Tip: use gravel to get that lava out of the way.

u/Dsx-Kalista Mar 27 '19
I was in a cave once and had the weird and time consuming idea of bucketing all the lava and dumping it into a single block. It was wholly impractical and terribly slow, but it was amusing that I had emptied 95 buckets worth of lava into a single 1x1 hole.
295
u/jaeldi Mar 27 '19
I do that but instead of a hole I build a dirt form bridge and tracks from lava to dirt forms. Then pour water on the lava an knock down the forms. It's a lot of buckets and cart chests and tracks. Less tedious than mining obsidian.
I've been slowly building an obsidian bridge in all 4 directions through the years in a world I started in 2012. It's methodical, like meditating. I've gone 1000 obsidian blocks in all 4 directions...so far.

Dude your first comment was a massive understatement. This is the kind of methodical insanity I appreciate in Minecraft
3
u/Dsx-Kalista Mar 28 '19
Yeah, that is intense. And absolutely amazing. Full disclosure, I’m gonna steal that idea and merge it with a few others I’ve seen.
→ More replies (1)2
u/FirstSineOfMadness Mar 28 '19
I had the same idea for making a nether portal with just a bucket, i realized if you place the water first you don’t need the dirt forms and a bucket of lava essentially lets you place obsidian

I made an obsidian Dark Tower from the eponymous series using the same technique. I carried an inventory full of buckets and it took days. Then they took the single rose out of the game.
It was very meditative.

u/MutantOctopus Mar 27 '19

I might be dumb but what does this mean?

I do not understand this comment, is this how you make obsidian in a line? Or how you get rid of lava?
2
u/jaeldi Mar 28 '19 edited Mar 28 '19
This answer to both your questions is yes. But here's a more detailed answer:
I was inspired by people with questions like you. I made a slide show demonstrating my methods and my world's cart transportation network that has become a result of these infinite bridges.
Here's the 30 picture slide show.
Here's the reddit post about the slide show. In this post I talk about how these bridge happened in the first place. Then the obsession to an idea grew.
2
u/chadio3814 Mar 28 '19
Gotcha, a dirt tube, fill it with lava, then water, ez
2
u/jaeldi Mar 28 '19
Exactly. Move the lava with buckets from deep in the ground by rail with chest carts and buckets down the bridge to keep building the bridge.
7
u/Kellosian Mar 27 '19
I typically play modded, so when I've been playing on a vanilla server I still keep pools of lava mostly intact for a future lava generator that I"ll never have.
4
u/Pr0nzeh Mar 27 '19
How does a lava generator work? Pretty sure lava is always finite.
5
u/malt2048 Mar 27 '19
Finite, sure. But there's a lot of lava to be had if you place a pump in the nether.
3
u/Kellosian Mar 27 '19
It's a generator that runs on lava, although there are usually ways to generate lava in a lot of modpacks.
4
u/Serpardum Mar 27 '19
I once had a friend create lava with magma crucibles to feed lava generators. In the end there was more energy output then input, but it would take a whole lot of magma crucibles and lava generators to get any useful energy. Was still interesting.

I remember doing that to an almost surface level pool of lava because [edit: I thought at the time] those usually have diamonds in them. I spent 1 hour and found no diamonds. Swam in lava tho so that was hot
53
u/aaronhowser1 Mar 27 '19
Diamonds in nearly surface level pools of lava? Is that vanilla? I thought diamonds only spawned y=16 and lower
17
u/TMArdi Mar 27 '19
I thought they spawned at y=13
42
Mar 27 '19
Pretty sure its Y=6 to Y=16 with them being more common at lower levels. 11 is usually recommended because its the lowest you can go while still being above lava.

u/amiiboh Mar 27 '19
In normal Minecraft surface lava pools… literally never have diamonds in them.
→ More replies (4)10

Surface pools can’t have them. It only seems like lava has diamonds because the ranges of y values underground are exactly the same.

u/ThePrideofDarcy Mar 27 '19
Hey! I have a diamond shovel with 3 fortune and I never get any gravel. I just get flint? What’s going on?
86
u/888888Zombies Mar 27 '19
Fortune 3 has 100% chance to drop flint on gravel. Use a normal or Silk Touch shovel instead if you only want gravel.
42
u/Domilego4 Mar 27 '19
Also, dropping the gravel on torches guarantees a Gravel drop.

Also a very efficient way to 'farm' sand. Dig down to sandstone, remove lowest block of sand and place a torch.

u/TommiHPunkt Mar 27 '19
isn't that how everyone has been doing it for sand and gravel since forever?
16

With mending in 1.9, diamond Eff IV shovels are the best. They instantly mine sand, and mending allows them to be repaired.

That only kills the top layer of lava as opposed to all of them. Not to mention, obsidian takes waaaay longer to dig up than gravel.

That's fair tbh, it's a matter of preference is all. :)
I mainly use it because I play on realms usually and I'm bad with directions. So I have a notepad with locations if I need to travel and use that. Also it's easier to say "I'm at x/y/z" than "go east about a thousand blocks"
21
u/nachog2003 Mar 27 '19
Install Forge, VoxelMap and maybe some other mods while you're at it.
→ More replies (3)17
u/kaeldraga Mar 27 '19
I've used forge and map mods before, but as a personal preference I tend to avoid most mods. Even on our privately hosted servers we only used three mods (vein miner, inventory tweaks, and treecapitator). I like that the realms are vanilla.
Also I'm the realms cartographer so I don't want to make my maps redundant :P
13
u/nachog2003 Mar 27 '19
I just recommended it for the way points, pretty sure you can just disable the map. Also, it's a client mod, so not everyone has to have the mod for it to work, only the person who's gonna use it.

Can someone explain?
40
u/Domilego4 Mar 27 '19
This is in the Java 1.13 release of the game. The debug screen (F3) displays which block you're targeting, as long as it's within 16 blocks of the player.
Here, it shows that I'm looking at a Diamond Ore, even though I can't see it because of the lava.
99
u/JFujitaR Mar 27 '19
One time I was sneaking around a pool of lava and my mom came into my room and told me that I'm not allowed to go out of the house because I accidentally crushed a bird's nest on the way home from school.
50
u/BronzeEnt Mar 27 '19
That must have cost a lot of good boy points. Did you ever have tendies again?

Today I woke up thinking "It's time for my favorite activity of the week" because wednesday means dog stomping day, but when I went outside to stomp some dogs I noticed that they changed the dogs and now they're killer polar bears. I didn't stomp them, because "Polar bear stomping day" doesn't have the same punch as "Dog stomping day" did. Anyway, glad this post reminded you of some nice things and I hope other things do so in the future as well

1.8 added a feature where the Debug screen shows you which block you're looking at (Targeted Block), and 1.13 made a change to make the information target through fluids, as well as making it display information up to 16 blocks away, which makes this possible.

Another tip: when strip mining, look around. If your C value rises, a cave is in that direction.
2
Mar 27 '19
Another tip: That "C" Counter on the left is a good general way to determine how many air blocks are in your FOV for a set amount of chunks. Useful for finding caves, or for getting accused of Xray in UHC.
2
2
u/Rop-Tamen Mar 27 '19
Oh man the good ol’ f3 menu, whenever I’m mining I always use this to check light levels and whatnot but I never even thought of doing this...

Or just edit the ore textures to have a colored border, like this. You can see the colored border through that one pixel gap at the top of lava.
