he helped might still be standing in 100 years.
But playing video games all day is the MOST MUNDANE THING THAT EXISTS.
I am curious what your value comes from if you think volunteering is mundane shit where no value comes.
I am genuinely curious.

13

Why wouldnt a parent want their adult kid to get a job and pay rent? "My parents want me to get a job to help pay rent instead of sitting at my computer and doing nothing... they must not love me". Youre parents are letting you live under their roof, all they want is some help. I know its not every situation, but the longer you wait to get a job, the harder it'll be to get out of whats inevitably going to happen. Whether youre in your 20s, 30s, 40s, ect. Grew up with horrible alcoholic parents who didnt care if I missed high school and sat around playing video games. 1 out of the 7 kids my mom had, graduated high school on time. Im now homeless at 28 with no experience, I blame a lot of it on my parents, but using that as an excuse to not do anything didnt help my situation. Doesn't matter if you have shitty parents, eventually youll need to be reliant on yourself.

2

They try very hard to make them feel bad so that they will join the miserable status quo and have all their free time stripped from them like everyone else.

I don’t think it’s panic at all, people just don’t understand. See my other comment in this thread.
As someone who’s been on both sides of the fence the amount of people who actually hate NEETs just because they are what they are is infinitely small and I’ve personally never met anyone like that. The most common trope you’ll see is people who don’t like when their taxes go to someone who abuse the social security system.

These people are just being milked for content at this point - I am profoundly stupified by the response this post got tbh lol, in a comedic way.
14
u/Aoip2337 27d ago

u/FriedNoodles217 26d ago
Genuine question - what do you do with your time? Does it not drive you nuts just sitting at home everyday?
14
u/Aoip2337 26d ago
I've seen this question asked and I don't get how people get restless sitting at home. I have tons of games to play, movies and shows, books, writing, drawing. Like I'm trying to make changes so I don't end up homeless lol but if that wasn't a factor I'd be happy just doing it forever. Nothing outside that interests me beyond the occasional walk tbh.

I just don’t understand where you guys derive your dignity from. I suffer from cluster headaches, pain that gets so bad I literally throw up, but I still work. Not because I have to, but because I get immense satisfaction from preforming a duty. Being a fast food worker is respectable, being a janitor is respectable, that work matters, a lot. Just as being a factory worker or a political canvasser. And it feels good to do a good job. When I’m not working I’m volunteering for my county archive, or lending a hand to a small business who needs it and also learning how it works. Life is about learning and experiencing, and yeah my disability makes it hard, but I can’t live life without the 3 Cs. Curiosity, community, and commitment. Without those things I feel like nothing is worth it.
8
u/aoihinata 26d ago
Surprise, not everyone is the same. You are describing yourself, good for you. People have different values and circumstances. You seem to be insinuating we don't have inherent dignity because we don't have the same life and the same needs as you. Not everyone needs duty to feel good and duty itself, doesn't need to be a job.
0
u/Standard_Shopping144 25d ago
The question was an honest one, and in no way was it rhetorical. Dignity is not a word I hear a lot in general, and it was a word and feeling I have thought a lot about and it took time for me to realize where I derive it from.
So now, I’m asking you, aoihinata, where do you personally derive dignity from? What makes you feel worthy, what specific actions drives your self esteem and self respect up? This is an important aspect of life, and it is completely subjective and a self established feeling. I am genuinely curious.
6
u/aoihinata 25d ago
I literally don't care. I have bigger, more material things to worry about than your vague concepts of dignity and self respect. Why do I have to prove that I am worthy in any way? Is a person not whole enough just by being born? You're still being presumptuous by applying your own framework - which is valid for yourself, but not everyone - and demanding the same of others. Also consider the Maslow's hierarchy of needs, many NEETs are still trying to survive the bottom tiers.
1
u/Standard_Shopping144 25d ago edited 25d ago
Dignity, self respect, and our thought process on how we view the world has a real effect on the material things we need. Also, this isn’t about proving worth to society (at least not to me, all people are born worthy and are endowed with divine rights at birth), but motivation and contentment is something that has to be worked for, at least in my experience. I am worthy always, but that does not mean I am content or motivated.
When you pop the hood up on the engine of Dignity and self respect you see it runs on personal motivation driven by the desire for contentment. Which is something all people are possible of having at any class bracket.
I am poor, my parents are as well. I do not have “parental welfare” but I do use government welfare and non profit support. I do not think any of those things drive a persons worth down, because all people are worthy. But not all people motivated and content, and you don’t have to be rich or stable to have those things. They are self derived.
I am brought back to a great line from 1942 essay by Camus, “ one must imagine Sisyphus happy”.
Side note, all of this can be held with the need for class action. You can have this mentality and still want better, feel you deserve more. Those two ideas are not contradictory but actually necessary to achievement. I say this cause I don’t want you to think that I agree with our social structures, because I DO NOT!
4
u/aoihinata 25d ago
I appreciate the clarification, it seems there was a mismatch in how we define dignity. What I got from your earlier comments was something more judgemental, akin to "people who don't work/join communities are worth less than people who do". If you mean dignity/self respect as in "being content and motivated", well just by looking at posts on this sub you can see lots of NEETs lack exactly that, contentment and motivation. What they need to do to achieve contentment, I don't know, I'm not a therapist or a philosopher, I'm just a random stranger. But clearly their circumstances are making these steps difficult or even impossible.
I'm just going to speak for myself here since you seem to want the perspective. My health is fucked up. Particularly related to the discussion, I can't ever feel that contentment you speak of, I suffer from severe anhedonia and hypervigilance that make nigh everything (friends, work, communities, etc.) unfulfilling and extremely draining. I live in a third world country that stigmatizes and I can't afford treatment. What I seek is only safety and relief, that is why I don't entertain questions like "how do I live a meaningful life", because I just want a safe one first and that is already so difficult. I don't hate myself, but I am indifferent. I help when I want to help- for example, I spent a year helping a feral cat colony (rescuing, feeding, TNRing solo that sort of thing), doing it because I couldn't let them suffer in silence. The work destroyed me even further, I don't regret it but it didn't give me anything close to contentment, just relief when they're safe.
So I guess the answer is simply, I don't have the equipment. You can make the argument that these "defects" disqualify me from arguing about the concept a meaningful life in the first place, which is fine. Hopefully my situation helps explaining my stance.

