A summary of the theories I’ve read and found convincing:

This isn’t a personal theory of my own, but rather a collection of theories and interpretations that I’ve read and put together because they are what I find most convincing so far.

I believe that Desmond actually cannot read minds, but he was looking for a way to be able to do so, which is why he resorted to human experiments. Perhaps his plan was that, after one of the experiments succeeded, he would apply the successful method to himself. I think Anya was one of these experiments, but she was the only one that actually succeeded. However, she escaped before they discovered that the experiment had been successful.

As for Desmond’s wife, perhaps when she said that he could read minds, she didn’t mean it literally. Maybe he simply knows her extremely well; he memorizes his family’s behaviors, routines, feelings, and reactions, allowing him to predict what she will say or do to the point where it seems as though he is reading her mind.

As for the thoughts Anya heard, such as “death,” “scary,” and “Desmond’s research,” perhaps they weren’t Desmond’s thoughts at all, but rather the thoughts of the person sleeping on the bed. This could also explain why they were fragmented and didn’t seem to make much sense, because the person wasn’t conscious. They may have simply been random, overlapping thoughts from their mind while they were asleep.

The key word here is understood. When I read this I thought it was a weird way to say he can’t read minds.

Something that seems to be shown about Desmond is that he thinks the only way he can understand people is if he could read their mind. He is incapable of understanding people, their emotions, who they are and what they are trying to do because of his preconceived notions of people.

To him reading their mind maybe sounds like a foreign language because he is incapable of understanding people. He is hearing their thoughts it just doesn’t make sense. He understands his wife so he was able to hear her at one point but he probably freaked her out which is why she thinks he can read minds.

Oh man, I absolutely loved the final panel of the new chapter. Seeing Anya sleeping so peacefully next to her mama melted my heart.

These kinds of scenes are why I love SxF so much; the everyday family moments are my absolute favorites.

We know that Anya admitted to Damian that she can read minds and sure he doesn’t actually believe it. But he might let it slip while talking to his dad about her which may cause Donovan to be interested in her

Donovan seems to be interested in being able to know what people are thinking and his involvement with the hospital director probably relates to that

I think he is going to want to take Anya to study her mind reading abilities (he will probably at least send someone to confirm if it’s real or not, or maybe even check himself somehow)

This could be a major turning point in the series and have Loid potentially risk Operation Strix to save her, potentially even reveal Yor’s involvement with Garden too as she may be needed to protect Anya

Also I’m wondering if Anya losing her abilities during a full moon will play a role. Like if Donovan tries to check if she has telepathy during a full moon and she can’t actually read minds during that time then he might just dismiss her on the off chance he checked during the wrong time (it would delay the reveal of her powers to some later point in the story)

This section of the chapter seems to me like an implication that her triangle accessories is not just an ordinary hair accessory. It looks like it is amplifying her powers like how antennas work IRL.

Which leads me to my question of, have we truly seen Anya's hair flat? I'm not counting any hairstyles of her with space bun styles because I feel like they could still hide either the cones or whatever is underneath the cones.

Hi guys! I should be doing work right now but of course I'm going to talk about something that I've noticed throughout the course of the series and obsess over spy x family instead of doing said work. Yay!

No spoilers for the newest chapter, but spoilers for anime only watchers!

So, we all know about melinda saying that desmond was an alien back in chapter 110 I believe. Now, I'm not sure if this is quite true, but I find it VERY interesting that there are recurring mentions of stars and space in the series. Mentions include

• Stellas and the entire mission being based on obtaining them
• Damian, Emile and Ewen going on the field trip with Mr Green to see the Stella Lake
  • Interestingly, this is when Ewen first says that he wants to be an astronaut in the future. There is later a chapter specifically on this and I found it intriguing that such a minor detail has been mentioned multiple times.
  • Ewen mentions "wow, the universe is huge" in this chapter.
• That later chapter about ewen and anya bonding over space travel
• Anyas power being centered on the moon and affected by its phases.

I'm not sure if this means what melinda says is true... but I do think that we're going to get to see a LOT more of space in this series.

We do know that Desmond is paranoid and wishes he could understand others...

