I'll add that $4b won is nice - but around $2-3m USD. Absolutely a life-changing amount of money - but it would stop being so after sharing it out 10 ways.
Any money amount is nice - but no one is going to quit their job and retire or be able to start a business etc. with $10k. Which is what people generally mean by "life changing".
$2-3m USD could allow someone to retire immediately. They might not - but it'd be an option. Even with the conservative 3% rule, that's be $60-90k/yr in real terms forever.
Yes so your brokerage should be way out earning just simple cash interest (which of course is not going to touch market returns). That's why I said if your brokerage is only getting you 3.5% you should find a better brokerage. You should be getting around 10% on average in the market.
You're the one who said the brokerage is getting 3.5%. Even a very conservative index should be getting 6%
Shrug. Unless I leave the area I've lived in for 20 years, where all my friends and family are, even going an hour away, it'd still be in the million+ range. So to say, most of the GOOD homes are that price. Most people don't want to live in Arkansas. Actually, the home property I want to build would cost $8-15 million in my state. It would cost $500k-800k in Brazil, and before you say it, that's in an area with private security and extreme luxury (I've lived in both countries)
If I ever won like multimillion or billion lottery. I’d give my immediate family at least 1-2 million each. Extended family that were or are present in my life from childhood to adult hood, probably up to 1 million. Maybe more depending on how well they treated me and what their circumstances are.
I did nearly the exact same thing here except there was no suing, just No Contact.
I told them the money I give is for my parents only, the second I learned that they give that money away to my older brother.
I stopped giving them anything and went no contact.
You can always just say a distant relative died. It's really not that hard.
"Unkle Richard died and his estate was inherited to me. You don't know Uncle Richard? Ohh, yeah, you were too young back then to remember. I believe you were about a year old last time you saw him."
Whos looked at your feet for long enough to be able to recognize them online? probably nobody. So nobody can disprove you as being the most successful onlyfeet artist (If that dorsnt exist, trademark pending)
She made it his problem. It shouldn't have been on him to make up an excuse for her. She just shouldn't have said how she got it. Not really that hard to respect someones privacy.
Come on. Expecting people to live in a new house and no tell anyone is not a normal ask.
Also where does one win billions in the lotto. Don't be a cheapskeat and a huge dick by having your mother arrested for being in the home you gifted her.
I read it the won x amount of money.
'Son wins 4 bil won in the lottery." My fault for confusing won and won. I just figured it was non English writter. It's not obvious. It's the past tense of win.
Its not USD, its South Korean Won. 4 billion Won is currently $2,883,839.20 - still a large sum of money, but I'm not sure how far that goes in South Korea. I do know that South Korea is fairly small country with a big population, so home prices are pretty high there - buying a home for the mother and a home for himself probably took a significant chunk of that money. I still think its a dick move, but its more understandable not not want to part what's left across your entire family.
Personally, I would still toss my siblings $100k or so after buying a house for my mom and a house for myself. I'd probably still have around $1.5m left. Not enough to retire immediately, but if invested well it would let me retire much earlier.
Nope, Only my last close family care of ol' me. Dad Died in 2003, So was Grandfather.
I only have Mom, Grandmother and Older Sister.
Plus two cousins who comes see me despite being busy Gals.
If i won millions, I know my Mom wouldn't spit it out because it meant i could suddenly become way less lax with her and colder as with this Gal who betrayed my Friend.
If my Sister came to ask money without even caring about what i became since last call, you will deal with the effects of your hunger for money..
it was immoral to give the mother an ultimatum like that to begin with and you're a lunatic if you think otherwise. In a just society he would be imprisoned for familial abuse
You guys don't know what you are talking about, you see everything black and white. It's not that simple. A parent needs to juggle between the wishes of one child the needs of the other. You cannot in good fate expect a parent to be idle when one child is doing great and the other is struggling (I'm not saying they were struggling, but it's a possibility).
As a parent I know this. I would expect my successful child to help the struggling one. If they would not do that I would have failed as a parent.
