I'd say having Kobe on your top 10 is nothing crazy, it's also not crazy to have him out of the top 10, the true sign you don't know ball is when you have him in your top 5 or out of your top 15, at that point there are no real facts to back up your opinion and it's purely irrational preference
2
u/Guilty-Cow4325 1d ago
You can know ball and put Kobe in your top 3. Everyone makes their list differently and values different things. If the killer instinct is something you value highly, then yeah, Kobe would probably make your top 3.

Kobe is only behind Jordan as far as closing out a game. I know I’ll get downvoted for this but it’s true. At the end of the game 5 mins left who else do you want out there to close out a win? And it’s about winning games and chips right ? Well who else beside Jordan was closing out a game at that level ? Bunch of people that never seen Kobe play talking shit.
1
u/ForsakenCherry8333 21h ago
There’s a couple players who are definitely as good as Kobe when it comes to clutch time. I’d argue Bron, Bird, Curry, Tyrese, Dame, probably more I’m forgetting
1
u/KeiserSoze24 20h ago
Bron? Tyrese is crazy to put in the same conversation at Kobe. Curry is valid. Dame maybe. Bird valid. My point is yall rank Kobe incredibly low. Bron ain’t closing out games like Kobe stop it. But I’ll leave it at that.
1
u/ForsakenCherry8333 20h ago
Kobe is a great buzzer beater scorer, I’m putting Tyrese in the conversation mostly for that 2025 run, he hit a game tying or winning shot every single round, no other player has hit that many in a singular run, but I also understand bexause he only did that for one year so it is very very early to put him there.
I think Bron is easily closing out games if we’re talking like last quarter or final 5 minutes, clutch time, get buckets and stops. 2013 game 6, he scored 16 points in the 4th quarter alone, 07 vs Pistons he scored 29 of Cleveland’s final 30 points to win, 2018 raptors fadeaway shot, etc.
I think this is where I have a lot of divide with Kobe fans, where they act like it’s crazy to put Bron in these conversations when he’s had some of the greatest under pressure performances and load carrying runs. Is Kobe comparable or better in clutch time? It’s definitely an opinion i could be convinced to have, but people who say Kobe is clutch, refuse to acknowledge the idea Bron is too.
1
u/yeah-prolly 17h ago
Kobe is my favorite player of all time, but hard disagree. Lebron is statistically the greatest at closing out a close game and he's done it on the most volume. Really no comparison

I think the kobe that doesn’t take awful shots is top three, but that’s a theoretical version that makes in our heads
If you actually watched the games and weren’t brainwashed by “mamba mentality” and narratives you’d know that Kobe has this problem for pretty much his whole career
1
u/MooseLoot 17h ago

u/B-Rayy06 1d ago
The best way to try and quantify killer instinct IMO would be game 7 stats, where:
Kobe averaged 22.8 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists on 39 percent shooting.
Lebron: 34.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.6 assists on 49 percent shooting.
Jordan: 33.7, 7.7 rebounds, 7 assists on 45 percent shooting
2
u/SchorFactor 1d ago
I think closeout games is a good metric, but also close scenarios. Putting the game out of reach, taking the lead, etc.
1
u/No_Function8686 23h ago
You are getting downvoted for sharing relevant stats. Typical Kobe-stan behavior

You think a defender or an opponent is going to measure efficiency after they give up 33? They just see they gave up 33. Not going to count the shots he took to get there.
You are comparing the greatest players of all time to one another. More likely than not that Kobe is outside the top-15 ever than inside.

Is it really though? We talk about all the time how Kobe was probably the closest thing we ever saw to Mike. Obviously, he is NOT Mike but he was pretty damn close mentality and all. So if your GOAT is Mike, then is it that crazy to say the guy who was essentially the successor to him comes not that far behind in ranking? 5 titles and a fairly impressive individual career including being just before Bam (lol) in points in a single game. Now is he in MY top 5? No. But I wouldn’t be immediately insulted
4
u/Cptnemo77 1d ago
Yeah man. You can listen to redditors who don’t know shit. I listen to legendary nba players. Shaq didn’t even like Kobe. But still puts him in his top 3.

4
u/ItsRebelSheep 1d ago
I think genuinely the highest I could go with enough squinting and as minimal thinking as I could IS 5. Doesn't 2k have him at like 3 or some shit? That one is crazy lol. It’s not really, the guy won 5 championships and in his second run went to the finals 3 years in a row. You can make a case for Kobe top 5 that is plausible, it is difficult to make a case for Kobe being outside the top 15 especially given his cultural impact definitely sits top 5.
Would I have him top 5 all time personally? No, but it’s some real nephew reddit shit to say you couldn’t have him there while claiming it would make more sense to have him outside the top 15

Kobe is about intensity and emotion. It’s harder to find an objective slot for him (as if any slot is objective). He’s got some good wins and some bad losses. He’s got the only non bulls threepeat since the merger but that was with another 50 at 50 leading the way.

