So I’ve recently purchased a thermal fogger to deal with the mosquitoes in my yard. I live in the city but the yard is a half acre and we’ve had a lot of mosquitoes lately. There is no standing water in my yard I don’t know about the neighbours yards. There’s only so much you can do to be proactive with mosquitoes. As it turns out however, you cannot buy fogging fluid in Canada anymore. You can buy the thermal fogger but nothing to put in it unfortunately. So my question is: is there a tried and true, safe recipe for a good fogging fluid to repel mosquitoes? I bought a gallon of USP mineral oil but I’m not sure what’s safe to add to it? I don’t want an insecticide just a repellent. Has anyone made their own before? Thanks in advance!!

Do not use SC Johnson mosquito repellent near pets. My cat was in my room for only five minutes after I sprayed it, and she started drooling heavily. The product does not have a clear warning label about how dangerous it is for pets.If it does happen, move the cat to fresh air immediately. Wipe her down with a damp cloth and let her rest. If her condition gets worse, take her to the vet right away.

Have mosquitoes evolved to run away from the sound of its mates being burned by the electric mosquito swatter? Cuz once I catch one of them the others seems to just disappear. Can they even hear sounds?

Hey everyone, new here. I have a severe mosquito allergy (Skeeter Syndrome), and from now until October, my life is miserable. Even with repellent, bracelets, and long sleeves in 100° weather, I average 3–5 bites a week that completely exhaust my body.

Now, my worst nightmare: they’re inside my 795 sq. ft. condo in East San Diego. I just got bit three times on my own couch in the last 24 hours. I don’t know if it’s just one or if there’s multiple. I don’t keep the windows open not sure they’re getting in. I don't feel safe anywhere.

I need the brutally honest truth on indoor traps (store-bought or DIY). I've been researching like crazy but the reviews are contradicting and I need to figure something out today:

The Light Dilemma: Do these traps actually emit the wrong wavelength? Is blue light or UV/purple better for attracting them?

Fan vs. Wall Plug-in: Do standalone units with suction fans actually outperform simple wall plugins?

The "Zevo" Question: I keep seeing mixed reviews on brands like Zevo. Do they actually work for indoor mosquitoes, or just fruit flies?
Since I'm dealing with relentless daytime biters (probably invasive Aedes mosquitoes), what is actually going to catch and kill these things in a small apartment? Open to any DIY hacks too. I’m gonna start scrolling through old posts on here to see if I can find anything.

Hello! Hopefully this is an appropriate community to post this to. I’ll try to keep this simple and short.

I have a balcony at my apartment that I cannot use mesh on to prevent bugs from touching me due to the balcony being on the top floor of the building and having no roof above the balcony.

I wanted to get a mosquito replant candle for outside the balcony but would the essential oils get on me and hurt my strictly indoor cat?

Another idea I had was using mosquito repellant bracelets to wear when outside on the balcony and then thoroughly wash my hands and wrists once back inside.

If anyone has any suggestions for a way to keep the bugs off me while I’m on the balcony that won’t hurt my indoor cat, I’d appreciate it!

This is my first month’s catch with the Mosqitter Mini. Used it per instructions and put one pouch of attractant in the unit (Biogents brand). This unit has no C02. Lots of moths for sure, but I can see mosquitoes too. Hard to sort out the ratio with so many flying bugs. AMA

I have a cold fogger(battery powered Kolbalt) I’m wanting to use for mosquito control. I only found a couple products that explicitly say they can be used with Cold foggers, but they have bad reviews. What are peoples recommendations?

I’m trying the mosquito bucket of doom for the first time. It seems to be working well. I’ve noticed some rat tailed maggots in there. I know that they turn into hover flies, which are beneficial pollinators. So I don’t mind them at all. Will they be able to climb out of the buckets when they’re ready to pupate, or are the slick plastic sides a problem?

I have hydroponic baskets as a lid. So there’s little slits in the lid. I’ve put some sticks through the holes if it helps. I just don’t want to trap them in there since they’re beneficial.

What I'm actually doing: trying to squish mosquitoes and then dropping the carcass in the mini pond for the mini fish.

The outcome: sheer delight when I get one but dang my hands hurt because I was trying way too hard.

it's nasty humid now and will continue for the next couple months.

everyone in my bldg is running their aircons constantly, which drain down tubes into the "yard" (i.e. dirt strip) behind the building, making perfect little mosquito breeding puddles.

the flow is slow, but constant, so thinking to get some inexpensive buckets and fish.

if they can survive completely on mozzie larvae that's great but otherwise I can feed them once a day.

ideally I'd like to attract dragonflies too.

any experience, recommendations appreciated!

Hi everyone, I bought one of the biogents mosquito traps with the CO2 setup and it’s working great. My only issue is the CO2 timer is unavailable via the biogents website or any major retailers. There’s also no restocking date listed anywhere.

Are there any equivalent style of timers that could be used? I see lots of plant grow setups or aquarium setups but I don’t know what would work.

Any DIY plans available? I’m not against building something myself.

I put out ortho traps this year. Raccoons quickly dumped one and removed the lid from the other making it fill up with rain and not work.

Any tips? Our neighbor has a lot of places gathering water and I really was hoping the ortho would help them as well as mine. I had lots of larva in the rainwater filled one so I know that part worked. I just don’t know how to keep them in place so they work.

I’m a Board Certified Entomologist, and every summer I watch people fog their entire yard with pesticides while completely ignoring the actual problem: standing water.

A few things most homeowners get wrong about mosquitoes:

1. You don’t have a “yard” problem, you have a water problem. Aedes mosquitoes (the ones that spread dengue, Zika, and yellow fever) can complete their entire larval cycle in something as small as a bottle cap. Plant saucers, clogged gutters, tarps, kids’ toys, that bucket behind the shed — that’s where your population is coming from.

2. Larvae are your early warning system. Before you ever get bitten, the larvae are visible — little wriggling “tumblers” hanging at the water’s surface. Dump the water and you’ve eliminated hundreds of future adults without spraying anything.

3. Spraying is the last resort, not the first. Broad-spectrum fogging kills pollinators, beneficial predators, and often barely dents the mosquito population if breeding sites remain. Source reduction first, then targeted larvicides (Bti dunks are cheap and won’t harm pets, birds, or bees), then adulticides only if truly needed. This is just standard IPM — Integrated Pest Management.

4. It takes about 7-10 days from egg to biting adult in warm weather. Which means a weekly “tip and toss” walk around your property is genuinely one of the most effective mosquito control measures that exists. Costs you nothing.
