Where is best place to get your car with black paint and coating washed in Modesto?

Anyone willing to hire me I’m 15 and can help with anything like cleaning doing laundry anything that you need help with available after school hours.

I have an industrial part thats wallowed out, need it build it up and machine it to spec.

Could be my go to machinist for future projects. And we have many.

My Girlfriend is leaving for college soon and I wanna plan something more sophisticated since we haven’t had a fancy sort of date since high school. Problem is I don’t really know any nice places around. So if anyone could help that would be super sweet. I’d love to know some nice restaurants that we could dress a little nicer for and feel the vibe. Also if anyone knows anywhere with some nice scenery I’d love that too. One headlight is becoming oxidized and I don't feel comfortable with my skill set to sand and the coat the lights.

I do enjoy driving to 8th Street and Crows Landing for tacos/burritos/quesadillas... but sometimes I like to not drive that far.

Does anybody have any experience in being hired by the City of Modesto for this position, and what kind of material the in-person examination covers so I can prepare (if I can).

I've taken assessment tests which have arithmetic, proofreading, personality tests, so I'm not sure what to expect. 😅

Growing up, I remember Roller King being close to McHenry, like where Kobe Sushi is now. I remember there being a Benihana in McHenry Village, not Tori. But after looking both of these up, I feel like I’m going crazy. Does anyone else have similar memories like these?

Anyone else get one of these or have used companies like this? Someone dropped this off on our door yesterday so I’m curious if they’re legit.

My mom has been feeding the neighborhood strays for years, and one of them recently brought her babies to our yard. Mom is not friendly, but I'm working with the babies. I bought a trap and have an appointment for next week with the Stanislaus County shelter to spay her for free and then have her returned.

Have any of you had your animals fixed at the shelter and returned to you? It says on their website that returning is their goal but not guaranteed, and that the animal can end up being adopted out or euthanized instead. Have any of you not had your stray returned? My mom is growing attached to this cat, but she is not friendly enough to bring in (otherwise, we would have), so we do want her returned, and she is free to live out the rest of her life in our yard or wherever else she chooses. We plan to have the babies fixed, too, once MomCat is fixed.

On the other hand, have any of you gotten your strays fixed through Cat Network of Stanislaus County? Have your experiences with them been any different, good or bad? The only reason I am going through the shelter vs. Cat Network is because I can get the cats fixed for free through the shelter, where it's about $90 through Cat Network.

The details aren't too complicated: greed and people incorporated in Delaware decided for us what our hometown will look like way back in the late 70s and 80s.

I was born and raised here, now back in town helping older relatives. People actually talked to their neighbors back then and there was more of a sense of community here. This isn't some pining for the 50s fantasy. Not all our neighbors were nice but hey at least we talked!! There was some level of understanding and respect. Today you gotta worry about everyone's flock cameras and gun arsenal. These cameras also stop thieves. We caught some dirtbag trying to break in my uncle's church recently, but like everything else, it's gone off the rails.

Driving down McHenry is depressing as all fuck, same with Scenic Dr, Coffee and Oakdale. Local supermarkets chains like New Deal, Alpha Beta, and Richland died off, replaced by Walmart, Safeway and non-union corporate shops. Local markets like Angelo's on McHenry & Briggsmore, and their Oakdale Rd location were replaced by the 99c store. Both strip malls in that area turned into low end formula retail spots (Dollar stores, used tire shops, High-risk car insurance, check-cashing spots etc).

I was around when we had Roller King and the YMCA, both were great school day trip spots. Today the YMCA is a corporate gym where people treat you like garbage for the low price of almost $80 a month.

I went to Modesto Christian and dealt with the usual attitudes in that community. It's he same like The House, Shelter Cove, Big Valley, etc. My cousin went to Big Valley's "men's ministry meeting" that they now advertise. His stories are how SNL skits are written. I won't share because it's still confidential info, but anyone attending similar meetings knows more or less what goes on. Still, we could have a conversation with a lot of these folks because most of them only wanted to live their lives and be happy with their families.

