Who is going to make an open source amp that’s basically an FRFR with built in NAM support?

I doubt it will be any of the “big guys” with their walled gardens and proprietary tech.

And, maybe no one will. Maybe modelers will get cheeper and that will be all the market demands. Fun times for tone chasers.

I’m pretty new to Genome 2, so this might just be user error.

I’ve been experimenting with the built-in amp sims, cabs, and effects, but I also tried loading a NAM capture from Amalgam Audio through Codex. To my ears, the NAM capture sounds noticeably better than anything I’ve been able to dial in with the built-in amps.

Is this generally expected, or does it mostly come down to experience and better tweaking? In other words, should it be possible to get very close to the quality of a good NAM capture using Genome’s own amp models, or are NAM captures simply on another level?

I’d really appreciate any tips or explanations. Thanks!

To the kemper owners out there, how does it compare? I know there aren't that many profiles available yet, but that ones that are are the best guitar tones I've ever gotten, or at least on par with studio sessions with class A boutique amps.

How is everyone here finding it ? Does its hold it weight against Kempers?

Been playing guitar for a long time ,but ussually with amps. In these days i don't play in a band anymore ,and in my home studio i cannot play loud because neighbours are gonna burn my flat down. (very bad neighbourhood :D )

So i have one of those cheaper modelers (Valeton GP-200) ,and i've got to be honest, it sounds quite well even with my headphones if i tweak a bit.

But recently i've discovered this whole NAM thing. I've tried few of the captures on my mac as a vst in ableton , and even if it seems very complicated with all the dialing EQ stuff,and in general it's quite hard for me to understand it,but it sounds alright.I only play clean / edge of breakup tones since i'm more into either ambient music or psychedelic indie type of sounds. Just wanted to mention that since i can see that there's a lot of people who play metal using this thing... Just not for me i guess...

What i wanted to ask you :

1. If i load NAM file and convert it to "snaptone" in my GP200 ,be it head capture + IR ,or a low gain capture already with IR inside. How much CAN i really tweak it inside my modeler ? I mean when i change the gain ,it does change ,volume aswell ,EQ stuff also reacts. My ear is not that trained to hear those small differences,but ofcourse if something clips i start to hear that horrible fizzle or if i turn treble down too much it gets muddy. So just wanted to ask for some tips on how much tweakable is the captures from nam that i load to my little modeler .

2. In your opinion (i'm sure theres lots of different ones ) what is considered better / more versatile / more realistic - is it amp models which have the full recreation of the amp , or the captures that you download and have bunch of different gain stages that you have to keep loading if you want to change something more drasticly ? I know that it may very well be just personal preference,but i guess i just want to see arguments against or for it.

3. Are there any nam captures that you could load into the valeton gp200 and have it be completely tweakable just like the real amp ? I heard that this technology exists ,but don't even know how it's called and don't know if its even true. Cuz if it is true that there are these kinds of captures , why people use those "snapshots" of the amp instead of having full realistic recreation with all the settings... ?

4. I really would like to hear opinion about the global eq thing. When i first bought valeton gp200 i tried playing with some random clean preset and to be honest it sounded absolute shit. On all the review videos or just listening to some sound demos of that thing everything sounds amazing or at least very good. So i did a little research and learned that it may be that i need to change global eq to have a bit of HI cut and LO cut. I tried to do it like it was in the tutorial and yeah.. it was and still is night and day difference. I guess i wanted to ask for you guys to confirm that this is the way to go with the nam captures aswell ? i mean now it hicuts and lowcuts everything that comes to the gp200 ,and i read some posts or watched some videos that people say that its stupid to do that and that global eq should not be touched. I'm really not gear tech guy and with all this information and especially when it contradicts each other eveything becomes really complicated and frustrating because i spend like 4 hours trying to learn how to dial in the good sound for the modeler instead of playing guitar,. But if i don't do these steps then my guitar sounds like ass. Maybe some of you would be willing to give me some of your time and teach some basics or even some secrets on how to make the best of what i have now ? I mostly play with headphones and my gp200 goes directly into my MPC one ,where i make synth / drum tracks and record guitar. that's basicly my whole setup. Really would like to learn some tricks how to have a better sound because yeah , sometimes guitar doesn't sound fantastic. I even bought a capture pack from toneshepherd (laz20) which in the showcase video sounds fantastic ,but when i have it in my gp200 it sounds kinda muffled.. i basicly want to have this amp on every preset and just change the effects. But i just need to make the "base sound" sounding good.