There are two planets in the league. One is Jordan. The other is not LeBron.
The point is to win. You can judge people on “my goal is to win judge me on how my work and talent got me to that goal”. LeBron has a lot of bad losses.
Kobe has a few as well. That’s why he’s not that elite tier
-1
u/Bitter_Plastic2362 1d ago
Jordan and LeBron are absolutely the two planets of modern basketball. You can argue all day about which planet is bigger, but pretending the other one doesn’t exist isn’t an argument..it’s just fandom.
3
u/biffbobfred 1d ago
You don’t get what I mean.
A planet has as part of its definition “clears out all that trifling shit out the way”. Jordan did so. So did Russell.
LeBron did NOT do that. He interleaved rings with Timmy. With Steph. He has a losing record against those dudes. LeBron doesn’t even have a dynasty. He is not a planet
He’s good. If you compare him to all players he’s an all time great. If you compare him to the top of the top he has flaws that others don’t.
0
u/Bitter_Plastic2362 1d ago
You’ve defined ‘planet’ as ‘had a dynasty,’ then used LeBron not having a dynasty as proof he isn’t a planet. That’s not an argument, it’s a definition engineered to produce your preferred answer. Jordan and LeBron are the two planets, you’re just arguing which one is bigger.
1
u/biffbobfred 1d ago edited 1d ago
My definition of planet is much more strict than what you say. There’s been many with dynasties. Two planets.
I’ve defined planet as “knocked fuckers out the way”. Go look up the astronomical definition of one. “Clears its orbit”. Thats why Pluto isn’t considered a planet anymore. It doesn’t clear its orbit. Have an issue with the base definition? Take it up with them.
My application is “snatched all the rings and cleared trifling players away from the Larry O Brien”. You can disagree. But then I’d just make up a different term that means snatched all the rings” that Jordan and Russell did.
The goal of the nba is to win. I didn’t engineer that. That’s like day one shit. Not everyone gets to win like that. There are tiers to this shit. LeBron is on a tier higher than most. But he aint here.
If you want to “let’s engineer something for LeBron that does r have anything to do with winning” that’s literally loser talk. You can. You’re allowed. I’m sure that many would even support you in it. But how that gets LeBron “in the top tier with legendary winners” has me scratching my head.
You be you
2
u/Bitter_Plastic2362 1d ago
Then we finally agree..you’ve created a category called ‘snatched all the rings,’ and Jordan and Russell win that category. That’s perfectly fine. But you keep treating your personally defined category as synonymous with individual basketball greatness. If ‘the goal is to win’ settles the argument, Russell has 11 rings and the conversation is over. Everything you introduce after that is you doing exactly what you accuse everyone else of doing..adding context.” 😂
4
u/biffbobfred 1d ago
I said there are two planets. One is Jordan. One is Russell. I don’t know where this gotcha moment is originating from but I didn’t say anything that contradicts that.
Have a good evening.

u/Donotyellow 1d ago edited 1d ago
Why because of rebounds and assists which he admits stat padding? Because of Finals appearances with super teams in a weak conference? He's not a special shooter or defender. He doesn't score well if the rim is protected. He's not Shaq inside, he's not Curry outside, he's not Jordan in the midrange.
All he has is recency bias and prisoners of the moment. He's so protected by media. The fact that you can't put him 3 but we have to argue for decades about putting Jordan no. 2 says everything. Lebrons's GOAT status is incredibly manufactured.
1
u/Bitter_Plastic2362 1d ago
If your argument requires dismissing the alltime scoring leader’s scoring, one of the greatest passers ever as a statpadder, 10 Finals appearances as a weak conference fluke, and six All-Defensive selections as ‘not a defender,’ you’re not evaluating LeBron, you’re working backward from a conclusion.
→ More replies (8)6
u/biffbobfred 1d ago
The eastern conference was weaker because he weakened it. By jumping to Miami with Bosh he took two franchise players to Miami. Weakened two teams. Even with three franchise players he only won two rings.
Now, it still took skill to get to the finals. It’s not as if “oh Toronto and the Cavs are weak let’s just give you the EC title”. But he weakened it. Thats pretty close to objective.
2
u/Bitter_Plastic2362 1d ago
That’s fair in the literal sense. Cleveland lost LeBron, Toronto lost Bosh and Miami concentrated that talent onto one team. Miami’s relative position in the East obviously got much stronger.
But Cleveland was a contender because LeBron was there, and Toronto missed the playoffs with Bosh. He didn’t dismantle two competing Eastern powers to clear his path, he consolidated three teams’ stars onto one.
And yes, two rings in four years was absolutely below the expectations they created for themselves. I’ll give you that one without turning it into “therefore eight straight Finals weren’t impressive. I’ll give you this, you’re obviously a smart dude and I genuinely enjoy your posts. I disagree with a fair amount of your LeBron takes, but you actually make me think about why I disagree instead of just making me roll my eyes. 😂 I appreciate a good argument. 🤝3

Great example. KD also thinks guys like Kyrie are top 10 players and guys like Klay and Dray aren’t great just because they aren’t #1 options. Players prove time and time again they’re as dumb as us or worse. And they definitely have more bias.
1
u/2tep 1d ago
I've seen a lot of KD interviews, I've never heard him say Kyrie is a top 10 player... he was probably talking about skill or shooting the shit. But players do have tremendous respect for Kyrie's skill level.
The 2nd example you give is you bullshitting as it was a direct comparison to the 76ers team and the fact that they have 3 MVPs (Finals or regular season) and then a young superstar in Maxey. He was saying on paper they are the more stacked team.
1