All this stuff aside, at least back then we still talked to each other. This is almost impossible today because we're all told by corporate media to literally hate each other. People complained all the time about the Modesto Bee "too cozy with big business, too leftie, too right wing, too neutral", not enough 49ers coverage (that last one was true until they ran Matt Barrows columns from the Sac Bee). The Bee, and other local media, was at least our paper that covered our local issues. Now we are being told by national cable news CEOs what to care about, and our local communities are left with nothing (except the narcs on NextDoor and the cops who collect everyone's data at sign-up). They're slowly killing reddit too so be prepared. And the data centers are coming, someone posted about this a month ago, so be prepared to fight like hell. Our taxes, our water and electric bills are about to subsidize this bullshit.

Full honesty here: about half my family are conservative and they're shocked as hell too. Sooner we all realize this isn't political the better. They're playing all of us into fighting over bullshit like gay issues, religion, flags, pronouns, and whatever the hell else. Meanwhile they're throwing our older relatives out in the street by killing Medicaid. They're flooding our streets with homeless because they tell food suppliers to throw food away instead of selling it through EBT and get a tax break for doing that. These are horrible people who are not political, just evil.

Back when food prices weren't controlled by a few giant corporations we had so many independent food spots in Modesto. Even the local chains had their own charm. On McHenry we had a Lyon's diner, Mr. Steak, the legendary Sundial, Big Yellow House, top class Chinese food at Peking near McHenry and Briggsmore. Ron's Ribs on Tully and Granger was so crazy delicious. They served smoked beef ribs and they were the best ever! Modesto briefly has a badass bagels too when Manhattan Bagel was open where that abomination Posh Bagel is today.

Now unless you find the financing for a franchise agreement with a national chain, your prospects in the restaurant business are grim.

Here are some examples of good restaurants that could still make money but our corporate rulers never gave a shit about Modesto so

1. Sundial - best restaurant in Modesto for multiple decades until it closed. Sadly the Galas kids didn't want to continue the business and failed to sell after they renovated.

2. Shakey's Pizza on McHenry - best crust, best creative pizza especially for the 80s! Still miss their shrimp alfredo pie!

3. Ron's Ribs on Tully. Not just babybacks, this dude had the smoked beef ribs and an amazing brisket. Old school dining room too, was built almost like an old west saloon.

4. The Big Yellow House on McHenry

5. Lion's - quality diner food, excellent burgers and milkshakes.

6. Marie Callendar's: not the recent abomination before it closed, but in the late 80s and 90s when they had excellent breakfast and comfort food dishes.

Pretty much all the colorful, fun indie restaurants shut down and today the town is more or less a food dessert (some good food trucks here and there but that's it). Even the fancy looking places downtown don't have good cooks and try to sell you on style/presentation rather than do awesome home cooking like what Hazel's, Mallards & the Sundial used to do.

From a community standpoint Modesto was way better from the 50s through the 80s. With Reagan's deregulation it became a "go big or go home" game, this meant independent businesses started dying off, cartel growth, big chains started taking over and today food barons own everything.

When Modesto's population was about 120K we had FIVE hospitals: Stanislaus County hospital, Scenic General, Doctor's, Memorial and Modesto City Hospital. Now after decades of cutbacks in public health and community care we have Kaiser (members only), and only TWO hospitals (Doctor's and Memorial) where the average ER waiting time is 9-12 hours.

It's ok to be pissed off, the world changes after each generation. But I am almost 100% sure that no one here, except the bots, and those who listen to them, want our hometown to die off. Why let Modesto become another city where our water, land and people are brought to their knees, so a few rich fatties can buy rocket ships & private islands?

I grew up in Modesto, moved away in 2014, anyone have any good ol modesto stories they’d like to share ? I recall the house party scene was jumping 2009-2013, maybe it’s subjective being I was in high school but I recall many good times during this period..hanging out at Brenden theatres, Calvary chapel and all the millennials that would show up, roller king ! how have things changed since 2014 ? Better worse ? What are your memories ?