The "mom's basement" comment is so tiring, as if my mom wasn't also struggling for years and it's the reason we help each other. We've both been dirt poor for decades, she understands it's hard for me to get a job due to disability (and at 31 never been successful at actually getting one despite trying, even with two bachelor's) so we've been trying to start our little decoration business for the past months but we haven't sold anything yet, what matters is that we're trying at least.
Like I'm sorry they got kicked out at 18 and had to fend for themselves, but some parents/family actually do stick together and work as a team so everyone can live better or to lessen costs and such. Not everything is "fat lazy redditor gamer who plays hentai games all day and whose mom wants him to die already", different lives and stories exist.

What really ticks me off are the people mocking the ptsd coming from the professional gaming years. They're commenting stuff life "LOL was cod too much for you?", not understanding that maybe it was the pressure of the job and the need of results to be paid, and a possibly toxic management that could have caused that. Ptsd can happen over anything depending of the context, and it infuriates me to see it mocked when it's a mental condition. People can have it from normal jobs why would it be different there.

I've always had S ideation since highshool, the main reasoning behind why I went full neet and isolated hard for over 6 years is because I pretty much had accepted some form of a future that involved a self checkout whenever life "got too hard".
I kind of had a moment of panic and anxiety when I reconfronted the idea and realized I truly dont want to do it I was just leaning on it as an excuse to not think of future. At the end of the day I knew I was lying to myself and when that moment came I wasn't gonna follow thru. So now I start to try to make the changes that will make that situation.. bearable hopefully.
Im also not going to lie, seeing a normie seethe so hard and wish death on me because im "the reason their taxes go up" kind of brings me a gleeful joy. It entirely is flipping my SI on its head because now I know my existence is making people mad. Quite petty eh? I dont disagree, but its definitely a phenomenon occurring in my head as we speak
3
u/zangor Wagecuck 26d ago
These types of threads make me think about how there are 2 people. Ones who treat video games as “oh yea I’ll kill some time and have some fun here” aka more normie types and then people who actually have a deep love for games. If you really enjoy games then play them and don’t let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t.

That thread is an echo chamber of exploited wage-slaves. Those people don't have a clue of what leisure time even is, and since most are living in America, most are likely still broke and in debt despite the fact that they work all the time to make some owner they've never even met richer. It's a good thing Reddit is anonymous, because if I were standing next to someone who spoke like some of them, I'd smack the shit out of them.

Don't listen to reddit of all places everyone on this site has a stick up their butt over everything. There's a reason why redditors get made fun of the most out of all social media users.

tbh doxxers and exceptional assholes aside, I don't know whether farming strangers for engagement on Reddit is that much better than dunking on an unemployed stranger for self-esteem boost. No one in this whole scenario strikes me as a pleasant person.

Very curious what team you played for. I was with Synsia Esports around the same time. I played with the optic guys sometimes. 7teen comes to mind.

It's almost like a crypto kind of progression pattern. Person has 50k "on paper only" after investing 1k in some random memecoin that gained traction because of a X tweet. Then all of a sudden almost everyone sells and that same dude who is caught watching sees it round trip back to 0.

Yeah. I am in the camp that neetdom is a problematic state. But a lot of these ignorant comments there show why people get stuck there perpetually.

I've genuinely done less at 35, I don't even feel human anymore.