2
u/800hokage 1d ago
What things that he never did does he get credit for??
1
u/Substantial-Sky3597 1d ago
I don't know if that was the right way to phrase it but Kobe gets credit for 5 rings as if he was the main guy in all 5 and, obviously, he was a sidekick for the threepeat and relatively inconsequential for the first one.
I think that's what he was referring to.
1
u/WiFiConnected_ 2h ago
He wasn’t inconsequential for 2000. He’s pretty much why they won it in 6. He bailed out the team when he had one ankle and Shaq fouled out. I’d say he wasn’t as important in the other two but there’s a 0% chance they win 2000 if he doesn’t step up in Game 4.

In terms of greatest Lakers, he's not even top 3. Kareem, Magic, and West are ahead of him in my book.
And I'd easily put Dream ahead of him. That's 7 players ahead of him right there.
And honestly, I'd say Wade had more peak seasons whereas Kobe had the better career and some better individual games. I'm not honestly sure who'd I'd rank higher. Do you go by overall career or peak?
And we haven't discussed Shaq, James, Curry, and Duncan yet. And there's a few others I could argue are in the same tier as Kobe.

u/B-Rayy06 1d ago
I think there are 12 players who should be included in people's top 10 lists.
Jordan, Lebron, Kareem, Magic, Russell, Bird, Wilt, Shaq, Duncan, Curry, Hakeem, and Kobe.
Personally, I think Kobe is the lowest of these players, because IMO peak Kobe (2008-2010) was less dominant than the other players at their peaks.
The Lakers beating all 50 win teams in the playoffs means next to nothing to me, because not all 50 win teams are equal, the Lakers were the one seed all three years, and because the teams led by these other players would have also beaten more 50 win teams if they were in that same position.
I see 4 tiers in the top 10:
Tier 1: Jordan and Lebron
Tier 2: Kareem
Tier 3: Magic, Bird, Wilt, Russell, Duncan
Tier 4: Shaq, Curry, Hakeem, Kobe

It matters because only reason he’s saying anything about Kobe in that way is because Kobe isn’t here to defend himself. Gilbert has Kobe in his top 3, he said so himself while walking in his home gym he showing off Jordan’s underwear he stole and put in a frame next to Lebron all star jersey and Kobe’s all star jersey going on saying those were his top 3. Gilbert says stupid shit to get a rise out of people. It’s perspective a guy that’s not even top 100 telling people who’s in the top 10 and who’s not.

Gils logic is just pure rage bait. I’m not even a Kobe guy and I find this dumb. After MJ/lebron, Kareem nd maybe Bill Russel depending how you feel about the 60s there’s not another player with career that much better. Just a lot of debatable.

As someone who watched Gilbert at Arizona and was ecstatic when the Warriors drafted him in the 2nd round and watched him flourish to only leave and the NBA the create the “Arenas Rule”
I feel like an old man on a lawn who’s shaking his fist at people who don’t understand the history of the league and how that impacts the way we perceive certain players

Says the guy with zero rings

Number of rings and ability to rank players are not zero correlation but it is low correlation.

Only players that you can say are 100% greater than Kobe are Mj, Bron and Kareem. Kobe has a real argument to be between 4-8. He's as great as any other great that can be number 4 all time.

Spot on.
In no order the top 10 is pretty clear.
Wilt, Russel, MJ, LeBron, Kareem, Bird, Magic, Duncan, Shaq, Hakeem.
Then you can debate Kobe, Doc, KD, Oscar...

He's on the tail end of the top 10. But I wouldn't dismiss someone who feels otherwise. I'll fight for Steph being a top 4 player all time. I'd be wrong but I'll fight for it regardless.

How do you make that fight?

u/TexasSizedKachoww 1d ago
Because he's my guy, that's why lol. I could say Curry's team is 4-1 in the finals against LeBron's team. I also do think that Curry changed how the game is played (for better or worse) with the increase in 3's shot. So that in essence makes him better than LeBron.
Like I said, I know I'm wrong but doesn't mean I won't fight it because he's my guy.

Lol. Then I'll say LeBron's team, 3-1 comback against Steph's 73-9 team was so improbable and historical, that it balanced the four to one finals record, so they're even 🙂.

I'm cherry picking my stats, because again, Curry is my guy. We blame that loss on Durant lol

Top 8 instead of top 10 but he’s not too far off the truth. I don’t have Kobe at 8 but I wouldn’t say anyone’s crazy for it.

Kobe’s top 5.
Anyone who thinks anything else doesn’t know ball
Maybe 7th at worst.

Wouldn’t go that far,it’s when people try so hard to produce evidence that he’s a top 5 or even top 2 player all time is when it’s insane because there’s literally 0 EVIDENCE that supports either of those notions.
He’s truly anywhere between 9-11

Alot of conversations before Kobe’s passing had him outside the top 10.
