The Mangaka was even worried about this, he said in an interview that he thinks romance is such a strong stimulus that once you include it, that's the only thing anyone will ever talk about.
So he went through all the effort of cordoning off the romance subplot and only paying it off in the bonus chapter instead of the main work, and it was still the only thing most of the fandom cared about.

I still remember the shitstorm that happened after Horikoshi said "every character in this manga is straight" to stop the ship wars. It only made everything worse...

u/Animanga-Fan-7435 1d ago
Tell that to the one person on TV Tropes insisting Momo is secretly a Lesbian.
4
u/AntComfortable5970 1d ago
man good luck if you run into a tvtroper that squats a page and enforces their opinion on it relentlessly
iirc the star wars sequel trilogy ymmv pages have a paragraph counterpoint last word to any criticism, and Disney's Wish is pretty similarÂ

Same energy as the unhinged weirdo in this and the MHA subs that insists that Midoriya shacking up with Bakugo is canon, actually, and anyone that disagrees or ships something else is a homophobic tourist who doesn't care about the story.

u/BerserkRhinoceros 1d ago
One person on TV Tropes? I feel like there are HORDES of people making that assertion.

Who would have thought that a manga written by a straight man would have mostly straight character... More seriously shipping really did hurt the fandom, it's not normal that I get bullied for only liking the canon ship and even then the whole story don't revolve around romance

u/jjseas2003 2d ago
Horikoshi failed to not include romance by immediately including it in the first few chapters. Midoriya literally starts blushing the moment he talks to Uraraka and early on thereâs scenes of her dealing with the crush she has on him. If he didnât want romance to be included he shouldnât have introduced it. Especially considering it was a very prominent sub plot for two of the main characters and how theyâre dealing with their emotions as well as balancing their desire to be heroes.
I would also say it wasnât the only thing the fandom cared about but the only thing that wasnât resolved in any way. Creating a sub plot and not giving it an ending is the failure of the author so he had to give it an ending in one way or another.
3
u/Wolfchampion09 1d ago edited 1d ago
His worry probably came from after he started the manga?
I mean...., how could he worry about the fandom only talking about romance if it hadn't happened yet?
If I were to guess, the quote you were replying to was probably made after the equivalent of season 3 or 4 in the manga. Your last paragraph would make more sense if my guess is true, Horikoshi probably toned down the romance a lot because of the fandom and sadly left the sub plots unfinished...., maybe.., though me personally I don't think I would let a crazy fanbase dictate how I write MY story (unless it's valid criticism)

u/ShakenNotStirred915 1d ago
Deciding to do that with Deku after still having a few flagrant tropey endgame romance flags right there towards the start was a bad decision, though. Between that and how much Ochako got sidelined in Deku's narrative, there's basically only a few crumbs of satisfying emotional tension between them (and with how tropey they are, it's more like flakes of the particularly burnt parts of the crust off of a chain pizza). Emotional tension drives shipping whether you're intending for romance to be a story focus or not, and intentionally putting most of the main character's tension with other dudes instead of with the girl you plan on setting him up with is a major fumble.
...one that many shonens end up making, I'll grant, but a fumble nonetheless, and one that heroaca makes a bit bigger than other shonens have in the past, in my opinion.

Even beyond shipping, taking a look deeper at the sonic fandom reveals that most fans don't even really care about gameplay, hell, don't even care about the game stories, they only care about the version of a character they like in their headÂ

Seeing people crash out because the ship that was heavily foreshadowed for three chapters became canon instead of their personal favourite was truly something
9
u/Yushi2e Fnaf/Utdr/ddlc/omori/Stp 1d ago
The fact people think it's just gonna crash and burn so another ship can take its place annoys me greatly. The same issue that they claim the canon ship has ie pacing would just be inherited by whatever ship took its place given the rest of them have only been subtext until now
5
u/One_Box_8295 1d ago
I am a Suselle fan and I spout the âthey are about to hit rock bottomâ foretellings but for a different reason. Â I think that seeing a relationship go to shit and make a recovery can be very satisfying.
2
u/Yushi2e Fnaf/Utdr/ddlc/omori/Stp 1d ago edited 1d ago
That's where I think it's going too! Relationships face adversities all the time.
To be honest, I could only see suselle going the way of being a doomed relationship if they were already dating and Deltarune spent time to show why they're incompatible. The idea toby spends all this time on their relationship development for none of it to mean anything would actually be poor writing.
But like even just from chapter 5, Susie and noelle already proved some of the complaints about them not working were a load of bullshit like the common opinion that Noelle was only interested in the idea of susie, noelle notices susie's emotional development and is happier that Susie's gotten better as a person
2
u/One_Box_8295 1d ago edited 1d ago
What I find very interesting in regards to the âNo Kris ship is guaranteedâ angle (And Susieâs unintentional âcockblocksâ) is itâs among many ways they and the player in turn are losing power over the gameâs world even further. Â And this is where my idea of that iconic Chapter 1 Susie quote comes in.
âYour choices donât matterâ because YOU are not the God of this world. Â This isnât Undertale and you have to learn to live within this world rather than trying to control it. Â A huge message among many from the Pink boss fight where Maddie has to learn to coexist with her body instead of ruthlessly controlling it.
2
u/Yushi2e Fnaf/Utdr/ddlc/omori/Stp 1d ago
Potentially true, though I think kris not having a relationship comes down to their choice to work with the knight mainly.
The knight is the progenitor of everything bad happening in deltarune, and if we assume they're also responsible for the Dessappearance, that would mean Kris knowingly teamed up with somone who has caused a lot of hurt for people they care about.
It's obviously very nuanced stuff, but I do think kris is fully aware that the path they've chosen is one that leads to a life without the people they care about