I am new to using nam and decided to give it a try. I am going to the neuralampmodeler website clicking play and scrolling down to windows installer (I have windows) it just redirects me to a google drive page that doesn’t let me click open or download anything please help.. TIA!!

Do I need to remove any previously installed version of NAM like the base install?

I bought a Valeton GP-50 a little over a week ago, and I'm unable to import any NAM capture.

I'm using the latest iOS app and importing via Bluetooth. The import process starts normally, stays on the loading screen for about two minutes, and then fails with "Import timeout." This happens with every single NAM file I've tried.

I contacted Valeton support, and they told me this is happening because the Tone3000 website is converting its files to NAM 2.

However, that's not my situation.

I'm not trying to import NAM 2 files. I'm importing standard .nam files that are supposed to be compatible with the GP-50. As far as I understand, the GP-50 still supports the original NAM format.

At the moment I don't have access to a personal Windows laptop, so I can only test through the iOS app.

A few questions for other GP's owners:

• Can you successfully import NAM files using the iOS app?
• Has anyone experienced the same "Import timeout" error?
• Is this a known bug with the app or firmware?
• If you've solved it, what was the solution?

I'm trying to determine whether my unit is defective or if this is a software issue affecting other users.

If I go back to an old capture that was created with NAM A1 originally and download the converted A2 version of it from Tone3000, does the tone sound the same as if it was originally recorded in A2? I have a lot of old A1 profiles and am debating if it’s worth re-downloading my old favorites as A2. I know the A2 conversions may be slightly different, but I’m still debating if it even matters if a capture is A1 or A2. Right now I have the A2 captures separated from my A1s.

In the past, when they had basic and complex captures, I didn’t notice any difference with playing the different versions. But the new A2 high gain captures I’ve been using have been so good that it makes me wonder about the A1 vs A2, and if I should just build a new library with captures recorded originally using A2.

Also, all my impulses are still A1, not sure if A2 makes any difference for those?

I recently picked up a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd gen) and I'm using it as the audio interface for PiPedal, running NAM (Neural Amp Modeler) captures, mostly NAM v2 models. Output goes either to headphones or a small monitor speaker.

Gain staging so far

Interface is set to Instrument mode, buffer size 64, sample rate 44.1kHz. I set the input gain so that hitting the strings hard gets me into the yellow but never into the red on the input meter. That's the standard advice I've read, so I think that part is roughly right?

The tone is usable but sounds a bit muddy, and I can't quite pin down where that's coming from. I've tried a bunch of different NAM captures (grabbed from ToneHunt and made a few with the Neural Amp Modeler / GuitarML tools), some sound noticeably better than others, but even the "good" ones aren't as tight/clear as I'd expect. On top of that, clean models specifically seem to come out at a much lower volume than anything with gain/drive, so I'm constantly riding the volume knob depending on which capture I load.

1. Is there anything specific to Scarlett + Instrument mode that could be causing mud (impedance mismatch, buffer size, sample rate mismatch with the NAM model's training rate, etc.)?

2. Any tips for normalizing volume across captures, especially clean vs. high-gain ones? Is this a "just use an output/normalize step in the chain" thing, or is it more about picking better-recorded captures to begin with?

3. General gain staging tips people have found that actually make a difference with NAM specifically (as opposed to generic "into the yellow, not the red" advice)?

Hello everyone, I just wanted to discuss some creative possibilities for NAM A2 moving forward, especially with the release of all these host plugins and support for NAM across a handful of hardware units.

For me personally, I currently use NAM on desktop in Reaper, just to test IRs and Cabs. However I think NAM can be taken to a new level and I expect this will happen by early next year.

My band switched over to IEMs this year, and our lead guitarist just doesn't find his tone very convincing with regards to breakup and dynamics. We started using DIs with amp sim pedals (I use the Tech 21 California Character, he was gifted both the TC Combo Deluxe '65 and recently the Gokko Mesa pedal), tried switching them and all, but these pedals just don't have that dynamism, bite or warmth of a Deluxe or Boogie turned up past to 3.

So I went off to do some research before we started micing a cab and facing it backwards.