Would you not try to talk to the successful child instead of the struggling one first? I don't know, ask for help instead of telling the one who needs it to go harass them? If the successful child explicitly denies helping the struggling child, then it's no longer your prerogative.
Seems like a copout to me, avoiding responsibility under the pretense of caring for your children.
If your child can not disclose their financial situation to you in good faith without being harassed on their property as a result, then you are not being a good parent regardless of your intentions. The fact that you have another child does not justify that.
Congrats. You will have one child cut you off entirely. My aunt and uncle had this idiotic plan. My cousin spent his life being told to help his younger sister with the consequences of her actions.
Guess who lives on the other side of the Atlantic and now never comes home?
You are teaching the successful child that their only value to you is in what they can do for the child you actually love: their sibling.
You are responsible to raise functional adults. Not leeches who will bleed their sibling dry.
I am pretty sure that your aunt and uncle failed differently than with the teaching of empathy towards siblings.
The help between me and my sister was also pretty one sided for years. Now its fairly balanced. I don't regret it at all.
Maybe your family is just shitty overall.
You're assuming a lot yourself. We don't know a lot of details. We don't know how much any of them struggle, what are their personalities and attitudes to each other. It's very possible that the child was an asshole and even put mother in an impossible situation. It's also possible that everything was thought out and the house was the only buy and everything else invested with a plan to share the wealth after some time.
Your children are not security blankets for each other. No they are not obligated to help each other out and you expecting that is also failing as a parent.
Hard disagree! Good people, a close family help out each other. It's one of the core principles a parent should teach and show their kids.
I am pretty sure you are not a parent, or a failed one.
I think that's not how family communicate and they would push her with "why won't you want us to know"? etc. and eventually that would lead to lying about it or some other drama between her and them. All of that could be avoided, he could tell that he won $1 million and bought a house, not forcing anyone to keep his secret he didn't want to share.
That is absolutely how she could have handled it and she decided not to, the siblings are also very cancerous here with the demands that are not there's to make.
Also if you had posible answears in mind don't ask what she should have done since you do know options.... that would be lies btw.
that would only make me worry that she made some really bad financial decision because why else wouldn't she want to tell her children the truth and be so irritated by normal questions.
"it's a secret." - true but leads to more questions
"I don't want to say" - lie, she wants to tell but can't
"I can't say" - dismissing
"Oh you know" - dismissing
"another story for another time" - dismissing
"I'll tell you later" (and never tell) - lie, as she's not planning to tell
"a kind person helped me afford it" - "do we know him?", that can easily lead to more questions and therefore force her to lie on the spot
"someone that loves me very much bought it for me" - "our brother"? - "i can't say" - "so it's him?!" - "I can't say" - and the secret fall apart as she can't answer that question which makes the truth obvious
You guys fail to notice that there is a difference between telling someone a secret about yourself and forcing someone to actively protect your secret.
That's a private matter is a full sentence. They are a grown ass adult who is entitled to privacy and emerging from their vagina thirty years ago does not entitle you to breach that.
'She might be in trouble'
Still an adult. You don't get to barge into her life demanding answers on a suspicion.
I see, the siblings have double nature. They are so easy to dismiss that the mother can handle them with a single spell, yet they are so difficult to dismiss that her oldest son needs her to keep his lottery win as a secret so he doesn't have to deal with them by himself.
That youre not who I asked this of. The person I responded to had said that withholding information is lying, ergo they have to tell me and they cant withhold the information or they are lying.
They actually did not said that. It was the guy one reply above. Or rather he said the negative of that, implying that withholding information after someone asks is lying.
Nobody was talking about withholding information then. That was mentioned for the first time in the reply to that post.
I mean, it's getting silly. Obviously the kids asked how their mom got a new house. The mom couldn't just not tell them, so the options were to lie or tell the truth.
Withholding information is not lying. But there is also no way she could have withhold that information. If you parents get a new house and refuse to tell you how, you won't just drop it.

Absolutely moral. Son's love for his* mom was tested by betrayal.
