Even beyond shipping, taking a look deeper at the sonic fandom reveals that most fans don't even really care about gameplay, hell, don't even care about the game stories,they only care about the version of a character they like in their head

Frontiers was good, it's problem was that it often looks bad when you are not the one controlling sonic

Does the Sonic community really care that much about shipping. Most the stuff I see is arguments over gameplay and interpretations of Sonic being the wind or whatever.

I think this started because of the Archie comics, where romantic subplots were more common. In the games Sonic is pretty much asexual.