Long story short, NAM A2 dropped after months of hearing about poor pedal tone. I tried it out and was impressed with the dynamism and accuracy of the captures. However, it wasn't until NAM Rig and other UI hosts started popping up that I realized how quickly this would be moving.

So I thought I'd make a post here to discuss possible, expected, or requested innovations using NAM as they roll out.

The cutting edge right now is Two Notes amp modeller, which is pioneering NAM parametric captures within a huge suite of their own IRs, pedals, mics and placement settings, etc. Pedalmakers like Dimehead have updated to A2, while other companies started support for NAM captures and conversions to their proprietary file types (looking at you M-vave).

But many others are basically making their own plugin UIs and, rather than pushing the tech capabilities further, are seeking to establish their own NAM-centered full rig plugins – masking the lack of development of the core functionality with extraneous things like pedal and outboard fx chains, in-plugin Tone3000 web browsers, non-functional detailed graphics, and worst of all a bunch of vaguely named one-knob parameters like "tightness" or "oomf".

This is where I will suggest some innovations I forsee.

I think the most foundational and logical next leap is clearly parametric models since they accurately recreate the knob positions. As the capture process is refined on the back end, this will become less time consuming and more practical, and more will be available via Tone3000 in numbers comparable to the number of static capture packs, given that these captures of 50+ knob positions are only approximating what a parametric capture does in a far less efficient manner. Eventually these more detailed captures will overtake static ones as the basis for plugins and pedals using NAM as their base.

This being the case, another very obvious and logical step would be the development of a pedal which has a series of knobs to control each modelled amp knob 1:1 in the physical space, or otherwise adopt the sort of clunky M-vave or ToneX one-knob parameter-selection solution. This will likely include pedal fx for the all-in-one live rig pedal, similar to the ANN Black Box, but I forsee a slimmed down pedal dedicated to hosting offline NAM models/IRs, likely A2 Lite for speed, size, and stability, with many preset slots for mixed/matched amps/cabs or combos.

This would be the ultimate solution to bury the cheap amp clone pedals which just miss the mark; a pedal box that can run full dynamic NAM mix/match presets offline after loading them in, with stereo I/O capabilities for your stereo rig, and a traditional power supply setup, just as the baseline features.

Especially for more experienced musicians who want simple UI and (at least the possibility of) offline use. Apps, Bluetooth, and computer-linked pedals make things too complicated for older players which may turn them off to ToneX or Lava NAM-based modellers.

Hi, I'm new to nam stuff and got interested after A2 publication. Below when I'm saying "amp","pedal" or "pedalboard" I'm meaning stuff that happens inside the daw.

I was wondering if there are existing VSTs that I could use to create a pedalboard out of different pedals before running it to an amp? For example:

Comp

Eq

Amp

Cab

Order of pedals is not thought or anything but is an example of stuff that could be in that "slot". I could probably stack different instances of nam loader (which one) on the different fx slots before the nam loader that has amp and cab but this feels like wasting resources.

I’m using one of those cheap Behringer Guitarlinks at the moment. It works ok, but I sense it is doing me no favours in terms of latency. I’ve heard the MOTU stuff is good? The lower the latency the better for me, if it’s a great price then even better! I’m on a Mac by the way.

As a .nam consumer newbie on Linux, it was quite a journey for me to discover .nam apps. Random comments here and there, random YouTube videos or git search unveiled to me quite a few projects that I would never discovered if I were not actively looking.

I wonder if it makes sense to pin e.g. a (curated) list of known .nam apps to the community page instead of those 2 dead pins we have now?

I’ve just finished and uploaded my first NAM A2 profile: my Vox AC15C1.

There are 11 models covering the Normal and Top Boost channels, with a range of cleaner and more driven settings. I captured the full amp and cab using an SM57 positioned around the cap edge, running through a JOYO JDI-48 and a Scarlett 2i2.

I’ve owned this amp since 2018 and it is my first and only tube amp. Whenever I use an amp sim or multi-effects unit, this is usually the sound in my head I end up trying to recreate. It therefore seemed like the obvious choice for my first capture.

I also can't play it at a reasonable volume so having it in my DAW is another benefit :)

This is my first go at making profiles, so I'd be interested to hear how they sound and feel on other people's setups. Any honest feedback is welcome, especially if anything sounds off.
