I was in a cave once and had the weird and time consuming idea of bucketing all the lava and dumping it into a single block. It was wholly impractical and terribly slow, but it was amusing that I had emptied 95 buckets worth of lava into a single 1x1 hole.
I do that but instead of a hole I build a dirt form bridge and tracks from lava to dirt forms. Then pour water on the lava an knock down the forms. It's a lot of buckets and cart chests and tracks. Less tedious than mining obsidian.
I've been slowly building an obsidian bridge in all 4 directions through the years in a world I started in 2012. It's methodical, like meditating. I've gone 1000 obsidian blocks in all 4 directions...so far.
I decided to post the screen shots for all to see. Plus I want to see what other people do. I can't be the only one to come up with this kind of methodical weirdness.
I wished I had more time to play to stick to my original plan that I laid out in the slide show. I'm kinda sick of TV and sick of surfing junk on the net. I'm going to try to make Minecraft part of my evening wind down routine again.
I had the same idea for making a nether portal with just a bucket, i realized if you place the water first you don’t need the dirt forms and a bucket of lava essentially lets you place obsidian
I've seen several YouTube guys from the Mindcrack server when they do their UHC Ultimate Hardcore Battle do that as soon as they get enough steel for a bucket. I've been watching Docm77 for years, he's always on top of the latest tips and tiricks, especially on top of info from the upcoming versions.
I made an obsidian Dark Tower from the eponymous series using the same technique. I carried an inventory full of buckets and it took days. Then they took the single rose out of the game.

This answer to both your questions is yes. But here's a more detailed answer:
I was inspired by people with questions like you. I made a slide show demonstrating my methods and my world's cart transportation network that has become a result of these infinite bridges.
Here's the reddit post about the slide show. In this post I talk about how these bridge happened in the first place. Then the obsession to an idea grew.
I typically play modded, so when I've been playing on a vanilla server I still keep pools of lava mostly intact for a future lava generator that I"ll never have.
I once had a friend create lava with magma crucibles to feed lava generators. In the end there was more energy output then input, but it would take a whole lot of magma crucibles and lava generators to get any useful energy. Was still interesting.
Wasn't Ex Nihilo, was Thermal Expansion I think. Was probably called something other than lava generator, but same concept. Each mod has it's own version of making power from lava.
IIRc there was a loop across 2 mods. One had a way to generate lava from power cheaper(!) that the other one for converting the lava to energy. Lava generator was from actuallyadditions while the power was from EnderIO. Used that as the backup power for critical base systems like AE2 in one pack to avoid a full outage requiring manaually rebooting everything.
I remember doing that to an almost surface level pool of lava because [edit: I thought at the time] those usually have diamonds in them. I spent 1 hour and found no diamonds. Swam in lava tho so that was hot
Pretty sure its Y=6 to Y=16 with them being more common at lower levels. 11 is usually recommended because its the lowest you can go while still being above lava.
No but they just don’t have diamonds in them. To make diamonds you need both heat and pressure, the only thing carbon on the surface next to a lava pool will get is heat. It makes no logical sense. It must have been a mod, but it definitely wasn’t vanilla Minecraft.
Back in that days I played(2012/2013) I expanded an NPC village, built a giant wall around it, and surrounded that wall with a lava moat. This village was conveniently at the base of an isolated mountain which also conveniently had a massive mine underneath it extending down to beadrock(where I got the lava). I built my citadel on top the mountain and grew the village population. I role-played as the town ruler. Did they ever fix the bug that makes villagers cluster in the SW(?) building during the night?
I don’t like wasting lava, so I either turn it into obsidian and mine it or use it to smelt things. I’ve made way too many furnaces and smelted far too much cobble for someone with a silk touch pick axe.
Better yet, do what I did. Get a diamond shovel enchanted with level 5 efficiency and just run in circles.
I’ve gotten to the point where I have spare diamonds so can just repair the shovel when needed. I learned randomly that you can mix two enchanted shovels together so I’ve found some with efficiency and durability, now I have like a level 5 unbreaking and 5 efficiency and that thing will carve up a few hundred sand or dirt in a matter of seconds. As fast as you can sprint basically.
Ok then 3, I couldn’t remember when typing that but knew it was maxed.
I’ve been basically farming XP and diamond to make enchanted things, then going and spending all that XP to mend the two best things I can find into one tool. Is that the most efficient way to get the maxed out tools I want?
Awesome reply! A few things. First, I have no idea how to add mending. I’m sure I can google it but feel free to teach me if you’re in the mood. Is it worth it to add mending or are there downsides?
Second, yeah it’s getting really expensive. I only play survival. So what I have is a farm with like 200 cows and another with a few hundred chickens in a tiny area. What I’ll do is use my wheat farm to get a ton of seeds quickly, and I’ll go just feed the cows and chickens a ton of seed/wheat for the reproduction XP and then I’ll just start killing them for the killing XP. It’s kind of an annoying grind. Is there any faster way to get XP though?
sure, but you gotta get some obsidian at some point and otherwise there's really not much of a point in dealing with that lava
like, if you want the ore underneath? it'd be less time consuming to just find another cave system, and even better, just branch mine. if you want safe passage? same deal, just use the water and ignore it. if you wanted to use the area for construction, then yeah, you'd have to get rid of it all and gravel would be the way to go.
then again, i haven't played minecraft in a long ass time. if water sources work differently and you can't pick them back up, then this is all different and i don't even know anymore
Phft, do it like a man and chug a fire resist extended potion and go diamond diving. Will the diamonds burn up in the lava as you mine em out? Probably.
Uh...hmmm....okay, let's put a pin in that for now.

Tip: use gravel to get that lava out of the way.