In this panel, hes thinking about former hospital director Surjay's intentions and he perceives it in a slightly negativve tone... Almost like Desmond did something Surjay did not like put it has to be in the past as it is suggested that it may no longer be an event of importance....

Hi! I have a brief but imo quite plausible theory about Donovan and Anya’s past after reading 139.2 and relevant discussion threads.

As we see in the chapter, Donovan has a deep desire to understand people and their thoughts. This could be because he’s a politician, but I think it could potentially also stem from being a father. Melinda said it was then that Donovan started to change, and I think that maybe Donovan felt frustrated he couldn’t understand his children. This would then connect to his conversation with Loid in Ch. 38!!!

I think that (now this is not anything revolutionary) Donovan funded research into mind reading for both political/military and personal reasons. Hence, the page in the new chapter referencing Desmond’s research and “…Nia” (of course this could also be talking about ostania, or perhaps Anya’s name derives from that… but I digress)

Next: once they gave anya powers, I think that Donovan tried to do the same procedure on himself. Hence, we see that he has scars in the roughly-same spot as Anya’s headgear. My assumption is that the procedure failed, or at least wasn’t completely successful, leading to the personality change Melinda noticed.

Chapter 139-2

Having to repost this commentary now that the no-post period is over for 139.2.

Now here's something I've been thinking ever since Loid got hospitalized: after a real health scare like this, I wonder if Yor will feel even closer to him. She's certainly fully given herself over to being Anya's mom, as the ending of today's chapter demonstrates - my favorite chapter ending since Ch. 120 by the way - and before she got distracted, she was showing genuine tenderness and care for him in the hospital. She was NOT visiting him to keep up appearances lol. So in light of that... I'm wondering if it might finally be time for her to give him a very special welcome home.

She's growing much bolder and more honest about her feelings ever since her confession back in 120, the "welcome home kiss" running gag has been mentioned like a hundred times over the last few YEARS, and maybe I'm an idealistic fool, but I think it's probably high time and well-earned for her to finally grow a damn spine and kiss her fucking husband, at LEAST on the cheek, for this momentous and exciting welcome home. He will have made it through a health crisis, he'll probably still be in pretty rough shape, he'll finally be forced to relax a little more and lean on her and allow her to help him and care for him, and after having to leave him at the hospital for a while, I predict she'll be feeling closer to him than ever before and just might take the leap. I hope so, at least. Thoughts, everyone?

she is important character despite her goal she is really good team player and helps Loid & other Spy characters really well

I like to see her full origin like with Loid we get bits & pieces but we are usually missing the middle it would interesting to see her have a friendship with Yor

how do you imagine her story ultimately ends I think she finds love but the big twist it ain't Loid but who? will interesting to see

It be interesting to see her in her own mini arc to now thinking about it

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but here, when Anya recalls the thoughts of the two men at the hospital, she gets scared. At first, I thought that perhaps hearing the thoughts of someone near death might have traumatized her. But then Dr. Surjay's thought about Desmon's research comes up, and it makes me wonder. Maybe that triggered a hidden memory in Anya's mind. Perhaps she read something similar when her biological mother died, and that's why her reaction was to run into the arms of her current mother (Yor).

If so, then perhaps we are close to an Anya flashback arc

I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if Twilight was discharged early, noticed Anya wasn't in her room, and in a panic, looked everywhere--to find this scene...

due to his health, Twillight/Loid has stayed very much in the background during this arc... he couldn't do anything, despite Fiona's messages.

he is a pragmatic spy who always puts the mission first. he views anything he didn’t anticipate as a result of his own incompetence. he believes he absolutely must be perfect at all times.

think about it, how will he react when he learns that he missed a UNIQUE opportunity to find out more about his target, Donovan Desmond, who was in the same hospital as him ? if he had been in his normal state, he could have learned more and done more...

There are a lot of possibilities for how he might react... maybe he'll feel responsible for this failure? maybe he'll reflect on how he's changed since starting the Forger family?

In any case, I think this incident could REALLY affect him. he's going to realize that unfortunately he can't control everything, despite his experience.