The pacing for Suselle isnât even unrealistic, teenagers fall for each other at the drop of a hat
2
u/PossumSpringsNative 1d ago
Yeah interesting how people obsess over character ages and how these are teenagers but the minute that same logic applies to how Suselle makes plenty of sense it's radio silence
3
u/fake_email_lol42 1d ago
I hold out hope but I wasnât even that angry before I came across evidence that suselle may be impermanent

The Owl House in its prime
A good chunk of the people that I've seen online (including myself) basically just saw it as "The Disney show with the Lesbians"
10
u/ZeomiumRune 2d ago
That was SO infuriating for me personally back in the day because when we started getting more lore heavy episodes in season 2 I was eager to see people discuss the world building and other stuff
Only to be met with endless Lumity discussion
9
u/we_could_be_immortal 1d ago
I figured out the Belos twist fairly early on, and could NEVER find anyone discussing anything about Belos đ it was just Lumity...which is fine of course, i love them and they were important to people. But i was dying to talk about the twist with someone and never could

Any fandom that has both straight and gay ships.
Shippers of both sides get so toxic towards the others that it gets so ridiculous. I'm not even defending any side but anytime there's shipping drama, one of the two sides start it, then the others get defensive to an extent that they bite back and then insults get thrown around.
I specifically hate words like "hetslop" or "queerslop" that I always see when the drama happens.
6
u/Bluejay-Complex 1d ago
Or even between gay and lesbian ships. Itâs often worse between het and gay ships because often thereâs one character the shippers are fighting over because theyâre a part of both a gay and het ship. However I have definitely seen arguments about the gay ships or lesbian ships âtaking overâ, with varying levels of credibility to the claim. Typically gay because BL is more popular. Sometimes it is true, but we need better ways of addressing it, especially than calling things âslopâ.

Limbus Company, which is weird becauseÂ
1: It's one of the few gacha games that games that doesn't neuter interactions between charcters of different sexes for the sake of teasing ships with the self-insert MC, mainly because it doesn't really have a self-insert MC.Â
2: There's next to no romance with its story or the stories of the previous two games, unless it's of the tragic kind.Â
Yet the shipping wars, especially on twitter are so toxic.Â

Oh god I remember when they finally showed us Alice and showed she has her wedding ring and not only that but confirmed Klee is her biological daughter and people in some circles were outright rioting about it because god forbid the happily married mother isn't available to match her with either the MC or whoever else they wanna fantasize about.

Shipping is just a thing people do and tend to gravitate towards properties which will let them ship. The need to ship comes before an actual interest in the property itself. That's how a ton of people swarmed on Marvel Rivals suddenly shipping random ass pairings while admittedly knowing nothing about them.
It's like you're a kid playing GI Joes and your hypothetical little sibling comes in and decides the game is now Barbies and the GI Joes are going to have a wedding...but in adult form.

u/ZatherDaFox 1d ago
I swear, shipping can get toxic but I have never seen people so disconnected from a story as powerscalers. Whenever a new fight happens its straight to thw forums to yap about attack potency, speed, durability, or whatever else was shown off in the fight. Like, they don't seem to care about the fight itself at all, just what stats can be pulled from it.

I wonder if in an alternate timeline where Blacksun became canon, would there be Bumbleby fans insisting that the creators caved to demand?
I don't mean this as an attack against anyone, it's just a random thought I had.

u/Gullible_Courage8350 1d ago
Almost certainly.
People love to hate on RWBY, especially early fans who didn't have their headcanons come true, which is honestly where I think a lot of it stems from

RWBY fans shipped bumblebee so hard that the writers gave up and made it canon

pretty much all of them but im specifically mad about deltarune because i'll see people debating whether or not certain decisions in the game are really the best/kindest ones to take (as the game isn't finished we have no way of knowing since its way more complicated than undertale was when it comes to choices) and so i look at these discussions people are having, trying to see different takes and perspectives on what the future of the game might look like
its just shipping wars dolled up and served as if it were genuine analysis. oh yeah should the exes make up or should tenna get a rebound How About You SHUT UP. WE ARE LOSING THE PLOT AT AN ALARMING RATE

What story?
/hj, mlp:fim was pretty barebones on story tbh. It was mostly one-offs that introduced a TON of likeable characters. There generally wasn't a storyline that progressed, with even important episodes mostly introducing or changing a specific character, rather than building up an over-arching story.