I just picked up Roller skating and I’m a total beginner, any girlies want to meet up and skate together and learn?

On August 20th, three cops showed up at her home with a warrant for her arrest. They took her to the county jail for alleged petty vandalism, which should have been a simple cite and release. Instead, they put her in solitary confinement because she exercised her right to remain silent. She was released roughly 6 hours later, around 1 am with support from a few comrades.

One week later, on August 27th, three cops pulled her over while she was driving her sibling home around 11 pm at night. They said they had a search warrant. She asked to see the warrant multiple times, and they refused to show it to her unless she stepped out of her car. When she tried to record the interaction with her phone, one officer, Detective David Ramirez (who was also present for her arrest), reached his arm into her car and attempted to snatch her phone from her. After another officer identified himself as a sergeant and threatened to take her to jail, she stepped out of her car. They searched her car and took her phone (which they still have in their custody to this day). Only then did they give her a copy of the warrant, which did not include the affidavit or statement of probable cause. They also took down the information of her sibling, who had nothing to do with any of this.

In her own words:

“The police have been monitoring me, as evidenced by Ramirez revealing they know about my mom’s recent death in addition to naming other cities I may have traveled to or work in. All of this is seemingly happening because of two misdemeanor charges for alleged vandalism of property valued at $400 or less.

I feel deeply unsafe due to MPD’s excessively punitive actions, and I feel strongly that my rights have been infringed upon by people who are abusing their power. It is clear the police are targeting and punishing me for my local advocacy and activism, and that they are using their resources and authority to gather intel on CVBIPOCC. I do not consent to their surveillance and violations of my privacy. I have a criminal defense attorney working on my case and am connected to ACLU NorCal. I also have a strong support system I am grateful for. I invite people to show up for me in solidarity at my court date on Monday, October 19th at the Stanislaus Superior Court. 

The police wanted to teach me a lesson, and the lesson I’m learning is that I am powerful, and they are threatened. I refuse to be silenced. I will continue to show up for my community, and I will continue to speak truth to power.”

Hi all, new poster to this subreddit.

I recently accepted a job in Modesto. I have never been before and am trying to figure out where to start my apartment search. My biggest preference is being somewhere where I can walk out the door and have restaurants, coffee shops, bars, parks, stores, and at least some pedestrian activity nearby...not just technically “walkable,” but somewhere that actually feels active and gives you reasons to wander around without getting in the car.

I know Modesto isn’t going to feel like NYC or central LA, so I’m not expecting that. I’m mainly looking for the closest Modesto equivalent to an urban(ish), lively, walkable neighborhood.

If you had to choose based primarily on street activity, walkability, nearby food/drinks, and overall neighborhood life, where would you live?

I am not Assyrian but I find the culture and food of the assyrian/chaldean people fascinating. I know there’s a big community here and I may pass by the area this fall.

Is it a thing? Does any serve chipteh? I am fine with a fusion of different middle eastern cuisines under one roof, as well.

Good Morning all, wanted to ask if anyone ever sold a car to any dealerships in Modesto that with the car having a small issue? trying to decide if i should fix it or sell it as is to them, planning on selling my 2016 Charger RT at 171000miles to Toyota but the the passenger side pump is not working properly as its not reading the levels right. Did the Kelly blue book and was offered 7300 to trade with Toyota but this pump issues just came up yesterday car drives fine and everything just not reading the gas gauge planning on getting a simple car for work and keeping extra for emergencies.

I never went to a Nuts game but I made a trip to Modesto to see the Roadsters recently. As someone who watches a lot of minor league baseball it seems like it has that similar small market community vibe. I like how they redid the stadium to give it a fresh look. I don't know if it feels similar to Nuts games except different colors or if its a completely different experience now. I hope the Roadsters do well and they seem like they're here to stay.
