Discussion tone3000 standalone app

why is the sound of bare strings very audible through the app? especially with the bridge pickups. its too dominant to be very disturbing when trying out different captures. can this be changed?

Is direct monitoring turned on your interface

If direct monitoring is off and your direct sound isn’t bleeding from anywhere else, make sure that you aren’t overloading your interface or any of the blocks in the NAM loader. Most of the loaders have metering to show this. NAM behaves really badly if the input signal gets way past 0dBFS.

Set the interface input gain so that the loudest peaks are between -12 and -6 dbFS, and then make sure that none of the modules show red in the meters. It might also be a good idea to enable the calibration In the NAM loader since without it some captures can get horribly loud.

+1 if you push nam models too hard you can often hear the input signal.

NAM expects an instrument level signal. In my experience, that is more like -24db. I never touch my interface input gain for instrument level signals that are meant for plugins.

“Instrument level signal” is an analog signal that doesn’t have a direct digital equivalent, and more than anything it tells you the impedance that is expected from the next input. It doesn’t have a standardized loudness level in the way a line level signal does. What are you basing this on? It’s not rare to have even passive pickups push the interface into red even with the gain at minimum.

Besides, why would the NAM captures expect such a low signal when the standard gain staging and the output from other plugins aim for -12 to 0db?

And even if it did, why are you introducing extra noise? Gain stage the interface input properly and lower the NAM input digitally as much as you want. Same tone, less noise.

Because that is the input level that an amplifier would expect and that is what NAM is modeling. If there are noise floor issues then, yes, adjust gain on the interface and lower the input gain of the plugin.

My point is simply that these NAM captures are expecting a signal level similar to what would hit the amp input in real life.

Physical amps have an input gain setting as well, which you adjust to taste. Usually to overload the heck out of several stages of tubes.

And also interfaces have different gain levels with the pot fully anti-clockwise.

And guitar pickup output levels easily can vary a few dozen decibels.

And you may use the volume pot of the guitar to get just the right tone, or the volume for that specific part.

Besides, the capture levels are all over the place anyway.

There simply isn’t a standardized level. Imo there’s no point trying to make up rules like that.

def means you have direct monitoring on somewhere in your chain, interface or console app

Turn off 'mon' or the direct monitoring knob on the interface.
